Start-Up: **2nd** Parody of a Fangirl

Many of you have requested the password for my original post “Ep 13 Parody of a Fangirl.”

A password, by definition, restricts the access of users. I purposely created “Ep 13 Parody of a Fangirl” to be a safe space for this blog’s posters after I observed that many of them are thoroughly confounded by the personal animus of JP’s fans. That thread is intended to be an outlet for their frustrations with fangirls/fanboys. I’m giving them privacy to share their thoughts in that space. Thus, their comments are shielded from public view.

Here is the content of my post. It’s satire. You may read it and — laugh or cry, as @Snow Flower said.

I suggest cackling.

One of the things that gives the fangirls a bad rep is their hysteria.

By hysteria, I mean an excessive, extreme, and disproportionate emotional reaction to a person, thing, or situation. Hysteria comes for the Greek word, hysterikos, which mean uterus or womb. Hysteria and hysterectomy, the surgical procedure involving the removal of the uterus, both have the same root word. But while hysterectomy involves a reproductive organ that’s malfunctioning, hysteria involves a brain which is also sadly…malfunctioning. lol. The brain isn’t thinking logically, and is allowing uncontrolled emotions to make wild assumptions and crazy decisions for the person.

In recent years, there was a pushback on the usage of the word hysteria because it was viewed as sexist. Well, if you think about this, men can be hysterical, too. Have you seen them obsessed over (insert-current-sex-kitten-here)? Have you seen them riot after their home team win the championship in basketball, football, and soccer? Have you seen them with a new electronic gadget, a new home entertainment, a new vehicle?

So yes, Men sure as heck can be hysterical, too, but in a different way. Despite its origin in female anatomy, hysteria is an equal-opportunity malady.

Now, for me, the hysteria of a kdrama fangirl can be the funniest thing to watch. But you must have a shallow sense of humor and a keen eye for the absurd to see through the fake outrage and hysterical outbursts of a fangirl.

Here, I’ll give you 16 examples. I’ll go through Episode 13 with a fangirling heart. Read my examples, learn to spot them on social media, and don’t let words like “cult,” “manipulative,” “gaslighting,” and “abusive” get under your skin.

It’s just hysteria.

  1. I’m happy with the privacy concept, but why on earth was the existence of this elite thread made public?

  2. As public service.

“No animals were harmed during the making of this post” and so.

  3. This one hasn’t asked me for a password yet. 🤨

@packmule3, that gif of Ji Sung ‘Oppa’-ing. 🤣 perfect.

  4. I’m actually devising a way to deal with the HP Season 2 posters. Or a better mousetrap, Fern??

I don’t mind people reading my posts because that’s how we can persuade people with the soundness of an idea. We lay out our case, and then adjust or rethink as needed. Plus, newcomers must be given a pathway to join the original group; they can’t be segregated forever. 🙂

    I like an open thread.

However, I do know that many of our posters get attacked and vilified on social media for expressing an opinion here, and I feel sorry for them. A closed thread is better for them. They can express themselves without fear.

Sigh. A double posting, a protected thread for the oldtimers and an open thread for newcomers, would be tedious so I’m exploring my options.

  5. Would it be like a read-only thread, except for password savvy people who could post? Where’s DoSan when you need him? 😊
I agree that it’s good to have an open forum but potentially frustrating as well. A bit like public interactions in general. Good thing that you are a sensible person and protective of your like-minded (sensible) posters.

  6. “ However, I do know that many of our posters get attacked and vilified on social media for expressing an opinion here, and I feel sorry for them. A closed thread is better for them. They can express themselves without fear.”

@packmule3 I really don’t mind if they take my comments and badmouth me on social media. The way I see it, if I press post on a blog or anywhere, I already am prepared to be quoted/misquoted elsewhere? That’s just inherent in the platform? So for me in HP2 I am well aware that they will come swinging. Am used to it by now. 😂. So do whatever is easiest for you. But once S2 begins there will be more to discuss as new episodes give us more fodder to dissect. I am sure fan girls will still persist in downplaying our theories on social media about snacks and the like (which coincidentally, Shin vindicated us in Thursday’s BTS – he kept insisting IJ open the drawer and eat that snack as he was talking about Long Winter – otherwise it was an NG 😂). So snacks are definitely significant.

