My notes:
1. We know that Lee Dam isn’t the only female who “carried” the Marble inside of her. She’s his ninth carrier, and his last chance to turn it blue. The curious thing about her is that he didn’t kiss her to put it inside her.
Here are the other previous Marble-holders, in random order.
One,
I thought she was Hyeri, lol, and the same girl who hung the wind chime!
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six,
Seven,
Eight,
She was the lady in his dreams. He met her when he rescued her from the Japanese soldiers. He showed her kindness by buying her shoes since she was the lone survivor of the massacre.
Fox’s voiceover: I thought it was nothing. (bringing her shoes) Insincere act of kindness. Meaningless kisses. They were just what I do habitually, so I didn’t think it was anything special.
I don’t think he meant something wicked when he said “insincere act of kindness.” He meant that he was only being kind according to conventions or protocols, or his convenience.
Take for instance when Dam’s Bestie JJ sprawled on his car. Dam apologized profusely, and he forgave her easily. Dam thought he was an angel then.
His kindness could be considered “insincere” because it didn’t mean anything to him. He knew that students like Dam and JJ wouldn’t be able to afford reimbursement, and since he wasn’t put out or harmed in a way way, it was more convenient for him to dismiss the matter entirely. The act of kindness was “insincere” in the sense that it was hollow.
Fox’s voiceover: I could have saved her life if I had taken the Marble out, and pretended nothing had happened…if I hadn’t hesitated to take the Marble out, and erase all the memories…if I hadn’t been afraid of being forgotten by her…
He was guilt-ridden because this was his first mistake he’d ever make. He allowed his feelings to cloud his judgment, and because of that, a human being died.
Fox: Just think of this as a bad dream. When you wake up both your memories and pain will be gone.
Woman: Don’t cry. This is not your fault. You just wanted to stay with me. I wish your dream comes true and meet someone to teach you what it is like to be together.
Fox: Did you know it all this time?
Woman: (doesn’t answer and releases the red marble back to him)
Fox’s voiceover: Or if I had never let myself fall in love with her. But it was too late when I realized my mistake.
There are several ways of interpreting this flashback:
a. The woman knew that he had done something to her that was causing her pain and draining her energy. She probably knew that he could end everything but he didn’t because he wanted to be with her.
b. That said, she thought that she wasn’t the love of his life, the one “fated” to be with him. She knew that someone else would come. She was only a “placeholder” for the right one.
How did she know this? Lol. My guess is the old-fashioned way. He didn’t sleep with her while they were together.
They weren’t “together” in the intimate sense. Physical intimacy was NOT a requirement for the marble to turn blue or else he wouldn’t have assured Dam’s mother that there was nothing going on between him and Dam.
c. Mr. Fox loved her, and this was his first love. Hence, he wanted to stay with her as long as possible. As he said, he was afraid of being forgotten.
d. But to me, he didn’t want to take the marble out of her because he was waiting for it to turn blue for her. He was giving the marble as much time as possible to change color, because he’d fallen in love with her. He wanted her to be THE ONE to turn the marble blue for him.
e. Also, to me, Mr. Fox couldn’t get her out of his mind, not so much because she was his first love, but because she was his first death. Do you see the difference?
Nine, Lee Dam.
2. The marble in Lee Dam
He was avoiding a repetition of his fatal error, so he wanted the marble out of Lee Dam before it killed her.
Fox’s voiceover: I might have just wanted to ignore how contradictory it was to me to have someone special.
I think “inimical” is the better word here than “contradictory.” It was most unsuitable for him to be with someone special because he could injure or harm her. The moment someone becomes special to him, it becomes imperative for him to leave her be. That’s because his desire to become a human being was at odds with his desire to be with a human being.
Fox’s voiceover: It was just a coincidence, and that could have been it. That should have been it. She has her family, her life, and her people. Is it fair that I keep her by my side just because she makes my life more interesting, and less lonely…just because I’m afraid I might disappoint her? Until when? Until something really bad happens to her?
