Hwayugi: Jokes and Metas

Jokes, parodies, etc.

Another thing I like about the Hong Sisters is their zippy jokes. Blink and you’ll miss them.

I don’t normally like to explain jokes because it kills the joke. However, sometimes an explanation is in order so other bitches will learn to recognize them next time and appreciate the wit of the Hong sisters.

Take for instance the joke about maintaining a kimchee-level room temperature for the zombie.

When you think about this, a zombie is lifeless, as dead and flaccid as the cabbage leaves used in kimchee. It also smells as pungent as your typical kimchee. Both the zombie and kimchee involve decomposition. So keeping the zombie in “kimchee-level chill” makes sense because, like kimchee, the zombie will maintain its “freshness” and hold off the stink in a chill setting. You can joke then that the kimchee and zombie are both in a state of controlled rotting. 😂

Of course, it’s also funny that Summer twin sister mistakes SunMi for the zombie because she wore less make-up, while zombie’s “dead” make-up is a fashionable trend among young folks.

There are also inside jokes about the characters that poke fun at the actors portraying the characters.

For instance, Mawang spoofs the actor Lee Seunggi’s hit, “Because You’re My Woman.”

Coincidentally, Lee Hongki also sang LSG’s song:

I also found it funny that Lee Hongki’s character is a pig when he once referred to himself as a pig on social.

The word “meta” is also much vaunted with Hong sisters’ romcoms. But what does meta exactly mean?

Meta is about self-awareness. One common example of meta is when a story is about a filmmaker making a documentary about a filmmaker making a documentary. People love to say, “Oh, that’s so meta!”

However if the filmmaker is making a documentary about whales, then that isn’t meta at all. It’s simply a documentary.

You see, what’s important in a meta joke is the loop back. It’s must be recursive.

Examples: you’re arguing with your friend about who argues more. A comedian parodies himself parodying himself. Jerry Seinfeld creates a pilot episode for NBC about characters creating a pilot episode for NBC.

Life imitates art imitating life.

An example in Hwayugi: when we, the audience, see the assistant Hanjoo stop to tie his shoelaces while the zombie is closing in on him, we are wondering if that is the stupidest time for the assistant Hanjoo to wonder whether his child is wondering about his whereabouts.

Do you get that? Next time, you see meta, feel free to be that smart bitch to point it out.

What’s not meta however is Mawang mentioning Jae Suk’s and Jang Nara’s names. Those are merely shout-outs or name-dropping.
