Happy Easter!

He is risen!

Christ's descent into hell. Fresco in Chora Monastery, Constantinople. 14th c.

Happy Easter!

And because we like to think in this blog…. This is the Resurrection on a fresco in the Church of the Holy Savior in Turkey. Built in the 4th century, this beautiful Byzantine church was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman empire in the 16th century. The frescoes were covered over as Islam does not tolerate images and icons. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), the church was converted into a museum in the 20th century, and the frescoes were restored.

In Byzantine iconography, Jesus is always seen holding Adam’s hand (he’s the old man in the left) and trampling on the doors of hell (the two wooden slabs under his feet). The figure in red is Eve. The group of people crowding around the opened tombs are saints and prophets. Jesus conquered death for us.

    He is risen indeed, Alleluia!

A Holy and Happy Easter to you @packmule3, @agdr03 and all who pass through here.

I’m glad you chose that frescoe above as I was just doing a little study on Adam and Eve and wanted to take a closer look at what that icon included. That one of the first things Christ did upon rising from the dead, was to go ‘down’ to Hades to take by their hands, those who awaited their day of deliverance, to bring them ‘up’ to heaven is a great comfort. I find it so sweet that it was not just a case of: ‘Well here you are, I’ve come for you so just follow me …’ but, ‘I’ve got you you now, no worries, I’ll never let you go’.

Indeed we pray for Sri Lanka and places terrorised and persecuted. Amen.

  3. Happy Easter!
Blessed Palm Sunday! (to anyone Orthodox here)

Thank you for displaying the beautiful icon.

  4. It’s always humbling for me when I think of how Jesus suffered and died just to save us from our sins. I’ve tried to watch The Passion of Christ a few times but because I couldn’t handle the scourging, I stop. I’ve always cry buckets.

Praying for those lives lost and affected by the Sri Lanka attacks.

Happy Easter everyone! May God’s resurrection give us peace of mind knowing that He lives for us and welcomes us always.
