Start-Up: Ep 12 Tarzan??

I don’t usually comment on previews but let me give you the connections here.

In the preview we saw these:

a. the prospectus on “Tarzan,”

b. Dalmi in a car telling herself she could do it,

c. And then the car with “Tarzan” on the hood and grill. It had to stop in front of a crash-test dummy.

To me, Dalmi was either taking a driving test or she was test-driving a driverless car.

This preview brought me back to the night when SamSan Tech was brainstorming for their next project. Dalmi was “pretend-pitching” to the team about this driverless car.

And they all thought it was a great idea.

The name Tarzan should be significant to Dosan and Dalmi.

On their first date, Dosan introduced Dalmi, who was a newbie to AI technology, to the concept of machine learning with the use of the metaphor “Tarzan.”

Dosan proceeded to explain how Tarzan would learn Jane’s ways. At first, he tried to give her a rock and Jane didn’t like it. But when he gave her a flower, she became happy. She didn’t like it when he gave her a snake, but liked the bunny he gave her. She was displeased when he yelled, but she was pleased when he smiled. Bit by bit, by building experiences like that, he learned how to win her heart.

And that’s why Dalmi thought that machine learning was romantic when Chulsan asked her if she knew about it.

Then, she gave Dosan a secret smile and Dosan looked away.

It was Dalmi who suggested that they should alter Tarzan’s programming to suit their needs. She said, “Jane like flowers, but I like rocks.”

I explained it all here:

Start-Up: Episode 5

So, what’s my point in bringing all this up?

Well, if you think that she’s moved on from Dosan because she told him that he wasn’t the Dosan who wrote the letters, and returned his baseball to him,

then a rewatch of the drama is in order. 🙂

  1. It’s cute to see a mention of Tarzan again. I’m just glad that Dalmi is doing something for her self hopefully not relying on anyone else (JP) because it’s time she starts growing and fulfilling/following her father’s dream and becoming her own CEO.And ofcourse the person who is going to be a helping hand to her in the next episode is Dosan. Even though he’s apparently being prevented by JP ew, but yeh I’m excited to see how she has grown in the past 3 years, hopefully, lots of maturity, healing with her sister and mum, and headstrong attitude towards getting to her goals.

  2. I’m so thankful to stumble on this gem of a website that rationally and eloquently discusses Start Up! Kudos bitches!!!
I’ve started back reading the SU posts. I also have a group of friends that discuss this kdrama and very early on, I pointed that my favorite scene is the Tarzan+Jane = Machine Learning. I’m kinda biased since my name is Jane. 😊 I am super thrilled that this is one of the threads that hopefully will close the loop as the season ends this weekend. I really enjoyed the backdrop of start up business as story framework in this kdrama. I’m in the technology business yet I learned a lot and I appreciate the tackling of business problems that are also very applicable in life in general. Topics like impostor syndrome, gaslighting, mentoring, find your “why?”, are you CEO material, the pace of technology, giving and receiving feedback, elevator pitch/speech and so much more. For me, there was really no love triangle and I love Dosan’s character (soft spot for guys with USB drives on hand!). My wish is that there will be a start up season 2 with a new batch of residents and other business models.
Again thank you for all the great work! When I have time, I will look back at your TKEM analysis as my gang had so much fun dissecting the episodes then. Cheers!
