Fluttering Alert: Tsutsuloo’s List of Fluttery Moments for Ep 5

I’m posting her comment here so others can respond to her. Thanks, tsutsuloo! Awesome post!

*****************************************

Before I describe my favorite scenes (everything that was not the cartoonishly evil porcelain robot), I want to express appreciation for @packmule3’s thoughtful analysis of Woo-Hyun’s anxiety about Yoo-Jung leaving him behind. It leads me to wonder about his upbringing by his very young mother. It seems Na Hwa-Jung was about 18 or 20 when she had her son. 32 years later, she’s still appallingly immature and self-centered. She’s is a subject worth exploring in a separate post. (But seriously, her fake-cancer shenanigans are exhausting me. Hospitals don’t work this way and a nurse would’ve ratted out Mom and Jung Ho ages ago. Drama logic, I guess.)

Back to my fluttery moments. It’s been a long time since I’ve grinned this much while watching a drama.

Their playful repartee and emotional connection at Yoo-Jung’s hospital bedside is a sight to behold and absolutely my favorite moment. Fans often measure the k-drama romances by skinship and kisses but, for me, shared laughter is the height of romantic gestures. And I’m grateful for the show’s generosity in this regard.

I loved this scene on two levels—for the warm affection building between the OTP and the masterful performances of Chun Jung-Myung and Yoon Eun-Hye who project so much feeling through their gestures, eyes, and smiles.

Hospital scene: sticking close (0:07:46)
The whole scene had me grinning til it hurt for all the reasons you list. Throughout the scene, they were so close that the over-the-shoulder shots of Yoo-Jung’s face, Woo-Hyun’s hand was almost always visible by her pillow. At about 0:07:46, when she’s talking about her brother’s overprotectiveness, Woo-Hyun’s finger briefly fingers the edge of her pillow. He keeps his hand close because he’s literally leaning towards her.

The Abeoji connection in the van (12:33)
I’m keen to see how the show will draw out the connection our lovers have through Yoo-Jung’s dad. When she asked him about the phone call to the man he calls Abeoji (*her* actual father!) and follows up with questions about his birth father, it’s the first time he told her anything about his family. Neither of them are overshares so anytime they talk about themselves is a significant demonstration of trust. At this point, however, she has yet to answer the questions he asked about her father when they were glamping.

Note: Yoo-Jung and her mother experienced the fire when she was 8 years old. It seems she’s been estranged from her father for the past decade. Since her character is 29, what exactly triggered Yoo-Jung’s separation from her father?

———————————————

Jealous Woo-Hyun (0:15:25)
Chun Jung-Myung has the best “jealous face.” I loved how he used the CEO shut down the horseplay. But perhaps this is not the first time he’s “wondered” about Sung Hoon?

During their walk on the clamping date at the end of Ep. 4, Woo-Hyun probed Yeo-Jung about her friendship with Sung Hoon:
Yeo-Jung: It’s so nice. I came here with Seong Hoon before but I never knew it was so pretty here.
Woo-Hyun: If you guys come to the villa together, you guys must be really close.
Yeo-Jung: We’ve been friends for over ten years so we are really close. (Woo-Hyun nods appreciatively) But we never went alone like this because we never know what others might say. We always came together with his family. (Woo-Hyun nods again.)

———————————————

Dongsaeng predicts the future (0:17:52)
The team is strategizing how to present the Milk couple as perfect lovers. When Yoo-Joon suggest his sister and Woo-Hyun spend the night at each other’s homes, I cracked up when Woo-Hyun shudders at the thought and protests he’s feeling queasy. Right at this moment, the thought is just too much but he’ll get there soon enough.

Woo-Hyun’s phone face (0:19:24), (0:30:12)(
Whenever he texts or talks to Yoo-Jung on the phone, he often has the smallest, sweetest of smiles.

Your face is brighter
Yes, I also loved how he bashful he was as he simply described Yoo-Jung as a good person. Mom is a deeply problematic character but I enjoyed the warmth they briefly shared when she observes how her son has been more gentle and that his face is brighter. Thank the dramagods Woo-Hyun holding his own face has been GIFed for posterity. He’s got full “bright face” in packmule3’s screenshot of his asking to bring his girlfriend to the restaurant.

A taste of home: the impromptu picnic
Look how far our boy’s come! In Ep. 2, the morning after her drunken overnight stay, Yoo-Jung mistakenly assumed the second setting at breakfast was for her. But she immediately understood Woo-Hyun’s rationale for setting extra settings and coaxed him to dine with her. Later in the same episode, at another solo meal at home, Woo-Hyun he smiled at the memory of her sitting across from him. And now, they share her father’s dried pollack soup, the closest she’s ever come to capturing the memory of her mother’s cooking. Yoo-Jung’s euphoria at tasting this soup is so endearing.

His gaze (0:41:21)
The way he looks at her at the clinic is heart stopping—especially when she shines her phone light on her gift. In her Ep. 5 spoiler, @packmule3 succinctly describes this as “He falls in love with her some more. Who wouldn’t?” *sigh* Me too—I’m falling in love with the way he’s falling in love. I really adore them both.

Sweaty OTP (0:45:21)
In that moment when they run back her place and collapse in a sweaty heap, am I the only one who imagined them exhilarated after a vigorous, sweaty bout of sex?

Asking for a favor in the atrium (0:44:21)
@packmule3 explored the concept of reciprocity in an earlier post. Growing closer means more comfort in asking favors but he’s a bit surprised at how readily Yoo-Jung agrees to visit his sick mother. I love her openness and generosity with him—and that she invited him into her sanctuary.

