Thanks @pkml3! LOL, yes, are reminder to all who are available to join us! Just jump in and watch and comment along with us!
Truth to tell, I get awfully sleepy at odd times and just nod off, but the party will go on!! π΄ π€€ πͺ π² π¬ π π
Yes my Queen @PM3, thanks for the reminder.
Here! Well I posted on the other thread, so you know it.
Hello everybody!! (γββ½βγ)γ
Hi @WE and @Feifei, I just realised that we didn’t tell @pkml3 that 12.30 UTC is now Paris time 1.30pm instead of 2.30pm. That’s why we had the bit of confusion at our starting time last week.
So that might be why @Feifei thought she forgot the time and missed joining us? We started half an hour earlier than the UTC time.
If we keep to UTC time 12.30, then it’s 1.30pm in Paris. @WE, are you having lunch at that time?
It’s ok for me.
1.30pm
OK then 1.30pm Paris time, 12.30 UTC and 8.30pm SGT. See you in less than an hour’s time.
Back!
haha I am 8.30pm SGT, just finished the Tunisia vs Australia match. I am ready to start.
Let’s go!!! It’s a whole bunch of explanations spread out between flashbacks of previous games. Great for those who need to catch up on the previous episodes.
Where is GB?…. She got wrong with her own time slot? π
I’ll try to note new scenes to watch.
So you can skip the others ones.
GO to 01:00
It’s a cold open to the previous episodes still and then a jump to meeting the organiser of the game.
Of course:
Hi @Feifi, and well come back @GB. π
Hi @Feifei! Was the football match good? Heard that the US one was boring.
OK now we see more of KN’s story and Hasegawa’s interest in observing her because she’s innocent and ‘pure’. He wants to pit her against ‘wolves’ to see if they lower their guard and if she can be corrupted. He’s an evil guy.
The organizer talks about God, I don’t know which God he is referring to… Cain and Abel?
Next new scene (small one) is
13:55
@GB the match, oh Australia’s defence was surprisingly good. Tunisia can’t break through their defence.
@Feifei, yes, strangely Hasegawa refers to Cain and Abel in the Bible. Cain killed Abel out of jealousy and greed. Don’t think he believes in God though.
@Feifei: yes, classic bible.
@WE you skip the scenes, going so fast.
@Feifei, so what was the football score?
So when you see that scenes are just “flashback” of the drama, it means you can skip. After the whole passage here (quit long).
It start again at:
13:55
Not very long, flashback again, then start at:
25:13
@Feifei, skip only the scene that are exactly the same the ones we saw in the drama. They are flashback, or like “special episode content”.
It’s weird they done that, but hey, it’s like that.
@GB Tunisia 0 – Australia 1
@WE, you’re going too fast and are too far ahead!!! I went back to double check on something.
Hasegawa is mistaken that trust and honesty makes KN weak. He says ‘Everyone lets their guard down around the weak.’
This is one embittered, cynical old man. I like that in the beginning we see another embittered and cynical old man, the middle school teacher. Here we see another one. What KN did to change the first old man… can she do for this one at the end of the series? (Love the bookending!!)
@GB, no I don’t watch, I just note the timecode.
So you already get them when you ended the new scenes. π
@WE yes I get you now, they are repeated scenes we have watched before.
The game master look like a kind a corrupted big boss, having companies scamming people, a bit mafiosi.
@WE, the game master, Hasegawa is just toying with people, destroying lives, observing to double confirm his cynical view of people.
We see that Yokoya and the ex-police officer are in cahoots behind Hasegawa’s back. So what is it that they did? Was it just that they got AS to join the game and to hopefully destroy the Liar Game like he had destroyed the pyramid scheme?
As I’m doing some scouting, I’ll note beginning and ending.
So
13:55 – 14:50
25:13 – 26:13
@GB, yeah, you get it.
Certainly he want to confirm his point of view, humans are corrupted since the dawn of mankind, so the reference to the bible, like it’s a godly opinion.
