Is Changsung the Captain’s reincarnation? The Captain is a cutie, lol.
What do you think?
The arrival of his ex-girlfriend, who looks exactly like the princess from the past, combined with Manwol’s melancholy at the end lend credence to the general opinion that Changsung is the Captain reincarnated.
But I’m not convinced of that because of that moonlit scene with the Captain by the lakeshore. Their conversation is intriguing.
Note: She wasn’t by the seashore. I’m convinced that the lake in the Baekdu/Tiger’s painting is the same lake in her past.
See?
Remember her steely look when she viewed the painting for the first time? She said it was useless to attach meaning (or importance) to the painting, as “everything the tiger cherished is somewhere he cannot return to.” I said previously, there was a double meaning there. She was talking about herself, too.
Then remember what she told the Tiger? “The place you want to go to, no longer exists in this world.” She said that with unqualified finality. No ifs, no buts.
But…but tell me what you think about their dialogue and I’ll share with you my thoughts later. 🙂
Captain: You’re here, nooie? (a term for younger sister)
Manwol: How did you find me here?
Captain: Yeonwoo told me. (pause) Ahhhh. You should have told me first if you found a good place like this. Don’t keep it to yourself.
Another reason Yeonwoo doesn’t strike me as her beloved. He should have been jealous and followed the Captain so
Manwol: It’s a good place to drink alone. Get lost! (drinks her alcohol)
Captain sniffs beside her. He captures a firefly in his hands and shows it to her. The firefly escapes and flits in the air. Fireflies appear. The guy smiles at the sight in front of them and Manwol is speechless.
Captain: Now do you realize that this view is much better than the previous one?
Manwol: Fireflies are fireflies. They aren’t that different from others.
I think she’s talking about fireflies. She’s not seeing the magic of the night scene. According to her, what she’s seeing isn’t that special just because fireflies are flitting about. But the Captain challenged her.
Captain: Of course, it is. Before you were alone. But now, I’m here with you.
He claims it’s romantic because of him. In his eyes, the ambiance is special because she has company: him.
Manwol doesn’t answer him.
Captain: (continuing) From now on, every sight you see with me will look different. From now on, drinking alone here won’t make you happy. Mark my words. You’ll be waiting for me to suddenly show up like today.
Wordlessly, he takes her clay wine bottle and takes drink. Manwol just eyes him.

Since the subs from Viki aren’t up yet, I’m writing my review of “Go Go Squid” Ep 7 next.
hi..i’m new here..its always nice reading your blog..it’s like opening a new branch of view insteaf of mainstream one..i’m sorry if my grammar are a mess..
i agree with you..i do not think Chanseong is Captain’s reincarnation..or even Yeon Woo..
at the beach, Man Wol just realised how true about the scenery in front of them can change when someone’s meaningful is with her..it is Chanseong that makes the beach more beautiful & less lonely than earlier because secretly she wants him to be there with her..
I feel very sad for Manwol when the bellhop said how Chanseong should befriended more with human than spirit and ghost so he will not end up alone in this world..she must feel unworthy of him too..somewhere in earlier episode, she wants him to take care of her,to pay attention to her..sort of..
No worries about your grammar. You should see my writing in Chinese. Lol.
True, that scene when the bellhop told her unwittingly that Chansung must mingle more with his kind of people must have upset Manwol. (I’ll have to mention this later when I do my write-up)
But I notice that Manwol changed already.
Earlier with Sanchez, she became so angry when she found out about the GF that she removed her gloves and made a threatening motion to squeeze the life out of Sanchez.
But when the Bellhop talked to her about Chansung going out with GF, she also removed her gloves, but this time, she walked away. She accepted that CS has to be with humans, and not the spirit world.
We’ll have to think about this reincarnation bit some more. And I’m still waiting for the Viki subs. 🙂
Just keep posting and sharing your ideas.
thanks for your kind word..I tend to be carried away for over-analyzing & questioning every single detailed of the scene & shot, reaction even slo-mo of the drama..well,most of the time..
i don’t know if you noticed this but for earlier episode (maybe ep 3?or 4?), when ManWol lead the robbery on princess’s convoy, YeonWoo is the one grabbing blue silk box(?) from princess’ lap..then YeonWoo give the princess a smile before Captain disarmed him..do you think there is any significant for this scene?why are they giving them chance to face each other like that..??or am i just over thinking bout this?
