Fluttering Alert: Spoilers Ep 9

This is not a recap. Me = Korean = zilch

Think of this as a pictorial essay. It’s like me looking at a Lascaux cave paintings and saying, “Ooh! That’s a lone bull vs a stampeding herd of cattle.”

Episode 9 begins with WH back in his study. We get only a flashback of scene at Wannabe Wife’s office. No confrontation happened. He just got YJ to leave the room.

He and Wannabe exchanged words.  I guess, “You’re so persistent. I said no. Take it to the bank: I won’t have you.”

Meanwhile in her van, she’s wondering what that was all about. She makes up stories in her head.

BFF interrupts her thoughts and invites her out to dinner.

He confesses that he’s not gay and he used that as pretext to break through her wall.

She’s upset. Who wouldn’t? It’s like that Lascaux painting. She’s the lonely bull and BFF is like the stampeding herd of cattle with his 10 years of memories that she now has to re-think and see in a different light.

She goes hom home. Unnie hands her pictures of them secretly dating.

YJ is under martial law. Phone is to be confiscated. There’ll be No contact with WH. Bodyguards will escort her. And something about her van’s blackbox.

I guess, all that’s missing is a GPS tracker on her butt.

Meanwhile WH waits for her to call. He probably thinks that she’s upset with her because of Wannabe Wife.

She tries to sneak in at night to steal donsaeng’s phone but he’s using it.

The following morning, Unnie calls up WH and arranges meeting. She must be telling him that she’s disappointed that he reneged on his promise not to meet with YJ. Whatever.

Afterwards, the Choego group rep contacts her too. WH’s father listens in. It’s a Lascaux painting: The lone bull aka Unnie is being set up in a trap by a stampeding herd of cattle called the Choego Group.

Wannabe Wife encounters Stepmother. They talk. Again, it’s a Lascaux painting metaphor: Lone bull aka Wannabe Wife is about to get gored by a stampeding herd of cattle…or heifer… errr… Stepmother.

Then Wannabe Wife meets with WH’s father. Another Lascaux painting:  Lone bullshit Wannabe Wife is getting lectured by a stampeding Jabba the Hutt. She’s not holding up to her end of the bargain or something.

She looks ready to cry.

Back at YH’s company, YJ’s militia is being trained by Unnie on how to contain her insurrection. To his credit, donsaeng protests. The plan is to double-team her. If she escapes one bodyguard, the other bodyguard should capture her.

She goes on a hunger strike.

Meanwhile, Mr. “I’ll walk with you in the wind” Boyfriend goes to her father’s restaurant.

The following day, when she wakes up. There’s breakfast food on the table and a note…all from WH. In the letter, he tells her to eat well and to take care of herself because …. I dunno… he’ll walk with her in the wind and he’ll eat pollack soup with her while the wind blows behind them.

Meanwhile, he too is eating. I think he has two empty bowls in front of him both marked with M and M. ???

Probably referring to M&M candies? My guess is as good as yours.

BFF and YooJung have a talk on a very lovely autumn day. It’s a perfect to die of heartache.

Not sure what she said to him but going with the Lascaux principle again: One lonely bull named BFF meets a stampeding herd of reality and gets rejected. Heartache.

We see paparrazzi girl go to the set. Aha! We meet a possible stalker-suspect. lol. The director made sure that we saw that jacket and THAT hat.

Meanwhile, WooHyun faints in the clinic. Stephyung hooks him up to an IV?! Like really. That’s the answer of kdramas to all illnesses.

Back at YJ’s entertainment company, there’s the police report. No progress on the stalker case. He gets a YJ souvenir photobook for his trouble.

Unnie visits YJ and she’s ended her hunger strike. She’s now on an angry-eating mode.

Unnie joins her. The following morning they interview a candidate/trainee for their company. Well…well…who do we have here? The trainee is that patient of WH. She hands YJ food from her mother but she winks at YJ. I think she’s handing YJ another note from WH.

lol. I thought I captured her winking at YJ but I didn’t.

Anyway, YJ hands trainee a note, too, as she was about to leave building. lol. I’m hearing the words, “Trainee, you’re in!!” The trainee passes love note to WH.

YJ looks all chirpy. She packs her clothes. BFF wanders in and asks her what’s going on. She says nothing. He goes to her room to check and sees WH’s note. Ah. So the invitation to go to the beach was WH’s idea….

