Fluttering Alert: No Kiss, No Worries

The writer and director must have deliberated on whether or not to continue with the kiss cliffhanger in Episode 6. Many of us understandably felt cheated that they opted not to begin Episode 7 with WooHyun and YooJung in a lip-lock.

But now, I think they made the right call.

This 6-second opening scene is more intriguing than a 10-second kiss.

We have to ask ourselves: Where were they coming from? Where did they go last night? How long have they been together?

Her private residence was located on the 4th floor. The sign said so.

Her secret garden was in her private residence.

In Episode 5, after their late-night jog, she brought him to her secret garden. Later, she walked him out of the building. The secret garden couldn’t have been located elsewhere in the city.

So, now, inquiring minds would naturally want to know: where did they go and why were they just heading home now? 😂

I’m guessing that after WH’s confession, they had snuck out without bothering to change their clothes. They were together all night. She had been tipsy from the champagne in the last episode and now, she wasn’t. It probably took her an hour or so for that buzz to wear off.

It’s also fishy that when they got back in, she glamorized herself. Her cheeks needed only a light blusher because she was glowing. But her lips had to be on point. Meaning, they had to stand out and look kissable (again).

Lol. Clever product placement.

I know that walking out of their bedrooms as if nothing monumental happened was a cliche. He was looking at her when she flipped her hair and doubled-flipped her hair. lol. I thought that was a funny joke.

You see, when a girl flicks her hair in the company of a guy she likes, this body language is usually interpreted as a signal that she wants his attention. Flipping hair is a classic attention-grabber. The guy can’t resist looking at that swish of beautiful silky hair and that flash of the exposed skin of the neck. 😀

Here, WH looked her up and down.

However, when YooJung double-flicked her hair, she gave him a double-whammy.

She was NOT telling him, “Hey, look at me, I’m a goddess!” Instead, she was telling him, “I’m feeling so giddy that I want to cover my face.”

To me, that’s the reason he beamed at her. One second, she gave the air of a sexy siren, then the next, she looked like a shy girl in love. And he loved her for that. Who wouldn’t?

He knew that she took special care to make herself look pretty for him because this was the beginning of their new relationship. She was going all out with her appearance because she was treating this breakfast as if she was going out on an impromptu date with him. lol.

He appreciated her efforts.

The Donsaeng immediately commented on her looks.

DS: Noona, you don’t have anything scheduled for today. You’re going to hang around the house looking like that? (she signaled him to shush)
WH: She looks pretty. What’s wrong with that?

He was defending her because she made herself pretty for him and their “breakfast date.” Meanwhile, she swaggered because she knew he was defending her against her clueless brother.

DS: Noona, you keep acting strangely.

She just eyed him and ignored him. I like that both WH and YJ couldn’t hide their happiness. However, YJ was an actress. I expected her to cover up her emotions better than WH.

DS: Just act the way you normally do. (WH smiled at her.)
BFF: (coming in) Yoo Joon, let me eat too.
WH: (was looking down at his bowl again, lol) You’re here?

BFF: It’s only been a few days but you already act like you own this place. (WH looks at him) Can’t he get by on his own now? (sigh)

Rude!

YJ: No, he can’t leave just yet.

WH smiled at YJ and BFF saw that. BFF then tried the same jealousy game they did last night. Poor guy. I’m feeling second-hand embarrassment for him because he didn’t know that the situation was different now.

BFF: Hey, YooJung, eat this.

She glanced at fruit and then at WH. WH noisily munched his cereal. It’s become apparent to me that grinding his teeth must be his way of releasing tension and anger. If he could have chomped on BFF last night, he would have.

Also, unlike last night, he wasn’t looking at his bowl. This time, he was chewing while staring directly at YJ with a smile on his face.

lol. He was waiting for her next move!! To me, this indicated that he KNEW about the game that two of them were playing on him at last night. He also knew that the BFF hadn’t been informed of the change in their relationship so he was waiting to see how YJ would handle the awkwardness which she had originally created when both she and BFF plotted to play the jealousy game on him.

YJ: I’m on a diet. I’m okay, chinggu.
WH: (butting in) Chinggu? Just eat it as a way of accepting his sincerity. It’s just one piece of fruit.

Now, HE was pushing her to accept BFF’s food. lol.

Then he eyed BFF and cocked his head slightly to the side. He was daring BFF to go ahead and try to act sweet with YJ like the night before.

