The King: Ep 12 On Lady Noh’s Mysterious Beginnings

So Lady Noh is Korean?

That’s it??!!

Not Impressed Ru Paul GIF by RuPaul's Drag Race - Find & Share on ...

To be honest, I was underwhelmed by that news. I thought she was the original Time Traveler or the Fairy Godmother for Lee Gon, like Fate/Yoyo Girl was at TaeEul’s side. So, when I consider the more exciting identities for Lady Noh, finding out that she was North Korean is anticlimactic.

Besides, in my mind, ALL North Koreans should gaze at girls like Hyun Bin from “Crash Landing on You,”

With that sexy, smoldering, steely-eyed glint.

And not like this,

like she was peering at you through her eye cataracts. Do you see what I mean?

So, that whole North Korean revelation? It was a meh.

From the start, I found her dubious.  Here’s the link that post: Old Court Lady

She appeared to know more than she was letting on. And she was the one with the “plan.”

The Dark Knight - It's All Part Of The Plan GIF by MikeyMo | Gfycat

1. First on her agenda: to find the Unbreakable Sword

At the funeral, she encouraged young LG and Young to develop a friendship. She said it was part of a PLAN.

JY Father: He’s not moving an inch.
Lady Noh: Right.
JY Father: He shouldn’t talk to the King like that.
Lady Noh: It’s all part of a plan … Just wait and see.

That’s when I suspected that her words had a double meaning. When she said that there was a “plan,” any regular viewer would assume that she was merely talking about the mental health of the young King. He needed a companion with him through the rough times, and Young looked like he could be trained to become his loyal sidekick, like Robin was to Batman.

But I assumed that Lady Noh was speaking of a more divine plan… like Lee Gon’s FATE. There was a master plan going on, and although she wasn’t as omniscient and all-knowing like Yoyo Girl/Fate towards TaeEul, she was doing her part to help Lee Gon.

She was helping him by putting the right people in the right place to help Lee Gon.

2. Next on her agenda: to find the Queen

She’d been putting talismans all around his bedroom, but she hated the Prime Minister Koo. She called her a “bitch.” (Grrr…Why do all bitches get a bad rap because of the wickedness of a few?)

Good Bitch GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

On one hand, her hostility towards PM could be due to a) discrimination because Koo’s a fishmonger’s daughter and a divorcee, and b) Koo’s political ambitions. But on the other hand, I thought her visceral contempt for Koo could be based on her encounters with Koo from a previous lifetime.

She had a specific Queen that she was looking for.

And that’s why, to me, she was desperate to marry Lee Gon off. Ostensibly, she was worried about the succession. Lee Gon needed to continue the bloodline. However, if we were to put a different spin to it, she wanted Lee Gon married because he needed a Queen by his side in his quest for his destiny…or the “plan.”

That’s why, to me,  she didn’t panic when she realized that LG went missing to chase after a strange woman who was herself chased by gangsters. Given her wariness, she should have been appalled that LG was consorting with a hoodlum. Instead, she unfazed.

And to top that, she implied that she would have to bow before shaman who gave her the talismans … because the talismans worked. Ha!

Lady Noh: Did you investigate the assailants from the rowing competition?
JY: Yes, but they seem irrelevant to His Majesty’s absence. I found one lead though. It’s the woman who caused the incident. It seems that His Majesty was after that woman as well.
Lady Noh: His Majesty was after whom? A woman?
JY: It’s just my suspicion. I’ll let you know when I find concrete evidence.
Lady Noh: Make sure to make a thorough investigation.
JY: Yes, ma’am.
Lady Noh: The talismans haven’t been working, so I was just about to go and grab the shaman by the hair. I might end up bowing to her to show my appreciation.

Didn’t you see that her last comment was a very odd thing for her to say? That meant she was fine with Lee Gon chasing this “woman who caused the incident.” In fact, she might have to bow to the shaman to show appreciation because the talismans were effective in helping Lee Gon find his future Queen.

To me, Lady Noh often gives these “zingers” or “last words” that should make audience do a double-take.

Take for instance when she ordered Yeong to do a search on TaeEul.

Earlier, she looked at TaeEul’s ID that Lee Gon hid in his “Alice in Wonderland” book. (How did she know where he hid it?) And she asked Yeong to look into it.

Noh: Find out everything you can about her. And of course, this is a secret.
JY: Isn’t she the woman from the ID card His Majesty had?
Noh: How do you know that?
JY: I already investigated her three years ago under His Majesty’s orders. I looked through all database, but such a person didn’t exist. And as you would’ve seen, the issue date is strange, too. It could be fake.
Noh: I’m getting a headache. And it breaks my heart. I told him not to, but I guess he never gave up. The woman he was chasing, could it have been this woman? How could there be nothing? There aren’t any immigration records, either.
JY: Don’t worry. That woman isn’t His Majesty’s style. She won’t get even get along well with him. You can tell she’s not a science person.

Noh: And you, do you know what your style is?

See that? Until her last comment, there was nothing exceptional about what she Yeong. It was natural for her to be suspicious of this girl. However, her parting shot should make us think. What did she mean by that?

