And so it starts.
A. “Calm and collected”
Nanase: In the end, it’s just me.
Ryuko: Tell me what’s going on?
Nanase: I’m the only one who gets upset, jealous and depressed. I can’t do anything right. And he always stays so calm and collected.
The kissasian version had Nanase saying, “Being shocked on my own, then getting jealous and depressed. I’m so useless. Even though sensei is always so composed.” From that, I’m assuming that she told Ryuko about finding Miori (the sister) with Tendo in the office. When she said, “I can’t do anything right,” or “I’m so useless,” she deplored that she couldn’t be more collected, confident, and nonchalant. Like Tendo.
Ryuko: Does he really though?
Nanase: What?
Ryuko: No one stays calm and collected when they’re in love.
Nanase looked thoughtful. lol. I could see the wheels turning in her mind. Since Tendo was calm and collected, then maybe he wasn’t in love with her.
Ryuko: (remembering something) That’s right! Look what I have! (starts taking out bottles of wine from a paper bag) Ta-daaa! Amazing, right?
Tendo: (coming out from his shower) That’s enough for tonight.
See that? Nanase said that she wasn’t a good match for him because she got drunk quickly. But for him, that was a problem easily fixed by consuming just “enough.” He didn’t want Nanase drinking more since she couldn’t hold her drink.
He assumed that his sister was taking out the bottles for her and Nanase to drink, so he used his “authority” to stop his sister from pressuring Nanase to drink. He got it wrong, though. Ryuko was taking out the bottles so she could reach into the paperbag for the park tickets.
Ryuko: It’s not what you think! Here these tickets are for you. I won these at a dart competition!
Tendo: (dubious) Where did you even go drinking?
Ryuko: You two should go on a date to a botanical garden, I think.
Nanase: It says amusement park though. (Tendo looked at them)
Ryuko: Oh does it? It doesn’t matter. They’re all parks anyways. It’ll be fun!
Tendo: I don’t have time for that.
Ryuko: What?!
Tendo: (doesn’t answer)
Ryuko: (continuing) There! It’s decided. You two are going on a date on your next day off.
lol. You know what this reminds me of? That time when Nanase had a stalker. Koichi offered to walk her to and from the hospital, then Ryuku suggested that they should act like a couple. Both Koichi and Nanase were caught off-guard so Ryuku asked Tendo, “Or will you do it, Kairi?” Tendo hesitated so Ryuku decided for him, and ordered Koichi to start tomorrow.
Here, she again decided for Tendo. She didn’t know that Tendo didn’t like amusement parks because of the rides. He was afraid of rides. Aut he would need to pretend to be “CALM AND COLLECTED” (just as Nanase imagined him to be) when he accompanied her.
And note the twist here: Ryuko had said, “No one stays calm and collected when they’re in love.” That wasn’t entirely true. As we shall see in this episode, there are times when Tendo must stay calm and collected PRECISELY because he’s in love. Jealousy isn’t the ONLY way to show love.
Nanase: (smiling, looking at the tickets) We’re going on an amusement park date!
Tendo: Wait! I never said I’d go.
Ryuko: Then say it already, baka! Dummy! Devil!
Note: I understand that when Ryuko called her younger brother names, she didn’t mean it seriously. Where I come from, it’s not nice to call people “stupid” — and “bitch,” for that matter, lol. But I think context should come into play here. For instance, calling somebody stupid could be like reverse psychology, e.g., a mother calls her son stupid because she wants him to toughen up and prove her wrong. I use the word “bitch” for my blog to show people that one of the most offensive and vulgar labels for a woman doesn’t have the power to hurt me. I *appropriated* that word so go on ahead and use it.
Anyway…
I also have to point out that DESPITE Tendo calling Nanase “idiot” with increasing affection, he’s NEVER called her by her first name. He’s always called her “Sakura.”
In Episode 1
In Episode 4
And that’s one of the first giveaways that he wasn’t all that calm and collected with Nanase.
B. Jealousy
Koichi bragged to Nanase that he was quite popular in the hospital; he and Tendo were called the Brad Pitt and DiCaprio of cardiology. I think he was referring to Tendo being “untouchable” or unapproachable to the junior staff because he was too cool and collected.
