Hwayugi: The Obligatory Kiss Report Card

The Kiss is a distraction.

Without the obligatory scorecard on the kiss, I can’t start critiquing Episode 13.  At first, I was going to grade it – since it’s the Winter Olympics – but everybody’s scores were too high.

Instead, I settled for Lady Gaga’s straight-up, no bullshit, “no” paddle.

And here are my reasons.

1. I HATED the two-fist head grab. I know he was trying to cover her ears so she wouldn’t hear Han-Joo’s words and become upset. But he made her head look like a basketball. I was half-expecting him to dribble her head down the hallway and make a lay-up with it. For the win!

BTW, I really detest Oh Yeon Seo’s wide eyed look. She was fine in “My Sassy Girl” but here she’s. … ugh… Her acting sticks out like a sore thumb. She does NOT and canNOT play an ingenue. She looks fake as a three dollar bill. I’m tolerating her though because she excels in the bitch face and the injured look.

Her scary eyes killed the mood for me.

2. Why are you kissing the top lip? (And why are you wearing eyeliner, LSG? So distracting.)

It’s advisable to aim for the bottom lip so your noses don’t get smooshed like pancakes. Kissing is about lining up your faces correctly so all the nooks and crannies match the lumps and the bumps.  After you’ve safely landed on the bottom lip, THEN you can move up…or nibble your way up to the top lip.

3. You’re a bit too eager, dear.

I know OhGong was “stealing” a kiss because he didn’t want Han-Joo to see them, but really!  A sensual kiss is when the kisser and the kissee are not even glancing down at the lips, but staring into each other’s eyes, and their lips meet halfway in space. It means the kisser has excellent timing and mad GPS skills. But here, we could tell that he was already puckering up for the approach, while she hadn’t even open her lips to catch his.  Just relax….

And he pulled her head again. Grrrr….

4. Are you mauling her??

This had got to be one awkward neck position for Oh Yeon Seo … errrr… SunMi.

Remember Newton’s third law of motion? For every action in nature, there’s an equal and opposite reaction.  One of OhGong’s hand was pushing against her cheek but his other hand was gripping the armrest, remember? There was nothing there to hold SunMi’s head up so her neck muscles would have been straining to stay up.

To me, this would explain why SunMi didn’t seem to be participating in the kiss. It was 98% OhGong doing his own thing while she waited for his next lip action. Hmmm… this was probably why many of the viewers thought LSG was hot. Because he was doing all the work. There’s some dominant/submissive play going on….

Anyway, what the director should have told LSG to do here was to hold OYS’s nape, to cup the back of her neck (NOT the cheek) in order to steady her head so SHE could kiss back.

This position would have been okay if he was kissing her gently. But he just planted her a big one, and he was applying pressure as he kissed her.  Thank goodness, there was no suction involved since this was all just acting.  Pressure + suction would have been the absolute kiss of death.

But there are a couple of good things about the kiss.

1. OhGong didn’t slobber. There’s nothing as revolting as a wet kisser. It would be like kissing a Saint Bernard or a monkey. Ewww.

Awwww… who wouldn’t want to kiss this big oaf? (the dog)

2. OhGong smiled at her after each kiss. I like that best of all.  It’s like taking a bow after a great Olympic performance; it’s the right way to finish. As OhGong peeled off his lips from her, he smiled to show how much he enjoyed the experience with her.

Report card grade: C+

Points deducted for technique. Points added for enthusiasm.

  1. Haha first time reading your analyze on a kiss scene. I don’t know about rest but they don’t have chemistry here it was awkward to watch.

  2. Tbh, I didn’t find the kisses in this episode swoony. While the third one was a little, I much prefer the one after they got rid of the bookseller.

But yah I’m both episodes, my favourite is when oh gong stopped mid kiss and stared lovingly at sun mi.

  3. Onlysb, I agree. At first when I saw the previews of those three kisses separately, I didn’t feel it. I thought maybe they were disjointed and out of context. But after catching that episode, I was still feeling meh about it.

  4. 🐒this is my first kiss report card for Hwayugi. But I’ve done kiss analyses for other kdramas.🤣😂😇😈 I’m like you. I don’t see chemistry between OYS and LSG. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough. Lol. IMO the actress who’s playing Buja/priestess would have made a better SunMi than OYS. Right combination of wide-eyed innocence and inner bitch. My 2 cents.

  5. @Karen,yes, the bookseller kiss was good. The Jonathan-repellent kiss was distasteful. I know the fangirls were swooning over it. But it’s because they do NOT think with their brains but with the feeeellllliiinnnngs.

It was plain as day, when he marched towards SunMi, that he was going to break up that touching reunion between Jonathan and SunMi. But did he really need to grab her wrist to swirl her around and then plant a kisser on her? In real life, if my husband did that to me, I’d give him a baleful glare.