On one level, she meant to silence Yeong from speculating about Lee Gon’s taste in women. Her comment was a put-down, because she probably knew that Yeong was fighting against his own attraction for his fangirl writer or this “girl in the crowd.” She wasn’t his style either.

But on another level, she could have been protecting Lee Gon’s future Queen and rebuffing Yeong’s disdain towards non-science people precisely because TaeEul was indeed a skeptic, a flat-earther.

Do you see what I mean? Lady Noh was cryptic. And her last words are usually the give-aways.

3. Third on her agenda: to introduce Maximus to Lee Gon and to return the whip and the ID

Three important things from this scene:

One, Lady Noh “handed” everything over to Lee Gon on the same day. Did you notice that?

Lady Noh and Lee Gon were at the racetrack to look at Maximus. Then she returned the flute, hidden in the riding crop, and TaeEul’s ID to him. To me, it was as if she was giving him the horse, and the riding crop so he could go find the girl in the ID. They all went together: riding crop + horse = TaeEul

Two, Lady Noh talked about the horse being born on the same night as the tragedy. Since we now know about the importance of “Fate” in this kdrama, I can assume that Lady Noh was talking about balance. That is, on the night of the White King’s death (he was wearing white), an auspicious birth of a white foal happened. Similarly, on the night when Lee Gon felt that he was alone after his father’s funeral, JY became his friend. There’s balance.

Three, throughout their conversation, Lady Noh was side-eyeing Lee Gon to gauge his reaction.

Noh: Even on a night like that, a baby is born. Isn’t it great?
LG: That night, I heard the sound of a flute. Do you think it was the sound of the Manpasikjeok?
Noh: No way. The Manpansikjeok doesn’t many sound, Your Majesty.
LG: That’s not true. I definitely heard it. (she looked worried) That’s why I went to Cheojongo. I couldn’t hear anything because the flute was so loud. I couldn’t hear the gunfire.
Noh: (sigh) I didn’t know you remembered everything because you never mentioned what happened that day.
LG: I held onto two things that night. I’m asking if one of them is in the whip you are holding. (pause) Also whether or not you have the other one. (meaning the ID)
Noh: (closing eyes and nodding) That’s right. I’ve been keeping it secret. And I brought it to give it back to you despite my fear. What an odd thing it is. Something that is silent yet makes a sound. And something that cannot be identified yet exists. Which is why I wish you’d forgotten everything.
LG: Is this a secret between us?
Noh: Yes, Your Majesty.
LG: Do you think it’s here? The secret why I survived that day.

It was clear to me that Lady Noh brought him to the racetrack to determine whether he was ready to be given back the two items. It didn’t seem accidental that they were watching the foal run free. She had this moment planned. All three, the horse, the riding crop, and TaeEul were linked.

Maximus PLUS

flute, hidden in the crop, and TaeEul’s ID are interconnected and part of the “plan.”

Just like she found him his Unbreakable Sword,

she was now handing over the things that were rightfully his. Despite her fear and anxiety for his future, she was giving him the things he needed in his quest for his destiny. She had only safe-guarded them until it was time for him to get them — unlike Prince Buyeong who kept the King’s ring…

Then, LG asked her if this was intended to be a secret between them. And she said, “Yes.” To me, they entered in a secret bond here.

Although we don’t know what this master plan is, he was agreeing to this quest that was given to him, that is, to find the reason he survived that day.

And I wrote about it:

Thus, just like with a) her plan to make JY the best friend of LG, and b) her plan to marry LG off to the “right/wrong” Queen, the Old Court Lady also planned to return the flute and the ID back to him. That’s why I grew suspicious of her. She was like a fairy godmother preparing LG to fight a battle.

Now, her actions only made sense if she knew or had a foresight of what was going to happen in the future to Lee Gon. She wouldn’t be planning and laying the groundwork if she didn’t expect something big and catastrophic would happen to LG in the future.

link: Old Court Lady

That’s why I thought she was a time-traveler or a “fairy godmother.” If TaeEul had this child as an ally,

then Lee Gon had this granny.

So, this revelation that she’s a Korean expat is quite a downer to me.

4. Next, on Lady Noh’s agenda: to hire a storyteller

Lady Noh hired SeungAh to work at the Royal Press Office to – take a load of this – to create fake news.

SeungAh and her team were in charge of calming down the public with fake news.

I already mentioned to you that the hiring procedure was suspicious. I thought Lady Noh had another plan in mind for Songah. Why?

Because she had kept an eye on Songah for four years, and because she liked her “ability to create something from nothing.”

In Justin Beiber’s words, “What do you mean?”

What Do You Mean GIF by Justin Bieber - Find & Share on GIPHY

From Episode 3, as 12:42.

Noh: Your resume states that your family is living in Canada right now. Is your family wealthy.
SongAh: Pardon? Oh..well.. we don’t have any financial trouble.
Noh: Then you won’t do anything stupid over money.

Again, you can interpret this into ways. On the surface, it made sense that Lady Noh wouldn’t hire anybody that could be bribed. That’s just common sense hiring practice. But on another level, Lady Noh chose employees who couldn’t be targeted by Lee Lim. Lee Lim, on the other hand, picked workers who were poor, marginalized, and bore grudges. Lee Lim preyed on these women and used their negative emotions.

