Kdrama Recommendations, part 2

Hi there, ladies!

I bought a laptop just for my drama viewing and blogging purposes, and I’m still getting the hang of it. Please bear with me. I’m trying to see if I dictate my blog. hahaha.

(Nope, it’s too much work. Rats. I knew I should have bought a Mac.)

To Sansukini,

You wrote:

For me, Are You Human? is so much better than Why Secretary Kim in terms of narrative. WSK has a good start but starts to get boring in the middle. Gteat chemistry between the leads though, that’s why knetz are keen on their beliefs that they’re in a secret relationship for a long time.
Are you Human is really great. The female lead was annoying at first but she got so much better . And Seo Kangjoon is such a great actor for pulling off the robot and the human Namshin at the same time, the facial expressions are on point, you can see that the robot is kind and the human counterpart is mean af. I really recommend it. It’s so underrated but you can see that the production team really tried to bring a quality pre produced drama here.

Heyyyy!!! Wasn’t the actress here the girl in We Got Married? She married one of the CN Blue singers. Noooo! Don’t tell me that she’s dating Seo Kangjoon!!! (pwahahahaha.)

I’ve always thought that Seo Kangjoon was a good actor – even when he was in embroiled in that Cheese in the Trap mess. I know his character nearly usurped the male lead’s role. And I know the scriptwriter was accused of falling in love with SKJ’s character because she significantly changed the flow of the kdrama… but I thought he was spot on.

So, I’m glad he now has his this drama to “prove” his worth. But you have to kill my suspense and tell me if the heroine falls in love with the robot or the human version, and what happened to the human version? Was he killed off in the story?

To be honest, I’m hesitant to watch a romantic show between an AI (artificial intelligence) and a human because I don’t want view it without also discussing and revisiting different thoughts on what it means to be human. For example, can be considered true empathy or true love, if somebody has only been programmed or “fed” the right codes to simulate empathy and love? Is a robot a moral agent? Is it responsible for its simulated and pre-programmed actions? What rights and responsibilities do a robot have? If it hurts you, is it culpable or is it just a software malfunction?

I think if I take the show seriously, it will be a Pandora’s box for me. The premise is interesting, but knowing my weakness (or fondness) to analyze things, it will be a curse for me.  🙂

To Dorotka,

I think you could like Are You Human Too. It’s about a robot, but mainly rising questions about humanity. The show is far from perfect, but I liked it more than I expected. And Seo Kang Joon is phenomenal there.

I see that Are You Human Too? was a big hit with you ladies here.

Okay. Okay.

I’ll watch it over the weekend and try to keep it light and easy.  For MY sake. So I don’t overheat like a robot. hahaha.

It’s Labor Day weekend so it’s officially the last day to hit the beach. But my husband and I are headed to our mountain retreat to get away from the crowd. We’re leaving early tomorrow and hopefully catch the sunrise over a mountain range. I’ll be a good reminder how divine it is to be human.

To Sansukini again,

I’m still watching Mr. Sunshine but there’s just something wrong with the script like they are trying to make it aound nostalgic but all you got are cringe-worthy lines about “love” between YuJin and Aeshin. #creepy

Yes, creepy. I can’t see Lee Byung-hun as a romantic interest just like I can’t imagine a kissing scene with Arnold Schwarzenegger. And it has nothing to do with LBH’s scandal. I finished fast-forwarded through 6 episodes of Lovely, Horribly with Park Shi Hoo and I was fine separating his scandal with his acting.

And I’ll start with 30 turning 17. If I’m only behind 10 episodes so a marathon is do-able. I tried watching the first episode and I was fine with teenager playing the male lead. But when I saw the teenager playing the girl… ugh!

She’s the same actress who portrayed the young queen in that drama “Seven Day Queen.” My aversion for her, which began in that kdrama, is inexplicable as she’s pretty in real life. Perhaps, her whiny voice grated on me when I was watching that drama.

I find Lee Re (from Radio Romance) easier to look at.