To him, Dam was his first family member. But to Dam, he was just one new member of her extended family. Unlike the Joseon woman from his past, Dam had a big family circle; she even had two younger brothers: her real one, and her Bestie JJ. If something bad happened to her, he wouldn’t be the only one grieving.
While he gathering his thoughts, Dam came out of her room. I like her sweatshirt; its message was blatant, “Forget me not.”
Dam: Orashein, you’re up early.
Fox: (thinking to himself) Today is the day I should let her go.
Yes, he’d never been this close to turning his marble blue.
But he didn’t want to endanger Dam so he was extracting it.
Note:
a. If he removes the marble, then it’ll be a sincere act of kindness. And he’ll be giving her a meaningful kiss, rather than a meaningless one. He’s putting her welfare before his.
b. The only problem is he might need the marble a bit longer inside her because there seems to be another gumiho going around the city and attacking people close to Mr. Fox. I don’t think gumihos can kill its own kind.
c. This is a good shot. They were mirroring each other. Same clothes. Same body postures. He was standing in front of the window as if he was about to set a caged Dam free.
3. Meeting Dam’s mother
Mr. Fox really should buy Dam a portable phone charger.
Mom: Are you the owner of the house? How do you know Dam?
Fox: Well…(weighing his words)
If he said, “A precious part of me is inside your daughter’s stomach” this may sound like she’s pregnant. Hmmm…The marble is his baby.
If he said, “I’m paying your daughter’s tuition in exchange for her company,” this may sound like they were in an inappropriate relationship. Sugar daddy?
Mom: Gosh, why are you nervous? Did I ask a hard question to answer?
He looked relieved when Dam arrived.
Dressed in hanbok, they would have looked like a Joseon couple because disciplined for being unfilial.
The interrogation was funny. They both kept coming up with wrong answers, and his magic didn’t work on her mom.
Mom: Daughter, you know how much I hate lies.
Dam: (nodding) Yes.
Mom: From now on, lying will only make this worse.
He knew her mom was putting the screws on Dam alone, and he felt for her.
Mom: Are you living with him?
Dam: No. it’s…uh…it’s…
Fox: (stepping) I can explain.
This is what’s called in kdrama as “taking responsibility.” It’s a trope: men are supposed to “take responsibility.”
Fox: It is true that she’s staying at my house. But there hasn’t been anything to worry about. And there won’t be.
Good answer. The mom didn’t want details. All she wanted to hear was the reassurance that she had nothing to worry about.
Dam’s mom was satisfied with his answer. Of course, she knew a good catch when she saw one.
But all Dam could hear was that he adamantly rejected the possibility of anything happening between them in the future.
4. Samchon
I’m not Korean so I could barely make out the difference between “samchon” and “samcheong” but I thought it was cute that she was calling him samchon, and frequenting the restaurants in the Samcheong-neighborhood. The museum they went to is most likely the “National Folk Museum of Korea.” That museum had lots of dioramas, and I remember that the ceilings being low. The Folk Museum is located along Samcheong-ro.
Three things:
a. Feelings for a niece?
Just like he misunderstood Dam’s confession of love as her ode to steamed egg, he misunderstood his warm feelings for her. He thought it was comparable to an affection towards a niece.
Fox: Me, too. Miss Dam, you are special to me, too. Do you remember? Everything feels like a season that passes by after living for a long period just as I have. At first, you were like that too. You were just a passing shower. But I’m still standing in the rain.
I must say that I’m loving this screenwriter’s use of words. It’s powerfully evocative, and the image is romantic.
Mr. Fox was saying that for somebody like him who lived a millennium, a century can be like a season and a decade like a day. Ordinarily then, this encounter with Dam should be so quick and fleeting, that it would be considered a minor inconvenience, like a passing shower. He would have minded getting drenched standing in the rain.
But, by the smile of his face, and the sound of his voice, his amazement was transparent: he was enjoying and savoring every minute of this atmospheric turbulence called Lee Dam.