At least, that’s how Nanase described her boyfriend to Kamijo when they first met. Kamijo found her reaction to the apple candy cute and interesting, and he asked her to hang out with him. Nanase immediately turned him down because she had a boyfriend.
Nanase: I can’t. I have a boyfriend.
Kamijo: Eyyyy.
Nanase: He’s wonderful and good at his job.
Kamijo: Sounds like he’s full of himself.
Nanase: But apparently, it’s been obvious for a million years that we’re in different leagues.
Kamijo: Then just be someone in his league.
Nanase: You’re right. That’s a good point. What a great idea. That’s right. I’m a warrior. I’ll do my best.
lol. It’s a good suggestion alright, but Nanase temporarily forgot that that she’d always planned that from the beginning. She told Tendo at the rooftop, “I had nothing. NO plans after graduation. I had no plans for my future, but I found what I wanted to do. I wanted to get to where you are. To help people. That is what I want to do now. I’m going to keep pursuing this dream. Forever!”
See that? From the beginning, she aimed to be someone in “his” league.
However, she didn’t get that Tendo himself wasn’t demanding that she reached his level of competence or ability. If competence had been all that Tendo wanted in a woman, then Miori would have worked just as well for him. After all, Miori was a surgeon like him and very talented, too. But he didn’t regard Miori as a woman — in the same way that he regarded Nanase as THE woman for him.
I explained here:
That’s what he meant when he told her that they were in different leagues. They were meant be different, that is, a man and woman, since time began. lol.
That’s how Kamijo got the wrong impression of Tendo when they met each other at the hospital. Kamijo had this wrong impression that Tendo was a) conceited, self-absorbed, and “full of himself” and b) was mean to Nanase by belittling her. He didn’t actually set out to start trouble for Nanase out of boredom or mischief. Rather, he thought he was helping out Nanase the Warrior in her fight to become to be in the same league as Tendo by showing Tendo that Nanase was “worthy” person.
So what did he do? As soon as Nanase entered his room, he waved at her to show that they knew each other.
Kamijo: Ohh! There you are!
Nanase: Huh? Kamijo-san?
Dr. Rokuru: What? Do you know him?
lol. Tendo’s look…
Kamijo: Thanks for the other day. The date was a lot of fun.
hahaha. Tendo turned again to look at her. To a jealous boyfriend, her face could be interpreted in various ways. She could be shocked to see Kamijo there, or dismayed that she was “caught” dating another guy, or confused because she didn’t understand what Kamijo was joking about.
The nurses: “Date? Oh my!” “Oh goodness, are you two like…”
Nanase: No no no! (then whispering to Tendo) It’s nothing like that…
Again, look at Tendo’s face.
Tendo breathed in, ignoring her. He was exercising his “calming technique.” Kamijo noticed that, and recognized his target.
Kamijo: (addressing Nanase) I’ll be in your care starting today, Yushan-chan.
He glanced at Tendo again, and Tendo looked back at him. Kamijo’s look was challenging Tendo. Tendo knew that Kamijo was going to try to nettle him, but he had to remain calm and collected as his attending physician. He knew he had his work cut out for him.
Then, Dr. Rokuru introduced Tendo.
Kamijo: So you’re the best in the department? (this is rude and rather patronizing)
Dr. Rokuru: (answering for Tendo): Yes.
Kamijo: I picked this hospital because of you.
There’s a double meaning here, of course. He meant he chose it for health reason and for curiosity: he wanted to see who this guy Nanase was proud about.
Tendo: (neutral) We’ll work as a team.
Kamijo: Oh! Nanase-chan. Can I request her to be my dedicated nurse?
The term here is private nurse, a nurse exclusively attending to his needs. The Kissasian sub was better.
Nanase: What?
Tendo: (giving Kamijo his disapproving “look.”)
Nurse: Do you mean Sakura?
Tendo was offended for two reasons:
1. Kamijo asked for a specific nurse, Nanase, to be his private nurse, and that wasn’t done in the hospital.
2. Kamijo referred to Sakura by her first name, Nanase.
This was disrespectful. Tendo was the boyfriend, and yet he had never called Nanase by her first name. Meanwhile, Kamijo dared to call her Nanase in front of others when he and Nanase weren’t close to each other, and the hospital wasn’t a casual environment.
