Poem a Day: Response to Paperclip

The nice thing about NOT gushing over the romance and getting stuck in the moment – like most fangirls do (cough cough)  – is that we can discuss IDEAS rather than how handsome the actor is or swoony his actions are.  I’m glad when I read your comments and I don’t see comments like “I want him for all eternity.” or “I love him!” or “His smiles!! heart. heart. heart. heart.” or “Wae??? Why are you so handsome?!”

I’m warning fangirls now. If I ever read something like those dumb comments here in my blog, I’m going to bitch-mode and delete them as spam. In a heartbeat. Those comments are worse than these @#$@#$ ci.a.l.is and vi..a.gra spams I’m getting. ugh!

So here we have Paperclip’s post. Thanks for bringing this up and I’ll answer you here because I’ve pics.

***********************************

Hey Packmule3 so I wrote this post on my thoughts on ep.8 a couple of days back on dramabeans. Is it ok that I share it here? It is very in line with your girl (in lower case) reason. Here’s how it went-
Although the latest episode was called the point of no return, I saw another encompassing theme, ‘a child’. We saw it when Dr.Kim’s storyline was revealed about how she is unable to have children. Dr. Park too was easily willing to switch loyalties at work because he had kids back home and his mother had come all the way only to look after them. Then, when Chief Yang asks Dr.Ye for a favour that, even if he’s sacked to take care of his staff, he felt responsible for them professionally and personally, almost like his children?
This made me access Boyoung and Dr.Ye’s relationship. Dr.Ye is very protective about Boyoung, he uncharacteristically avenges her. He worries about her. Seeing her feel down he cheers her up with walks in the park, treat meals or kind reassurances.
Back to the theme, at the park Dr.Ye and Boyoung see all the kids flocking to the cotton candy and Dr.Ye buys one for her too. Later in the day, Dr.Ye see a child eating cotton candy, he probably see Boyoung in that child (conversely a child in Boyoung). In other instances we see Boyoung putting or nearly putting gauze or tissue or a dusting brush into her mouth- doesn’t this remind you of how babies put everything in their mouths?!
Now Boyoung is nicknamed Cry “baby” Boyoung, which when Dr.Ye first heard of it he thought it very fitting. Even the usb left behind had a cute little plushie Dr.Ye pointedly looks at. Funnily enough the trash song at the karaoke too begun “You’re a baby, you’re a baby..” 😂
So basically what I am getting at is, Dr.Ye has definitely noted Boyoung’s childlike innocence, how she can cry easily, sees the poetry in life. For this I see Dr.Ye being a professional mentor, a lifecoach and yes A PARENT, to Boyoung. But not a love interest.

**************************

Good points, Paperclip! I hope you didn’t get a pushback from the YeLiners on dramabeans. From my experience at soompi, shippers can be very rabid if you ruin their precious thought-bubble. And the more immature the shippers are, the more they call on the mods to “protect” them from bitches like you and me.

For me, it was the episode on families, Episode 6 that had me thinking of family dynamics. When I wrote about Episode 6, I mentioned how Dr. Ye lent her money, NOT because he liked her “romantically,” but because he liked her as a person.

Here’s the dialogue:

Ye: Here, Doctor Woo.
BY: I’m sorry. I was going to borrow it from Doctor Kim, but she doesn’t have money either.
Ye: May I give you some advice? Don’t be so distant. Why can you borrow it from Doctor Kim, but not me?
BY: Pardon? (What’s this? Does he want to be close to me? What am I saying? I just borrowed money from him?)

Back then, I mentioned that he must have observed how embarrassed BoYoung was because of Dr. Kim’s indiscreet blabbering of her financial woes. Dr. Kim treated BoYoung like an Unnie scolding her irresponsible little sister (when she had no money either, lol). To me, it was clear that Dr. Ye didn’t understand the dynamics of family. His advice to BoYoung was ironic. “Why can’t you borrow money from Dr. Kim, but not from me?”

If HE had to ask that question, then he wouldn’t understand the answer. Dr. Kim’s tactless chatter demonstrated that she WAS truly a family member while Dr. Ye’s formality proves that he was indeed outsider.

There’s a familiarity between family members that outsiders cannot duplicate.

Family members can say things, even hurtful things like BoYoung said about her adopted brother. But they still remain intact as a family. They know that whatever happens, forgiveness and understanding will eventually come.