Noh: Do you have any friends?
SongAh: It hasn’t been long since I came from Canada. I only have one childhood friend that I meet often.
Noh: Then, you’re forced to be reticent.

Lady Noh meant that Songhwa could be trusted to keep secrets because SongAh lived an isolated life and because she’s naturally reserved.

Noh: The reason why I’m hiring you is —
SongAh: What?
Noh: You’ve applied for four years, and I’ve watched you for four years.

Interesting fact. Three years ago, Lee Gon was checking on the autopsy of Lee Lim (right? I need to look this up) AND checking on TaeEul.

SongAh: You’ve been watching me? How?
Noh: Nickname Jogon Jogon.

Oli told me that JoGon is a combination of two words: Jo for Jo Young and Gon for Lee Gon. She was writing a fanfic on Yeong and Lee Gon, or “JoGon.” Thanks for pointing that out, Oli!

However, I’ll insist that there’s another wordplay here. It’s an onomatopoeia for the sound of a heartbeat. In Korean, “thumpity-thump” is “dugeon dugeon.” These two men Jo Young and Lee Gon certainly have great visuals together. They’re like twin Adonis. So, when they’re seen together, their brotherhood aka “JoGon” makes the hearts all girls beat faster “Jogon Jogon.”

So Lady Noh was right. In contrast to Yeong’s very rigid personality, Songah was very creative. She can take an ordinary wordplay and twist it into homophonic pun. And according to Lady Noh, this creativity of Songah is a much-admired quality. To me, Lady Noh searched her out precisely for this personality trait. If ever something unnatural, supernatural or fantastic occurred, SongAh wouldn’t be fazed or disconcerted because she’s used to concocting a fantasy world.

Noh: I’ve enjoyed your fanfics. I was happy living in the world you created. I appreciate your ability to create something from nothing. So I’ll give you an important job. Are you familiar with After Effects and Photoshop?
SongAh: Wow. Daebak.
Noh: I got a spot for you at the Royal Public Affairs Office. I want you to just write like you used to. Please write beautiful stories and touching hashtags.

See there she goes again. “It’s part of the plan.” “Yes, Your Majesty, this is a secret between us.” and “Please write beautiful stories and touching hashtags.”

Note: Being an eternally optimistic person (ha!), I interpreted Lady Noh’s last words as a sign that this kdrama will end happily.

5. Next on the plan: to discover the portal

She knew that Lee Gon discovered the portal and crossed over when she saw this book.

According to wikipedia, Kim SoWol died in 1934 at the age of 32. He was born in Lady Noh’s northern region of Korea. His book of poetry, Azaleas was published in 1925, and his mentor published selected poetry posthumously in 1935.

Lady Noh was born in 1932. She left northern Korea when she was 17, (or 16 by international age) or in 1948. She last heard about her hometown 67 years ago or in 1953. To me, that meant she was in the southern region of Korea from 1948 to 1953. Then she asked TaeEul what happened to the war that broke out in 1950.

That war ended 67 years ago as well, in 1953. This means she left the southern region of Korea shortly before the war ended in July 1953 and ended up in the parallel universe of the Kingdom of Corea.

Or — lol — she could be dead, too, and this is just her psychic dead spirit we’re seeing here. Who knows. lol.

Anyway, after Lady Noh had given Lee Gon the essential “tools” for the quest, the discovery of the portal was the next important step, and Lee Gon did it.

Now, I find it interesting that three poems she selected from the book were all about longing. The poem is yearning for a dead beloved, a traveler who’s gone to a distant place, and a lover who’s been gone for a very long time.

In the “Invocation of the Dead,” the poet/persona refused to say the final goodbye.

Invocation of the Dead

Oh, name shattered.
Oh, name that parted in the air.
Oh, name without an owner.
Oh, name I will call until I die.
I won’t finish the last words
I had in my heart.
The one I loved.
The one I loved.

He was holding on to the dead lover and hoping that she would somehow return from the dead or that he could somehow, in some way, bring her back from the dead.

Same with “My Home.” Lady Noh read an excerpt about a person waiting by the gate for the traveler to come home.

My Home

When the sun goes down over the white rapids,
I shall wait by the gate.
Between the shadows of the birds singing at dawn,
I see the world brightening up in its still calmness.
With my eyes fixated on the traveler passing by
At the break of dawn
I wonder,
Is that you? Is that you?

And we know that TaeEul loved to wait by her big gates for Lee Gon.

The, in the poem, “The Stream,” the poet/persona wonders why she’s been waiting for so long for his return. He promised her that he’d return and so she waits. To give up on waiting means that to give up on hope that he’ll ever return. It means to forget him.

The Stream

What is your reason for doing that?
Sitting alone by the stream.
The green grass was sprouting
and the water was splashing from the spring breeze.

You promised that even if you go,
You won’t be gone forever.
That is what you promised.

I sit by the stream each day
And think about it endlessly:
When you promised that even if you go,
You won’t be gone forever,
Were you asking me not to forget you?