Do you see the poetry?
Fox: (continuing) It’s difficult to explain our relationship apart from the Marble and the contract. But to me you are special.
Dam: And by that, you mean…
She gripped her fingers.
This is a cute reaction shot because she did the same thing while listening to the Fermina Daza quote in Episode 4. She was controlling herself.
Fox: You’re like a family to me.
Dam: Sorry?
Fox: (eyes glistening with joy) I’ve never had any family, but I always though it’d be like this to have a family. Well, it’d be weird to say you’re like my daughter, so more like a niece.
Hyeri’s appalled face here is like straight out of a cartoon.
I like how the sound director changed the music. It sounded like wheels were churning, and it suggested that Dam wasn’t going to let this insult slide. She was plotting her own retaliation.

And it matched the coffee product placement. Mr. Fox was just innocently mixing hot coffee. He didn’t know that she doing some stirring of her own, and she was going to rile him up well and good before he knew what hit him.
Fox: Are you going to school? You should grab a cup of coffee.
Dam: Mmm! It smells nice. It’s like coffee you get at a café.
I repeat: this was great PPL. It was part of the story.
Fox: (proud of himself)
Dam: I almost gave you my credit card to pay for it, Samchon.
I’m not Korean, but I think there’s a double meaning here, too. Samchon means “uncle” but I heard that a young woman can use this term for an “ahjussi” whom she was friendly with. It was more familiar than “ahjussi,” similar to calling the lady who serves at a local restaurant “imo” instead of “ahjumma.”
Fox: (shocked) Sam…?
Dam: (talking quickly) I gave this a thought. I thought it’d be better if I called you my uncle instead of sir, because I’m like a niece to you.
Her face!
Fox: Miss Dam…
Dam: And on a good day, feel free to give me some pocket money, too, because I’m like a niece to you. Then, goodbye. Samchon.
Fox: (sighing) Did I do something wrong again? Let’s look back on what I did, WooYeo.
On the way to school, she wondered how he could mistake for a niece. Then, she recalled her past behavior with him. She borrowed his men’s toner. He’d seen her dressed sloppily. She pigged out late-night snacks. No wonder he saw her like a niece; he’d seen her peculiarities.
Thinking to herself, she realized that she should be grateful that he viewed her as human instead of beast…unlike her Bestie JJ who called her a pig.
JJ’s tactlessness knows no bounds. I laughed when he confirmed that she was rejected. “You did. You were turned down out into the outer universe.” Meaning, she was repulsed so hard that if she had been a missile, she would have easily rocketed to outer space.
b. Correcting her misunderstanding
I like how he tried to sort out her feelings because it bothered him that she was displeased with him. Unlike when they had their first argument because he erased her brother’s and JJ’s memories without her permission, he didn’t wait to ask her what’s wrong.
He texted her, “Miss Dam, may we have a word after your blind date? Is it bad to say you’re like a niece?” Too bad, he hesitated. The next time, though, he was able to get it out of his chest.
Fox: Hey, Miss Dam. Miss Dam. Can you tell me?
Dam: Tell you what?
Fox: Why were you offended when I said you’re like a niece to me? Please tell me.
Dam: Yes, right. I see. Well.
Fox: Miss Dam. As you know, the only thing I can do is mimicking what humans do, so my choice of words may not have been proper. But what I wanted to tell you on that day wasn’t that you’re like a niece. I meant that you’re special.
Meaning, she missed the point. The “niece” wasn’t his point, but “family” was.
He considered her special because for the first time ever, he cared for somebody as a family. He denied being friends with a fellow gumiho, HyeSun, although they spent almost 700 years together. But here was Dam, who in a matter of weeks, he already regarded as a family member.
Fox: (continuing) Over the 1000 years of my life, I never took in anybody like they’re my family. It took me lots of courage to say what I shared with you. Could you understand what I was trying to say?
Dam: (thinking) If you continue to be so nice to me, I can’t get over you.
