Twelve years after the kdrama Goong was televised, we still have unfinished shipping wars to settle. 😂
I brought up Goong in passing while talking about 2nd male leads I preferred to the actual heroes.
Your Highness. replied and said this comment:
I did! I loved Yul Goon. See? I still remember his name. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why the heroine fell for the hero when she had Yul besides her. The hero was a git. Also, not very good looking. LOL.
lovebangwon then chimed in and said that she preferred the main prince.
@yourhighness and @packmule im sorry i love first lead than second one in goong drama. the perfect one wont fit reality :p or because i think the perfect one will makes me bored in the end. kekeke
Since we’re all good friends here (friendship forged from being kicked around at soompi), let’s hear each other out. If you’re a lurking Shin/Chaeyong or Yul/Chaeyong shipper, just post your opinion on why you like Shin or Yul. I honestly want to hear your POV on why you like who you like.
And no… I promise I won’t lock down this thread if you all don’t behave “my” way. 🤣😝😂
Okay, I’ll go first.
The reason I like Yul is that he wore his heart on his sleeves. ❤
I can still remember, at least, four nice things he did for the girl whereas all I remember about Shin is that affair in Thailand with his ex-girlfriend. For me, Shin’s rendezvous with the Other Woman was THE deal-breaker and I couldn’t get past it.
Anyway, these are the four things that I like about Yul.
1. Episode 15, at the family luncheon. I rather like the way that Yul declared, without outing the Princess, that he was in love with her and that was going to fight for her. Only Shin and the Princess knew who Yul was referring to. And when the Princess accidentally bit her tongue (and squealed like a baby, “Blood! There’s blood!” grrrr…I want to pillow punch her), Yul stood up to get ice for her. A man of words… and action.
I wanted Shin to fight for her — give Yul the death stare or tell him to go to hell in a cunning way or to put Yul in his place. When he didn’t, I shrugged and thought, “Hmmm…maybe you deserve to lose the girl, you oaf!”
2. In Episode 10, Yul gave her chocolates after she worked hard entertaining the visiting Prince of Wales. He happened to William’s good friend (lolol) so he helped her out. He was there right beside her, smoothing the way for her, while her husband was gallivanting around in Thailand with his ex, and didn’t even bother call her up to ask how she was doing!
I’m a chocolate fiend. Yul had me at “chocolate.”
He offered her chocolate because he saw that she hadn’t eaten all day, and had just drunk water.
I also remember this scene well because he was telling her with regret that if it weren’t for @#$ fate, he would have been the one sitting with her, after a long day of diplomacy.
And I’m not really sure if fate dealt him a cruel hand or his uncle, Shin’s dad and the current emperor, usurped the throne from him.
3. The packed lunch under the tree. I don’t know from which episode this scene came from but I remember they spent an idyllic afternoon together. Didn’t they go to a museum, too?

4. In Episode 22, the Princess did penance as atonement for something she’d done wrong (I can’t remember what it was for).
That Shin didn’t lift a finger to get her released. As a matter of fact, it felt like HE wanted her punished so he sulked the whole time. Instead, it was Yul who begged the Grandmother to find a way to release the Princess. I also remember the Princess’ barely concealed disappointment that it wasn’t her husband who came to take her home.
I like that she snubbed Shin when he offered to take her back to their quarters. Too little, too late.
See? Those are the things I remembered of this drama. Yul at her side, and the tsundere Prince who had a fling with his ex in Thailand.
But you know me. I’m willing to persuaded. Go ahead and make me fall in love with Shin. 😍
(Lovebangwon and others with blogs, feel free to write your reply in your blogs so you can include pictures there, then post the link here. Thanks!)
Was/is there a team Chaeyong-Yul!?!! 😛 And oh please Jun Ji Hoon was/is good looking but that statement has as much value as me saying I like coffee ice cream.
I am asking was there any scope for Chaeyong-Yul ship because the story was clear in its illogical choices from the start (unlike Reply series). So even with chocolates and him being by her side when it mattered you already know there will be no Chaeyong-Yul. Goong is about stupid blind love and not about logic.
For your Chaeyong-Yul packed lunch under the tree I give you Chaeyong-Shin’s beach trip and (*facepalm*) teddy bear museum tour!
ah. So that’s his full name, Jun Ji Hoon. But isn’t that the name of the actress in “My Love From the Stars” and “Sassy Girl”?
heyyyyy, I didn’t comment about his JJH’s face because I know you, ladies. hahaha. You’ll all call me racist! All I can remember ODD about him is he wore some kind of wire headband in the bathroom. That was the first time I saw a dude wearing that kind of girl’s headband. Do you remember that scene?