So yes, the poems Lady Noh spoke about longing to be reunited with a loved one. And although the sadness in the poems is undeniable, the poems also express a quiet determination to remain steadfast and hopeful despite all things.

7. Next on the list: to find the enemy

Like in any quests, like in the Arthurian legends, there’s always going to be dragons, bad knights, and evil sorcerers. Prince Buyeong knew that Lee Lim was still alive because he did the autopsy and falsified it. And although Prince Buyeong did NOT tell about the results of the autopsy, I believe Lady Noh knew too.

I’ll tell you why in a bit. 🙂

First, let me get back to Growing_Beautifully’s question. (See I didn’t forget you, GB!) She had asked me what I thought of Prince Buyeong and Lady Noh in Episode 6. This is how I answered.

I fast-forwarded to the scene with Lady Noh and the scene with Prince Buyeong.

They’re lying. I don’t have time to explain so don’t ask me more than what I’ll say right now….

With Lady Noh, LG knew that she was lying. Listen to how he approached her He said, you’ve tasted my phone, you checked my room blahblahblah…then safeguarded the flute for me….

This was the same approach he used when he talked to Prince Buyeong. He didn’t come out ATTACKING. No, he lulled them with his loving memories of the past. He told them how grateful he was to them. Then, after that, he started probing.

He knew that Lady Noh had good intentions for him all along. But just like with Prince Buyeong, he wanted to know if she was hiding something from him.

To me, Lady Noh was lying. First, she couldn’t look at his eyes. Also, she changed her tone; she suddenly spoke to him in formal language, instead of the usual warm and loving way you’d expect when reminiscing of the past. Formal language is often a sign that speech has been rehearsed. 🙂

Then, there’s something else…

As for Prince Buyeong, he admitted that he falsified the report and that he couldn’t comprehend the different physical conditions. However, he omitted things, too. Like, he didn’t tell LG that he and Lady Noh had been in on it together. He also didn’t tell him WHY he hid the truth. When did he think was the appropriate time to tell LG about it? 30 years later? 35 years later? 40 years?

(lol. And why did LG ask for the autopsy report anyway? What made him confirm the report?)

To me, his apology was rehearsed, too. He didn’t show up at the palace grounds right away. He had time to prepare his speech or how much to reveal.

Anyway, got to run. I’ll have to watch the whole thing later.

Now, here’s the my LONG explanation, GB.

Episode 6, 55:00. Lee Gon saw Lady Noh fussing around his bed. I’m sure she had talismans hidden everywhere already.

LG: There you are. I asked you to have dinner with me, but you made me eat alone. Rice with beans, spinach soup, and spinach frittata. You decided on the menu today, didn’t you?

We all know he didn’t like veggies ever since he was a child. But I’d complain too if I were LG. Didn’t he just successfully fend off the Japanese navy? So what’s up with this spinach and beans? The man deserved steak and potatoes, darnit!!

2 Ron Swanson Meat .gifs - Album on Imgur

Noh: I’ve no appetite. They say there’s a thief in the palace but I can’t find that brat. It’s driving me crazy. Anyway, did you finish all the food?
LG: You told me to think of it as medicine.
Noh: When you’re like this, you’re still a baby. I don’t understand how you even go to the battlefield.

There’s actually secret pride in Lady Noh that LG outsmarted the Japanese military. But to her, he’d always be her baby.

Noh: Will you now tell me what you said you would tell me or should I wait?
LG: Did Uncle Buyeong call?
Noh: He came back from the conference. I called him and said you came back to the palace safely. Then he said, “That’s good” and hung up the phone.

Suspicious, right? Prince Buyeong didn’t say anything else. It sounded as Prince Buyeong was preparing his confession. Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s no doubt that he was loyal to Lee Gon to the end. But to me, he was actually tempted by the throne and he fought this temptation hard by being OVERZEALOUS in maintaining a distance between him and the throne. To me, this would explain why he didn’t return the “King’s ring” to Lee Gon as soon as he could. Sure, Lee Lim put the ring on Prince Buyeong’s finger as a message to Lee Gon that he was going after Lee Gon’s loved ones. But there’s also a symbolism there: Prince Buyeong had been conflicted about his role as King-in-waiting, too.

LG: You taste all my food, examine every cloth, and every piece of furniture, and every thing that comes into the palace. And you suspect every person that enters the palace to protect me. You also hid the Manpasikjeok in the whip and protected it. May I ask why?
Noh: Ah. well. It’s just what I had to do, Your Majesty. What the traitor, Lee Lim, tried to steal that night was the Manpasikjoek. So I had to protect it. I had to hide it from him. When Lee Lim’s dead boy was found, the first thing I did was to look for the other half of the Manpasikjeok, but I failed to find it. I heard the corpse was drifting in the sea for quite some time. I told myself that it must have gone back to the Dragon King of the East Sea, just like the myth. And it relieved me.

And THERE you have it, @Growing_Beautifully. She was lying as she said. Can you see why? I know you can. 🙂

Chloë Grace Moretz Posing For a Photoshoot With a Skeptical Eye ...