This is an interesting confession. Did he mean to say that he never treated the Joseon Woman like his family? Anyway…
I like that he admitted that opening up to her about his emotions wasn’t an easy task. It took him a “lot of courage.” I like that he knew it was risky to open up, but he was willing to become vulnerable.
He was asking her to be patient with him and to make allowances should he say something to offend her. He didn’t know the right words to describe his feelings for her because it was the first time for him. Not being human, he had no reference point or standards to evaluate and compare what he was feeling for her. And he chose the wrong word “niece.”
c. Love like family love
Dam: I guess that’s what family is like. We may fight all the time but whenever something happens, we support each other. That’s probably why thinking about them makes me feel safe.
Fox: So that’s what family is like.
Dam: You have me. You said I was like your family. I want to be like family to you. Someone who supports you no matter what and makes you feel safe. Even after we take out the Marble.
That night, he mused on what Hyesun told him. She could manage it, but he didn’t handle it well when he had someone special to him.
In a sense, this scene reminded me of Helen Keller’s discovery of sign language for the first time. She wrote in her autobiography:
“As the cool stream gushed over one hand [Anne Sullivan] spelled into the other the word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten–-a thrill of returning thought; and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that ‘w-a-t-e-r’ meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free! There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers that could in time be swept away.”
source: http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/keller/life/life.html
Likewise, Dam would have to become like Anne Sullivan, patiently spelling things out for Mr. Fox until could grasp the real meaning of love.
That’s why he misunderstood her love confession in the previous episode. He couldn’t comprehend what love was since she described it as “soft and hot.” He was too literal and thought she was talking about steamed egg. But now, he was learning that love meant supporting and protecting someone dear to him no matter what.
I’m sure though, that in the spirit of kinship, she’ll be calling him “oppa.”
Awww, thank you.
Yey! It’s Wednesday again! This drama makes me look forward to it. 🙂
I agree, I like the dialogues in this drama especially between Mr Fox and Dam, they are romantic and it makes you ponder.
I was laughing too about the ‘yeah, you were rejected to outer space’.! LOL!
Mr Fox learnt that family takes care of each other, you worry about them and so he’s ready to get the marble baby out of Dam so she wouldn’t get hurt anymore.
I’d like to see him try to take it out.
Dear @Packmule3, please let me add another interpretation of Mr. Fox’s interaction with the Imjin War Lady.
At first he copied what he observed as kindness towards a person who has lost her family (remember that in Confucian texts a woman was supposed to be handed from her father to her husband to be cared later in life by her eldest son – she had no family so her prospects of getting married were grim except for that dashing and foxy warrior that was courting her) while he lent her his marble. For him it was an excuse to fulfill his dream of turning the marble blue and get closer to become a real human. The problem is when his feelings started to become too real and reciprocated… then he faced a dilemma that only time could rectify or destroy:
1.- Marble turns blue, he becomes human and can send a natural human lifespan besides his beloved. BEST SCENARIO.
2.- Marble doesn’t turn red so he extract on time, she forgets him and he has to dissapear from her life. He will remember her for the rest of his existence and his time stops while hers resumes. SAD SCENARIO.
3.- Marble doesn’t turn red, he doesn’t back off in time and she dies. His guilt marks him for lifetimes. WORST SCENARIO.
Regrettably the third one is the one that happened to him. He didn’t know when to stop, because to do so was to let her lose her memories, and therefore her. Mr. Fox did not see Adam Sandler’s “50 First Dates”. He was greedy since he wanted to have his cake and eat it too.
A beautiful realization is the one he has while speaking with Dam about her family: they may fight and sometimes they are not in the same page, but they worry about each other and make sacrifices for each other’s well-being. Then he got that he had a sisterly figure for 700 years right under his nose. It also makes me think that Ms. Fox putting him as POX (plague) might not be a mistake on her part but rather sisterly derision XD … people with siblings may understand 😉 .