YJ’s about to escape but Donsaeng sees her. Donsaeng helps her out by lending her his phone. Meanwhile, WH paces up and down his room waiting to hear from her. He gets calls and he’s all smiles.

He buys her clothes.

She leaves. BFF intercepts. Tense moment for a while, but BFF only hands her his phone. I think she handed it back (not sure).

Sigh… this lonely bull never learned.

Beach Date!!

She dresses up in disguise. They do all the couple beach stuff. Just watch it yourself.

He opens his trunk and she sees all his gifts.

He also bought her a wetsuit. I think he bought her a size too small because she struggles to put it on. Think stuffing a sausage. pwahahaha.

But she’s sexy, anyway.

They watch the sunset. Eat. Dance. Just watch the scene yourself for the heart-flutterings.

Then, of course, they look for lodgings. As usual, he’s flustered and she’s chill to be spending the night in one room unchaperoned.  She gives him their couple rings (romantic but bad idea in kdrama. Usually this ring exchanges are followed by a break-up).

He turns her to face him and they kiss.

The end.

  1. Kumawo Chinggu! 🙂 I had to read this first before starting work. Lucky Boss is still not in.

Looks like the episode is fun today. Seeing them do couple stuff together made me happy. The beach scenes were lovely. That ring is definitely not a good sign base on the preview for episode 10. Break up already. That was quick huhuhu!

I like that last scene because it was just a simple room, no grand things. They looked like they got married because of what their wearing and they sealed it with a kiss 🙂

OT – why is it always dark when WH and YJ’s Dad meets? Just noticed it even from before.

  2. You got this one down pat, “Think of this as a pictorial essay. It’s like me looking at a Lascaux cave paintings and saying, “Ooh! That’s a lone bull vs a stampeding herd of cattle.”

What is M M? I think it is only M&M hehehe

By the way, I like her pj’s when she was eating the food from WH 🙂

  3. I checked the bowls again: one contained rice and the other contained soup. They were both for “M”.

But remember what the mom said to him in Episode 7? She told him, “Give my place to the person you love from now on.”

  4. Yes. The PJs had prints of a Scottish terrier! Cute!

  5. It’s probably dark when WH and YJ’s Dad meet because he meets him after his office hours … and because there’s no other customer inside the restaurant but him (dad saving money?? lol)

I was in Seoul last year for business but my husband joined me towards the latter half of the trip. One evening we decided to skip the “company dinner” and went off by ourselves. We ate in this grilled barbecue place and had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Wow! The waiter attended to us better than the servers of the 5 star hotel. He was eager to teach us how to eat Korean food that he was practically wrapping the pork belly (or samgyeopsal) in lettuce wraps for my husband. lol. He made us try the different sauces and explained to us in basic English what the side dishes were. He was one of the highlights of the trip for my husband, that’s for sure.

YJ’s dad reminded me of that waiter. They both take delight in FEEDING people as opposed to just SERVING food.

  6. Yes I remember that but at that time there’s M and S. Now it’s 2 M.

I’m trying hard to think of something to match that M but I can’t 😂

OT- don’t like chicken feet? 😉 Me and my boy’s do.

  7. No. I don’t like chicken feet. I shudder at the thought of putting feet in my mouth. I remember my friends at soompi posting chicken feet just to gross me out. I also don’t like pork hocks and beef tongue (feels like I’m french kissing a cow). lol.

I had a steamed shrimp ball, a couple of pork dumplings, one fried crab ball, a couple slices of crispy pork, duck in spring rolls, and clams. I’m bad, I didn’t even have veggies. I was too full for the string beans.

Same here. I’ve been racking my brains for a term of endearment in English that starts with M. 🙁

  8. Halo @packmule3.
I love your recap. This episode so sweet that I couldn’t stop smiling on this episode. It’s give me so much butterflies in my stomach.
Could you do an intense opinion or response for their beach date and kissing scene. I just love it to the bone. Also I love the background song that they played for the two of them dancing/swaying. It just a romantic and lovely date, that everyone dream of. The song match up with everything that night. I guess it great you do breakdown the scene for us.

  9. Wow! I would like to experience that too. That’s like a tour in itself except it’s with food and the service is more than 5 star! 🙂 My parents and 2 sisters have been in Seoul already but not me and my other sister. It is one of my dreams so hopefully one day it will come true. I guess the main reason I can’t go yet is because I am not into spicy food 😟 I have to learn and adjust to it 🙂

All of my family eats chicken feet. We love beef tongue too. Mom makes the best tomato base sauce for it and it’s really yummy. Either that or with mushroom base sauce.

