Extraordinary You: Open Thread

I’m not watching this right now since I can’t fit it in my schedule.

I saw this gif however and it reminded me of my sons since they played football. I might move this up my queue because of the sports. Is the male lead or the secondary male lead playing football? I’m guessing he’s not a quarterback because of the number on his jersey. 🙂

I’m opening this space up for y’all in case you want to talk about it here.

This is what Barbrey has to say about the characters:

I have a theory about Haru. I think he’s Kyung’s alterego, the nicer part of him that the FL loved as a child, the artist, the protector, the kind friend, beaten out of him by his father. Kyung’s not objectively aware of him as himself, but he immediately recognizes Haru as a threat that needs to be beaten down, and also keep him away from the FL. He does like her in a way, and is jealous he seems to be losing her affection, but most of what she liked about him was Haru, and Haru is the part of him that loved her most.

This is all speculation because Haru is not yet well-defined, but it would add an extra layer of interest if true!

  1. If you watch for the sport, I think you will be disapointed. They don’t really practice sport for now.

Personaly, I watch it for Dan-Oh, the FL. I just love her! In the manhwa, she’s a rich girl with a heart disease and in love with Baek Kyung who is part of the A3. Their fathers make business together and Baek Kyung’s father forces him to be friend with Dan-Oh. But when she “wakes up”, her personality is very different. She has a lot of energy, she’s ready to change her fate, find her own love, criticize the writter for the cringy story. Kim Hye Yoon is very good to act all the funny situations and the serious ones.

They realy chose well the actors. They all look they just got out from the manhwa : tall and handsome.

  2. Haha it’s funny because the gif – none of them are the main male lead lol

It’s a drama I have rewatched the 4 episodes 6-7th times now since starting last Tuesday.

Normally don’t want to guess on theories as I don’t want to spoil myself from my own theories lol

But also starting on the new Netflix original The Lies Within.

Thought the best so far in this season is Extraordinary You.

  3. Hey there Peachietime. So you’re watching this too?

    Is this a husband-guessing game then? 😂

  4. “But also starting on the new Netflix original The Lies Within.”

@Peachietime I dropped Vagabond, Melting Me Softly and started The Lies Within. I am hooked. It’s a gripping whodunit. I really like it so far. Not for everyone but I like playing the guessing game.

  5. @sayaris, I agree re the FL! Good actress. This is really something totally different for kdrama without losing the cheesy romance we love while parodying it. Gosh, every time the manga leads are in a scene together I just cringe, but funny that it’s usually an Heirs scene rather than a BOF that makes me cringe. The BoF parodies just make me laugh. I truly hope this show stays delightful to the end.

  6. @packman3, I really wish you were watching Extraordinary You so I had someone to theorize with! My understanding is that the manga is not finished (?? Please correct me someone if I’m wrong), and I’d love to try to figure it all out. This one is right up your alley! But I am afraid of the W type ending. I think the difference is that the characters are not focused on “what does it all mean, who is behind it, how did it happen?” like in W ( leading viewers down the rabbit hole because the characters were searching for answers, suggesting there were answers to be had). Instead, they’re more focused on breaking script, so questions of free will, than the search for an author, though that might come later.

  7. @Barbrey> She’s the soul of the drama. She’s so funny and spunky! When she tests all the boy’s back of the school, I laughed so much !

  8. Okay, just saw the latest episode and I think I’m right about the alter ego thing of Kyung and Haru unless the brother is part of this too. Also I wonder if the Squid Fairy was an extra at one point too? Alter ego of the author? Loved this episode but love them all, just keep getting more intrigued.

  9. @Barbrey> It looks like Haru was the character or the extra of another manhwa Flower. I’m very interested by the story and Haru and Dan-oh are too cute!

  10. @Sayaris- yeah, I just read about this on Soompi.

Heads up: a spoiler follows referencing the manwha that Extraordinary You is based upon.

    Warned you.

Spoiler: Haru and Dan oh are the main characters in another webtoon by the author, and so are just trying to revert to type. Squid Fairy apparently was a bad guy in yet another webtoon and wandered over too.

In regards to my theory, it still could have some truth at root because the drama writers apparently made this story their own and it will not likely end the same way. We’ll see. I don’t get why Haru is always preventing Kyung from getting hurt if they don’t have a connection.

  11. I am still thinking about the characters always talk about the tree, and how it can “see everything from up there”… I’m left wondering what the significance of the tree was. I am disappointed because we never got told the meaning. I can’t find any discussions about this. What is everyone’s opinion??