Family members don’t have to appreciate each other all the time, like JooYoung who was half-dismissive and half-deferential to his father. In the end, they’ll stick with each other.

Even MinHo played down the sad affair of his birthday buffet when BoYoung threatened to shed tears over it. He said,

MH: It turned out to be for my brother. They didn’t even remember my birthday. I misunderstood.
BY: You must have been disappointed.
MH: Meh. Not really. The truth is, it’s always been like that. It’s always about my great brother. They’re not interested in me.
BY: (I thought he had everything because he’s from a rich family. But he’s worse off than my brother who’s loved by his adopted mother.
MH: What? Why are you crying?
BY: What? I was just thinking about how sad you must have been.
MH: Forget it. I’m not sad. I probably upset my parents more times than they’ve upset me. I’ll call it even.

Like BoYoung and JoYoong, MinHo realized that even though he had ambivalent feelings about his family, he’d made PEACE with the family that he had. That’s the one and only family he had and he was fine with it.

It’s NOT at all like what it is said by this poem, “Family” by Choi Bum Young. This poem had strict instructions to what a family should be – which I disagree with. Did you notice it? Read it again.

Family
by Choi Bum Young

If you can’t say you’re happy when you’re happy,
You’re not family.
A sweet and soft ice cream cone
Isn’t enough to become a family
Pain, happiness, and love must be shared.
And you must endure all hardships in prayer
Until you can feel it together.
That’s how we become a family.
You must be able to express your sadness
And be able to cry together to be a family.
You must be able to express your happiness
and be able to be happy for one another to be a family.
You must feel like you’re under the same blanket
no matter where you are to be a family.

To me, the poem is saying:

If you’re not X, Y and Z, then you’re not a family.
You must do A, B, and C, to become a family.

I’m not sure if the poet was being flippant about this or had a subtext. But to me, I found the concept of this “family” too rigid and inflexible. That isn’t how it is in real life. The definition of a family has no strict do’s and don’ts in real life, like in this poem.

In real life, each family comes with its own particular and unique baggage. Sometimes, people like BoYoung, JooYoung and MinHo, can’t express her true emotions, like resentment or pain. However, this does NOT mean her family doesn’t exist. The family still exists whether she chooses to acknowledge the others or not.

To me, this is the point of this episode: that family members are made up of people WILLING to UNBURDEN themselves NATURALLY to the others, without a sense of obligation, or command like Dr. Ye’s imperial, “May I give you an advice,” or dictate like the poem’s attitude of “You must do so or you can’t be a family!”

BoYoung couldn’t open up to Dr. Ye about needing money because she wasn’t connected to him that way. They weren’t at that stage of the relationship where she could UNBURDEN herself. Dr. Ye’s advice not to be distant wouldn’t make her closer to him. On the contrary, he confused her. “Pardon?”

Look at MinHo. At first, MinHo tried to cover up his embarrassment, too. And had BoYoung not discovered him eating ramen at her neighborhood convenience store, then he would have continued to lie about the truth. But once the game was up, he opened up to her, and his family situation. BoYoung wasn’t an outsider.

…Which brings me back to your point about Dr. Ye seeing BoYoung as a child.

Yes, I agree. He sees her as a little girl. Even a crybaby with the emphasis on BABY. He doesn’t see her as GIRLfriend material, but as a girl that he has to defend.

His indecisive “Defcon moment” in the bathroom was a giveaway.

I posted about it briefly on my blog about Vanishing Points.

You see, BoYoung specifically told him that she felt upset with MinHo during their luncheon. She said, “I was upset because he said something that I didn’t want to be revealed.” Sure, he retaliated in a petty way by embarrassing MinHo (and he breached confidentiality). But what I found PATHETIC about him was that after the incident, he had misgivings. He was ANALYZING whether he did the right thing or not, and he was down on himself because he had COMPROMISED his principles. (facepalm!)

The script had already shown us (although very subtly) how a TRUE OPPA would have behaved in situations like this.

Did you see what happened with Defcon in Episode 7? When he asked that patient to remove her bra? The girl came running out saying, “Oppa! I can’t get my X-ray here! That man told me to take off my bra!” She was as upset as BoYoung. She was outraged like BoYoung! That man did her wrong! And her Oppa – as to be expected – instantly jumped into the fray in her defense.

That is what Dr. Ye should have done. pwahahaha.