LG: I’m also relying on a myth. That’s why I’m waiting for Uncle Buyeong.

The myth he was referring to was the myth that Lee Lim died. He was waiting for Prince Buyeong to tell him the truth.

LG: I’m not telling you the stories in detail, not because I want to hide it, but because I don’t know yet. So I want you to find the thief while I look for something else.
Noh: Yes. Your Majesty.

Okay… Do you know how you could tell that Lady Noh was lying?

IKnow You Lie Your Lips Are Movin GIF - IKnowYouLie ...

Just kidding…Lady Noh is one of the good guys. 🙂

Seriously now —

According to Lady Noh, she protected Lee Gon and his half of the flute because Traitor Lim tried to kill him and steal the whip. Right? And then, Traitor Lee Lim’s corpse washed up! He’s dead!

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead GIFs | Tenor

Also, she couldn’t find Lee Lim’s half of the flute! It must have fallen into sea and returned to the Dragon King of the East. That’s what she said, right?

Now, if she actually believed that the threat was all gone because Lee Lim is dead, and the flute is gone along with him, then why does she still —

taste all his food,
examine every cloth, and every piece of furniture,
and every thing that comes into the palace.
And you suspect every person that enters the palace to protect Lee Gon?

It doesn’t make sense.

If she actually believed that Lee Lim is dead, then she should be RELIEVED as she said that Lee Gon was no longer in danger. The fact that Lady Noh was still ever so-vigilant meant she believed (although she had no proof like Prince Buyeong) that the traitor Lee Lim was still alive.

🙂

Lee Gon understood then that Lady Noh was shouldering  great burden all by herself, out of great love for him.

And that’s why I said she was lying. But she was lying out of love.

8. And the funny thing about Lady Noh is that the more twisted the story becomes, the calmer she is. Did you notice that?

For instance, in Episode 9 (31:00), that night when Lee Gon realized that he had Lee Lim’s men had already infiltrated TaeEul’s world and he brought home one of LL’s henchmen, Lady Noh knew that Lee Gon was returning home.

She ordered Mr. Seok to “head to the bamboo forest near the racetracks right now. His Majesty will be waiting for you there. Take only a few guards, and don’t get curious about anything. Don’t ask any questions. It’s the King’s order.”

How did she know that LG was showing up at the bamboo grove at that time?

I have four theories:

a. LG left a schedule with Lady Noh and told her something like “have the guards waiting in the bamboo forest at 11pm on Thursday, December 27.”
b. He had a special Samsung that can operate in both worlds.
c. She’s telepathic and knew that LG was coming.
d. She’s a fairy godmother who’s lived through this time before.

Moreover when he arrived at the palace, she was sewing calmly.

BTW, can anybody tell me what “Cha-ne” means? Lee Gon often beginning his greetings to TaeEul, and now Lady Noh, with “chane.” For now, I’m assuming it’s an informal pronoun “you.”

**Updated to add this from Flying_Tool. Thanks, Flying_Tool!

자네 Is a more erudite, mannered, adult form of you.

LG: Did you even know that I came back? Your king has returned to the palace, but you didn’t come to see me once.
Noh: Well, you left without seeing me, Your Majesty. I sent the vice-captain, and I received the report that you arrived. (glancing at him) I saw your face, too. You may leave now.
LG: (sitting down beside her) Oh no. Look how rough your face has become. Did you stay up every night worrying about me? Is that why?
Noh: (feigning amusement) My goodness. I’ve been at peace since you weren’t here. I slept soundly from early in the evening. There must be a lot of work to catch up on. You should go now.
LG: Why do you keep telling me to go? Why aren’t you asking me anything? I was going to tell you everything if you asked me where I was.
Lady Noh: Hmm. I already know. I know where you’re going. You’re chasing your destiny, aren’t you? This is a secret between you and me, right?
LG: (nodding)

Then, when he disappeared again into that No Man’s Land,

and visited TaeEul,

she no longer panicked like she used to do. She was calmly reading the book of poetry, “Azaleas.”

It was the Secretary who was worried because he disappeared again for several days. Days had passed by for them, but for Lee Gon, he only disappeared for a few hours, about 3 hours, because 4 hours would mean 10 days of absence.

Secretary: You really need to tell me now. Where is His Majesty? It’s the New Year ceremony. You need to at least help me come up with an excuse for his absence.
Noh: Don’t worry. Just plan for it as we normally do. He’ll return before Lunar New Year.

Secretary: But Lunar New Year is the day after tomorrow. I’m on my way to an early grave from worry.

Then Lee Gon entered.

Secretary: Your Majesty.
LG: What’s the date today? Am I back on time? Lunar New Year should be in a day or two.
Lady Noh: It’s the 23rd. You came just in time.

She sounded proud.

LG: (sighing and closing his eyes) Thank God. I lost count.

He lost count of time because he stayed too long inside No Man’s Land.

1 hour in NMLand is about 2.5 days in the real world.
2 hours in NMLand is 5 days in the real world.
3 hours in NMLand is 7.5 days in the real world.
4 hours in NMLand is 10 days in the real world.

