Dr Cutie: Ep 15, part 1

@agdr03,

I’ve a dinner meeting tonight, so this will be the first installment.

**********************

I thought the opening scene was funny because the steward Mr. Sheng was coaching Tian Qi to distract General Ji. Did you notice that? When Mr. Sheng escorted her to General Ji, she stood quietly in front of him as if she was waiting for him to acknowledge her and give her orders.

But did you notice? It was Mr. Sheng who signaled her with his eyes —

and she promptly fell to her knees to wail that she’d missed General Ji so much the past few days.

She caught Ji Heng off guard. He was probably thinking, “Okay. What is she up to now? What’s this fracas she’s making?”

So that look she exchanged with Mr. Sheng got me wondering: was there a tacit agreement between them to make Ji Heng laugh with her over-the-top revelations?

TQ: General Ji! I…I.. can finally come back and take care of you. Do you know that I didn’t sleep the whole night?

He smirked because he knew she was exaggerating.

TQ: (effusively) I’ve been looking forward to return to serve you, my lord.

Mr. Sheng cleared his throat to tone it down,

and she realized that she was overreacting.

However, instead of reprimanding her like he usually did whenever she flattered him, he asked her about her meeting with his mother. He anticipated that his mother would summon Tian Qi that morning.

After listening to her report of his mother, he said to himself, “That does seem to work.”

He was pleased that that his elaborate scheme with the Hermit Yuyang worked as planned. His mother no longer required Tian Qi’s services in the future. He threw a knowing look at Mr. Sheng and Mr. Sheng grinned in return.

Tian Qi picked up on their nonverbal communication. She quickly suspected that he had a hand in her rescue. So she asked him directly, “My lord, did you invite Hermit Yuyang to come and save me?”

JH: (firmly) Don’t ask too much. Only a fool can live long.

I like that. He didn’t want her to discover that he’d secretly protected her. He didn’t want his backdoor maneuvering exposed.  Awww. Doesn’t your heart flutter when a guy is modest about his damsel-in-distress rescue?

Since he didn’t answer her, Tian Qi looked questioningly at Mr. Sheng who confirmed in a whisper, “You should thank his lordship.”

Ji Heng frowned at him, and Mr. Sheng pretended ignorance.

This brief interplay told me that Mr. Sheng was eager to give credit where credit was due but Ji Heng didn’t want any. But Qian Ti was no fool. She got the connection and her face brightened up. She began lamenting again.

TQ: My lord, do you know what? When I was sick and dying, at the thought of not being able to serve you, it broke my heart.

He must have been wondering how on earth she could turn on the spigot of flattery with so much dramatic flair. Other people would roll their eyes at her shameless pandering, but he just smirked.

lol. I’m getting used to his smirks.

TQ: These few days, I can’t stop thinking about you night or day. You even came to see me. I’m truly blessed.

Mr. Sheng nodded his head here in approval of Tian Qi’s hyperboles.

While Ji Heng didn’t want to be praised, Mr. Sheng certainly wanted Tian Qi to express her gratitude for the General’s successful ruse.

TQ: I want to take care of you for now and forever.

And she raised her hand in promise. She’s a real cutie, this actress.

For a moment, he smiled at her then he roasted her, “You’re quite an eloquent man. Why don’t you become a storyteller?”

By calling her a storyteller, he was telling her that he wasn’t fooled by her. Not for a second. He was keenly aware that she’d set to entertain him, like a court jester, with her fictitious story of missing him. But to me, although he was telling her that he wasn’t falling for her lies, deep-down inside, he was actually pleased to hear her words.

Tian Qi protested that he questioned her sincerity. She said, “I would never. If so, how can I take care of you?”

JH knew then that no amount of scolding or lecturing from him could stop her cheekiness.

She could see through him now. He was only feigning indifference.

Beside them, Mr. Sheng nodded in approval.

Ji Heng and Tian Qi smiled at each other.

Do you see why I liked this scene?

There were three things going on here.