YJ: Shall I then? (asking confirmation from him)

To me, she was wondering why he didn’t protest like a jealous boyfriend. She was a bit confused by his easygoing and tolerant tone. He was positively encouraging her so she daintily plucked the fruit from BFF’s fork and nibbled it.

DS: Noona, can you please act like you usually do? You’re scaring me.
YJ: (getting annoyed) What did I do?
DS: What do you mean? You’re usually stealing SungHoon’s food and mine, and stuffing your face— (meaning, she usually acted rougher)
YJ: (stuffing HIS face) It’s good, isn’t it? (she bit her slice of honeydew) This tastes delicious.

Even the Donsaeng noticed that his noona has become more feminine lately. She used to roughhouse with both him and BFF, like their first meeting after he came back from the army, and when she met BFF after the glamping fire.

Later, BFF asked what the two of them did all night to have fallen asleep on the couch.

The brother thought that WH worked again on Legos while YJ exercised all night.

When BFF lifted her from WH’s side to carry her to her bedroom, WH objected.

WH: That’s something a boyfriend should do.
BFF: What could someone who’s in pain do when he can’t even change his clothes on his own?
WH: I can’t leave my girlfriend in another man’s arms just because of that (meaning, a pain from injury).

BFF: I’m well aware that you two are in a fake relationship. So it’s a bit strange to hear you going on and on about her being your girlfriend.
WH: I’m doing it because I have something to say. Whether it’s real or fake, only the two people actually involved in the relationship would know the truth about it, wouldn’t they?

He took her from BFF’s arms and carried her to her room.

BFF: Let’s talk for a moment.
WH: Let’s do that.

After he left her bedroom, she stirred. Cheekily, she mimicked him.

YJ: “I can’t leave my girlfriend in another man’s arms just because of that.” I love it!

lol. She was pleased with his jealousy and possessiveness. This made a nice change from earlier at breakfast when WH prodded her to accept BFF’s slice of fruit. She of course didn’t know that he was deliberately refusing to rise to the bait of BFF — like he did during the dinner. He downplayed that whole honeydew offer and even gave “his” consent because he wanted to show BFF that he wasn’t affected by their close affinity (especially now that he was a real boyfriend).

But his nonchalance confused her. She anticipated him to challenge BFF or to tell him to knock it off. She was, after all, his real girlfriend now. She hesitated when he encouraged their public and “sincere” display of affection instead.

Now, however, she heard what she wanted to hear from him. WH had read BFF the riot act. He displayed jealousy. His strong declaration that “I can’t leave my girlfriend in another man’s arms just because of that” thrilled her to pieces.

It’s noteworthy that she didn’t have to plan for this one. WooHyun showed aggression — first verbally (telling BFF that their relationship was none of his business) and then physically (by taking her away from BFF) — because he suspected that the BFF had more feelings for YJ than YJ herself was aware of.  YJ had friend-zoned the BFF but the way BFF would silently and rudely challenge him suggested that he had deeper feelings involved here.

Anyway….

Going back to the lack of kiss then, I don’t mind anymore that director and writer opted not to show us the kiss and instead left it to us to imagine what WH and YJ could have done together.

Just by watching WH and YJ behave the following morning — from their shyness to their happiness to their sleepiness — we could safely assume that they had the 💋Best Kiss of their Lives off-site and out-of-sight.

And that’s good enough for me.

I believe that, had the director chosen to film a more passionate kiss, the aftereffects of that kiss would have sucked out the beauty of the breakfast scene.

We the audience would have been titillated by the ATTRACTION (i.e., insta-lust) instead of the INTERACTION of our couple.

As it was, the breakfast scene entertained us because it gave new insights on the characters. We saw WH actively staking a claim on her and YJ slowly shifting loyalty from her BFF to WH. Already we could tell how the plot would move forward. Not only was our couple going to be saddled with the Wannabe Wife’s skulduggery but WH also would have to contend with BFF’s shadiness without disillusioning YJ.

I prefer this exposition of their budding relationship to a hot kiss any day.

  1. Thank you, I can understand your point of view on the subject and understand the beauty of your relationship beyond passion. But I confess that I want to see good kisses from they.

And I have a very active imagination and I also wonder: Where were they coming from? Where did they go last night? How long have they been together?.

Thank you, it’s a pleasure to read what you write.

  2. Lovely interpretation, @packmule3.

You’ve pointed out in an earlier post how Yoo-Jung’s new-found caution was in stark contrast to her previously outrageous posturing when she wanted to out her relationship with her ex.

