When the Camellia Blooms: Ep 18 Joker’s Identity

I marathoned through 6 episodes of Camellia to finally catch up with the series before it ends this Thursday.

But but but…

I don’t think Hyungsik’s dad is the Joker. It’s Hyungsik. I know the police captured the dad but the profile is all wrong.

1. You see, the murderer of the beautician turned up the volume of the radio while he did his killing.

From Ep 16 at 51:07. The dad of Hyungsik was hyper-sensitive to sound. The clocks inside the house had no batteries because they made noise. He probably hated cats because they meowed. And the dad regarded Hyemi a “noisy bitch” but he didn’t kill Hyemi.

2. The murderer is ambidextrous.

From Ep 16 at 24:40. Yongsik consulted a profiler who said that that the murderer favors his left but can use both hands.

From Ep 4 at 1:00:03 While Yongsik was painting the wall of Dongbaek’s bar, Hyungsik was in the bar with him. I told y’all this. It was his (left) hand rubbing the lighter under the table. It couldn’t have been Hyungsik’s dad in the bar. Hyungsik was the one who brought the can of paints for re-painting the wall.

3. The murderer is triggered by either unwanted attention or jealousy.

From Ep 4. The first time he scribbled “Don’t be a joke” on Dongbaek’s wall, Dongbaek had given him peanuts, saying, “The peanuts are on the house for my regulars.” She opened the beer and dropped the opener. When she picked it up, she noticed the flour on his shoes. “Your shoes. It’s like you got flour all over them. Enjoy.”

When she left, he scribbled on the wall. “Dongbaek, you also need to stop being a joke… 2013.7.9.”

Sure, that could’ve been Hyungsik’s dad before the accident. When was the accident anyway? Youngsik only said it happened five years ago. 😂

But the second time Joker scribbled on the wall was after Hyungsik installed the CCTV in the bar (Ep 7 at 50:40). Dongbaek offered Hyungsik food while his mother grumbled why he should be given food for free. Jong-ryul was there, too, and he and Yongsik almost had an altercation in the bar.

That was Hyungsik’s trigger. The dad couldn’t have written that on the wall.

The following Ep 8, titled “I’m the Lynx in this area,” (meaning to be the “craziest” in the area) Youngsik had to recall who saw him buy the CCTV. Hyungsik accompanied him the whole time but people hardly noticed or greeted him personally. All the attention was on Youngsik who was installing a CCTV, with Hyungsik’s help, for Dongbaek’s Pil-gu.

Then, the next thing we knew, the school’s locker room where the baseball team’s office was located, was burned down by arson and a green lighter was left in the area. The target was Pil-gu.

In Ep 14, the market burned down. Dongbaek was supposed to have been killed in it. It was Hyungsik who set the fire then, not the dad. The dad only called the hospital emergency room to check on Dongbaek’s condition, and he tore out the page on which the phone number was written before Hyungsik walked into his room.

Hyungsik then informed him there was a fire at the market. He said, “Did you know that? Appa, please, don’t do anything. Please.”

To me, Hyungsik was warning him not to rat on him to the police. I noticed that the only times that he begged “please” were those moments he didn’t want something revealed and exposed to the world. He begged Dongbaek’s mom, and Youngsik not to tell the truth.

In Ep 16 at 36:06, Youngsik found the lighter on the hood of his car after he spent overnight at Dongbaek’s house. Youngsik suspected it was to provoke him. He stayed with Dongbaek so Joker was upset. That morning, the Joker decided to return the delivery motorcycle to Dongbaek in the abandoned mall.

To me, the dad wouldn’t have cared much about Dongbaek’s dating life to plot a revenge. He didn’t like his son Youngsik bringing home a girl because she was too noisy. So why would he be jealous of Dongbaek’s love life? Moreover, he wouldn’t have KNOWN about it unless Hyungsik was keeping him informed about it.

4. Youngsik showed no fear of his father.

Since his father was mobile, he locked him inside the house to prevent him from reporting his actions to the police.

