Hey, @agdr03 and @Fern,
Given how grim-faced I’ve been these past few weeks, I’m delighted to report to you that the first 7 subbed episodes of this Chinese drama had me grinning from ear to ear.
I’ve decided to add this to my list of fluffy Cdramas to watch.
It ticks the right boxes.
1. A cute and perky heroine, Cheng Liao
Make room for a Rosie Zhao look-alike!
She reminds me of Rosie Zhao’s character in “Dating in the Kitchen” because they both like to cook. I’ve a sneaking suspicion that Cheng Liao’s real talent lies in the kitchen, too. She’s always trying to cook for the hero.
2. A genius GO player, Sheng Jing Chu
Also make room for a Choi Taek clone! He’s soft-spoken, non-aggressive, and mild-mannered.
The GO matches weren’t at all boring to watch. lol. The director used fancy computer animation and martial arts to help us visualize the game.
Like this one.
This meant that the overconfident black player unexpectedly found himself having to fend off the white player’s attacks from three fronts.
3. He has a visual impairment.
No, it isn’t prosopagnosia (face blindness). Because of a childhood trauma, he views the world in black and white. She’s the first person he can see in color, and she was clothed in bright sunny yellow hoodie the first time he clapped eyes on her.
Even in a sea of people, he can spot her because she stands out.
This takes a whole new meaning to falling in love at first sight.
4. The actor is a puppy.
As you know, Niu Junfeng isn’t a handsome actor and he’s still a fashion terrorist. (His stylist should be fired, really.)
But he’s such a puppy here. His character chases her around (like a puppy chases its tail) and he makes himself available to her (like a puppy wanting its tummy scratched).
I didn’t like him in the romcom “Your Highness, Class Monitor” but he’s ten times better here.
Despite his boring looks, he makes amusing puns.
5. What’s the hook?
It isn’t about arranged marriage, but arranged dating. Social media incorrectly outed the famous GO player as secretly dating an unknown press reporter. Instead of issuing a firm denial, he allows the fake news to continue because it gives him an excuse to meet up with her.
He tries to act cool because he doesn’t want to frighten her off. He’s clingy in private but unconcerned and detached on the outside.
6. Too bad, she has a crush on a childhood “oppa.”
I like how he rescues her from public humiliation, and shields her from the unpleasant sight.
It reminded me of Choi Taek’s mad dash to reach Deoksun at the movie theater.
These are drama clichés, but I don’t care because the actors made me grin. On a sad day, like yesterday, I needed this sort of fluff.
The drama is 41 episode long, and only 8 are out on Viki so far. I can vouch for it only up to Episode 8. Hopefully, the rest of the drama will turn out fine.
Anyway, try it and tell me what you think of it. 🙂
@Packmule3, I’ll give it a try! I’ll watch tonight and let you know what I think.
@PM3 – I’m watching it!!! We have another “Dashen” but translated as “Legend”
instead of Lord or Master which is apropos to this Go prodigy. His color perception was reduced to black and white due to a traumatic accident that made him an orphan and the FL literally brings color to his life.
As you mentioned, the FL is very cute and is a dose of sunshine and rainbows and food. His life is also mostly black and white (all
focused on Go game) and being alone but he is slowly being changed with her presence. I like slow burn romance and will continue to watch how the relationship progresses. And I think she has the talent of smell (she knows the smell of ingredients in tea or food) so she may make it as top chef.
My question on confessions- why does it have to be public? Why can’t it be that you tell it to the person directly in private and not on stage with lots of people? A marriage proposal, maybe yes but a love confession, nah! Even if it’s a big gesture and all, I am not a fan of that. I’m glad Legend was able to piece the clues together and save her from embarrassment.
Did you finish it already? I skimmed through a couple of episodes so I’m backtracking.
The public confession was very risky but she thought her Gege (Chinese version of oppa?) was talking about her and she decided to take the first step bec her Gege was afraid of being rejected.
Good thing Dashen had a photographic memory.
I like that scene when female and male leads visited her old school and, while standing at the “Wall,” she mused that she and her Gege were in a weird love triangle/unrequited love. She expressed hope that one day, their unrequited love would notice and tell them “Let’s be together.” 🤪 But what about the male lead? He too would have wished for the same thing: to be noticed by the girl.
This love parallelogram is going to be interesting.
Howdy! I’ll join you, let me just get some good news for my sister’s knee surgery, it just finished but she’s still sleeping so we’re waiting to hear from her. 🙁
I looked at Viki, it’s all there the 8 episodes which is good.
Sounds like a good fluffy drama.
Thanks.
Yes @PM3, done until Ep8 with subs. I need fluff drama @agdr03!
ML is so stoic, high IQ, low EQ type because of the way he grew up. I kinda miss the playful Old Man Yu in Love O2O. I hope his character can become more “normal” and fulfill the challenge of his Go Master to get life experiences and “live”. I also like that ML and FL are becoming friends although I can see that ML is falling already.
It’s interesting that Cdrama is not as “secretive “ about the end game as you can see spoilers in the intro and credit scenes. Looks like we have 2 couples other than the OTP. I can’t see it clearly but I think the sister does not end up with the Xu Chi (she turned him down since she considered him like a cousin! I hope she will not change her mind… Songhwa phobia here!). BTW, this makes YAMG one of a kind because we have 1 main couple only, exes are put to rest immediately and no 2nd/3rd couple distractions.
Kalimera ladies,
I have to add this on my list! I see you are very excited!
I will join you all a bit late after my busy week is over (I have a deadline time meet) 😀 I need some fluff in between that if I can squeeze some.
The episodes are just rolling! It’s now subbed up to e24 and raw until ep29. And the subs come in fast as well. My weekend will be filled with GO fluff!!
I still do not understand how to play Go but as @PM3 has mentioned, the show presents it like a martial arts fight. There was a sequence when the 4th Dan girl fought with a newbie guy (from abroad who wants to be better at Go so he moved back to China) ala Street Fighter style which she won! That was fun! And another fight sequence that I like is when Dashen fought himself (his Korean opponent was copying his moves on the board – which is actually not a violation!) so he has to find a way to defeat himself in order to win. There’s also a “Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon” sequence as Dashen fought Ke (the forever 2nd placer since he always lose to Dashen) in the 10 game Go challenge.
Sorry I’m late but I’m on episode 11. Is there still someone who gives a Ferrari just like that? 😂
I like the cartoon bits too. ☺️
I like that Dashen told CL that her memory of climbing the wall can be replaced by someone else, and right on her birthday too. 👍🏻