I love this show too. @FGB4877 as the Fox’s feeling grow, Dam’s upset over her brother and his friend having their memories erased will weigh heavily on him. (I am not sure he is focused on that yet) She was upset because she said Fox could be erasing their best day (or something like that). We know that falling in love the first time for Dam is going to be her best day or days – something that she would want to remember. I think like her mom her “strong will” will come into play either preventing her from losing her memory so perhaps saving her from the evil gumiho predator.
* or saving her from the evil gumiho ….
You’re right, @FGB4877, Mr Fox 🦊 ended up with worst scenario. He took a chance and lost.
With Lee Dam, he knows the marble can turn blue. He just doesn’t know how to keep it blue. 🙂
I like the brief shoe symbolism there. He gave the Joseon woman a pair of shoes and she lost one shoe when she died. Like reverse Cinderella. He’d better not give Dam a pair of shoes as a gift too. I dislike it when the hero duplicates what he did for a previous lover. That feels like adultery to me. 😂
Thanks for reminding me @agdr03 that I need to post an Open Thread. I’m taking a day off on Thursday. Do you want to do an MRiaG rewatch of Ep 7 with me (if it’s not gory)?
Yes. I like Dam and Mr Fox’s dialogues. I never know what to expect. 😂 One minute, they’re talking about something so romantic then in the next scene, the writer twists it around and makes it comedy gold. I felt her indignation when he told her that she was like a niece to him because his lead-up (comparing her to a “passing rain”) was so poetic. 😂😂
What a fun write up, @PM3. I’m really enjoying the show and discovering these 2 leads.
“You were just a passing shower. But I’m still standing in the rain.” Yes, the poetry… be still, my heart. Fox had it really going good there, I’m totally moved like Lee Dam and then he did the “niece-zone”! WTH? And he looked really earnest and sincere. But this is worse than the steamed egg fiasco. Poor Fox, he has so much to learn about human interaction. He and Dam may fumble and stumble through their relationship and we will have fun watching them.
The mom approved of Fox. She said that Dam has good taste like her dad. Way to toot your own horn indirectly, mom!
I still wonder what Dam meant when she said he was not her type. Maybe her words are still stuck in Fox’s mind hence he was careful to tread on the romance side.
Janey,
I look forward to Mr Fox’s 1001 ways to stun Lee Dam (and us, vicariously) with his misinterpretations and misunderstandings. This is more fun that reading Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “How Do I Love Thee? (Let me count the ways…)” because I don’t see the joke coming.
Yes, he looked so happy and pleased with himself when he said “niece” that we were all thinking WTH, like Dam. 🤦♀️
The mom is weird. I still don’t like the idea of her leaving her kids like that to fend for themselves. What odd parenting.
@GoodTwin – had the same thought on the “strong will” like her mom is a future “cop out” so Dam will retain her memory of Fox when the time comes. Just like the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, the memory in the brain may be erased, but not in the heart.
@FGB – another movie reference on “50 First Dates”. I like that movie! Will the extraction kiss automatically remove the marble and the memory, even if the marble is red or blue?
@pm3 “Live life on your own” Fighting!!🤣🤣🤣
Dear @Agdr03 and @GoodTwin, we are still falling in love (and in misunderstandings XD ). In a past Post I shared that all these misunderstandings are also a Meta of how men and women can mean totally opposite things while saying the very same words =D .
Another thing to discuss is that we humans are heavy cultural products. A cicada comes from the ground, sheds its skin and metamorphizes without external imputs… while we humans have to learn sometimes by observing but also by interacting. Fox sees things as an outsider, but by interacting and getting feedback from an actual human being he is learning in the best way. Also it is said that the best way to learn a language is by getting a Significant One that is native on it. So it will accelerate his transformation.
@Janey, what Fox probably means in the quote you mentioned is that even if time has a different meaning to him as an immortal, his time with her is precious. That is, the time that stopped for him during the Imjin Wars has started to come in due to the unmistakably, unforgettable scent of her presence.
