Hwayugi (Korean Odyssey): A Period Piece on Blood

The Hong sisters didn’t overlook the blood in menstruation.

I know that some people found it baffling how SunMi could have survived all these years from demons attracted to her lotus-flower smelling blood when she had monthly periods.

Well, at the top of my head, I can think of two plausible answers.

The first answer is in the content of the menstrual discharge. It’s not pure blood. While it is true that blood found in the menstrual period is the same as the blood in the veins, the menstrual discharge is also composed of dead tissues and secretions from the endometrium (or the lining of the uterus), and mucous from the cervix and vagina. Menstruation has lots of bacteria, either mixed in with the blood or found in the vagina. That’s why the menstrual discharge is NOT going to smell the same as venous blood. SunMi’s blood might smell of lotus flowers, but I doubt her monthly periods would smell the same.

The second answer – and this one is just a wild theory of mine – is that SunMi did NOT survive on her own all these years. Despite her accusations of being abandoned by OhGong, I think OhGong had been her unseen protector all the while. (I posted my reasons earlier.)

This song and this umbrella then take on a different meaning…. OhGong had been her invisible shield for 25 years.

  1. ………. 😶😶😶

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

My guess all the demons avoid her during her time of the month… PMS and Menstruation turn SunMi into “Demon” herself.. 🤣🤣

  2. I know, right?

When she was having PMS she could turn into PreMier Satan-ette.

Put me out of misery, please: how DO you include emojis in reply/comment box? I’m frustrated. Been trying for a couple of days to figure it out.

Where’s the admin when you need her??!

  3. Emoji? I read and comment via phone/tablet (mine are iPhone and/or iPad) And it’s just the same as inserting emoji while texting/typing

Thanks a bunch for the tip. I’ll visit that website later this afternoon.
