Poem a Day: “You Too!” Defense

Normally, I would hate using the “Tu Quoque” or “You Too!” defense because it’s a childish move and a fallacious argument. I dislike it when my sons would argue, “But Mommm, Drew did it too” and I detest it even more when a religious tenet advocates a primitive eye-for-an-eye, ear-for-an-ear, life-for-a-life legal retribution.😂

But here in this kdrama, the script is pointing out the hypocrisy in having double standards hence its insistence on the “You Too!” argument. That’s one of the keynotes to remember in this drama: “When he does it, it’s adultery; when I do it, it’s romance.” We have a similar idiom: “What’s good for the gander is good for the goose,” meaning an individual (or situation) should be judged and treated in the same manner that another individual and situation is judged and treated.

Unfortunately, the blind spot for most viewers is MinHo. Take for instance, the confrontation of MH and Ye in this episode. Thanks Oli for writing their conversation down. It saved me a lot of time.

Ye: May I give you some advice? Please be polite to Doctor Woo.

I thought this was a stupidly tepid reaction. If he thought (incorrectly, of course) that MH deliberately PUSHED BoYoung and didn’t pick her up afterwards, THEN why is this even a question of POLITENESS. He should have been warning MinHo the jerk, like this, “Damnit, MinHo! You pushed Boyoung and didn’t even help her up! Hey, jerk! Don’t you dare manhandle her again or you’ll get it from me next time.” His indignation for his girlfriend being hurt was curiously lacking. It’s just like the BATHROOM INDECISION he displayed Episode 8.

MH: Pardon? Polite?

And I agree with MinHo. To me, he must have been bewildered that all Doctor Ye could accuse him of was “impoliteness.” Facepalm.🤦‍♀️

Ye: I know you two are casual with each other because you were college classmates. But this is a hospital, not a school. Doctor Woo isn’t your friend, but your senior and superior. So please have some manners.

I agree with Oli’s comment that it was rude of Ye, considering that Boyoung was MH’s friend first and foremost – even if he didn’t fancy her as a woman. Their bonds of friendship superseded their professional relationship.

But I also question Ye’s take on MinHo’s early behavior as “casual behavior” or mere “horseplay” between two old college classmates. MinHo left BoYoung, his girlfriend, on the ground and walked away. Didn’t it strike him that that behavior was MEAN even among “casual” friends. lol. His Yeliners were MORE indignant about MinHo’s behavior that he was. They, at least, were spitting mad but their romantic oppa only viewed the whole incident as a “casual” encounter between MinHo and BoYoung. Facepalm again. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

MH: I’m sorry, but Bo Young isn’t my senior or superior. She’s the girl I like.

Go MinHo! You’re spot on! You have to fight for the girl and draw the line. Incidentally, THIS is why JH from Reply 1988 lost. He didn’t have the gumption to go after Deoksun or the courage on conviction and love to fight for her.

Ye: What did you say?
MH: I like Bo Young. Are you wondering why I harass her? It’s because I hate the sight of it.

There, he said it himself!  Minho admitted to harassing her. MinHo called a spade a space. He wasn’t afraid to call it. But Ye, the boyfriend, couldn’t even call MinHo out on it. He was too wishy-washy and only deemed MinHo’s behavior as “impolite” or “familiar” behavior. He thought he was “lacking in respect” for a “superior,” when MinHo was CLEARLY being mean and spiteful to BoYoung. That was why MinHo sounded incredulous earlier when he said Ye, “Pardon? Polite?”

MH: I hate the sight of Bo Young liking another man. I know you’re dating. I even saw the two of you with my own two eyes.

Bravo! Don’t be afraid to admit to your feelings. Ye couldn’t do this when BY was already HIS to claim and defend.

Ye: Then I won’t have to explain further. It seems like we came to a conclusion. I suggest you get over Doctor Woo.