I knew that CY-Yul was doomed from the start (just like I knew that Kim Woo Bin was dead meat in The Heirs) but if I were to watch a remake of Goong in 2018, I’d soooo trash Shin…unless the writers update and rewrite his character.
And yes, Goong was so illogical that I still couldn’t believe that I remembered scenes from it. I thought I deleted the whole plot from my memory files. (I wonder what happened to the writer. Did she/he mature, too?)
Remember that episode where Shin was given some sort of aphrodisiac and the royals made the young marry couple stay in the room? Helloo?? What were the writers thinking? Did they actually think that was romantic? Didn’t they even think of the consequences? Absence of consent? Rape? Really?
And the beach trip… now that you mentioned it, I remember … dried fish!!! Did they take pictures with the dead fish or dead seaweeds? hahahaha. I’d rather have dried seaweeds than dried fish. I don’t like dead fish staring at me with those big fish eyes.
I did not hate Shin but I don’t see the draw in his character. CY basically pity loved him because she thought he was unhappy and trapped. I had the same problem in IANAR where the heroine pity loved the hero and the hero fell for her because he “needed” her to survive.
I watched this show about 7 years ago so my memory of it is hazy but one of the reasons I “disliked” Shin was how he passive-aggressively put CY down. He would insult her looks or her talent or her intelligence. Then there was this scene where he refused to let her go with her parents and said she would need HIS permission to leave. Controlling. I know the drama gave it a “I’m afraid she will never return to me and I don’t want to lose her.” Blah blah but that doesn’t refute that it was basically an abusive relationship.
Yul on the other hand was always supportive. He was even ready to leave everything to go away with CY. Remember the scene where CY drove her friends to Yul birthday weekend? Shin dismissed her, didn’t want to “risk” his life. He didn’t even bother to keep an eye on her. But Yul, he drove behind her, all the way. How can I not ship them?
I don’t recall the scene, YourHighness. Was it towards the end because I began skipping episodes after the family luncheon with CY biting her tongue?
I do remember a birthday party of Shin. He received a pair of “designer” sneakers from CY. What did he do with it? Chuck it in the trash? I can’t remember.
Passive aggressiveness? Yes. I remember him saying unnecessarily mean things — like after that trip to Thailand, he gave her a present but told her that it was his charge d’affaires who chose it (or something like that). Okaaayyy. Whatever. Even if that had been the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, would it have hurt him to SHUT up and leave the poor girl be? 🤐
Then there was also something about a cake that she made for him. Did he eat it? Or did he throw it away?
But what I really got me was when CY was fasting and kneeling in atonement for some misdeed and he sulked in his room. He was told by his charge d’affaires to go get CY but he didn’t. Yul came to urge her to drink and/or end it. He called up his palace contacts for an update on CY’s condition because he was out with the emperor on some state function.
If this was a real marriage, I’d tell her to get out and divorce Shin. He had a mean streak. He was mean when he was angry, insecure, possessive or jealous.
And I get it that he was supposed to be a broken, neglected, misunderstood, silent person. He was tsundere. But I think if filmmakers do a remake of this show and do not REHABILITATE his character, his actions won’t fly this time around. They won’t be tolerated now because as you said, they look controlling and abusive.
I agree Shin is too stupid and self centered to be the leading man. The story should not be remade if it is not corrected. One of the reasons why the Thai version failed last year. It was a joke.
I googled the writers and PD. The writer’s last work was Marry me Mary which I thought started well but again got stupid. The second lead was so much a better choice for the heroine. The PDs’ bio shows Playful Kiss. *barf*
The lady from My Love from the stars is Jun Ji Hyun!
Jun Ji Hoon.
Jun Ji Hyun.
Ya! Do you think I pay attention to letters of the third name? 😂To me it’s like reading —
James Cooper III
James Cooper IV
I skipped the ending.
Okay, so I take it that the writer hasn’t yet been exposed to gender studies then if he/she is still writing about submissive and infantalized women/dominant male characters. 😂
ju ji hoon as shin
jun ji hyun in my love from the star
i dont really watching it in detail because in the past there is no hunting husband like reply series. so the lead guy was settled as main otp. and as we all know most of second lead always the perfect one. so i dont really pay intention the second one, because no matter what the lead guy get the girl.lol that why i love ck and shin! they look cute together.
I don’t remember now exactly but I think it was after the family luncheon. The birthday was Yul’s. The one where the shit hit the fan. Shin broke off from his Ballerina but CY misunderstood him and thought he intended to live with the Ballerina. Ah, wait, better clue would be the forced kiss. He wanted to remind her who the husband was. Little git.