Instead of fear, he hated his father for the “bad blood” he inherited from him.

Dad: Why did you have to bring that noisy bitch here? You already brought home tons of cats. Did you have to bring her home as well?
HS: You’ve already killed enough of my cats. (So why does he keep bringing them home?) Don’t do anything from now on. Just stay still.

Then flashback of what DB’s mom told him. “You think I didn’t see you? Of course, I saw you. Your eyes. Your brutish eyes.”

HS: You see, I hate my eyes. I hate them because they look just like yours.

His hatred for his eyes was just a metaphor for his deeper hatred for the killer genes or disposition that he inherited from his father.  To me, he was asking Dongbaek’s mom as well as Hongsik to forgive this side of him as he doesn’t mean it.

From Ep 17 at 14:00.

Mom: What do you want? Did you follow me to kill me?
HS: My gaze, how I smell, and my sneaky chuckle. I hate that about me too. I… I’m not doing this because I want to. Please. Don’t do anything. I’ll vouch for it all. So just this once, please.

To me, he hated his father because he blamed him for making him the monster that he’d become.

So, no. 😂 I don’t think the real Joker was captured. But Dongbaek’s now an easy target because everybody’s not paying real attention to the murderer.

Edited to add this:

5. The smell. Dongbaek’s mom said she could smell lacquer on him (Ep 15 at 51:49) on that day five years ago and she recognized it again when Hyungsik walked into bar. Hyungsik didn’t deny the mother’s accusations.

  1. This makes so much sense though I spared no thoughts on who is the real killer in this drama.

Did you see the last episode? I was so angry with the ending..

    aaand.. spoiler..

Are we gone have a time lapse of around 15 years? That would be so cruel, absolutely horrible. I caught up with the last episodes Saturday and saw the last scene just before going to bed. Was mad about it all night. I hate time lapses but 15 years would be the cruelest thing.
Did we get cute PilGu break up his mother’s relationship for years??
I hope the moral of this drama is not to sacrifice your love life for your 8 year old stupid and selfish misunderstandings..
    I already don’t like kids, this ain’t helping :))

  2. Truth be told I skipped the last three minutes so I missed the time lapse. 🤦‍♀️ hahaha It was my dumb blonde moment.

When she said goodbye at the train station, I walked away.

I thought that was too much. She could have sat down and told him that they would cool off temporarily until Pil-gu mended from all this mess but they’d see each other still.

But 15 years is a joke. She didn’t love that much if she was willing to walk away. And she was doing Pil-gu a disservice too, saying that her mother’s love was enough for him. A father’s love, be it from JR, from HS, or both, was good, too. The more people loving the child was better than just one person loving that child.

That has always been my biggest beef with Dongbaek. I think I’ll have to post it on the blog. She did WRONG when she lied and didn’t tell JR about the baby. That was wrong, morally, ethically, and legally.

But I turned a blind eye to that bec I was in a hurry to finish the drama. But her decision to keep baby secret was a selfish act posing as martyrdom. It was her persecution complex (sigh! Another one) rising there. And that had to stop.

Now, at the train station, it was happening again. She thinks the world was out to get her and her son, and instead of seeking outside help, she was turning inwards again. Wrong! She was doing a martyr move again.

I’ll have to post this on the blog.

    😈🙄

Kids do change everything. We had kids late but when the time came, we never looked back.

  3. “She did WRONG when she lied and didn’t tell JR about the baby” Yep

I’m not 100% sure they are separated 15-ish years but at the end of the episode, after the breakup we hear grown up PilGu saying “that’s how my mom’s miraculous spring day came to an end. And with her love and affection I finally grew up”.
And we see him in a suit. He looks 25ish. More?
Anyway.. were they separated all this time? It sounds like it from what he’s saying.
    Ludicrous..

  4. Yes. I’m hoping that DB and YS weren’t really separated and that the final scene of Ep 18 was just a teaser…or a “troll.”

Really. If DB waited 15 years to hook up with YS, I’d be pissed off if I were YS. Like, Gee thanks but no thanks.