MH: No. I can’t do that. Bo Young might not know right now, but I’m going to confess soon. I can’t accept that Bo Young is dating you. Didn’t you reject Bo Young at first? Do you know how hurt Bo Young was? But you like her now? If your mind is able to change that quickly who’s to say you won’t hurt her again?

This is the beginning of the “Tu Quoque” reasoning. MinHo was reminding Ye that Ye hurt BoYoung. But Ye promptly answered that , “Well, you too!” without knowing the facts.

Ye: I know how hurt she was. But you shouldn’t be the one to say that. Didn’t you reject Doctor Woo and hurt her first?
MH: What did you say?

lol. The old-timers here in this blog sensed right away that there was a double meaning to his words here. To newcomers here on my blog, read my comment on this:

I also speculated on BY’s possible gold-digging ways here:

I may be wrong but to me things don’t add up with MinHo. He just has too many different recollections of the past events for it to be a fluke. It’s just like the movie, “A Season of Good Rain.”

Ye: I’ll say this again. I suggest you get over Doctor Woo. I can’t accept you having feelings for her either.

And HE walked away. Sigh… He didn’t really have impact on me. Rating as a boyfriend: 4.5/10. pwahahaha. 😈😂

  1. Ye liners said that MH did not get the girl because he kept hesitating confessing to her. I don’t think that’s particularly true for MH. He wasn’t really taking his time, it’s all about respect. The girl just got rejected. Let her heal a little. I think MH accomplished just that. She was moping less ans she was smiling. Besides, it is too early to confess, you will either look like a rebound or the girl a flirt.

No, I don’t want a bf like Dr. Ye either. As much as I loved tsundere leadsin kdrama, in real life, it’s better to have someone who can be upfront and honest with you, who’ll laugh and joke with you, instead of poker face. And I don’t like people who gives unwarranted advices, it’s rude and I tend to do the opposite of it.

I’m counting on your site for the finale unni. I suddenly found myself on a kdrama slump so I’m back to jdrama and planning to watch Yoo Yoon Seok’s dramas because I felt sorry for Chilbong.

  2. I literally watched 8 episodes of 1988 before watching this last episode 14.. haha I was dreading it.. but was proud of MH for finally facing up to his emotions and saying everything out loud (even though it wasn’t to BY..baby steps). 1988 Jung Hwan’s silence really drove me kind of crazy.

Will we see college day BY + MH? I hope so.. I feel like that’s one of the last steps to introducing MH’s true self. I also want to see what made BY ‘disgusting’ (and I have been dying for this revelation like at least 5 episodes ago hah) because in those flashback episodes from college he seemed happy with the attention and was sharing those knowing looks and smiles with her and all of a sudden he rejects her coldly. I have a feeling it’s what you speculate in former posts but having confirmation of it would be great lol.

His emotions seemed really grown up in ep 14. The other times we kind of see him whiny, joking, acting like a kid or too over the top excited but his sadness was really solemn and real in this episode. I always knew he was a multifaceted character, but the writer did a great job of portraying that in this episode. PLEASE writer don’t toy with our emotions any longer. I think 2 episodes could be the right amount of time to disclose all of this. In Reply 97 episode 15 is where we get the revelation about the misunderstanding between the brothers (both between Uncle & Dad and TW & YJ). So I think we’ll get what we’ve been asking for soon! If anything I want MH to have friggin closure for himself!

  3. Also, when do you sleep PM? I went to bed at 3 watching ep 14 and can barely remember my own name this morning haha

  4. @mai you’re right. The writer gave MH some depth. I think that he is the most developed character in this series. Nevermind him acting petty. (I haven’t watched 13 and 14 yet but that’s what they said he
acted like) That’s normal when you’re hurting. Even adults do that (points finger at Dr. Ye when he tried to humiliate MH via his grades. That is a personal attack on him by Dr. Ye)

  5. Please could you help me?? I search everywhere the Shin Kyung Rim poetry (episode 12. when Nam-woo have a call for his mom and he just lend the box Mi-rae infront of the shop.)I hope ypu could help me.Thank you so much 🙂