Whatever intimacy Woo-Hyun and Yoo-Jung shared, it was private and precious—something worth protecting even from the audience.

  3. i bet that u’re really a psychologist…u just analyze their gestures ; smiles; body languanges as perfect as an expert 😊

  4. @packmule3 loved your analysis of this scene.

I laughed when SH asked dongsaeng what did the two of them do all night. He is echoing our thoughts! The director and scriptwriter are really good.

Just like you.. I am fine that we did not get to see the kiss… This drama is really keeping to its narrative of focusing on the interactions between the two leads. Their conversations give us insights to who they are. That made this drama so precious…

WH and YJ are really made for each other. He needs someone who understands his loneliness and she needs someone to protect her….

I found the conversation in the car after her facial treatment surprising… You would have thought that as an actress she would be comfortable with the attention she is getting because of her looks… However, She said she is afraid of men who is obsessed with how she looked. There is this innocence and insecurity in her that makes one wants to protect her….

I am waiting for your heart fluttering moments for this episode.

  5. hahaha. But no, I’m the one who pays THE psychologist to listen to my 1001 neuroses. This blog is my part of my therapy. (just kidding….)

  6. Thanks.

I’ve got to admit: I expected the kiss. In hindsight though I don’t care. What will the kiss add anyway to the plot that the conversation won’t? Besides, if you remove the kiss, then the writer and director are forced to think of a better plot and method to make the viewers feel the sexual tension (if that’s what they’re after: sexual tension) or emotional connection. 😀

That BFF creeped me out in the treatment room. It was a good thing he only tried to touch her hands. I could easily imagine him trying to touch her elsewhere (like her chest or something) while she was sleeping. Ugh.

  7. Thanks @packmule3 for the analyses and insights. I agree with the unspoken messages that went on at that breakfast. In addition, I was under the impression that when BFF offered YJ the fruit, WH told her to accept it,… as a sign that when he ‘gave his permission’ she was willing to accept the gift.

I felt that it was another unspoken message to BFF to say: “Look, she won’t accept it just because it’s you, but she will when I encourage her to.” He had gained a higher standing in ‘authority’ which she was allowing, and this was rubbed in BFF’s face.

  8. Shhhh… that’s what I thought too but let’s keep this a secret between us — and my 9 blog followers. hahaha
Femi-nazis will kill us if they think we support the “subjugation of women to paternalistic approval and authority blah-blah-blah whatever…” 😉
Sometimes it does feel nice to have a possessive, not-wimpy, civilized-Tarzan type of boyfriend.

  9. @packmule3 @growingbeautifully yes. Agree that “Sometimes it does feel nice to have a possessive, not-wimpy, civilized-Tarzan type of boyfriend.”

I believe YJ likes it too… That’s why she could fall in love with WH so quickly.. 😉

  10. @Anna Tan Definitely. Sometimes we have the too-often wimpy who don’t even ask the girl out or make decisions or take the initiative in much. Not boyfriend material either, those poor souls.

  11. Or those guys who can’t decide whether to be in a committed relationship or not.

What do the Koreans call this relationship? A “some” relationship?

As Beyoncé would say, “if you like it, then put a ring on it.” 😜

  12. I did say I was let down by not having a kiss after episode 6 but I got over it quickly after seeing episode 7. You’re right! I prefer this than a kiss.

Look at them holding hands at the beginning of that scene and sneaking into her building! I love it! I don’t even care whether they did kiss or not while they were out, their actions and words gave me more smiles, butterflies and joy! 😍

I really like the dialogues in this series and our milk couple makes it work so good and natural! They just make me happy and giddy 😍

If ever they do kiss, I want to be surprised! 😉 Surprised to the point that I might want to pinch someone because of it! LOL!

  13. Heeeyyy!! As long as YOU don’t pinch me, I’m fine with your “cute-aggression” tendencies.

It’s weird that this actor never really appealed to me before. I skipped his other kdrama, Heart to Heart, where he also played a doctor, oddly enough. I thought he looked like a youngster.

But after this kdrama, I can see the appeal. His boyish looks match up with YEH’s natural aegyo.

  14. hahahah I’ll try not to!

Oh I agree! I have never followed any of his dramas too but he’s just soooooooo cute with YEH that I’m so grateful he took on this drama! He does look very boyish and I like that in him.

I look at them and they’re just perfect. Do you think they both have the same round shaped eyes? LOL! That’s random! hahahah

They’re definitely cute and lovable together 🙂

  15. Just posted the soompi article for you. Enjoy!