  5. This is why I stay in your blog because you explain and know these things that I don’t. 😁

DB’s Mom did say that she saw Hyungsik (I’m getting confused now with his name and Yongsik) at the time when he tried to kill DB. So yes, it has to be Hyungsik, not his Dad. Hyungsik locking his Dad at home was a main key point.

I totally agree that it was wrong on all counts not telling JR about the baby. With DB’s giving up on Yongsik, I realized now that yes, she never really loved him with all her heart because she actually chose between them two whereas she didn’t have to. I’ll ponder on this for a bit.

  6. Or maybe she loves Yongsik but she has a guilt complex and other issues that will be unhealthy too for their relationship. For instance, what if she and YS have a baby? Don’t tell me that “what Pil-gu wants, Pil-gu gets” rule will still apply?

So yes, a timeout is needed to get a breather and to find how things can be improved on or worked on. But to just say “bye! I can’t do this” means she isn’t COMMITTED to the relationship. Marriage is more about commitment to love than the feeling of love. 😂

  7. Of course it cannot be what Pilgu wants, Pilgu gets. I won’t budge on that one too. I thought she was holding on good with YS’ Mom’s disapproval but when it came to Pilgu, she gave him up. She loves him yes but not enough. LOL. I don’t mind a breather but not 15 years too. That’s too much to ask. 🙂

  8. In my make-believe world, Joker’s reappearance will push the two together. Joker will avenge his dad’s incarceration. Kidnap PG and/or DB and YS will find them. PG will rethink his opposition to YS and DB will realize that if she only has a few moments to live, she’ll want to live without regrets or something like that. 😂

  9. Sounds like a real opera huh? 😁 I think you’re on the ball there. LOL.

Or because she gave one of her kidney to her Mom, she wants to live her life to the fullest now. LOL.

  10. Oh yeah. The mom. She looks like a crazed woman too when she was confronting HS.

  11. Yeah, she was fearless wasn’t she? I wouldn’t have confronted HS by myself.

  12. I was angry though when DB went to the empty mall to collect the motorcycle. That was an idiotic move, considering that somebody was out to get her. That must have been a scene that the writer added after the show got an extension.

  13. Oh yeah that too. It was an abandoned mall and she still went in. Common sense went out the window.

  14. Well the drama is titled When the Camellia blooms… and they bloom in autumn. So if PilGu said “that’s how my mom’s miraculous spring days came to an end. And with her love and affection I finally grew up”. There’s summer to go…equivalent to a separation? And then finally autumn, when the camellias bloom 😂. Not sure if this is kosher but that was a random thought after reading comments.

  15. Hopefully you and @PM3 are right, it’s only till the next autumn and the director is just trolling us. 🙂

  16. “ Hopefully you and @PM3 are right, it’s only till the next autumn and the director is just trolling us. 🙂”

But it may be referencing her Seasons in life? That was what I thought it meant (metaphorically). So they meet again in the autumn of her life. Who knows? I haven’t watched 😂

  17. To satisfy my curiosity I went to watch the last few minutes of Ep18 and I can confirm that after the tears at the train station, the voiceover happens (spring days quote) with an adult version of PilGu (?) appearing and talking to his Omma… and he’s in a business suit…so it looks like he’s in his 20s at least.

  18. “Who knows? I haven’t watched 😂”

😁 All good @nrllee , at this point because of the extension it may have to be seasons because of the adult Pilgu in the end.

  19. Yes. Pilgu is all grown up. I don’t know his age in the drama, is it 8 ? 12? Either way there’s a few years there. hehehe

  20. You’re right, Heungsik’s dad is not Joker. Heungsik is also not Joker. His DNA doesn’t match the DNA found under Hyangmi’s fingernails. There is someone else in their household. He looks just like the dad. I think it is his brother. That person is the shaman who blamed Deoksun for her husband’s death.

