100 Days My Prince: Fan Service Alert!

lol. This is a public announcement. I’m announcing it so the public will see it, okay?

This is supposed to make fans swoon.

Apparently, girls fantasize about men rolling up their sleeves to do some manly labor.

Like working that millstone.

because ooooooooohhhh. Those forearms!!!

Seriously now, for me, a massive part of the fun of watching a kdrama with a popular guy is watching how the director milks the opportunity. (Keeping an eye on you, Park Hyung Sik, Yook SungJae and Cha EunWoo. Lol.) Is he going to do a shower scene? Is he going to disrobe? Is he going to do an upside-down-double-backflip-with-extra-whipped-cream kiss?

So far, I’ve been quite surprised that I haven’t seen a whole lot of outrageous, gratuitous (remember that word) fan-service.

…which I think is a credit to the actor KyungSoo.

As I’ve written in my post on shower scenes, I find it rather insulting and demeaning that an actor’s fine skills have to be overshadowed by tawdry gimmicks. KyungSoo shows great potential. I think he has an honest connection to his character and communicates the meaning of the script in an organic and believable way. He doesn’t need shower scenes or any more potty humor (like in the beginning episodes) to carry the role.

At this point, if he suddenly appeared before me, in the middle of this pumpkin patch, with rolled-up sleeves, (fam service), cradling a puppy (fan service) in one arm and a baby in another (fan service), looking sooo 21st century, I’d feel cheated. Go back to your Joseon world, buster! 😂😂

  1. I think that is the allure of DKS for me. I have researched him and he loathes fan service. He has never been a willing participant in EXO when asked to do fan service on stage. In fact it is well known that he is very reluctant (in some instances flat refuse) when screaming girls ask him to do “aegyo” on stage or during interviews (when all his fellow EXO mates consent willingly). Also he is unafraid to speak his mind when he feels uncomfortable (yes like WD) about skinship (this is a new word for me – thank you KDrama) scenes. You’ve watched Hyung (My Annoying Brother)? Well there was that scene where he was at a bar and some random lady came up and made out with him? He told the PD he didn’t like the context of that scene and wasn’t comfortable with it so they had the actress put her hand between their lips when she manhandled him. And again in the movie Pure Love where the actress Kim SoHyun (child actress so she’s not a newbie) was just shy of 18, he told the PD he would rather not have a kiss on the lips because it didn’t seem appropriate for the storyline and also probably because of her age…so they rewrote it. I think for him, if it feels organic and how it should fit in the storyline then he will do it, otherwise he will probably speak out and ask for a rewrite. That’s character. That’s moral fiber. That’s so WonDeuk. It will be interesting to see if he carries this through in his acting career as the pressure for fan service increases. I dearly hope not. I really like what I see thus far from DKS.

  2. What’s this? A dissertation on KyungSoo Do? hahaha. You sure did your research. A++++

Has he appeared on any variety show? I wouldn’t mind watching him on Running Man. I’m pretty sure he hasn’t been on 2 Days, 1 Night because I watch 2D1N regularly. I would’ve remembered him.

I don’t recall that bar scene in My Annoying Brother but I’m trying to jog my memory…was it when his big brother was trying to hook him up with a prostitute or something so he’d lose his virginity? No, I can’t remember the kiss.

But good for him! I’m glad he spoke up. The directors were probably also willing to listen to his input because they knew that he’d done his homework and understood the script and his character. It would’ve been harder to argue his case if he didn’t have established credibility with the director. Moving forward, the success of this kdrama undoubtedly increases his leverage when picking a new project. He doesn’t have to do fan service if he doesn’t want to.

Same A++++ from me too. Great!

  4. Good morning, Oli!
You didn’t wake me up. It’s 6:08 am here and I’m having coffee, mocha roll and some fruits.
Trying to catch up Third Charm. Had to go on an illegal site to watch this now that DF is gone. 🙁

  5. Oh! I need to be more careful I guess.
Sad news that one with DF but well.. thanks for the reminder that I need to catch up too

  6. Just finished Ep 5. I’m going to reactivate my Best Kdrama Boyfriend (BKB) award again…. Will post something about THE new keeper boyfriend. 🙂

  7. Haha…yeah I tend to research the actors that intrigue me. I profile everyone I meet. I am insatiably curious. Unless they measure up off camera as they do on camera, they don’t deserve me as a fan 😂

Yes to the scene in Annoying Brother – it was when his brother was trying to get him out and introduce him to the world and brought him to a bar.
