I know you, sassy bitches, are waiting for my post for the 10th episode and it’s coming soon. I have a couple of meetings today so I have to slap on some makeup (or my warpaint, lol) to look halfway human.
I’ll post when I get back this afternoon — which is sometime around dawn in Asia.
Meanwhile… I’ll leave you with this thought re. OhGong’s first “couple” act.
Remember when I posted that in Episode 4, what he did for SunMi wasn’t love? Just search for that post in the search box or go to the Hwayugi index up on top of the front page.
He was angry about the Geumganggo and he wanted to get back at her for entrapment.
Well, in Episode 5 (that episode with the kimono girl and blowing up that world), he actually did his first real “couple” act.
But wait! Don’t go all bitch mode on me, and say, “Duh! packmule3, wasn’t it obvious when he set that world on fire?”
I don’t mean THIS —

He had no choice but to save her. It was part of the GGG, remember? He couldn’t allow her to die.
I meant THIS
“poisoning” Mawang and letting him get a taste of SamJang’s blood. In a twisted way, that was his first “couple” act; he did this for SM and for himself.
Rewatch that scene again, beginning with OhGong and SunMi’s meeting at Namsan tower.
SunMi told him that she was suffering because of the GGG. And that because of the whole situation created by GGG, she didn’t want to trust in her feelings because his affections for her were all fake. She said that she didn’t want him to make her fall in love with him.
SM: Because I like it. I like being with you who says you’ll do everything for me. So I feel like the YOU who tells me that he loves me IS GOING TO make me end up loving you too. But you’re a fake. I’m too much of a fool so it’s TORMENTING me.
OG: Tormenting you?
SM: You said you’d do everything that I want you to for me, right? Then you mustn’t ever do the things that I don’t want. I really don’t want to like you. Don’t ask me to like you.
He stopped to look at her seriously.
OG: If that’s what you want, then that’s what I’ll do.
Now, we move back to the scene with Mawang.
OG told Mawang that he was sharing his best wine, but not just to congratulate him. In fact, it was the exact opposite of a congratulatory drink. OG brought his best wine because he wanted to PUNISH Mawang.
OG: I’m being really tormented because of Geunganggo. (see the word he used, “tormented”) But, you know what? SamJang said she’s being tormented too.
Mawang: Love.
OG: Because of Geunganggo, both SamJang and I are feeling torment. In that case, shouldn’t you feel torment as well, Mawang?
There! He did this as retaliation for the pain he and, more importantly, SunMi, were going through.
He wasn’t protecting SunMi here; he was avenging her. When she told him earlier how tormented she was because she wanted something so desperately but couldn’t get it because of the GGG, OhGong felt and understood her desperation, too. And he was mad enough to fix it in the only way he knew how: strike back at Mawang who brought the GGG.
Remember when he said he had no idea what desperation was?
Well, he finally figured out what desperation meant because he was in the same boat as she was.
He too felt the pain of wanting something he couldn’t have.
For me, destroying that world in film was certainly a grand gesture of love, and it probably foreshadowed the grand finale of the story. However, it pales in comparison as his payback time for Mawang for making him and SunMi suffer in love and in desperation.
His retaliation was well-planned out even before he heard SunMi’s confession. He didn’t like that he was reduced to groveling for her affections like PK’s fangirls seek PK’s attention. It was demeaning to him. It was clear that the original reason of his retaliation was self-centered. It was about him getting his revenge.
But hearing SunMi’s anguish changed his whole perspective from HIS torment to THEIR torment, HIS revenge to THEIR revenge, HIS pain to THEIR pain. The two of them were in it together. He was thinking of themselves as a couple.
I wonder if OG’s sense of being a “couple” was activated when SunMi refused to allow him to accompany her into film world because Mawang might trap “OUR Ohgongie.” He liked the familiarity and ownership expressed in that simple, “our Ohgongie.”
Look at the way he placed that hand behind her back. lol. He looked like a mafia boss. pic credit: dramabeans
But once he realized the SunMi was also hurting from the Geumganggo — and not just him — the whole revenge plot took on a new level. He was doing his revenge for both of them. SunMi was never in real danger. He knew that 1) Mawang wouldn’t harm her because she was SamJang and he needed her to rescue his love-of-his-life, and that 2) he was there to protect SM. OG just wanted Mawang to be tormented as he and SunMi were.
For me, this whole blood-letting with Mawang constituted as OG’s first conscious “couple act” in a twisted Hong sisters way.
“Our” pain.
ha . first couple act . he totaly did to mawang that with such passion because he was hung up on knowing sunmi is falling for him and she’s tormented because of the ggg situation . he knew as you said a – mawang will not harm her and b- if mawang lost control he will be there to knock mawang down ala the elevator backhug .
and whenever oh gong does something for sunmi he never takes credit for it, he pushes it aside like no bigdeal most of the time . i find that the most swooniest thing about oh gong .
I agree with you Cleo! I like that that OhGong has changed, he doesn’t brag about doing things for SM. He just does it. That’s why I think some viewers didn’t see that OG was retaliating for what Mawang did to them both with the GGG. They only thought that OG was being a bad guy bec he endangered SM. OG was actually nice. He only “tormented” Mawang 30 seconds each time. (Right? It was only 30 seconds.) If he was being truly sadistic, he could have made it an hour-long torment.