  21. Wait. Hyungsik has a shaman-uncle? Has this already been established in the story or is this just your theory?

Because I don’t think THAT Shaman is relevant to the story. He’s only a minor character introduced to explain why Deoksun, YS’s mom, feels protective of YS. I don’t think at all that he’s related to Hyungsik’s family.

His DNA, acquired by mouth swab, doesn’t match the DNA in Hyangmi’s fingernail. But as far as I know (lol, don’t ask me how I know this…), an individual can tamper with the result of a DNA mouth swab test by putting saliva that’s not his in a container and ingesting it shortly before a sample is taken. Had the police followed protocols, they would have demanded that Hyungsik gargled first with water before swabbing. But since they had no warrants and they were just fishing, they had no choice but to take the swab as is. Hyungsik was probably one step ahead of them.

BTW, Youngsik discovered that weird container in the trash, remember?

But that still doesn’t explain the weird yellow thing that Hyangmi swallowed….

  22. I can’t even remember the shaman now. LOL. But I’m on Hyungsik being the Joker. So that container had the saliva of the Dad. Ewww.

  23. lol. But don’t take me too seriously. Who knows where the writer intended to go with that container? And who knows what it originally contained? The container can just be… a container.

All I know is it’s possible to contaminate mouth swabs and manipulate tests. Gargling with water is part of protocol.

Maybe the dad IS Joker and these are just weird things that have no meaning.

  24. True. But the fact that Hyungsik locks his Dad at home means he can’t go out but then this is a drama so anything goes. LOL.

  25. A couple of things:

Louise, I thought there was someone else in the household too, maybe a brother, because they abruptly showed that man’s face looking in. But I think that was supposed to be the dad when he was young (the shaman?), and they subsequently aged him up. It was confusing, though, and I wouldn’t mind if there was another sicko in the family just to change things up.I

But if dad was the shaman, didn’t he curse Young Sik’s mom or something, and – maybe lol – the target is not Dongbaek but through her Young Sik and through him the mom?

PKM3, I did have a theory when I first saw dad that was partially borne out. I said it was likely the father was the original killer but had had an accident 5 years ago that put him in a wheelchair so stopped him killing. I

So that part was true. I didn’t realize dad was mobile again, so I had theorized the recent incidents were all Heung Sik, hoping police would blame Joker and not regard DB as a specific target. This part seems not to be the case.

At this point, I think it was the dad, but I agree there are a number of things that still need explaining – which you’ve described – so I hope they do so and the next two episodes aren’t wholly whining and angst. I’d be happy with another twist.

I am so glad someone mentioned JR. What the hell does he need to feel guilty about? That he didn’t guess DB fled to Ongsan after she ran away from him? He had a nervous breakdown! He didn’t know she was pregnant! And don’t they have custody or visitation rights for dads in Korea? Why can’t PG visit dad once a month and on holidays? Go to baseball camp together or something? It’s ridiculous this either-or.

As for the Pil Gu situation. My sister met her now-husband when her son, who she was mostly a single parent for though he did see his dad sometimes, was NINETEEN. It took him five years to accept my sister’s incredibly nice boyfriend. He was horrible to both of them.

She went ahead with the relationship anyway but I have to say if Alex had been eight and reacted like that, I think she’d have ended it too. So would I for that matter. I wonder how most parents handle the situation positively when the children are so young.

  26. High five, barbrey!

I’m with JR, too. If I were JR, I’d be livid that she did that to me. And I’d sue for custody rights ASAP.

Who the heck cares about the negative media publicity? Just do a one-time presscon to announce that he has a child that he hadn’t know till now, demand that the child’s privacy be respected or lawyers will sue, and say no more questions will be entertained.

It’s DB’s persecution complex and inferiority complex that made her run like stupid. I can understand fleeing if JR was an abusive boyfriend. But she ran away with the baby because of her sick complexes. “Ooh. His mother hurt me! He doesn’t love me enough. He’s ashamed of meeeee!” 😭😭😭
    🤬

  27. Wait?!

Were you wondering whose face was it that was peeking behind the door while Hyungsik’s dad was throwing a fit about the cat?