Secretary: What on earth is happening? Did you have a secret rendezvous or something amazing like that?
LG: It’s more like illegal immigration but it was quite amazing. See you tomorrow.

This was a far cry from when Lee Gon disappeared first went to the parallel universe, and she accused him of wanting to kill her with stress.

See that? Considering everything that she had done in the story, Lady Noh’s confession in the story that she was originally from TaeEul’s world wasn’t a shocker. I was expecting more. lol.

Noh: It rains often since it’s by the ocean. That’s the only downside. Drink your tea. I’m sure you would have felt upset about how I treated you. I hope you understand that it was all to protect His Majesty.
TaeEul: It’s alright.
Noh: I’m going to ask you something. Can you answer me without asking anything else? And don’t talk about this to anyone. I’m willing to trust you because you seem to be a government official.
TaeEul: Go ahead.
Noh: My name is Noh Oknam. My father’s name is Noh Giseop. My mother is Shin Jeongae. And my sister is Noh Yeongnam. I was born in 1932 in Pyoksong of Hwanghae Province.I left my hometown at the age of 17, and I haven’t heard any news of it for 67 years. So I want to ask. what happened to that war? The war that broke in June 1950.

Moreover, what’s mind-boggling here is what Lady Noh told her at their first one-on-one conversation.

From Ep 5, 28:32.

Noh: Everything is just absurd, but there is one thing I’m sure about. An existence that cannot be explained will bring chaos to the world, and it will only harm our King. So during your stay here, please try to avoid contact with anyone beside the King, the Chief of the Royal guard, and me. Furthermore, don’t get curious about this world, and don’t try to stay. And when I say “this world,” that includes the King.

When we think about this, Lady Noh must have been THE first one whose existence cannot be explained. As far as we know, she was the first one to cross the parallel worlds. It couldn’t be Prince Buyeong, even if she and Prince Buyeong are peers because Prince Buyeong is a descendant of a long line of kings. Lady Noh, on the other hand, is a total transplant with no known roots or ties to the Kingdom. Right?

Now, whether she’s the reason for the chaos to the world or not remains to be seen.

Two more reviews are already in the pipeline. I’m your American tax dollars hard at work during the coronavirus.  Two of my colleagues are already down so I’ve to pick up the slack. 🙂

  1. Yaaay! You are back! You posted, that too such a loooong post🤗🤗🤗 My mind is boggling at all this winding talk of Court Lady Noh😖😖😖 Need to re-read🤔🤔🤔
But I do love those poems..very poignant.

  2. ‘An existence that can not be explained…’ Ironic is the first thing I thought of during her revelation to Tae-Eul. She was cross when LG first brought Tae-Eul over although she recognised her face. Now, Lady Noh has changed her tune, perhaps because Tae-Eul has shown her loyalty and bravery or realises that LG is serious about her.

Why do you think Lady Noh makes Tae-Eul promise to tell no one. Presumably not even LG? It’s not that he wouldn’t believe her, so there must be some other reason. Who and where is Lady Noh’s KoC double, I wonder?

  3. Thanks so much for this analysis, packmule! Lady Noh has been such a chameleon the entire show that I did feel a bit let down by the reveal. It seems a strange choice when the Korean War has been a background issue in this story.

The only thematic link I can think of is that there’s one person who was born two years after Lady Noh left her hometown… Perhaps Lee Lim and Lady Noh are connected in some way. It seems crazy to me that she could be LL’s mother, but I do wonder if Lady Noh replaced someone who could have caused a fuss in the royal court. Maybe an ally of LL’s mother. Lady Noh did say she had a sister.

It would be interesting if there was a big injustice done against LL via the flute. Other than that, I got nothing. Maybe the writer just wanted to show that some switches happened in the past and won’t go into more detail into the specifics..

  4. 자네 Is a more erudite, mannered, adult form of you.

  5. Thank you for posting again @packmule3. Again your analysis awe me

I like poems, so when some dramas (a poem a day, because this is ny first life, and now TKEM) used poems, I like them more. The poems here are sad but beautiful, and the longing theme fit my current moods too

  6. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Thanks very much @pkml3! I barely remembered that you promised to go into this in detail LOL.

I can see your reasoning and why you feel that more should have been in her reveal, although I admit that I was already quite staggered by her being from ROK. She hid the fact that she knew about that other world so well, I didn’t expect that she actually belonged there. That puts a different spin on things. If there are no other earlier travelers, then she could indeed be the cause for chaos.

It’s a pity that HCL isn’t a bit more like Samshin Lady in Goblin, just for the added supernatural element and the assurance that someone a little transcendant has LG’s back. As you say, the balance would have been clearer and more satisfying, … a young child, Fate, taking care of TE and an elderly ‘deity’ taking care of LG.

About balance between the parties: I mentioned before that there was the Unbreakable Sword for LG and SJ might have been TE’s Unbreakable Sword.

So back to one of my images/analogies of this show. Like a chess game where opponents begin on an even playing field, where there was balance at the start and each party moves to eradicate the opponents pieces to have the balance tipped in his own favour, we see the pieces already in play by LL and LG. Each will try to take out or neutralise the other’s pieces.