If OhGong wanted a public avowal that they were a “couple” or that she was “his,” the civilized thing to do was stand beside SunMi and introduce himself. “Good evening, I’m Song OhGong. Her Stud Monkey.” (Or Huggy Monkey, Monkey Buns, Cuddle Monkey or Monkey King whatever)

But I get it. This is kdrama and the Hong sisters were writing for the masses who think it’s thrilling to be claimed like an item in Lost-and-Found.hahaha.

  6. Since I am still “trying” to catch up (ep6 done) I decided to read your blog. Lol. It was like reading a proper instruction on how to kiss (tutorial 101)😝

Looking at the screencap it seemed he was forcing his kiss? And she was stiff…like it sh3 had no clue what was coming on her.😂 maybe the reason I waslazyy catching up was that the chemistry is not as sizzling as the TMS couple. Even YYS and KSR developed a good chemistry between them in W&C. (I think she had more chemistry with JH in Shine or Go Crazy)
Grinned at how you describe the moment of kissing like a gsp…😝 knowing the exact place eveb without looking. And yes.. Holding the nape would be sexy.

  7. Right? Right?

But it’s not LSG’s acting here that’s at fault. It’s OYS’s fault…and the director’s too. I understand that LSG is a very physical actor. That’s what I like about him. @onlysb (was it you, dear? Or oppa’ goddess?) was saying that she didn’t find LSG handsome and I get it. He isn’t pretty to look at like Jo In Sung or Park BoGum. But to me, he looks attractive because of his ruggedness. He looks tough and sturdy but funny.

So, in this kissing scene, I expected him to come on strong. To kiss energetically, like he did.

OYS however was jarringly outmatched in acting. Her surprised look made her character looked stupid, instead of flustered.

SunMi liked the guy, yet she didn’t want to kiss him back??! Probably the first kiss, I’d allow the shy girl act. But the second and third time? I expected *breathless* anticipation or irrepressible giddiness. I want sparkles from her. ✨✨

But OYS looked like this was all a day-job to her. There’s no oomph to her acting in this scene. I agree with others who are saying that LSG is doing the hard carry for the team. It’s obvious here. 🐒

  8. @Karen Right, I prefer kiss scenes with proper build up. Judging otp chemistry by surprise kisses can be a lil tricky. Directing choice also important. They tend to make it seem like actors do all the job. All things considered still not impressed by end result. Oh, well…

@Packmule It wasn’t me. I find Lee Seung Gi charming too. In fact I didn’t see Bo Gum’s handsomeness till he smiled genuinely in the last episode of I Remeber You haha

  9. When I first saw Park Bo Gum in Reply 1988, I thought he looked like a ventriloquist’s dummy. 🙀His smile was way too wide and it exposed his small upper jaw. But he’s fine.

Aesthetically, I like full lips 👄 kissing thin lips. Two full lips lip-locking look kinda … dirty 😆and two thin lips kissing each other look restrained. 😞When the actors are about to kiss, I check the plumpness of their lips. OYS has thin lips; LSG has the thick lips so they should have matched. 😂

Here we go again with our silly conversations…. One of my girl friends said that more women prefer guys with thin lips. But more men think girls with thick lips are sexier. I’ve thin lips and when I’m angry, they look like one long underline under my nose. 😐

  10. Ventriloquist? Let me google it LOL I think you warmed up to him because he was underdog then.
I like wide sparkling smiles and I completely agree with your friend. I have similar preference for face type; round face on women, v shape on men looks better.

  11. The ventriloquist’s dummy. It looks kinda like the chuckie doll/demon in Episode 1.

I never thought of V shapes on men. Who are the V-shaped kdrama actors? Jo In Sung? Ah! That actor in “W”?

Hmmm. I think I’m partial to square jaws on guys, just because I’m used to them. Square jaws with stubbles in the morning. Lol. 😍

  12. Oh, I thought most of actors have v face or is it checkbones? Jo In Sung, Hyun Bin, Ji Sung, Joo Won can be it. Some have square jaw too. I think Yoo Ah In, Lee Seung Gi have round face for ex.

  13. I agree with you about these kisses and the smiles. Oh Gong’s smiles were great. But I also loved his hand on the sofa which somehow felt quite hot

  14. It is supposed to be hot! 🔥🔥🔥
It’s subliminal. 😄When he clutched the armrest, the image we were supposed to be getting was that of somebody who was in the “throes of passion” (as romance book writers would call it, lol).

Clenching a fist could be seen as an aggressive body language but in this context, it indicated restrained passion. At any rate, in the actual sexual act itself, there’s a lot of squeezing and clenching of muscles going on…and I’m not talking about hand muscles, okay? 😂

So yes, I totally get why that hand clenching was effective. It was much better than the SOUND of LSG moaning (ewww), that’s for sure. Pwahahaha.

  15. Ji Sung. I only finished one drama of his, “Save the Last Dance for Me” with Eugene. Tried to watch “Protect the Boss” and couldn’t stand the actress/comedian with him. I’ve to watch him in “Kill Me, Heal Me.”
