My friend, @agdr03, brought this to my attention.
I thought CS was honest too when he said that ‘no, I don’t feel anything for you’ to MW’s question of ‘do you think your Yeon Woo?, do you love me?’.
Did you watch this from Kissasian, @agdr03? I’ll give you the Viki version.
First, the background:
MW and CS had finished talking about two leaves. He wanted to have a second leaf if he found her lost earring. Feeling pressured by his demand, she pushed back by threatening him, “I’ll kill you if you find it.” He protested that she always twisted her words. He asked if her twisted thinking was a result of living for a long time, “Is that what happens if you stay as a ghost too long?” She boasted that she was born like that.
lol. That was funny. Did you get it? She’s been a hotelier for 1000 years…so if you add her years before she became a hotelier on top of that, then she sure has lived for a long time. In effect, she was proving him correct. Her twisted-ness (or her perverseness, crankiness, contrariness, etc.) was due to her remaining like a ghost for a very long time.
Now, the dialogue:
MW: No, I was born this way. I’ve always been like this. You must not have seen it (meaning, her twisted-ness) in your dreams.
CS: You were kind. Nice, too.
MW: Me?
CS: Yes, you wholeheartedly cared for him. That man’s name was YeonWoo, right? (
MW: (deathly quiet) You also saw YeonWoo.
CS: Yes.
Flashback of MW’s reunion with YW after his release from captivity.
CS: (continuing) You called him so desperately. His name stayed in my mind even after I woke up.
MW: Why? Do you think you’re YeonWoo, this time?
By “this time” she was pointing out that, previously, he thought he was the other guy/ That other guy who helped her write his name.
CS: I had thought for a moment, but probably not.
I love how he kept trying to determine what his place was in her former life — or IF he even had a place in her former life.
MW: Yeonwoo. He was the person who loved me the most in the world. Gu Chansung, do you love me?
Long pause. Long silence. Long staring contest. Her future is hanging in the balance and depending on his answer.
But it’s noteworthy to compare her reaction here to when he thought he was the Captain. That time in Episode 4, she checked out his heartbeat to ascertain that he was the Captain. She shoved him, saying, “It’s not you. I don’t feel anything. If you were that person, there’s no way I would be like this.” Then she took a swig of the champagne. lol. Literally, the memories of the Captain drove her to drink. “Drive someone to drink” is an idiom meaning a person is so riled up that she/he needs alcohol to forget the frustration/rage/anger.
When Chansung persisted on talking about the Captain, “Wasn’t he someone you liked? It seemed like you liked him a lot,” she punished him by assigning him to receive ghosts. “The more you say useless things, the more exorbitant a price you’ll have to pay.” She was angry that time and she blocked off her memories of the Captain.
Now, she just sat there waiting to listen to his answer.
CS: It’s clear that I’m not him.
This version, @agdr03, allows a different interpretation from the Kissasian subs.
Here, Chansung is saying he doesn’t love her the way that Yeonwoo loved her. And I think there’s a distinction in their kind of love.
To me, YeonWoo’s love for Manwol was more like a deep affection and attachment stemming from their long companionship and probably even close family ties. lol. For all we know, YW and MW could have been blood-related.
Chansung doesn’t feel that way for her. I think he’s come to realize that already.
But he probably checked himself from giving her a direct answer and revealing to her his true emotions. He wasn’t going to explain to her that he loves her in a different way. Not as a friend, but as somebody else. (Ha! I shy away from saying, “As a man” because it’s cheesy. But you get what I mean….)
His answer was very prudent. I didn’t think it was the right time either to confess undying love, till-death-do-us-part love, when death is still looming and she has so many unresolved feelings.
What he actually said, word-for-word” is “I am sure that that is not the case”. what the ‘that’ is is just implied. I took it to mean ‘love’ in general: that while he is very much obsessing, he does not think it is love yet. But I like your interpretation better: that what he is feeling is not the brotherly kind of love YW had for her.
Words of love mean nothing to her, but CS making it sound like he does not love her did.
I think MW does not believe in overt romantic declarations at all — see for instance her face in the ep6 end scene, reading the autograph and asking ‘are you confessing?’… Since captain is so smooth and all I am assuming he was very good at professing undying love and that sort of thing… and that the bad way their story ended put her off that kind of thing for good.
What MW is moved by is love shown in action: him embarrassing himself to get her the autograph, finding her earring (even when he was mad at her for room13 and for her pushing him away), or running towards danger to protect her (even when he is a wimp and she does not need that kind of protection from him).
@charlie I like your take on MW not caring for declarations of romantic love but rather the action that shows the caring. Also I felt she never really had any starry eyed look over the Captain, whenever he tried to sweet talk her or boost his own importance to her. At the most she gave him an even thoughtful stare with no signs of heart flutters.
And yes, she cared more that CS was not more moved by her rather sweet words.
Sorry, I’m only replying to this now. I had a busy Friday as usual and when I saw Warm & Cozy, I had to reply there first. 🙂
I can’t remember if it was kissasian or dramacool that I watched episode 6. But yes, what your saying makes a lot of sense. For me though I feel that CS couldn’t say that he loves her because he hasn’t acknowledged it yet even with all the nice things that his done for her. Do you think he’s realized already that he loves her? That’s why his answer fits well too with him answering as YW. YW may love MW more than anyone but I still feel that it was the Captain that she had feelings for.
Am I making sense? LOL. CS said he does not love her because he is not aware of it yet and as YW, there was really no feelings of love.
If I don’t make sense, just ignore me. 😆
Frankly-speaking, I don’t see how he could have fallen for her this quickly. That’s why I didn’t squeal after that kiss in Room 13.
But…
let me explain this on the blog because I see that @GB and @Charlie are talking about this, too.
Oh yeah! The kiss! I think because of the ghosts I’d forgotten that I like kissing scenes. 😆 But I totally forgot about it. CS didn’t even question it did he? He thought it was just to save him from the ghost.
You know what? That was my inkling too. That it wasn’t that he hasn’t realized it but instead he doesn’t feel it yet.
🙂
See that? I don’t think the kiss jolted him or created a lingering effect.
So let me think about this while I go for my morning run.
lol. I was working on my Go Go Squid Ep 8 but I guess I’ll have to shelve it again. I’m halfway through.
Okie dokie!
Enjoy your morning run.
I’m off to bed now.
Laters! 😊
