Throwback Thursday: The Meaning of Cemeteries in “Goblin”

While waiting for subs, let me resurrect an old post from soompi. My good friend @nearsea (Yes, I do have lot of friends at soompi but zero followers) asked me:

Wow the last line, never thought of it before, yes now that we think about it, this does seem to be something profound, [or was meant to leave an impact in our mind ] that Shin would wait in the graveyard to meet ET again. Of all places why the graveyard? Because that’s where the body’s last sign remains right? Heheh. [ DNA and all]. So in that sense we could infer that the one who came back was ET indeed. What do you think @packmule3?

And this was my response, dated Feb 6, 2017.

As for why the reunion had to occur at the graveyard, @nearsea, I have an explanation for that, too, and I’m sorry for making you wait. You always asked good questions and I’m always pressed for time to answer you well. No, it had nothing to do with DNA. Hahaha. Nice try, though.

That place was originally a sad reminder to Shin of all the people he had buried, right? That was why he didn’t stay in Quebec for long. He only came and he went. He was transient.

But after ET’s appearance in his life, it became a place where death was conquered TWICE.  First time around was when he died and she couldn’t remember their past lives together. She went back to Quebec to seek answers and she regained her memories. They had their real honeymoon in Quebec. (And yes, they did make love then, catwhiskers. You gals are so funny. That part wasn’t ambiguous at all.)

Second time was this moment in time. Shin had finally taken up residence in Quebec. He hired a staff to look after him, and he had a picture of the chateau, similar to the one he had of the mansion in Seoul.  She died but he was waiting for her there because she promised to come back looking for him. She died, and yet in a DEEPER sense, she didn’t really die, because she continued to live on in his memories, and in his heart.

That’s the significance of the whole motto, je me souviens (translation: I remember. It’s the motto of Quebec, Canada.) To live in the remembrance of those left behind – in the hearts of those who remember — is to keep on living forever.

And at this very cemetery, the whole theme of “eternal” love comes full circle here, too. It’s beautifully ironic when you think about it, nearsea.

Despite the burden of this sad love, Goblin would wait for her because she had promised to return and live the rest of her afterlife with him.  (lol. Remember she made a bet with him that sad love existed and that HE would wait? She won that bet.)  He waited for her arrival there because that was the place she had first joked that she was to be the goblin’s bride in 200 years.  He denied it THAT time.  I thought he was being mean when he said, “no.”

What he meant was she wasn’t going to be his bride “in about 200 years or so” because she WAS his bride…right there and then. It’s all about semantics.

BTW, ET sniffed after he rejected her. lol. Didn’t I tell you to watch out for her sniffing? To me, every time she sniffed, it meant skepticism, like she was saying “I don’t believe you” or “Hmmph. If you say so.” Or “Let’s see about that.”  Thank goodness though that she eventually figured out that Shin’s “no” meant something else.

She said it here:

In hindsight, I think she misunderstood his meaning here in Episode 2.  She wouldn’t have understood the concept of immortality, anyway; it was simply beyond her comprehension. He wasn’t rejecting that she was HIS bride but he was contesting the years. She wasn’t going to be the bride in 200 years because she had always been the bride from the beginning, from the get-go.

From Episode 4. He tried to tell her — but he didn’t sound credible because he was medicated.

But when he told her that he had been waiting for her, she shushed him.

Then, he tried to tell her again in Episode 5 that she’d been the bride, far longer than 200 years.

Before he died, his last words were that she was his bride and he loved her even before she knew.

She was the bride first and last.

So do you understand now, nearsea, why they their reunion was at the cemetery

For me, the answer is simple: they both died already. At one point during their lifetime, they died. In fact, he died twice already. He was resurrected from his second death when she summoned him from that frozen tundra of death. Now, it was his turn to wait for her to be reborn after she was killed by the truck of doom.

So when you reflect upon it, both ET and Shin should have been laid to rest, and buried too in that cemetery in Quebec. But they were standing there in the midst of gravestones because they survived even death. They both lived on. Their eternal love for each other conquered death.