Your dinner was yummy. I had Pho` Beef Noodles for lunch with the Boss 🙂

True about YJ’s Dad saving money hehehe

I wonder what YJ was crying about in the preview.

  10. @packmule3—Thank you for another delightful spoiler, through the lens of Lascaux cave art.

    Random thoughts:

I’m beginning to question the wisdom of watching this show live. Why am I doing this to myself? Of course I absolutely love @packmule3’s analysis and the ensuing discussions here and elsewhere but … the anxiety I have after the Thursday episodes is ridiculous.

A couple weeks ago on Dramabeans, I pondered the notion that my affection for this OTP felt more visceral because I was equally charmed by the male and female protagonists. Yesterday, I was exploring the viewer’s role in projecting desire and I found a 2016 Guardian article about “The sizzling secrets of on-screen chemistry: from Dirty Dancing to La La Land.” It’s great article by Pamela Stephenson Connolly and I recommend reading it. This section elicited a “Ha!” from me:

The truth is, each audience member projects their own, particular, deep-seated longing, lust, and love-aspirations on to whichever couple displays the right character, appearance, behaviour, situation, and relating style for their individual tastes. They are part of a three-way relationship: in a triangle with the two actors.

More randomness: Actor Chun Jung-Myung’s costumes hide his jacked physique. Ep. 9’s wetsuit, his calves, and knit tops hinted more strongly at his jujitsu-trained body. I’m not asking for a shower topless scene but, my God, he was in the ocean! That’s an opportunity of water droplets to do their thing.

Also, while neither lover has explicitly declared saranghae to the other, I adore how each party expresses their love in their own way. Please let us count the ways in another post.

I grinned non-stop at their beach escapades. It was sweetness personified, even it all turns to sh** tomorrow. Because rings.

  11. Yes! It was like a “tour” you signed up for. The waiter did everything for us, like cutting the pork belly into strips, even putting the little garlic on top of the meat in the wrap.

My husband didn’t want to try the perilla leaf. He only wanted the lettuce as a wrap. But the waiter convinced him to try it. He said the meat was wrapped like that because it was a gift. And the perilla was more expensive gift-wrapping paper. At least, that’s how I UNDERSTOOD his explanation and my Korean is pretty limited.😂 Anyway, I was glad the waiter convinced him to try it.

I had so much fun at that dinner, it was like a honeymoon. 😂 You know how when you go on your honeymoon, everything you do together is such a novelty? It felt like that: surreal. It felt like time stopped and you were living in the moment.

  12. I ignored the preview at the end.

After my excitement and my fan-applause of the ring exchange, I sensed that there was no way to go but downhill after this episode.

There are only two ways left to break them up: his connection with Choego or his connection with her dad. We just have to pick which poison ☠️ to start with. And if that doesn’t kill their relationship, then the second one will. 😂

Re. that article, I’m NOT in a three-way relationship. 😈 I’m always in a FOURsome, even a quintuple relationship. 😂😂

I’m counting the two leads, me AND the writer… and the director sometimes. I told people at soompi a long time ago that I ship scripts, not the couple. For me, the script has to FIRST make sense before I can fall in love with the leading characters.

The story may have a sweet couple with good chemistry between actors, but if I can’t make sense of the script (cough: “Where Stars Land”) or I can’t agree with the premise of the script (i.e., “Beauty Within” and “Are You a Robot Too”), then it’s a No-Go zone for me. The OTPs are secondary to the script. 🙂

The beach scenes were lovely, weren’t they? I noticed however that the surf board was conveniently covering the actor’s pelvic region. 😂 But not YEH’s.

  13. 🙂 Ok. I’ll do the reviews on Friday. I think we might need them after we get their “break-up” scenes tomorrow. I read that YJ was crying at the beach cottage so WH must have revealed something to her that upset her. Hopefully, their separation won’t last long.

  14. 😀😀😀

  15. @tsutsuloo Thanks for bringing that part of the article and making me realise that I’m usually in a three some when I watch a kdrama and I love the OTP 😂 So that’s what it is. 😬

I remember watching the ending of a series a million times because I really really like the OTP. Lucky I got over it. It was crazy 😂

    My random thoughts:

1- When WH said to WW “ Whether I tell the world or the woman I LOVE, it’s mine to tell. I won’t let anyone else say it.” No wonder WW was teary. That was already a slap on her face.

2- WH said to Unnie, “I don’t care about what I have to give up or what price I have to pay.”