I don’t think there’s a shortage in female child actors despite Kim Sae-Ron, Kim So-Hyun and Kim Yoo-Jung graduating to adulthood.

As for male child actors, it’s always this guy, right? Nam Da-Reum?

  1. Hey! Welcome back. I watched What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? and enjoyed it. It is pure fluff though, no substance. Currently watching My ID is Gagnam Beauty which has a lot to say about beauty and society’s reaction to it. I don’t think it normalizes plastic surgery per se. Rather, it brings home the point that plastic surgery is not the cure all for people’s woes. I think you would find a lot to discuss in this drama. But I see you are going with robot drama, which I couldn’t get into, sadly. Although Seo Kang Joon performance impressed me.

  2. I really missed your blogs. Thanks for including my comment.

I actually had some misgivings before starting ARE YOU HUMAN?
    1. Bec it took the production team a long time to find a timeslot and had to change network.
    2. Bec I know there is a big possibility that this won’t end happily bec it’s a human and a robot.

But at the same time, one of the long trailer reminded me so much of ZETTAI KARESHI, so I knew I had to give this a try. The premise is really different and the 1st ep showed that there’s a lot of budget put on this show to make it special, esp in the robot effects. It really is impressive.

I understand your dilemma on what is true and what is programmed. I thought about that as well. But the thing is, I don’t believe we’re so different from robots with AI. What controls our actions and emotions is not our heart, but our brain and countless chemicals programmed to make us feel and act in certsin ways. So what makes us different from Namshin 3 with regards to what he feels? He was programmed to do alot of things but as the story progressed, him Mom (maker) became more concerned because he does not act accdg to his program anymore but does things out of his own will. So his program develops by itself and there was an instance where they tried to manually control him to hurt others, but he override those himself too. And acted shameful about the things he did when he was being controlled. So I thought, what makes him different when his consciousness for his sorroundings is there and he empathizes with people better than actual people in the show. The drama allows you to ponder. I really enjoyed this from start to finish

  3. Sorry for the long post. Anyway, I just have to add, this is a happy ending, sort of. They both lived. Oh, and Dr. Pokerface from APAD drama is here too, and the ugh! I felt for him from APAD days transversed to his character, but he is a lovable guy here in a way so I forgot about it. No lovelines for him here, just bromance. I also loved how in some episodes, we were allowed to hear the thoughts of the other characters as well in a voice over every start of the episode.

Regarding Mr. Sunshine, you’ll get lines like (from Aeshin to Yujin) “Will you do that with me… love…” without understanding what she was asking about. That’s really cringey and they had to do this topic a few times. So cringey. But the action part is good, the political part is tiring,

  4. About Are You Human Too, it’s nice that it kinda makes one ask stuff about what is human, what it is to feel something. Buuuut.. it’s really mostly just fun to watch.
This is from an article on dramafever about the title: “Furthermore, “Among these people, Namshin III is designed to listen to people until the end, help the weak, and comfort the crying. He is a very humane robot living among inhumane people, that raises the question of what it means to be human. We hope that people can have the courage to say to people who betray the ideals of humanity, ‘Are you human, too?’””
But are we really human if we’re like the robo? Perfectly kind? Because really, that’s not the norm on this planet.

I also like them talking about if he feels anything. And what it is to feel something. That feelings are not in the release of dopamine and stuff like that but in actions. And he acts like he has feelings all the time!

But the best thing about this drama in my view is that .. I feel that so many dramas feel like they can’t let a irrational relationship WIN (human + monkey god = no happy ending; human+goblin nope; human that goes back in time can’t stay with the ruler of the country and change history that way => doomed too & so many more probably)
But they threw all that out the window on this one. Kinda. It’s not all pink.
Sure, human + robot might be a weird thing in a real life scenario but spare me the realism. I’m watching dramas to feel good.

  5. @Oli That’s a great analogy. Same here, I just enjoyed watching Are you human from start to end. I was preparing myself for a sad or meh ending so the ending made me really glad for both NS3 and the human NS.