Kamijo was showing off that he was a rich kid who could do anything he wanted.
Dr. Rokuru: But we can’t really assign someone to you exclusively –
Kamijo: (interrupting) Is there a problem, Matron?
Matron: Of course not!
Kamijo: Sweet! We’ll have fun together, Nanase.
Matron: (prodding Nanase) Go on, Sakura.
Nanase: I’ll provide the best nursing care I can. I’ll look forward to working with you. (bowing)
Kamijo looked at her bowing with a huge smile, then he looked at Tendo again. lol. I found this funny because it was obvious that he was trying to get under Tendo’s skin. And it worked. Tendo was trying very hard to control himself.
Do you see now why I said that sometimes, when a person is in love, he must stay calm and collected? lol. Even if killed him, Tendo wasn’t going to allow Kamijo win here. He didn’t want to Kamijo that he succeeded.
But he left that ward in a snit. Nanase was chasing after him to explain.
Nanase: Just in case you have any doubts, I never went on any dates with Kamijo. I ran into him yesterday and I got splashed on.
Tendo: (pausing) Huh?!
Nanase: From the smell, I suspect it was a cup of iced tea.
Tendo: (rolling his eyes) Tsk.
Since he didn’t know the full story, he probably thought this was another example of Kamijo being rude, and Nanase accepting his rudeness passively.
Nanase: (picking up a call) What’s the matter, Kamijo? Yes, I’ll be there. (bowing to Tendo, she scurried back to the ward.)
And this went on and on. He tolerated Kamijo’s shenanigans. The only time he spoke up was at the end. Nanase wanted to talk about Minori.
Nanase: Umm…can I ask you something?
Tendo: (not answering)
Nanase: About Minori.
Tendo: (not answering at first but he probably realized that this was important to her) Minori’s death… The pain and fear of losing someone close to you is still there. It will probably never go away. And as a doctor, I should never forget about it either. But that’s all.
Tendo: You, on the other hand, were way too nice to this crazy kid.
Nanase: Huh?
Tendo: Dedicated nurse, my ass. (lying down) I hate it. (closing his eyes) That’s it.
This is the kissasian version:
Tendo: …But that’s it. What about you? Attracting some weird brat.
Nanase: Huh?
Tendo: What’s with that “exclusive” thing? (lying down) It’s very unpleasant. (closing his eyes) That’s all.
In both versions, we can see that:
1. he was bottling up his resentment all along. He only appeared to be “calm and collected.” And I thought this was cuter than any outward signs of jealousy because he STRUGGLED to maintain composure. Giving in to jealousy would have been the easier way, but fighting it all the way till the end was…hmmm…nobler (The guy was his patient!) and more punitive for him. — lol. I want the guy to suffer in silence, too!
2. he never forgot Kamijo requesting for Nanase as his private nurse and it still rankled. He hated that she was at Kamijo’s beck and call, even when he was pretending to be magnanimous about it when Kamijo apologized earlier:
Kamijo: Hey, I’m sorry I’m always taking up her time.
Tendo: It’s fine. It’s not easy to be hospitalized. Feel free to ask the nurses for help.
I thought Tendo was subtly hinting at him that there were nurses other than Nanase so he didn’t need to monopolize her time.
3. he was uncomfortable talking about his jealousy.
He could talk about Midori’s death in a detached way because it was all in the past. When he said, “But that’s all,” he meant that the affair was done. There was nothing left to explain about his feelings for Midori because it was over.
In contrast, he couldn’t talk calmly about Nanase taking care of Kamijo because he was still upset about it. He was accusatory, (“What about you?”), skeptical, (“‘Dedicated’ nurse, my ass.”) and resentful (“I hate it.”) And when he said, “That’s all,” he meant that he STILL felt annoyed, but he wasn’t going to discuss it any further.
Do you now see the difference when he said, “That’s all” when talking about Midori and talking about Kamijo?
Talking about Midori’s death…
Admitting that he was jealous…
He reminded me of this:
*************
Okay, I’ll have to continue part 2 tomorrow.