This scene was a hint from the script that if Dr. YE truly saw BoYoung as a GIRL then, there should have been a “Point of No Return” for him. He should have felt OKAY putting that jerkface MinHo in place, instead of having that “moment of crisis” conversation with his mirror image.

What personal principles was he quibbling about, when his GIRLfriend was hurt by that big bad meanie MinHo? Just punch him, Dr. Ye, or grab him by the collar and growl at him to treat BoYoung nicely because she’s your girl…err… GIRL (in all caps).

Please. Just punch MinHo, and I’ll be rooting for you.

I’ll even spam my blog with hearts.

LOL this!😂😂 This is exactly what I see everywhere, that how pretty and manly Dr. Ye is. And there are PhD thesis written on his ‘veins’.😶😑
Haha coming back to the show, I totally agree with what you said above. I also loved that post where you said that while Bo Young eats candy or have lavish dinners with Dr. Ye, it’s with Min Ho that she celebrates life and death, and ( like on tonight’s episode, she cried in front of him in pain since Dr. Ye rejected her. Sorry about the spoiler).
I would be very disappointed if Dr. Ye turns out the one with Bo young, because it seems to me that no one understands Bo young like Min Ho does. In front of him she can be herself. On the other hand, in front of Dr. Ye she’s all filmsy and on daydreaming mode. Plus I am not ready to define her feeling towards Dr. Ye as love. It’s more admiration, and there’s no progression in their relationship, which is there in min ho-bo young.
Also, since you mentioned checkov’s gun, I’m seeing this repetitive pattern with the previews. Like EP 9’s preview gave us the assumption that Dr. Ye will return her feeling upon confession, but that didn’t happen. Likewise, EP 10’s preview gave the impression that he’s perturbed, feeling sad after rejecting Bo Young. But will that be the decisive moment for the episode? The misleading previews are really bugging me.:/

  2. pwahahahaha. We always jokeed around in our PMs about the fangirls. But back then, we couldn’t do anything about them because the mods were friends with them, and those fangirls was how the pages got views. When pages got lots of views, then revenues were made. More clicks, more revenues. Simple economics. But this is my personal blog and I don’t need revenues. What I do need and want, however, are the smarter fangirls who can appreciate more than the actors’ veins, hands, pecs, and other physical attributes.

Where’s shooastrid? I miss her, too.

I don’t mind spoilers. Spoilers cut to the chase and tell me what the main points are. But I don’t watch previews. I try to avoid them because they’re misleading.

Of course, MinHo understands BoYoung better. He’s known her longer, too so he gets her quirks. That’s why he knows which buttons to push to get her riled up. Plus, I like what he said to her about poems. Hmmm… I think I’ve to post about this.

Also it bugs me NOT knowing why he rejected BoYoung like that in college. There must be a reason. And there IS a reason — the scriptwriter already hinted about this in Dr. Kim’s divorce. Let me write about this next….thanks.

  3. I’d be very disappointed with the writer if Dr. Ye cries in regret because he rejected BY like how some fangirls are predicting now. Dr. Ye and BY’s connections are not that close yet for him to cry just because of that. There’s not much progress in their relationship, imo, for the last 8 episodes. He still offers her advice, and she still pardon him. That’s way too impersonal.

You know that feeling where you just wanna be in love with someone in order to feel giddy. I personally do that sometimes when I feel lonely and I see a cute guy helping me even if that’s his job. I keep coming back to get a glimpse of him and it makes me happy till the novelty wears off. Or maybe there’s a cute professor who’s really good at his job and being friendly with students and you fall in love for awhile. (Maybe it’s just me, I can be weird sometimes). Anyway, my point is, it’s an illusion, just infatuation, and you don’t really plan on doing anything about it unless you slipped and accidentally confessed. I haven’t seen ep 9 but I saw a clip and that happened, I think.

  4. He could cry buckets but that would only make me suspect him even more. Did you see how he’s refused to talk to his ex-girlfriend?? That was cold. I’m trying to figure out him out. He tries to avoid all communication with the girl. Is she a stalker? Based on the subs, he told her, “People will talk about us again, I really hate this. I don’t like attracting people at a place like this. I don’t like your pain becoming nonsense. I don’t like sending off Chief Park who’s precious to me with anything other than sad feelings.”