That kid was the young Youngsik. He’s seen HS’ dad slap HS and heard the dad shouting about the cat. Even back then he knew that the dad had this thing about cats, but he FORGOT.

Remember? As YS was running toward the hardware store, he was narrating. He entered the store, HS grabbed his arm and they looked at each other. There was a flashback of HS as a child. Then another child who saw and overheard the whole cat incident. That was Youngsik as a child. That’s why in the voiceover he said, “People easily tend to forget faces.” Meaning he almost FORGOT about Hyungsik’s dad, too.

So, no. There isn’t another child somewhere. 🙂 The Shaman would have to be about the age of YS’s mom and he’d be too old to be jumping out of windows five years ago. 😂

  28. Yes! You’re right about the joke’s identity. It doesn’t seem like it’s the father. Someone also mentioned it on Soompi and she was feeling lonely cause she’s the only one who thinks it’s not the father, but I told her her guess is valid.

People in the neighborhood knows Heungsik’s father can’t walk so it couldn’t be him who’s scratching the lighter under the table at Camellia. Also, there’s the yellow ball Hyangmi swallowed. It’s a mystery, which shows there’s something more to it when it’s revealed in the next episodes.

  29. Pkm3, ah so that’s who it was lol! I do miss things sometimes, particularly going back and forth with subtitles. I do think that Louise might have been confused by that too so maybe I’m not alone? Thanks for clearing that up Pkm3!

Lollyminx you’re right, that’s the best evidence something more is to come. The description was a yellow piece of plastic, thin and long but with a ball on the end? We should brainstorm! What could it be?

  30. I vote for something that has to do with crab catching, like a small plastic buoy or tag that would float above the surface above the trap and identify it as yours because of its colour – in this case yellow. If it isn’t Heung Sik, the only other related to that family is that woman whose husband was away one night, he’s a crabber and I think he’s HS’s cousin.I

So a yellow marker would identify him.

  31. 😂 Many people can only “feel” things are wrong. They have no proof so they’re not believed by others.

    No proof = not valid
No supporting claims = weak argument

Me? When I say something, I go and dig into the script and find out WHY things “feel” wrong. I don’t rely on feelings without proof. 😂

That way, when I present my case to you, whether you like my opinions or not, whether you think I’m stupid bitch or not, the THEORY itself is harder to refute because the supporting arguments are there.

😂 Tell that person in soompi to follow her/his instincts and dig next time. Or to come here and I’ll show her how.

I was never afraid to be the “lone” person in soompi. See? I’ve zero followers. 🤪 I’ve set my settings to disallow followers.

  32. @Barbrey I have no idea and I try not to think about it, on purpose 😂. My memory is bad so I don’t know if something yellow was shown at Heungsik’s hardware store or house. Could it be a cat toy? 😂 I’ll just wait for the episodes tomorrow.

  33. Pwahahaha.

    The yellow “powerball”!!

Since you already chose the crabber, I’m going to say the Norwegian guy. Remember? The Ongsan ahjummas were talking about this guy who went to Norway during the time of the murders? 😂

Or what about the dad of the chubby baseball friend of PG? Does he cough, too? 😂

  34. @packmul3 Hahahaha same although I don’t dig into things much unless it’s really important like work when I get detailed, I’m also not afraid of being the lone person who thinks of or believes in something.

We also have the same views about some parts of Camellia. I also think Jungryeol should have done a press conference. He can’t be faulted for it anyway cause he didn’t know about Pilgu. I also rolled my eyes when it’s being sold to me that I’m supposed to be sad Dongbaek and Yongsik are breaking up. The drama during the breakup was unnecessary imo.

  35. Hear hear, Packmule3!

I agree, though for myself I don’t like rewatching and I’m lazy, so I tend to throw things out that I thought dissonant to the story and see what it stirs up, if anything.

But, my justification is that I’ve read so much I think I’ve read every plot ever written. So my instincts are often good, and just as often I imagine better endings than the author him or herself!