Thank you, @packmule3. This was an interesting situation for Tendo, Nanase and Kamijo. I agree that Kamijo initially was just amusing himself by defending Nanase because he felt Tendo was conceited, self-absorbed and full of himself, plus he belittled Nanase.
I feel that Tendo’s natural reserve, his rather cryptic way of expressing himself and his professional ‘cool and collected’ demeanor worked against him in this situation. I’m not convinced that Nanase fully understands what he means by being in different leagues. She wouldn’t have mentioned it to a stranger otherwise – it has been preying on her mind.
Kamijo, on the other hand, recognises Tendo’s body language in regards to Nanase. He is subtly but deliberately insulting to Tendo and the situation escalates from there. Had Tendo had a word with Dr. Koishikawa or the head nurse at that point (or had either of those two been more perceptive), they may have been able to sort something out despite the patient’s request for an exclusive nurse. But that’s not Tendo’s style to ask for assistance and Kamijo was not going to take the hint about the other nurses.
Kamijo becomes jealous, not only of Tendo’s relationship, but also of his competence. Derailing the relationship and Tendo’s professional life is one of the few things within his power.
Tendo might have been calm and collected but he was seething inside especially when Kamijo said that Nanase was like a putty in his hand and doing all sorts of things with him. 😒 Of course Tendo knows better but yeah he really was tested and he showed how much patience he has. What a guy! 🥰
I liked that he did say something about not liking the exclusive nurse bit even if it’s a simple comment like that but Nanase read his jealousy and she was happy. ☺️
Thanks for this! 🙇🏻♀️
Yes, definitely Kamijo became really and truly jealous in the end. He came to really like Nanase too. Patients are also known to develop emotional attachment because they become close to the staff during confinement. Like that little girl had a crush on Tendo.
So Kamijo had feelings for Nanase but envy for Tendo, because Tendo had Nanase, competence, profession, reputation, and coolness. 😎
Whereas he only had his father’s money.
I’ll continue with the other highlights of Ep 7 today. 🙂 We can’t skip the kisses, can we now? 💋 We has three in this episode.
It’s an oath here at BOD’s to look into kisses especially of the dramas that we really like, isn’t it? 😉
We need to see those three kisses definitely. ☺️ One against the door, one at the amusement park and the treatment kiss. 😍
Yes. 😂😂 We can make up any excuse to take a second, third, fourth look at the kisses in a drama, and we justify our puerile interest as intellectual “analysis.” 🤓
We have our priorities straight. 😂😂
We have a total of five so far?
The treatment kiss
The hotel kiss
The million years/against the wall kiss
The ice cream kiss
And Nanase’s treatment kiss.
It’s very intellectual of course! We need to analyse whose lips are dominant, the place/position, the names as you’ve stated and of course the feels of it. 😂 And if it’s defined as a good kiss then the more we can see it again and again and again 😂
Yes! 5 kisses so far! 😍
Yes, and if biting was involved. 😜
Too bad I can’t find gifs of LLF’s kisses.
Oh lip biting! Yeah! 😈
Bummer! No gifs, it would have been awesome if we have but all good. I can just check YouTube 😁
If you find clips of the kisses on YT, please share. I’ll insert them. The ice cream kiss should be a popular one.
Okay, I’ve to get started on writing bec I’ve a tree guy coming in an hour. Sigh. My husband wants to have THREE!! trees cut down, and I’m arguing to give the trees a chance to recuperate and to just cut off the dead limbs for now. My hubby is bribing me with five new trees in exchange for the three “dead” ones. 😑 But those trees are special to me….
He’s worried that a big storm would blow one of those trees down and we’d be killed while we were sleeping.
Hmmm, if both of you declared the tree dead then it’s time to let it go. Do you have pictures of it when it’s still alive? That is a lot, three. Just make sure you say your goodbyes. I’m sure you can see where you’re hubby is coming from with protecting you from it. I think planting 5 trees is great! ☺️
I’ll watch out on those kiss videos for us here. 😉Have a good day! 😴
You two and your Kissometer! Writing from my iPhone which works now.