  7. I totally agree with @nrlee.

Moreover I don’t want give the idea that we are speaking badly of the fungirls/boys since most of our comment are based on the difficulty that we have to understand them.

Just do what is the easiest and relaxed way for you 😉

  8. I’m like Director Yoon, and this blog is my Sand Box. JP’s fans are like…well, their idol. The posters here are like Dalmi, Dosan and the guys.

As a mentor, I’m not going to allow bullying of my mentees. We talked about the difference between “nitpicking” and verbal abuse. What JP did went beyond nitpicking. It’s not right. I guess, some fans are still behind the curve.

Remember that #metoo movement? Before that movement blew up, I was already protesting how dramas romanticized the physical restraining of women as a form of prelude to a love confession. The scene would typically unfold like this:

The guy grabs the girl by the wrist (or waist or whatever body part was closest),
    the girl struggles,
she says no, and punches him
he forces a kiss on her,
she has no choice but to give in,
    she “melts” in his arms.

I said that it was bullshit. Kdrama writers should stop writing romantic scenes like this because it’s reinforcing in the romantic ideals of an impressionable girl (and boy) that force should be part of lovemaking, of seduction, of courtship.

I said no. The hero should know that when a girl says no, she means no. And a girl should also be taught that when she says no, she means no. Consent is important. And 21st century writers, be they Korean, Thai (ohhh the lakorns are the worst violators), Asian, American, Martian, they should advocate for women’s right to refuse a sexual advance.

Obviously, the fangirls at soompi protested. (rolling eyes here) Later, the #metoo movement happened….

Here, I’m saying that JP wasn’t simply nitpicking. He humiliated the Samsan Tech group to show that he was superior to them. He publicly accused Yongsan’s brother of fraud without evidence. He berated the guys with no intention of offering constructive criticism. He only favored Dalmi.

He was toxic. And that kind of behavior from a mentor and from a boss, or from a boyfriend or husband, is NOT acceptable in the 21st century, in any culture, in any profession.

It’s not acceptable to me when I see our younger posters getting verbally harassed. While it doesn’t bother me personally I don’t want the younger posters here to tolerate this kind of behavior as “normal” because it isn’t.

  9. Thank you for sharing this post.
I always enjoy what you wrote and look forward to your analysis on last 2 episodes.

Regretfully speaking, those satire were true to the core and easy to encounter currently in any social media platform. I’m aware that JP stans were the majority(and/or the loudest too?), but it made me worried that most of them ‘worshipped’ him to the extent of being delusional. They also created a false image of DS, labelled him things and more. They even went after DM because she didn’t fulfill their expectation for JP. Not too mention the role of media who took benefit of the momentum because JP is viral. It resulted in those empty articles that celebrated on JP as the SU hero, overlooking his flaws. I barely saw anything worth reading about DM and DS, the main leads, even tho there were so much other SU-related topics to cover. I saw no problem if JP becomes more popular than the main leads, it means public loves him and KSH did a great job. The problem lies on their double standard and antagonizing DS making him the scapegoat.
With SU nearing the end, I just hope that this too shall pass. I know that not all audiences would want to do the homework of going deeper into the drama story and exploring its characters to know their dynamics. So i just kind of hope for a peaceful end.

  10. Welcome to the blog. I’m sorry to hear all the troubles that you all are encountering online. There really shouldn’t have been a fanwar for this kdrama. As far as I know the main leads never changed.

I have a twitter account for the blog that I seldom use. (lol. @ lovebangwon had to remind me how to send a private message (a “DM”?) on twitter yesterday.)

But I do get reports from the other posters here about the usual antics of the fandom.

I should have another post for today/tonight.

  11. It’s just really odd that fan girls believe that if they sit in the majority that somehow this means their collective voice will sway the writer to pen a different ending so as to appease them? So they shout the loudest. And protest. And blame the writer. Choosing to rubbish her writing (which has been beautiful and layered) and claiming her past works were far better and she’d “lost her touch”?

I agree though @packmule3 normalising bullying or any form is not on. Thank you for being thoughtful and providing a safe space here for everyone. 🍪🍪🍪

  12. I honestly just reading your post start from ep 8/9..i thought you dont watch startup lol

That why i rarely visiting, i only refreshing HP post to read comment.