Except for when he said that he doesn’t liker HER pain being a topic of conversation, everything he said was egocentric. It was about what he liked, and not about how she felt. He could have asked her, “Why are you doing this. Please don’t. You’re only hurting/shaming yourself.” blah blah. blah. Even the guy in “Because This Is My First Life” wasn’t this cold and he was the original robotic unemotional guy. 🙂

  5. I miss her too! We had some good times then, didn’t we hehe.
I’m also hoping that the writer will give us the back story on why Min Ho rejected Bo Young. I’m scared though if he/she would.I have no idea where this is heading. Although your weekly poll keeps me entertained.😁😁

  6. I think I have a clue. It was in Episode 4. Let me finish writing it.

Oh goodness. Remember how pages we wrote on two? three? messages. I couldn’t keep track of your messages.

That was so much fun. We were throwing out ideas after ideas. I called them my “trial balloons.” I would test an idea on you ladies first to see how you would react. If it worked, it got released in the forum. If it didn’t work, I either ditch it or I’d work with your questions to make it better. I told you to play devil’s advocate most of the time and try to shoot down the balloon. 😂😱 And we laughed at our own nonsense.

    Good times. Good times indeed.

We’re doing it here too but this time we’re out in the open.

Hmmm. Maybe I should write a preemptive post for the Ye Liners lurking here. As the story progresses, they’re going to feel more oppressed and angry with my posts.

  7. Hahaha! The Flash Poll is entertaining, right? I should have designed it to be more provocative… just to rattle fangirls.

  8. “Now Boyoung is nicknamed Cry “baby” Boyoung” I think the “baby” appears only in the translation. They say “Ul Boyoung”. And ul is the root of the verb ulda=to cry. Cry BoYoung would sound weird in English and it’s a form of teasing in the end so “cry baby” fits in this context. Otherwise I agree with everything said. Not sure, as of episode 9, if Dr. Ye is still not interested. I think he’s sort of maybe considering a relationship now but decided to break all hopes of one in its infancy to not get to the same situation as with his ex. And now I’m having a bit of issues understanding nuances because I don’t really remember what exactly happened with his ex.

  9. Good to know! Thanks! So what’s the literal translation?

  10. Whoops! Accidentally hit send.
How does MinHo call her anyway? Do you mind breaking it down?

He “seems” to be interested BECAUSE he was told by his colleague to look for a “girl who LIKES you sincerely and whom you CAN like sincerely as well.”

My take on that is he’s “settling.” He’s settling for a girl with sincerity, and who gets along with fine.

Not the LOVE of his life. You know what I mean?

  11. Good evening (morning?) chingus!

So i’m conibg back home from office not in a really perfect mood tbh while having a weird feeling about today’s (I mean 10th) episode. I haven’t looked for any spoilers yet nor preview but there is a thing I want a hint on. Is it that bad as I predicted? (Dr Ye coming for BY because his heart hurts)
I have no problems with spoilers when I like but not love the show. I was resisting spoilers up until now in case of You forgot poetry but…maybe I should prepare myself today lol

And I agree about La-La-Land associations about that dance. Dr Yen was totally in that style while BY seemed to me more like Belle from Beauty& the Beast.
What I don’t understand is that what is the point in dating your supervisor at work (next possible chief even). It happens in real life but people tend to switch departments or smth not to have quarrels with their liver in such cases. Not criticizing but I would have never dated my direct supervisor and would have considered even dating a co-worker I see every day. Moreover, I don’t get the point of them being soulmates. Yes, they had problems in private lives but not really that similar + they like poetry (in case of Dr Ye, this Interest is motivated by BY because he doesn’t read poetry on his own when he has time)

  12. @Lespoir48, you’re right. The inevitable has happened. The writer has embraced laziness and going for the same old broody guy wins trope, yawn. I don’t think I’ll watch the drama anymore lol, already wasted a lot on this one. I will keep reading the blog posts though.
I also have this question to ask to myself though, why do I keep falling for the underdogs. Haha. Kdrama writers definitely hate them.

  13. Pwahahaha.
    Spoilers!!!
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
It’s the beach scene, right? And the firecrackers. I heard there were firecrackers and I said gulp! No. No. No. Too much for one girl.

  14. It was fun being your devil’s advocate hahaha. Funny how much invested I was in the investigations. Good old days indeed!
Looking forward to your new posts!^^

  15. Lol yes. Also the fact that Bo young kept thinking about dr.ye all the time they were in the beach.

  16. Yah! Kajjjiiimmmmmaaa! Don’t leave me. You better stick around me because I need ~ you, babe! ~

It’s only the 10th episode. It’s best that she gets Dr Ye now. That will give her time to come to her senses and come around.