Unforgettable with Nat “King” Cole:
Ohhh I’d like a rewatch, sure, lets! 🙂
Just let me know when you’re ready ok.
I liked the sound effects that they did straight after Mr Fox said she’s like his niece. I was blinking my eyes too, a lot of times. hahahah
Have you any idea who the other gumiho is? I can’t pinpoint anyone yet. I do feel for Sun-woo too. I was laughing as well when his sister said he’d need to be reborn to be a kind human. LOL!
Yes! @Good Twin. What kind of family motto is that?! “Live life on your own”? She might as well have written, “Let’s stay strangers.” 😂😂
I agree about the family motto! I’m irked by it. Family should be omitted from that sentence. LOL.
I mean how old were Dam and her brother when she left them? I’m curious.
I don’t mind Tiger Sunbae Sunwoo after he apologized. He seems sincere. And he’s very careful about touching her since he knows she doesn’t like it. Like grabbing her by her hoodie and her purse strap.
I don’t think he’s the gumiho. He doesn’t know Mr Fox enough to go after Mr Fox’s acquaintances.
@FGB4877, oohhh I love that song, Unforgettable.
So true, in Mr Fox’s mind, Lee Dam is unforgettable. 🙂
The brother said at the airport that they hadn’t seen each other for a year. So if this was the first time she left them, then Dam was a sophomore in college, and her brother was still in high school when she went off to work elsewhere. She made Dam guardian of her younger brother.
Yes, I feel that Tiger Sun-woo has started his ‘transformation’ to a good guy already after he apologized to Dam.
That’s not bad if it’s only been a year then. But to actually leave without even saying hello to her son, I don’t think I can do that. 🙂
@Agdr03, it is my pleasure 😉 . @PackMule3, Dam is “domesticating” two Fabled Beasts at the same time: the titular Gumiho and the mythical Womanizer XD . Both needs different inputs to grow into healthy human beings =D .
Mr. Fox needs someone to care for who he is and understanding enough to let him grow through feedback. Mr. Tiger needs a lesson in Otherness, that is, he is not alone in the Universe and other people not only exists but also have lives as complex as his. Love lets us get out of ourselves and our needs to know existence. His sister told him that to be a better person he had to be born again… but isn’t love a little death and longing al little mourning?.
@PM3 @agfr03 – totally agree on the mom. I’m all for raising independent kids but not like that. That family motto is really weird. Thanks to Fox, Dam and Dan were able to hug and talk to their mom even for a bit.
@FGB – beautiful song. Dam is unforgettable to Fox and vise versa.
Hello!
I really enjoyed this thread and your comments!
I laughed so very much when Mr. Fox said those words to Dam.
He is so naive, but at the same time, so sincere that he is clueless to basic human interactions and relationships.
I am curious about the bad Gumiho. I do hope we will get some answers.
If Dam has a strong mind, then she won’t be hypnotized, like her mom.
I agree with that. 🙂
@FGB4877, I agree that Mr Fox’s Gumiho communication parallels man/woman communication. I laughed when Dam called him ‘Martian’ on a post-it. I loved how chuffed he was to explain his feelings so well and to equate her with being his niece only to see her reaction. He made up for it by saying all of the right things after her blind date.
My personal feelings and musings:
I would like to see Mr Fox be straight with Dam about the marble. About it turning red to blue and what that means for him. Also what happens when the marble comes out – that she won’t remember him. Also that it is damaging to her the longer it stays in. She would be angry with him for withholding information, but they could make a decision together about when it should happen. I get that he wants to protect her and also wants a blue marble.
I think that since it seems to be his last chance, he doesn’t have anything to lose by being honest. She knows he is a Gumiho, after all. I’m surprised she hasn’t done some research on the legends…
Also, if he takes the marble from her, can he return it to her later, before the year is up? If so, would her memory return if she loses it (unlike her mother)?