Glad we always on the same boat 🚣‍♂️
And everytime we are on same boat, that’s mean, war is happening arround twitter world, Instagram, and some forum will full of sh*t bcs minority will be eaten
    😂

  13. Thank you for sharing your post.

You forgot about all the cursing in different languages. I wonder when will they see all of JPs red flags? Sjsjjs

it breaks my heart to see all the Dosan hate. Dosan’s character is like the most human character I have come across with. I see myself a lot in him although I am not a genius lol however most of the struggles he was facing were all too familiar with me. And I can’t help but think if this is the way the JP fangirls treat their friends who are experiencing the same struggles as dosan in real life. It’s really disheartening. As someone in my early 20s who is still finding my own path, I have dreams too but im still trying to figure out if it is truly what I want.

  14. I am sorry for troubling you, packmule3. I agree with @nrllee. Do whatever is easiest for you. We will just ignore those lurkers. They will surely keep ss-ing our comments, put it out there and putting words into our mouth when truth is they are just showing to the world how toxic their actions are and the true colors of HP fandom. Coming to other people’s backyard and stealing. Then making up crazy shit narratives to please their toxic mind, feeling it is justified for them to go vigilante on us for having differing views? Who does that in 21st century? Yes, idiots. They should just stay in school. Their actions show how immature they are. 😒

They accused us for commenting/ posting to validate our existence when in truth they were the ones who keep coming here to peek on us cos we are the very reason for them to stay relevant, for them to keep gaining track with their followers. They live for the number of likes they get. How does that feel, I wonder?😏

  15. 🙂 Sometimes doing the easiest is NOT doing the right thing. But I want us to do the right thing even if it entails more work. I’m a masochist anyway. 😂

Ah. They get more views and likes by posting the blog’s content? I didn’t know that. 😂😂 It’s a very unhealthy way of living: allowing your “enemy” to live inside your head 24/7.

  16. Ahh as someone who is the ONLY team dosan in my friends circle, i remember clearly all the bad things they say about dosan or how jipyeongs is “s0 mucH bEtteR””:

    1. Jipyeong cares about others in his own way. He is more genuine than dosan

Let’s all be honest here. Jipyeong only care about very few things. He cares about money (hence why he doesn’t feel guilty about Yongsan’s brother) and probably grandma and Dalmi. Even though we see as the drama went on, his love language is act of service… he never really put his all. Remember he is filthy rich!!! He can easily set aside some money to support grandma and dalmi if he feels so indebted, yet he didn’t.
I don’t really see him giving his all. While dosan doesn’t have that much to offer at the beginning but he tried his best to help in his ways (NoonGil, taking them to a trip etc). From what i’ve seen so far, for the last three years he just visit them occasionally during the holidays? He didn’t even seem to still be a mentor to Dalmi.

    2. Jipyeong is not rude, he is just giving constructive criticism
No. His words are often unnecessary. And he is not only rude to samsan tech, but also people he see as someone below him. I was always irritated with the way he treats his assistant. Asking him to immediately swap clothes in public is so extra. I would’ve recommend the assistant to file a complaint against him! Moreover, he often leave in the middle of conversation with the assistant. Compare that to dosan who always listen to people… be it dalmi’s wild ideas about their project, yongsan’s aspiration to go to san fransisco etc. He was the leader for the samsan boys in awhile now but he never bosses them around. Even in choosing dalmi as their CEO, he gives his consideration but leave it to them.

    3. Dosan is manipulative because he told Jipyeong about grandma’s condition after he punched Jipyeong

It was definitely not a manipulation. We all know how reluctant dosan receives jipyeong’s help. At that moment he put aside his pride to focus on grandma. Dalmi and Dosan really is alike in this sense because they both are willing to put aside their pride for the greater good.

    4. Dosan is violent!!!
I guess people who say this have an amnesia on all the horrible condescending things he told dosan and samsan tech. This was definitely the last straw for dosan.

I am a bit bummed though that almost everyone in the drama normalize jipyeong’s behaviour. I don’t see the director ever calling him out for being so rude. Grandma always assure he is a good boy (reverse psychology maybe?), dalmi said she is never offended. I am worried these responses lead to lack of growth in jipyeong’s part. I feel like jipyeong’s fans are also normalizing all of his behaviour. This is kinda butchering any chance of a proper character growth for him tbh.