Reincarnation
I personally don’t get the reincarnation vibe where Chan Sung is concerned. I believe it was a bit of misdirection in the script where we see the Princess in the sedan chair, watching Choeng Myung fighting, and hear Ma Go say:’Their connection has lasted for a very long time.’
‘I hope he takes good care of her so that she does not end up getting hurt again.’
I’m guessing that she is probably referring to Choeng Myung and the Princess in the first sentence, but about CS and MW in the 2nd sentence.
If CS were the reincarnation of someone MW cared about, she would have felt the connection from early on.
If CS were the reincarnation of Choeng Myung whom MW seems somewhat dubious about, she wouldn’t be feeling close to CS in the present.
In kdrama logic and in this show’s logic, if the Princess and Mi Rae look the same, then only is one the reincarnation of the other. Since CS does not look like Choeng Myung, he is very unlikely to be his or even anyone’s reincarnation.
Conversation
I mentioned in the other Ep 6 post that I found Choeng Myung too full of himself. We have not been given enough scenes of his time with MW to garner how he should have had the gall to think he was such a big deal to her.
However her lack of response, to his boastful words except for a doubtful look and a slight frown, seems to indicate that she was not entirely warm to the idea of a romance with him.
This is unlike her repartee and liveliness with CS in the present day.
In the past the fireflies did not enliven the scene before her, and neither did Choeng Myung. In the present, Chan Sung, the single firefly (as I suggested in another post) that landed on her tree, makes the scene more beautiful for Man Wol.
I have to agree with you on the lakes; the sene is much more meaningful if they are the same lakes. As for reincarnation, this is the first episode to bring it up in this drama? Mago made it pretty clear the ex girlfriend is the reincarnation of the “princess”. As for CS, I also have a hard time connecting him to a reincarnation of the Captain.
In the scene from the sedan, are 3 people: the princess, the captain, and YW. As Papai mentioned, YW mad a “longer than necessary eye contact” with the princess when he took the blue wrapped package from her hands. As we must include MW, we have four people whose relationship with one of the others could be the subject of the first sentence.
As far as my understanding of Korean goes, the first sentence does not include any gender specifics, so doesn’t reduce the candidate 6 links.
1. Captain and YW
2. Captain and MW
3. Captain and princess
4. YW and MW
5. YW and princess
6. MW and Princess
If the wedding bed chamber scene means that MW killed the princess, the long connection could refer to a killer/victim or cause of betrayal/victim of vengeance link between the princess and MW. Especially if one does not believe that CS is the reincarnation of the captain, this link becomes more likely point of Mago’s first sentence.
The second sentence is gender specific… he (subject) … . This requires (?) that some where in this drama there is a reincarnation of either the captain or YW. Unless we’re being trolled. Given the short list of main characters, is there a candidate for a reincarnation of either the captain or YW other than CS? As for the face… ink Goblin, being reborn with the same face is rare but possible … perhaps that is the case in this drama.
Looking at the beach scene, CS is to MW’s left, at a remove. The first look at the lake in episode 3, YW is to the left of MW, at a remove…
The object in the second sentence is gender less (to my limited understanding of Korean) but given the context, I would also have translated it as “her”. But technically should be “that person.”
Given the choices, not many make sense…
Good points, @flying_tool. Let me sleep on this, then maybe I can jot down something before my flight tomorrow.
I checked it. Anything’s possible of course. And we do still have 10 episodes for the writers to turn Yeonwoo’s smile into something significant later.
However, IF YeonWoo and the Princess knew each other and that smile was supposed to be a sign of recognition, then either Manwol or the Captain should have known about it since Manwol was the leader/good friend of Yeonwoo and the Captain was the guard/escort of the princess.
I think that smile was just YeonWoo being cocky. 🙂
It’s easy to tell if it’s reincarnation or not.
When it is a reincarnation, the actor who plays the character in the past is the same as the one who plays the character in the present.
Since the Captain and Chansung don’t have the same actor, it cannot be his reincarnation.
🙂