@Fern,
This is one drama that I’m watching without giving thought to the ending. 😂 I just trust that writer will wrap things well.
But yes, I can see that as one possibility: Mr Fox extracts the marble; he becomes human; Dam forgets him; he tries to make her remember him; she thinks he’s a creepy Ahjussi. 😂😂
Oh, geez,@packmule3. I hope not! Or he shall have to make her fall in love with him all over again. Do you think he could? I rather do. 😈
I like that @Fern, for Mr Fox to make Dam fall in love with him. ☺️ There’s two men who will fight for her. I’m giving Tiger Sunbae a chance. ☺️
Ahm question please. 🙋🏻♀️
We’re rewatching episode 7 on Friday morning my time? Just making sure I’ve got the correct time. 😁
Thanks ☺️
I wouldn’t be heartbroken if Tiger wins out. He is improving all the time. But I especially like the idea of Mr Fox courting Dam. Eventually he could set up his own museum for her to curate.
I can imagine how happy Dam would be at that thought and oh Mr Fox will make sure there’s plenty of food all the time. 😜
@Fern,
That’s my *theory* but there’s no telling where this writer is going with her/his story. I’m just here for the ride.
But if removing the marble means amnesia, then he’s forced to win her heart without that Gumiho spell. And that evens the playing field for Tiger Sunbae Sunwoo. Like you, Tiger guy is appealing to me bec of his personality change. He’s trying, and that matters to me. He gets bonus points. Of course, he’s only Second Male Lead….
@agdr03,
Either Thursday night or Friday morning YOUR time. We can do Ep 7 or 8, whatever that’s been subbed and is interesting. 😂
Thank you! ☺️Got it! Either time works for me. I’ll confirm later today if Thursday night or Friday morning. Look at Dam! 😂

I’ve come to this drama very late, so I will not join the discussion now; I will wait for the re-watch. However, reading through the comments before seeing the episodes is not spoiling things for me. Everyone’s observations are so interesting and perceptive that I am eager to see the unfolding of the action they refer to.
I’m particularly intrigued about Dam’s mother. I feel she has relinquished her parental rights of interference in her childrens’ lives, but apparently not so.
@FGB4877, your most recent comment here was poetic: lovely thoughts, and well put.
@Juriel, I’d say that the mom, on her first opportunity to see her children in a year, took so much of that time to track down Dam’s roommate and grill him as to his intent, does show she’s not living by the motto she’s tried to instill in her children. She waded right into Dam’s personal space to assess and pass judgment on her living situation. That’s certainly not trusting her daughter to manage her life on her own.
The mom’s comment about her husband’s good choice was enigmatic. I interpreted it as her approving Dam’s possibility of marrying into money, perhaps as her husband had latched onto her for her stable job and earnings. Marrying for convenience, as Rosa might say…
I’m late to the party–but am now all caught up and ready to comment! I wasn’t planning to watch this show at first because it was on a streaming service I wasn’t subscribed to at the time (IQIYI) and I also was busy watching other shows. But then, while looking for BOD posts about Bossam, I saw @pm3’s post about the Nietzsche/GGM quotes and I saw that Viki had added the show, so I dug in. In fact, I dug in so hard that I watched all the episodes available on Viki and then went ahead and subscribed to IQIYI because I wanted to watch all the episodes that were out (Viki seems to have a several-days delay).
I’m commenting here because I wanted to follow up on the last comment (above) about the mom. She mentions a reason for her husband to have married her, but the husband never seems to be mentioned in the present tense. The kids say their mom works overseas, not that their parents are overseas. So I assume he has passed away and the mom has had to go off to support the family. Do you think his absence will be explained in the later episodes, or are viewers just to assume he’s out of the picture?
Also I would think that a fashion (journalist?) job would pay well, but Dam seemed to be relieved when Mr. Fox paid her tuition. That, to me, seems to take the family motto too far… Unless her mom had paid the tuition but her using the money from Mr. Fox for tuition would free up more of her bank account for soju and fried chicken!