I just tweeted another person earlier that it’d be ShinShip Skinship ShinSHIT if he fails.

  17. HAHAHA I’m not leaving you! I’m just disappointed at how the story is evolving right now.

  18. @Nearsea @packmule3
    NOOOO!! Why why show
What the hell? Why is it okay for him to reject her but then get her? Is it because he didn’t deny it as much as MH?
I haven’t seen the episode but I am as furious as in The Best Hit times.

  19. I noticed that they were putting on too many fluffs like the cotton candy fantasies in Ep 8, when all they wanted was to bridge the beginning (MinHo and Boyoung fighting) and ending (the poem with MinHo turning away).

That was the story arc or the overarching plot. And meanwhile we had the minor stories of the divorce which mirrored the argument of MH and BY, and the impending retirement. Ye started his Ahjussi romance with IU, I mean Boyoung.

But the cotton candy and the nightclub scenes were fluff.

Episode 9: retirement scene and the death of Ye’s mentor. I thought that – his backstory – was rushed but oh well, I didn’t want to dwell too much in his past. I just needed to know how that would affect his resolution or stubbornness.

  20. Wait. I haven’t watched it either!! Don’t kill me. Here! I’m giving you nearsea. Kill her first.

  21. Did you finish watching the show? Rats. It’s not up yet on dramafever. Where did you watch it?

  22. @packmule3
From my experience we have to wait 3 more hours for Dramafever subs which are the fastest so far for this show

  23. Wait. I haven’t watched it either!! Don’t kill me. Here! I’m giving you nearsea. Kill her first.—-
😂😂😂😂 ROFL. I have not watched the subbed episode yet, @Lespoir48, @Packmule3.😄😄 I have only watched the YouTube clips.
I don’t think I have the patience to watch one hour of fluff, talking to Dr.Ye in imagination.

  24. Three more hours?

Rats! I’ve a late afternoon meeting that will end past 8pm (if I can wrap it up quickly lol).

I can watch it on the ride home. That’s one “perk” of having an arm in a cast. You get chauffeured all around. Lol.

But you raised a good point. Why should YE get the girl? When he keeps on telling her “can I give you an advice? Get straight to the point?” Meanwhile we have MH waiting for her to blabber on and on about another guy. Right now, I wish MH would go back to his jerk mode. He’s funnier that way and less pathetic. If he’s going to get dumped in the end, I don’t want him looking pathetic.

  25. Hahaha. This is what I’m talking about. We were always joking behind the scene.

Hey! If you haven’t watched it, then why are you such a Debbie Downer?! You’re giving the MinHo shippers a heart attack.

If she’s only talking to Ye in her fantasy, then that’s good.

I’m telling you: MinHo has another ace up his sleeve. His reason for rejecting her a long time ago. It’s something that disillusioned him about her. He said that she has a “disgusting” true self.

  26. about how Minho is calling her, it’s “ul bo young”. That is just the root of the verb “to cry” + her name. I only know enough Korean to know that verb but I don’t know much more 🙂

As for episode 10, I haven’t seen anything from it but I bet whatever happens between Bo Young & Dr Ye is not what that dramatic or enough to be end game. I’m fairly sure MinHo is still the lead otherwise it makes no sense. The story we’ve been told this far seems different. We’ll talk about it tomorrow I guess 🙂

  27. Are you heading to bed soon? Good night. 😴

Yes. It’s still MH but this troublemaker nearsea 😈 nearly gave us a “doom and gloom” report. But if it’s Ye right now, it’s still good because we have enough time for BY to realize that she’s been dealing with fantasy. Snap out of it already girl! It’s annoying that we get all these fluffy fillers. Like the cotton ball fantasies, the LaLa Land dance sequence when there’s a perfectly good guy in front of her putting in all the stops to make her happy. What’s one $3 sugar candy bought on a whim when Minho who planned the fireworks event?

  28. Okay, one more hour to wait & then I will decide if I should continue watching. It will be based on today’s epsiode’s hints and poems.

And I totally second that i hate seeing MH as a pity boy, his jerk self was sexier. But still I liked that he apologized. He should confess to Cry BY to make her think about him again. UGHHH