The bank loan argument (0:48:00) and apology chair (0:56:56)
Their argument about Yoo-Jung’s “interference” was painful, which makes the truth and Woo-Hyun’s apology all the sweeter. “Fluttery” isn’t the right word here but I actually enjoyed watching Woo-Hyun’s regret and discomfort. Y’all know I’m fond of epistolary romances and was thrilled to have his perfect note (in addition to the poem she wrote on the roses). I loved that Woo-Hyun acknowledged he was at fault while giving context for his over-reaction. Generally speaking, I love how the gifts and favors they’ve exchanged are all deeply meaningful and personally crafted. (Saving the bank loan wasn’t “hand-crafted” but it comes from a place of Yoo-Jung supporting his dream.)

The drive to the hospital
Okay, there’s nothing fluttery about speeding to the hospital with a stabbing victim bleeding in the back seat but there were a couple things I loved about this scene. We’ve seen how operational Woo-Hyun can be a crisis; seeing people keep cool under pressure is all kinds of awesome. As an adult who’s only been driving for less than four years, I can relate to Yoo-Jung’s freakout while driving and it’s kind of hilarious that the stabbing victim had to console the driver.

The kiss
@packmule3’s “Hufflepuff analogy” was hilarious. I generally hate kisses-as-cliffhangers. And it’s worse when one of the party is drunk or loses consciousness (see Witch’s Court Ep. 6 0:43:42 and C-drama Mr. Right Ep. 29 0:19:21).

But I found the kiss is sizzling when part of the Viki Highlights reel. It’s quite compelling with Chun Jung-Myung’s lovely voice whispering, “The favor mileage you owe me. I’m using them now. Disguised romance. Show couple. Let’s do that with me.”

  1. Thank you for this and your other blog posts! Loved the analysis of Ep 5, which made me want to rewatch it so I can catch all the small details that you all saw! I actually was very impressed by how calm WH was while he was being driven to the hospital by YJ. He informed his doctor hyung about his injury and what was needed, then consoled YJ and got her to calm down too. I don’t know why but I found WH extremely charming during this car scene.

  2. “I don’t know why but I found WH extremely charming during this car scene.”

@joonminfan—I know, right? Competence is so attractive. I love that the show makes a point of showing both of our lovers having a strong work ethic *and* a high level of domestic competence.

  3. I agree. A good personality, good work ethic, and competence are such charming qualities. I’m tired of the old-school lead characters where the male lead is always cold, rude, mildly abusive and the female lead is always a damsel in distress. Characters like WH and YJ are so refreshing!

  4. Thanks for your sharing on your list of fluttery moments in episode 5.

The show just gets better don’t you think. I am so drawn to the leads that I am not able to identify the flaws of the show.. I am like YJ when she is in love.. When I am so much in love with the drama that I am not able to identify the flaws of it…

I am just like you… I am grinning alot with this drama… Loved the dialogues, the gazes, the small gestures that speaks volume…

I loved all the moments u listed… I also enjoyed the scene which YJ was driving to hospital… The way she sobs just make your heart melts and you want to protect her and assure her that everything is fine.. That is why I can understand why WH would want to assure her that he will be fine and console in spite of his own injury… He is so in love… That is why that kiss at the end of the episode..

Ja ja ja….. By God you blush me you must be part of the perverted team and I am from your team.

  6. Heeyyy, tsutsuloo wrote this post. Not me!!! Who are you calling perverted?

    Moi?
    😂

@agdr03 and I were NOT thinking of sweaty sex when we discussed their night jog. We were actually criticizing that they didn’t take showers after that sweaty exercise. I hope his deodorant was working that night. 🤪

So true. When I watched the first episode, I clocked all the negatives—the stilted supporting actors, the too-bright lighting, the distracting lip color, choppy editing, blah, blah, blah—but I knew right away that there was something special about these two characters. When you scan interweb’s positive feedback, the same words come up again and again: kind, warm, charming, sweet, cute, lovable, natural, friendship, trusting.

I love an intricate storyline as much as the next person but I’m tired of k-dramas getting lost in their own cleverness (especially the fantasy genre). Consistent world-building as a difficult art and I’ve seen enough to expect Korean and Chinese dramas to fall off the rails by the end.

For me, rom-coms are the most rewarding and difficult of genres. Regardless of the show’s other technical problems, the deepening connection between Yoo-Jung and Woo-Hyun is more believable and heart-warming—and hilarious—than most of the dramas I’ve watched this year.

  8. @fary—Yes, I’m a wee bit perverted. (But really, I’m also the person who gasped when Mr. Darcy’s hand touched Elizabeth’s as he helped into the carriage …)

As a North American, I’ve found the lack of sex (or a sexual history) to be one of peculiarities of Korean dramas. I recognize Korea is a conservative culture but so many dramas—including this one—feature OTPs with zero sexual or romantic experience.

Yoo-Jung’s had crushes and has been in love but unapologetically draws the line at sexual intimacy. Woo-Hyun is wary of romance after a lifetime of watching his mother’s failed marriages. No doubt we’ll see true emotional intimacy but I’m curious how the show will address sex.

  9. @Tsutsuloo Out of joke: I am like the chubby girl in a children’s novel called Carousel: Romantic and sentimental. And I love Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite novels and I love the movie with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.

I also want to see how the part of the intimate relationships of our leading couple. In The prince of coffee Eun Hye Yoon was very nice and passionate, I hope that the lover alert are similar and of course better kisses too.

  10. I don’t know. Gong Yoo, the guy from Coffee Prince has a different vibe from Chung JungMyung.
If they were shoes, CJM is goody two shoes while GY is stilettos.
If they were ice creams, CJM reminds me of vanilla ice cream with oreos. Gong Yoo is dark chocolate with rum.
If they were a composer, CJM is Mozart, GY is Wagner.
If they were a painting, CJM is Impressionism art while GY is VanGogh.
hahaha. But don’t take my word for it. 😀