  36. 😂 That’s how I interpreted that scene. Young HS and YS were friends when they were little and YS saw the dad threatening HS about the cats. Of course, his childhood memory and loyalty would create a blind spot and he wouldn’t see Hyungsik as the Joker.

Is this theory correct? I don’t know. Who knows for sure in Ep 18, anyway? 🤷‍♀️ I’m only suggesting that there’s another way to interpret the events (like that director of EY, 😂).

  37. I only vaguely remember the Norway guy but it is kind of suspicious because it’s just an odd detail.

So what would his yellow plastic thing be?

    So far:

Crab buoy/marker – Ongsan cousin to Heung Sik
    Cat toy – Heung Sik

The other thing is the smell of lacquer. The only thing that comes to mind for me at the mention of lacquer is building model planes or cars, or the ultra shiny finish on Asian furniture. So not particularly unusual for a handyman.

  38. 🖐 High five! Me? Sad about the break-up? I strangely wasn’t sad at all about the break-up. As a parent, I understood why she felt pressured to do so. It’s all because of these complexes, these hang-ups that she had. I’ll explain on the blog later.

But she did NOT have to break up. YS was willing to be #3, right? After PG and chicken. 😂

You know, that’s one of the reason I missed the ending scene of PG as a grown-up. I saw DB and YS crying at the train station and I stopped watching it. Oh! The DRAMA!!!🤣🤣😅

  39. Well if it was when they were little I might have to go back to watch again. Because it wasn’t a child’s face but a young man’s I think. Sigh.

  40. I too seem to have missed the ending scene at train station and Pil Gu grown up. I don’t remember those scenes. Did we both just stop watching then in disgust? You know, I think I DID! Noble idiocy time.

  41. Compared with these kdrama writers, I’m sure you can write a better ending.

Me? Don’t ask me to write an ending. I always want to kill people off especially after a long day at work. Just look at me oddly, and I’ve already killed you off in my head. 😈 To write a happy ending, I need to be on my third glass of red wine. 😂

  42. Yes! We both stopped at the train scene. 😂🤪😂 In exasperation.

I knew it was a grownup voice doing PG’s voiceover. But that was all I knew when I was talking with @agdr03 about mom’s having to decide what’s best for the kids.

However, when @oli mentioned something about 15 years later, and I went back to check and voila!! The scene was there after the train station. 😈🤦‍♀️😈

15 years separation is too much. That’s when I said she must not have loved him that much if she was going to give up on him. I can imagine a *breather* a pause or an intermission. But 15 years? 👎 Nope. If I had been YS, I would have moved on. There were plenty of other fish in the sea and so on…

  43. One more dissonance: the small empty jar he sniffed at. Anyone know or guess what that was? It wasn’t a large jar. I wondered if HS been putting vaseline on the inside of his cheeks to mess up the DNA. Or if it contained laquer.

  44. 😂 I already explained to @louise that HS could have contaminated his DNA mouth swab sample by bringing in another saliva sample and ingesting it (ewwww) shortly before the police swabbed his mouth. The contaminant would have been placed in a vial or that plastic container.

It’s in one of my previous comments.

There was a breach of protocol. HS should have gargled before the swab. 🙂

  45. Are we sure they never got together in that time? I guess I’ll have to watch it. 15 years is too much, you’re right. She’ll be about 50, he just a bit younger. So she won’t be having any kids with him.

  46. Not sure.

I’m hoping that there’s a misinterpretation. That DB’s spring season ended bec the hot passionate summer right began after that. That he gained two fathers. And so on. 😂 We’ll just have to wait and see.

If Joker story not finished then DB should still have been in danger then.

  47. I’m hoping the ending scene was the drama trolling us. Otherwise, bleh.

  48. Same here. I thought/hoped it was trolling. Besides, the grown-up Pil-gu looked like he was raised by a mom AND a dad. 😈 He didn’t look like a mama’s boy… He had Youngsik’s cowboy swagger. 😈😂

  49. So funny. There’s a certain politician that needs to beware of me and my collapsible blow gun/untraceable poison dart (Agatha Christie, Poirot on a plane), which I always thought a creative way of murdering someone. Don’t tread on me!