Well it’s rather
25:13 – 29:25
Thanks @WE… I do jump but I also do stop and watch in between. The editing here is good enough so that we might have missed most of the earlier episodes and still gotten a good gist of the plot and flow.
@Feifei, if I watch football, I want there to be at least 3 goals scored LOL. Just watching it moved from end to end of the field without success seems such a waste of time to me. π
The game master wanted KN in the game but Yokoya wanted Akiyama in the game. I think Yokoya wanted to destroy Akiyama because Akiyama spoiled his scamming scheme?
@WE, yes, that’s a good point. Hasegawa thought of himself as some kind of ‘god’ playing with real people like they are pieces on his Go board game. I notice chess knights as the symbol for the players though in the Minority Rule game.
@GB: I understand now why there are these flashback.
I think it’s worth it to just look a bit (no need to watch all).
The flashback are:
Each time the cold woman go to see the game master, she tell him what hapenned in the game, so it’s why we see that again, for the temporal continuity.
@GB there were attempts but did not make it to goals. We can’t predict the number of goals though, I wish I could.
@Feifei: yes, yokoya want revenge.
Later it’s said: the gamemaster gave him the scamming company.
But Yokoya prepare this revenge without the gamemaster know it.
@Feifei, yes that was the objective of Yokoya. It’s interesting that the different reasons for getting the players in synchronised. Hasegawa wanted KN in the game because she intrigued him. Eri wanted KN in the game to act as bait to bring AS in, to give the others a different way of thinking and to make a point with Hasegawa.
KN had the answer all along, on how to not be in debt to the LGT, but no one would cooperate with her for a long time.
Getting the mushroom head guy in the game was also part of the plan.
@Feifei, yup, the best joke was that Mushroom guy never knew he’d been scammed into joining the game. He was really one heck of a deceitful guy, over and over again, despite KN being good to him. He was the hardest nut to crack.
@GB, no one had the will to go all the way with KN although they kind of understand her game plan.
Yeah, mushroom is the “little gift” from gamemaster.
Before he’s happy “she’s not different from other”.
Then there is a little flashback with voice-over from the cold woman. (we guess she tell it to the gamemaster)
Look at what is Fukunaga job.
Quite funny. ^^
@WE, yes, you are probably right. Each time Eri reported to Hasegawa, we see a lot of the flashback. However there are some parts that’s puzzling about how she might know since she was not always watching AS and KN interacting.
OK I’ve come to the end of Ep 11. How about you and @Feifei?
EP 12 start with the game master..
@Feifei, yeah, everyone was still looking out for only themselves. No one could take the risk to be self-sacrificing the way KN could. That was her greatest strength but it was hidden behind or labelled wrongly as her weakness. She was always called stupidly honest but she was wisely honest, principled and others-oriented.
@GB, yes finished Ep11.
He start to paint something.
Humans, their true nature, and it’s hell.
Cold woman what to bring back Noa (for personal reason). She has a goal.
@WE I noticed that only Ep 12 (and 13) start with the music and opening credits. All others are cold opens.\
This time Hasegawa is playing chess on a board, while he leaves the players to the real life chess game… just like his painting is of real humans as he sees them. A pessimistic view of people.
game master talk to the game manager (clown face).
We learn in fact this old guy isn’t the “game master” (hahaha), there is an organisation. It’s the liar-game organisation. Maybe some other rich guys pay for it too.
Many new scenes and backstory in this episode start.
No it’s golden teeth story.
Who is the game master talking to in the TV? I wonder who is that man.
@WE, Hasegawa is one of the main organisers of the game and he has a hold over the ones working in the LGT, even over the Dealer in the mask. He can break the rules if he wants. They are forced to obey him for some reason, to pay back for something they got from him, etc.
cold woman: satisfy all your desires is just the path to auto-destruction.
Some wisdom during the way. π
@WE just saw your comment, the clown face. Yes seems like a liar game organization is in play.
Then golden teeth tell to Noa the backstory of Akyama.
(I don’t remember if it’s a new scene, look like)
@Feifei, there are are few Dealers of the game working in the LGT. They all hide behind horrible looking masks.