On LL’s side there’s Luna, PM Koo, and pawns like Song Jeong Hye (Ji Hun’s mum), Park Suk Jin/Min Seon Yeong (SJ’s mum), plus Minions. Luna if she sticks with LL, will be a danger to TE’s dad. However we have hopes that Luna will changeover to TE/LG’s side.

On LG’s side there’s TE, Fate, SJ, JY, ES, HCL, Seung Ah (and likely Na Ri), plus Maximus. LG’s team seems to be strong, but in the game:
    – LL has already taken out Prince Buyeong and claims to be targeting all those close to LG. So our friends are in danger.
    – ES is in hospital and hopefully will be well enough to continue helping actively.
    – JY has a torn ligament after being shot.

I feel that because Fate is partial and has introduced TE and Luna into the game, ie the moves that LL did not make or anticipate, the good will definitely take the victory.

    Gotta run!

  7. Dear @Packmule3, my take on Prince Buyeong keeping the ring is different.

For me the ring remembered him of a thing that he can’t find a SOLUTION… yes he gave an ANSWER that was the correct one at that time: that Lee Lim was dead. But he couldn’t grasp a solution: There was a corpse that corresponds exactly to Lee Lim, but that showed a very advanced level of poliomielitys and died of a broken neck.

Just like Lee Gon has two enigmas with him all the time: a memento about an instrument that couldn’t sound on his own and an object that should’t exist, gotten in a moment where he was miraculously saved.

They are both obsessive not only in having an ANSWER, but also a beautiful SOLUTION leading to said answer. They both kept mementos of the things they couldn’t wrap their minds around. So for me it is a family trait.

Maybe the warmth of late Prince Buyeong’s character stayed with me and I wanted to keep a loving memory of him.

Hope to read you soon!!! =D

  8. @packmule3, in my mind there’s an option E for how HCL Noh knew Lee Gon needed guards to meet him in the bamboo forest, as opposed to his just coming home on his own as he’d done previously: Lee Gon used his KOC cell phone and called her as soon as he and JY arrived with their prisoner.

Maybe learning HCL Noh isn’t a big emotional reveal to us viewers, but to TE it must have resonated. Here is someone who came from her world and successfully lived a long life in the parallel world. It is easier to imagine doing something difficult if you know someone before you has done it.

Looking at TE & LG’s relationship in very simplified terms, they’re a two-career couple with jobs in different, distant cities. For them to be together, who’s going to give up their career, or rebuild it from ground up? TE isn’t yet aware that the door between worlds must be permanently closed, even if LL is neutralized, because of the lengthening time stops each time the portal is used. Lee Gon knows. He also knows that for them to be husband and wife, it has to be one world or the other for the rest of their days, not a two-world commuter relationship. His sense of duty to his kingdom keeps him from abdicating his throne, which is why he is sad during the time stop in front of the church. For them to be together, TE would have to give up all that is dear to her in her world, and he’s not sure he can ask that level of sacrifice of her.

I do want to point out that through eons of human history, people have left behind all that is familiar to move to new locations, knowing they’ll never return. Motivations vary: enforced relocation, escape from want and danger, seeking opportunity, looking for adventure, accompanying a spouse/family. We should not assume TE won’t relocate to KOC because that wouldn’t be a happy ending for her. We each can create own happiness wherever we find ourselves, even in less than ideal conditions. The converse is also true: we can stick with what should be comfortable and make ourselves miserable. Short of being in physical peril, happiness quotient is not dependent on location, but on mindset.

  9. Hi. I may have missed reading this one out but have you already tackled the matter on Luna’s lack of historical existence in the Kingdom of Corea? It’s like NO JTE doppellgänger (even her parents’ doppelgänger) grew up and existed in KOC. The Luna introduced there: (1) used a borrowed name from a stray cat, (2) wore a wig, (3) seemed to have accessed the palace grounds easily, and (4) disappeared in the bamboo forest.