I couldn’t agree more to what you said about our couple expressing their love in their own sweet way even without saying saranghae. I can just watch them all day, if only I can. ☺️

  16. Re. your #2

YJ to Unnie, “I’m happy when I’m with Cha WooHyun. No matter what ends up happening to me because of Cha WooHyun, whatever else I lose —If I’m fine, then will you give up (i.e., managing her, leading company, doing her job)?

Unnie asked, “What are you imagining? How much do you think you’re going to lose? Will you be okay not being able to act for the rest of your life? Doing things for money (meaning, be forced to do work because she had no choice but to take money) and not being able to do things you like, and having the rest of your life doing what others tell you? Will that be okay?”

    And YH was confused.

So now, we have THAT. In Unnie’s eyes, the way to be independent is to to have control; to be financially stable, so YH can pick and choose the projects she wants.

THAT is different from WH’s mindset. To be independent of others like his father, he just cuts them out and minds his own business. He controls his own reaction but he doesn’t seek to control others interfering with him.

He just tells them off (like with Wannabe Wife and mother) and he threatens (like with father) but he does NOT do anything to make them stop.

And this kind of passivity will have to change when he needs to protect YooJung. He’ll actually have to do something a bit more drastic and confrontational to make his dad and Wannabe Wife stop plotting. So far, he’s asked his “proxy” — his stepmom — do the dirty fighting for him.

  17. Agree! He hasn’t done anything except threatening and ask StepMom for help. His Dad has all the card to make YJ lose everything with that contract. Though WH asked YJ’s Dad to testify on that fire incident in the teaser. Looks like he will use that against his own Father but revealing at the same time about YJ’s Dad to her.

I think WH will tell YJ about his Dad but at the same time WW will release that article about the engagement.

I know the angst is coming but I really want more fluttering moments before our couple breaks up.

Did you see how comfortable their holding hands were right after YJ gave him their rings? And on top of WH’s thigh? 😍

WH said he will treat YJ as a Queen right? I have high expectations on this! They better deliver 😁

I wish I can watch it live but it’s 11:42pm here and it will start at 1am my time. 😩

  18. Awww! I want to experience a surreal dinner date like yours too. I hope Hubby and I can have it one day ☺️

    I’ll sign off now. Enjoy!

    Laters! 😘

  19. Good night then. I’ll try to a “madcap” for you, then.
I didn’t watch the preview so I wouldn’t be anxious about today’s show. I always imagine the worst scenario so I’m always relieved whenever the writer doesn’t do it my way.

lol. Is Wannabe really going to release a press announcement. I’m already feeling vicarious embarrassment for her.

We had tons of fluttering moments in the last quarter of the episode yesterday. I’ll replay that if nothing happened tonight.

Yes, I saw the holding hands. Oooohhh. If @jemrie made a gif of it, I’ll sneak into soompi later and “steal” it too. hahaha.

  20. The other nice thing was we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. It’s “nice” because it felt like we rented the place for a romantic moment. But I’m sure it wasn’t “nice” for the business.

I was sad when we visited the place again to have our last dinner in Seoul and found it close. 🙁 On a Friday night, too!

    Goodnight!

  21. Howdy! Good afternoon? ☺️

Oh it was close on a Friday night? I hope it wasn’t permanently close ☹️

Yes please ‘steal’ the gif of Milk Couple holding hands 😍

  22. Hi @packmule3 (:
Been lurking around for some time, and really enjoyed your wit and snarkiness, and your concise and on-the-point analyses. You made me laugh with your persistent Lauscaux metaphor in this post xD

Anyway, just popping by to share this video: https://youtu.be/ZSd2cQw9Bog

Chanced by it, and apparently the actor, Chun Jung-myung, ‘s hobby is surfing. He shares a rather shocking experience he had with surfing here. But yeah, it’s cool because you mentioned that the things Yoo-jung were doing in this drama felt like a homage to Yoon Eun-hye, and it’s cool to think that maybe that surfing scene was more real-life like too, with him actually sharing his hobby with her (:

(PS: I used to never be able to stomach chicken feet too. But one day suddenly I gave them a try somehow, and have been hooked ever since.)

Thanks for the recap of this ep!!

  23. The episode ending kiss tells me that they definitely kissed at the end of ep 6. There were no shyness, that usually happens… Esp in WH’s part…

    He just went for it.

  24. @packmule 3, ep 10 shows CJM’s lower area in the wetsuit.
