Fluttering Alert: Homage to YEH

On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me…
Six references to Yoon Eun Hye’s real life
Five words to text (“Merry Christmas, I love you”)
Four gifs of WH (and four of YJ, too)
Three parents-in-law
Two texting couple
And a fluttering love story.

I spotted at least six times when the character YooJung resembled the actor Yoon Eun Hye. Her fans could easily identify more.

1. the fashion plagiarism scandal

What happened was unfortunate. To me however, the netizens aggravated the situation and appeared hell-bent on smearing her character. They ignored her credible explanation of the accusation of plagiarism, and instead nitpicked the last sentence of the last paragraph of her open letter.

In typical vindictive fashion, they used the “Don’t use my name Yoon Eun Hye” as punchline.

This was YEH’s letter.

“First, I’d like to apologize for worrying the many fans in Korea and China. This is my stance on accusations that the outfit in the 4th episode of ‘The Goddess’ Fashion’ is similar to designer Yoon Choon Ho’s outfit.
‘The Goddess’ Fashion’ is a reality program where the ‘goddess’ and the designer becomes a team. A total of 5 teams make about 20 outfits that fit the mission per week and get judged on by buyers. We have to make about 20 patterns, finished outfits, and accessories, within a week.
Every week, I go through a process for inspiration to prepare the collection. We have to fit the topic, and we have to engage with one movie per episode. The concept for the 4th episode was ‘the great nature,’ and our team’s sub-topic was ‘snow’ and ‘lion’.
The movie we chose was ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’. To express the white snow and lion in the movie, I used all white for the outfit color and took motivation from the lion’s mane for the frills.
To fill the lacking parts in a short time, we’re always investigating and studying to get better every episode. We’ve been studying from a very long time ago until now to gain the basic information of design and have been studying design and preparing clothes.
This is why we researched brands that have used lace and frills, which has been loved since 2000. We researched frills that have been loved for 10 years by referencing the well-loved frill style’s representative brands of Viktor & Rolf, Isabel Marant, the 2014 S/S Lanvin, and Dries van Noten.
Finally, I got an idea from the 2008 Viktor & Rolf’s trend from 10 years ago and the 2014 S/S Lanvin collection that could express the lion. Looking at a feather decoration from the arm of an outfit, we made the coat’s arms into a lovely frill. We did not plagiarize designer Yoon Choon Ho’s outfit and we have no reason to.
The shape and placement of the frills on the arms are by combining the popular trend. Because the place of the frills on the arms and the white color are similar from designer Yoon Choon Ho’s outfit, we think it must have looked even more similar.
Even more flustering from our point of view is why he never contacted the label and never contacted the stylist. He expressed his opinions in a one-sided manner on SNS and we’re sad about his words that read, ‘A few days ago, the actress and her stylist borrowed this from me with my support. Now they’re saying they both made it. I got goosebumps.’
We’ve sponsored other clothes by designer Yoon Choon Ho before, but because it’s still summer, we have not received the 2015 F/W clothes. It isn’t true that the stylist picked that outfit up, and we did not use it after getting sponsored. Because this is recorded in the brand sponsoring, you can confirm this fact.
Lastly, I’m disappointed that he brought up a plagiarism controversy through SNS without thoroughly confirming information. We hope that you do not use Yoon Eun Hye’s name to promote your brand from now on before the release of your collection.”

This was how the romcom addressed it. From Episode 1 —

See that? The writer didn’t shy away from making a direct reference to the “Don’t use my name Yoon Eun Hye” catchphrase. lol.

I wouldn’t be surprised if YEH showed magnanimity and offered this designer (what’s HIS name again?) a second chance just like her character YooJung gave her nasty ex-BF a helping hand in his floundering career.

2. Her tomboyish nature

It wasn’t only GongYoo’s character in Coffee Prince who fell in love with a tomboy version of Yoon EunHye. So did her BFF in this romcom.

There’s something cute about YEH when she portrays a character that can play rough and physical games with the guys.

It’s interesting that WooHyun never saw her as a tomboy. He saw her as a woman.

3. Painting

Thank to @curiousyeh for this soompi article.

4. Knitting

She made a maroon scarf for her dad, a red one for herself and a blue one for her love.

Thanks to @lonetwilight (was it you who brought it up?) who mentioned that YEH knits in real life.

I also found out that she directed a 12-minute movie on a woman knitting a scarf.

The story is simple: a young woman is in the process of moving out and boxing her things. She spots her unfinished scarf. She proceeds to finish knitting it. She’s interrupted by a phonecall from girlfriend crying about a break-up. When she walks back to the room, she discovers that she’s accidentally unraveled the scarf. The ending scene shows her boxing her stuff. The scarf has been knitted again.

I think to YEH, knitting is an activity that soothes and comforts her. There’s a calming rhythmic motion in weaving thread and needle together.

But knitting can also mean cherishing another person. You see, the end result of knitting project is always a unique and personal creation that envelops the body in warmth: like a scarf, a bonnet, a blanket.

5. Cooking food

YEH likes to cook.

I found this on twitter.

6. Her future in the entertainment industry

This observation from her Unnie seems to convey a certain truth about YEH’s career.

“Even the brightest stars lose their shine eventually, but they have to be even more beautiful when they go out to remain in people’s lives. If they just fall suddenly, they become pitiful. I can’t watch you end like that.”

She wants to be remembered not for the illusions — and delusions — made by her kdrama hits but for the real proof and testimony of the good life she’s tried to live off-camera. 🙂

  1. Thank you, I really love what you wrote about Eun Hye Yoon, she is a very talented person and, as my mother would say with many gifts, you know she won a prize for her short film. By the way, happy new year 2019, for everyone.

  2. I was charmed from the moment I clapped eyes on Yoon Eun Hye in this drama. And now, I admire her as a person. Respect!

  3. I’m sorry,I usually just lurks in this blog of yours, but I feel the need to comment on this specific post. I like how you connect some scenes or script on YEH’s real life.I did notice also those things and some more while watching the drama and can’t help but think she picked this over other scripts because of the similarities in her personal life.
In the end, just like those words in number 6,I hope she’ll have a graceful exit, fitted to her personality and her name, once she decided to focus on other things.Building her own family, perhaps.

P.S. Another hit or critically acclaimed drama(or both), will not hurt. She’s my(our) Drama Queen,in the first place.
    Keep fighting,unnie!!!

  4. Thank you so much for writing this article about her on your personal blog Pacmule. Not every bloggers appreciated her the way you do especially after the so called “scandal”.
And no, I’m not the one who mentioned her skill in knitting.
But yeah it’s inspired her to make her first short movie as one of her study assignment.
Her second short movie is titled “Red Eye”. Both have been screened at Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
You mentioned about her (possible) magnanimity to the designer. Funny thing is, that designer still blame YEH and even going far by making collaboration with YEH rival. It seems (to me) he still hold a grudge to her…
It’s not the first time that her magnanimity is misconstrued by people. Her collaboration with actor Park Shi Hoo (unreleased movie : Love After Love) gave her a bad image instead and got her more hates.
Seriously, I don’t know what’s up with Korean netz/viewers for hating her so much. Sorry for ranting.
I think YEH has learned from all of this experiences which affected her decision in navigating her career in the future. Her career might not be as it used to be but she looks more happier now.