  10. I am going to suggest some things about the portal and the supernatural path based on what we’ve seen:

-There are two portals, one for Lee Gon and one for Lee Lim. (We see Lee Lim using his portal the first time in a bamboo forest, but when LG sets guard in the bamboo forest by the racetrack, where LG’s portal appears, LL does not emerge in KOC at that location.)
-There are two supernatural pathway realms, one for Lee Gon and one for Lee Lim. (Lee Gon has brought red balloons into his.)
-Time difference between supernatural pathway and the worlds: SP 1 minute = about an hour outside; SP 1 hour = about 2.5 days outside. To have kept his age at 43 for 25 years, LL would have had to spend about 3,650 minutes (about 61 hours or 2.5 days) inside the supernatural realm. To reach this total of time, maintaining his same age, yet staying in charge of his pawns and minions in both worlds, LL must have accumulated this time in segments. (Evenly spaced over 25 years would be 146 minutes per year or about 12 minutes a month.)
-Lee Lim has passed through his portal several times after his first escape from KOC to ROK. We know he returned to KOC to: dispose of Lee Seoung Jae’s body to make it look like LL was dead in KOC; pick up the child Kang Hyeon Min from KOC and bring him to ROK to replace Kang Sin Jae; meet with his henchman Yoo Kyung Moo at the salt farm more than a decade after the coup. There may have been many trips to assemble his army and set up its funding.
-Lee Gon passed through his portal the first time when he chased Luna and ended up meeting TE in ROK.
-Transit through the portal can seem instantaneous: Maximus jumps into the portal from one world and lands in the other world.
-LL’s first experience of the time stop was when LG passed through the portal his first time.
-LG’s first awareness of the time stop was when he was in ROK his first time. Prior to his first use of the portal, if time stopped when LL used the portal, LG wasn’t aware of it. (Just didn’t notice? Wasn’t immune to it and time stopped for him as well?)
-LG has been experimenting in the supernatural realm, trying to discover and define its properties.
-Differences in transit time suggest there is more than one method of moving between worlds. We saw Maximus jump through the portal, starting the leap from the bamboo grove in ROK and landing in the bamboo forest in KOC. Riding Maximus on the supernatural pathway takes longer: LG is gone from KOC about 8 days (192 hours), is in ROK a few minutes to speak with [see, hug] TE, so his & Maximus’s round-trip travel time on the supernatural pathway was about 3.2 hours, or about 1.5 hours of hard riding each way.
-If there is a quicker way and a slower way to move between worlds, there must be a practical reason LG chooses the slower method to get to TE.
-Moving between worlds causes a time stop. We don’t know if this is specific to using the portal, or changing from one world to another by any means. If going through the portal creates a time stop, but not when moving from one world to the other by the supernatural path, that knowledge would be a tactical advantage.

We don’t yet know if the supernatural path is an option for travel within the portal, or separate from the portal.

  11. I agree, Welmaris.

And what you said here, “Moving between worlds causes a time stop. We don’t know if this is specific to using the portal, or changing from one world to another by any means. If going through the portal creates a time stop, but not when moving from one world to the other by the supernatural path, that knowledge would be a tactical advantage.”

to me, that’s the advantage of investigating another route aside from the bamboo grove portal WHILE he could. If the portal creates a time stop, but the supernatural path does NOT, then using the supernatural path will delay the dreaded D-DAY when their time ceases to be.

And yes, I came up with the same calculations that you did here, “-Differences in transit time suggest there is more than one method of moving between worlds. We saw Maximus jump through the portal, starting the leap from the bamboo grove in ROK and landing in the bamboo forest in KOC. Riding Maximus on the supernatural pathway takes longer: LG is gone from KOC about 8 days (192 hours), is in ROK a few minutes to speak with [see, hug] TE, so his & Maximus’s round-trip travel time on the supernatural pathway was about 3.2 hours, or about 1.5 hours of hard riding each way.”

I wrote about it when I said that the “No Man’s Land” wasn’t in the bamboo grove portal but somewhere separate and close to the racetracks. That’s why he was gone for about 8 days. If he had gone through the bamboo grove portal, then

    a. the Royal guards would have spotted him and noted that.
    b. he didn’t need to be absent from the palace for that long of a time. The portal was the super-warped speed transit. He could have been arrived in Seoul, stayed there for a few days, then returned to Busan in no time using the Bamboo Grove portal. 🙂

  12. Thank you for explaining so well again packmule3! Because of you and the intelligent bitches😉 found here, I had many light bulbs moments going ahhhh ohhhh yaaaahh as I rewatch episodes now with a keener eye haha.
Would it be too far stretched if she’s a relative of Lee Gon’s mother? Someone said that it could be possible for his mother to be from ROK because of the church that is in both worlds…
So Lady Noh knows a lot of secret stuff then!

  13. I still think Granny Noh is a Shaman. Praying over bowls of water, sending out the flute for a whip upgrade, hanging on to the ID for him. Sounds like tools of the trade to me. She has connections with the local KOC shamans union and talisman guild and has the yellow paper to prove it. She said she meet LG’s grandfather, King H.so she must have spent some time in Screensaver Land. No we don’t know her whole story yet. She could be the Merlin in this story yet. Plus. why in the 2 worlds would you waste an actress with her chops with a 2 dimensional role. That part makes no sense.

*Spell check isn’t working; it is not doing the click selection thing… is that forever? I am a multiple choice speller.

  14. Mammanim is one of my favorite people in the Series.

She was from RoK until King H. brought her to KoC.
She kept Lee Gon’s secret for 25 years and she had a plan. Of course she had.
She had to protect her King to grow up, in order to follow his Destiny.
She knew that the Time was coming for that.

So, when he disappears the first time, she is restless because she was afraid that he went back and didn’t return.
Then in episode 4, LG returns with TE. So, she understands that things are happening, will happen and she had to be calm and strong.

She knew that LG succeeded back in 1994.

I think the reason she asks TE, in episode 13, about the war and revealing too much is that she wanted to show to her that it is plausible for TE, to stay in KOC. But at the same time what HDN really says to TE is that
    she…accepts her.

@Fern is right, TE has showed to everyone that she was a Queen material.

HLN: “Since the moment your ID card fell into the hands of His Majesty,
you have been the one guiding him to his fate.
Please, take good care of His Majesty.”

    So, here it is.