@packmule, the tree surgeon should know if the trees are worth saving if he or she is worth their salt.
🙂 Yes, I agree. Nanase doesn’t understand what he meant by being in different leagues or being predetermined to be different since a million years ago. She didn’t understand why he moved her up against the wall, and kissed her passionately? hungrily? (lol, I don’t know how the romance books describe that kind of kissing.) And she didn’t understand why he gave that little cough when his sister walked in. It was the same cough that he made after he fell on top of her in the hotel room. hahaha.
Hey,@agdr03, do you know why Tendo gives that little “ahem” when he’s caught in an awkward, body-touching situation?
His comment stuck in Nanase mind so it came out while she was chatting about him.
Being in a different league can also be extrapolated to be a compliment to Nanase’s superior abilities in areas where Tendo is deficient. The shame is that he doesn’t make this clear – she doesn’t hear his praise. For now she humbly accepts what Tendo offers. I think it’s hard for Nanase always to be double guessing as when when Ryuko says ‘no one stays calm and collected when they’re in love.’
To me, Tendo’s feelings come evident in flashes, at odd times and sometimes nearly too late: when he is ill, when he feels threatened by a rival, when she is injured or upset. Compared to Nanase’s open nature, I have the feeling that it’s almost physically difficult for him to relax enough to express his emotions fully. —Although he did well with Nanase’s question about Minori’s death, the despite-different-leagues kiss and the hair tie scene. All were instances that came about because he was reassuring Nanase.
Btw, I’m not sure Ryuko isn’t aware of Tendo’s aversion to amusement parks. He’s her little brother after all. I thought there was an element of her pranking him by putting him in a situation where Nanase would be the more comfortable of the two, yet he would stick it out for pride’s sake. Ryuko knows him well.😉😈
Let me guess about this ‘ahem’ 🤔
– because he wanted to ravish (this might be the best word for that passionate kiss) Nanase but got interrupted
– because he didn’t want his sister to see him not in his usual composure
– because the against the door kissed could have been taken further like his bed
– because his body was certainly not calm and collected
– because he wanted to teach Nanase about physical love
– because he didn’t want to show that his about to lose control
– because he wanted to hide how he was enduring all this time
I don’t know 😂 please so enlighten me ☺️ Nice thoughts at 8:55am 😆
🏆 Trophy for you! Where did you learn this? From romance books? 😂
I don’t really know why he ahem-ed. A fishbone? 🤨
No, when somebody clears his throat, it alerts me that he’s nervous or uncomfortable or anxious. In the hotel, I thought that body contact made him uncomfortable. If I were Tendo, I’d think, “We’re in a hotel room together, she’s nervous, so I should get a grip on myself. What am I thinking??!! Ahem.”
I think with the against-the-wall kiss, he was probably signaling to his sister that she just barged in. But he could have coughed because he almost got caught. So it was a sign of nervousness.
Thanks! You got me, romance books definitely! 😂
Oh how could I forget Geon Woo’s favourite word, uncomfortable 🥰 Tendo was definitely nervous and yes I think it was more a signal to Ryuko that she just barged in and interrupted them moment.
We all noticed how fast Nanase wanted to leave right? 😂 Her lips was ravaged alright! 😈 That swoop kiss was hot!
I think that you are both correct. It seems to be a habit he has to ground himself in such a situation. Great list, @agdr03. You only left out that clearing his throat would allow his voice to sound ‘normal’. How embarrassing if his voice cracked or remained low and sexy when his sister was around.
I probably would have laughed if I caught a younger brother escaping a clinch and his voice cracked or sounded weird to me. Ima b 😈

I love your insights about this drama. I love this drama to the point where I don’t even remember how many times I watched it already and then I found your blog and fell in love with all over again
I initially thought that somehow Ryuko decided for Kairi because she knows that Kairi doesn’t like amusement park rides and that would somehow dispel Nanase’s illusion that her brother is always calm and collected but then I read your blog and totally agree. I like your interpretation better. I don’t whether you stopped writing or something because I don’t see any ep. 10 review from you but regardless thanks a lot for these ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, Airi.
Review of Ep 10 is still in the works. 😂 I might have to rewatch it bec I forgot how it went already.