Yeah, I think I saw that about the DNA but not the container. Could be! I actually googled laquer to see if it’s ingestible (it’s not).

  50. hahaha. Are you detective now? Why are you googling lacquer? I could have told you that it was poisonous.

So we still have two mysteries in our hand: the yellow ball and the container. And there was that red yellow star, too, the medical examiner placed on the table while he was talking. Did you notice it?

  51. I have a theory! In Episode 14, Heungsik was crying and begging when Yongsik arrested his father. Heungsik is a clingy son so what if when his father fell those years ago, Heungsik took care of him and then locked him inside even his father has recovered so he wouldn’t get into accidents and die. But since his father is obsessive as he’s a serial killer, Heungsik takes over the “serial killing business” lol just so his father won’t get hurt?

  52. OMG you’re all so detailed. I missed the red yellow star.

  53. 👍that’s good

  54. I should have taken a screen shot too but didn’t. 🙂

It’s a yellow ball and a red star, right?

  55. I didn’t see a red star. Hahaha sometimes I do chores while watching so I miss some parts. 😂

Ooooooooooor… if it’s been Heungsik all along, killing everyone since before, maybe he stopped because he had to take care of his father? And his father fell after dismantling the CCTV at the spa to protect his son. So Heungsik feels guilty that his father is protecting him.

  56. It’s possible that two people did two separate crimes.

The father did the last killing of Hyemi, but the others were done by Hyungsik.

  57. I think the thing about the cats is telling. Why does he bring cats home if dad is going to poison them? It’s like he might have called Hyang Mi to the house with the take out order just so dad would kill her (or Dongbaek).

Why the gloves? No fingerprints. Why the jar? Something in it to disguise the saliva DNA?

  58. Okay, so this is a stretch, but when I looked up laquer it said one craftsman technique is using bare hands to apply it. And there’s a picture of yellow laquered whistles – fitting the description of the yellow thing in Hyang Mi’s throat – on the wikepedia page. Just a random bit of pattern making!

  59. You’re soooo right! I’ve been meaning to point that out. If he knew that his dad was a cat-killer, why bring them home to trigger his dad?

And the cat poison. Who was poisoning the cat? Why would the dad go out of the house to put poison cat food around the neighborhood? Hyungsik must have been poisoning the cat himself.

To me, he brought home the cats knowing full-well that the dad would throw them out.

But the police should have check Hyungsik and the dad for scratches. HyangMi had skin under her nails (right? That’s where the got the DNA, right?) then that meant she scratched somebody. I think it’s the dad with scratch marks, though.

That’s why I revised my theory last night and said the dad must have been there at the murder scene but HS would have had to be the one to move the body (assuming that the dad didn’t have the strength to lift the bike and HM onto the truck).

  60. Fun!

Why does he hate his own eyes? Cause they’re just like dad’s?

HS could be a valid Jekyll and Hyde. Takes on dad’s persona to kill?

  61. Lollyminx called it. But he didn’t stop to take care of his dad. The whole time he had been wearing his dad’s shoes and planting bits of evidence so if he was ever found out he could blame it on his dad. But when his dad had the accident he couldn’t do that any more so he stopped. His dad, however, could walk the whole time, he was just pretending so HS would stop killing.

  62. @Barbrey It was actually @Packmul3 and another user from Soompi who said that Heungsik is the joker. I wasn’t actively thinking about the joker but after reading the Soompi user’s theory, I agreed because that yellow thing Hyangmi swallowed bothered me, like there’s something unresolved because of it. @Packmul3 wrote evidence in detail 😎 then I contributed my own guesses.

  63. Oh yeah I know re Packmule, lollyminx, I was talking about your comment upthread. I independently called HS the second or third episode too, but it was packmule who provided the elegant proof. No, this was after the dad was pegged, and we had a few theories floating around about dad and HS joint, but you called solo upthread. Pkm3 did that too of course.