On the surface, the whole dialogue seemed like all playful bantering. We’re watching Tian Qi make two gentlemen smile at her blarney.

But we’re also seeing Mr. Sheng encourage Tian Qi to amuse Ji Heng. He approved of her brazenness because he was seeing that Ji Heng was responding positively to her crazy antics. Mr. Sheng behaved like a fairy godmother to the couple.

Most importantly, we’re seeing Ji Heng relent to Tian Qi. He was allowing her verbal shenanigans. He didn’t tell her to shut up because she was all nonsense.   He’d become more tolerant and less forbidding with her.

I liked how her biggest whoppers, which used to be a major irritation for him, have now become most irresistible.

  1. Love this! 😍 I was laughing specially at JH’s smirks whenever she goes over the top with compliments for him. 😂 Look at that perfect gif that you put. It’s almost similar to this emoji 😏. 😂

How nice that TQ realised straight away what Mr Shen was telling her and she responded with gusto. 😄 He did play fairy godmother didn’t he? I think he’s jealousy is very much over now because his seen the change in JH.

I know right? JH always says for TQ to shut up but not anymore. She’s been given another exclusive pass. 😁 Sweet!

  2. Yes! Yes! It’s heart fluttering when a man protects you but doesn’t want anything in return and doesn’t want it known.

    Sigh! ❤️❤️❤️

  3. Such a great scene! Mr Sheng is such an interesting character – experienced, cunning but sympathetic. I suspect that life is more bearable for Mr Sheng overall when TQ is keeping JH amused. He isn’t jealous of the attention TQ is getting (in another script it could be the case) and is pleased that something is diverting JH for a change because he has JH’s best interests at heart. He isn’t above scolding or enlightening TQ when she makes mistakes.

I wonder if he has realised that TQ is masquerading or whether he just doesn’t care at this point?

  4. I’m not sure too @Fern but there was that scene where he tried to help TQ change her clothes after she was punished but TQ kept hitting him so he couldn’t do it and he mentioned that to her. 😁

  5. I don’t think Mr Sheng knows that TQ is a girl as of Ep 15. He was shocked when Ji Zheng grabbed TQ’s wrist to save her from getting run over by the carts. 😂 He was shocked bec two guys can’t be holding hands.

  6. Thanks for the upload.

Blarney is the right word. It was blatantly overdone, which she did recognise herself. The storyteller comment recognised that it was a work of fiction. He could equally as well have phrased it in militiary jargon and said “tell it to the Marines (the sailors won’t believe it)”.

However, one reason for using for talking like that is that buried in there are serious messages which will go over the heads of onlookers. I think she really meant it when she said “I would never. If so, how can I take care of you?”.

At first thought, I thought JH did not want to reveal what he had done to save her with the birthcharts because she talks a lot. However, I think it was out of modesty and duty. Remember he saved her from drowning in an earlier episode but did not want the credit?

  7. Oh yes! Up till now TQ doesn’t know that it was JH who saved her from drowning. ☺️

  8. Reasons for keeping it under wraps?

    Modesty.
Plus, safety reason. The less number of people who know about this trick, the less chance his mother will get wind of it.
Also, denial. He doesn’t want to dwell on the reason that he’s been going out of his way to help Tian Qi. Like when he dove into the lake, as you said.

    🙂

I liked your comment from the female perspective..

Yes! Yes! It’s heart fluttering when a man protects you but doesn’t want anything in return and doesn’t want it known.

    Sigh! ❤️❤️❤️

From the male perspective, vulnerability in a woman is both feminine and attractive – it makes him want to look after her. The last thing most guys want is an agressive Amazon so he is becoming the hunted and bullied! In JH’s case he looked after the young Zhao ‘er as a big brother. In TQ, despite her bravado he recognises her underlying (feminine) vulnerability and therefore is looking after her. Unknowingly, he is treating her now as he did when he was young.

In the earlier episodes, JH did not smile ever. Now he does. Mr Sheng appreciates this change and encourages TQ’s non-stuffy, albeit outrageous behaviour.

