Kdrama Recommendations?

Okay. Let’s cut the chase because I’ve only a month for kdramas. Hopefully, I can delay my next departure. Le sigh.

What kdramas can you recommend?

Last night/early morning, I binged on Lover’s Witch… or was it Witch’s Love? I’ll post my comments there shortly.

I also watched the trailers of

Mr Sunshine (I downloaded it to watch on the plane but the male hero didn’t strike me as appealing. There’s something about him that turns me off…),

What’s Up with Secretary Kim,

Familiar Wife (I saw the first episodes when I was in Seoul because it’s Ji Sung. But darn! I need subs!),

Are You Also Human,

Time, and

Let’s Eat 3 (because I like the main actors. But is there a Happily-Ever-After when the guy changes lovers as regularly as he eats kimchee?)

Choices. Choices. Choices. The sheer number of choices is going to paralyze me.

  1. Hey. Welcome Back!

For me, Are You Human? is so much better than Why Secretary Kim in terms of narrative. WSK has a good start but starts to get boring in the middle. Gteat chemistry between the leads though, that’s why knetz are keen on their beliefs that they’re in a secret relationship for a long time.
Are you Human is really great. The female lead was annoying at first but she got so much better . And Seo Kangjoon is such a great actor for pulling off the robot and the human Namshin at the same time, the facial expressions are on point, you can see that the robot is kind and the human counterpart is mean af. I really recommend it. It’s so underrated but you can see that the production team really tried to bring a quality pre produced drama here.

I’m still watching Mr. Sunshine but there’s just something wrong with the script like they are trying to make it aound nostalgic but all you got are cringe-worthy lines about “love” between YuJin and Aeshin. #creepy

May I recommend “30 but 17” this is my fave right now out of all the airing dramas. Also “My ID is Gangnam Beauty”, I’m reading the webtoon and it’s really great, and even if they don’t follow the narrative of the webtoon religiously, the main plot and direction is still there. It’s about getting plastic surgery but realizing that people will still judge, but discovering people who won’t care what you looked like or your choices but cares about how you are inside that matters.

Sorry for the long post. I’ll wait for your reviews.

  2. I wonder where my long comment went?

  3. Hey there, Sansukini!

30 but 17! Is this kdrama complete already? The male lead seems to be an eye candy too, especially when he looked like a walking shaggy carpet.

    I’ll try it.

Not sure about Gangnam Beauty. Does the plot want to normalize plastic surgery? 😂

I’m a judgmental person, as you know, and I have a low opinion of people who opt for elective cosmetic surgery or enhancement to cave in to societal expectations of perfection. — Btw, I’m saying this as a blonde. I’m supposed to be legally dumb or something. If I dye my hair black, I’ll look like a “brainiac” like Sabrina Duncan in Charlie’s Angels. Lol.

I just finished watching Loverly, Horribly. Will review Episode 1 for my friend in soompi then will begin Are You Human, as you highly recommended it. 👍

  4. It’s still there.

This blog is like a old machinery. It rusted a bit after non-use so it needs a big of oiling here and there.

But I’m glad you’re here, too!!

  5. I’ve only watched Are You Human Too and well.. about 10 episode of What’s up with Secretary Kim (I got bored with this one after the thing that happened to them as kids was revealed and the couple was in a happy relationship; not sure what they used the remaining episodes for)
I really loved Are You Human, the robo is extra sweet, I was almost always grinning from ear to ear while watching.
I watched 1 or 2 episodes of Time and erm.. I can’t say much about it. I was bothered when I figured out the topic is about a guy who only has a few months to live because of a terminal illness. I couldn’t stop thinking of Uncontrollably Fond and figured I prefer to rewatch that instead. So I did that.
I do plan to watch Mr Sunshine but since I didn’t yet, I can’t say anything about it either.

  6. I think you could like Are You Human Too. It’s about a robot, but mainly rising questions about humanity. The show is far from perfect, but I liked it more than I expected. And Seo Kang Joon is phenomenal there.

  7. @pm3
30 but 17 has aired 10 eps so far (20 30mins ep). May I spoil it for you a bit.

The lead guy has a crush on the lead girl in hs, but she got into a big bus accident that caused her to be in a coma for 13 yrs. The guy mistook her name for another girl’s and thought she died in the accident which caused him trauma and guilt bec he was partly responsible for her being in the accident. 13 yrs later they meet again when she woke up and ended up living with him at his house which was her old house, and he was always reminded of his hs crush in her, not knowing that she didn’t die in the accident.

He was only scraggly during the first episodes because he traveled around but cleaned up nicely. There’s also a dog which binds the 2, it ws the f.lead’s puppy that got left behind but the m.lead adopted and raised. Anyway, I love stories with stereotyped characters and this one has a few weird but effectively funny characters, esp the housekeeper, Jennifer.

    About Gangnam Beauty

“Not sure about Gangnam Beauty. Does the plot want to normalize plastic surgery? 😂”

I don’t think it does. She was happy with her decision for awhile but later on discovered that she is still judged for her appearance bec her face is a common plastic surgery face. She was severely bullied for her looks up to the point of suicidè attempt but she was saved and that changed her.
“No matter what anyone says, you are the most precious person to yourself.” A quote taken from when she was stopped from committing suicide.
I think this drama highlights SK’s obsession with beauty, but is redeemed by some characters who show that what you look like is not everything but what’s inside you is what makes you a person worth cherishing. Mirae, even after her surgery, still thinks of herself as ugly, but what I like about how they portray her is that she is not petty or jealous or angry, rather, she is shy and conscious but those are gradually changing bec of her friendship with the male lead (who was her hs classmate and knows what she looked like pre-surgery) who liked her as a person even when she was ugly

  8. I’m skipping Time, too. I don’t want a tearjerker when I’m investing 8 weeks of my life to follow the drama. It’s like being depressed for two months. Nooooo!

Now, I’m really going to watch Secretary Kim since you said the romance is useless fluff after the 10tb episode. 😂

I’ve been spoiled by all these Brit and American shows. The plot only takes 50 minutes to unfold and resolve. Instant gratification!

Then the following week, the story moves on to a new development. Each episode is a stand alone, unlike in kdrama where the whole complicated, convoluted story takes 2 months to progress. Patience is a virtue in watching kdramas. 👍