Had a wild thought for a plot idea. Qian Sun who plays TQ is a ballet dancer. She could have danced in the belly dancer scene and let everybody see her, but nobody would have known it was TQ behind the veil! Would have fitted the character.

  10. you guys should try Find Yourself

  11. @Agdr03 is watching it.

🙂 I don’t like noona-donsaeng romances. But the male lead looks good.

  12. Hi! 😊

It’s actually a pretty good cdrama which has good dynamics and great performances by the actors and actresses.

I can’t see a chart somewhere but it’s like this.

    Twin brother and sister.

Sister – falls in love with the young man. She also has an older man who likes her. Later whey break up, she dates the older man.

Brother – is a University Professor and his students are the young man and a young girl. He falls in love with the young girl later.

Funny scene when the brother realised that his student dated his sister, he asked him if they’ve done it and the young man says ‘you better have some tea’. 😂

Young man – is the big company’s son. The stepmom is very young too so they initially thought she’s his sugar mommy.

Older man – has a niece (the young girl) and it’s the brother’s student at university. He’s best friend’s son is the young man.

When they finally realised who was who, it was so awkward but it was well done.

If ever you have free time, just check out the first episode and see how you go. You can always fast forward too. 😉

There’s still no episode 17 of Dr Cutie. I think it’ll be the death of me. 😭

  13. I’m afraid we’ll all have to wait patiently till Saturday.

  14. Whoa! 1 billion people in China and they just happened to hook up with friends and families. lol. Thanks for explaining the relationship. Do you want me to open a thread for you and whoever wants to discuss this with you? I can do that?

  15. I know right? What’s the possibilities of that. 😄

Nah don’t worry about it, there’s 41 episodes. All good. I’ve only got about 12 episodes left.

I think Dr Cutie finished in China already. 🥰

  16. Since I’m going cray cray with waiting for the episode to come, I’ve been in Instagram looking at posts about Dr Cutie.

Look at this one. He hugged her after her crying scene. Sweet! 🥰 They look really comfortable with each other. ☺️

  17. Sweet. Thanks for sharing.

  18. @agdr03, thank you for posting that. It doesn’t seem contrived like some other back stage videos. I see some real friendship. How ever can he keep a straight face when acting with her?

  19. No worries @Fern ☺️

I thought it was really nice to see that their good friends behind the camera. Comfortable means you can work easily and happily.

There was another video where Huang JunJie (JH) kept eating in between takes. 😁 He’s still a growing boy? 😄 He is too cute! 😊

  20. Yes, this series really suited Sun Qian. I didn’t know she can be good and funny like this. ☺️ I thought she was pretty good too in Meteor Garden.

  21. Jumping the gun slightly to Episode 16, when Dr Sheng diplomatically tells TQ off for being so impetuous and speaking out of turn.

It reminds me of a similar scene at the end of Jane Austen’s Emma, where Emma is put in her place for her rude behaviour by the man who loves her. There is also a feel of Pride and Prejudice here as well – JH would make an excellent smouldering Darcy.

Looking forwards to Episode 17 as well.

  22. I’m working on Ep 16 now.

You’re absolutely right!! It is similar to Emma when Mr. Knightley told her off for embarrassing one of the old ladies. In her desire to “scintillate” during that outdoor picnic, and perhaps because she herself was getting annoyed with the put-downs of the Reverend and his wife, she struck back at the chatty old lady.

But Mr. Knightley felt bad too afterwards for scolding her.

Oooh. Thanks for reminding me about that scene.

  23. In Episode 16 I also liked the way the two maids are very keen to help TQ (as a man) to undress and put on a dress.

The reason I mentioned Emma is that a new version of the film is being released today in the UK. Mr Knightley telling Emma off always stands out to me. It was filmed in part in a very pretty village called Lower Slaughter (the Slaughter refers to mud), not too far from where Prince Charles lives.

Look forwards to your comments on Episode 16.

Watched a little of Oh My General! The opening battle scene was spectacular, but simply not hooked like Dr Cutie. Found the leading man to be too silly and too decadent for my liking.