10:23
New scene, Akyama meet a bum.
@WE, yes, now we finally get to know how Officer Tanimura got involved and lost a tooth even! Took me a while to notice his bleeding mouth. He began as an honest cop.
So he’s also another cynical one that maybe Eri wants KN’s goodness to work on.
@WE, I notice that the outside scenes are so devoid of colour. So white and little contrast. Inside the game the colours are so lurid. In the backstories, the colour is wood toned and dark. KN’s home and clothes colours are bright, candy ones.
Oh yeah thanks.
So cold woman is ERI ?!
(I should have know that before, damn it, I rewatched the whole thing at least 10 times).
Next backstroy : ETO.
There is almost no flashback scenes until now.
We are reminded once again of AS’s backstory. And we see him investigating the objectives of LGT. He wants to know why they involve the innocent (like his mother) in their game. The homeless man says the LGT enjoy watching them suffer. But they are treating the players’ wins and losses like a spectator sport.
Fukunaga show! lying, saying he want redemption.
Then lying again to ETO about minimushroom.
Even take the last bill he put in his pocket.
AHAHAA.
Akiyama speaks to a homeless man. Homeless man says to quit the game because the end is hell. The game master mentioned that he is painting something that is worse than hell?
18:40 : it goes full flashback until 27:25
(last words are important for transition with the old guy at 28:00)
Look like I’m a bit ahead. I’ll slow down and continue scouting. π
@WE Fukunaga is the most deplorable of the lot.
The homeless man says to stop playing their game because ‘hell’ lay ahead. “If you want a dignified death, don’t play their game anymore.” But what AS and KN chose to do was to continue in the game and to change it from within, rather than give up like the homeless man. So many cynical men in this show.
@Feifei, yes, good catch – the game master was painting his version of real humans and he thought it was worse than hell, but he himself was playing god in getting innocent players to be trapped in the Liar Game and end up in hell/debt.
30:40 to 39:30 are flashback.
But it’s worth it to watch the last flashback scenes. New music and I’m not even sure the editing was the same during the previous episode. Quite intense.
It’s interesting that not only do they want characters like Fukunaga, but also Eto. They came personally to deliver the invitations to Liar Game.
People never seem to learn that Fukunaga cannot be trusted. LOL the view of Hong Kong with a circle of mushroom heads and Mini-Mushroom in chains.
Cynical: “make all people happy? ahahahaaaa”..
Karma: cardiac arrest! π
Eri calls Mushroom head’s minimushroom story a bluff, the debts are collected only after a winner is determined. I heard the crow in the background.
LOL @WE, yeah that horrible old man caused his own heart attack by disbelieving that there’s a way for all to be ‘happy’.
@GB: this scene give us an important information: he’s slow dying. He don’t have much time next on this world.
So, I guess you also guess the setup and what is doing ERI. π
The game master has a very warp view of humankind. So depressing he only makes himself unhappy and create this liar game to make himself feel less guilty betraying people.
39:30… the philosophical dialogue is great.
We ask ourselves how can ERI stands and can face and defy the old man, but at…
43:05 Big revelation!!!! π π π
So… since the beginning of the drama, we have ERI, this mysterious cold woman. She’s mostly here, unreadable. We guess she hides something, but she never do many things, just small touch.
Wonderfull character, script wise.
She has a goal, an huge goal.
Really beautiful story, and the conclusion in episode 13 will be high feeling.
Eri is the game master’s daughter, but she wants revenge on him?
@WE it’s very hard to stop at Ep 12. Eps 11 and 12 have set up so much for Ep 13, that it seems wrong to stop at Ep 12.
This drama moves fast, sometimes I cannot follow. Its my first Jdrama though. The sound effects, colours and dialogues are all so new to me. I may have to watch a few times to fully get it.
@Feifei, yeah, this make me realise how good the goal of the characters are because none of them will really get what they want, but rather what they need in the end.
@GB, do you want to end the drama now?
@Feifei: it’s not an ordinary jdrama. It’s even an unique masterpiece very far from anything ever done. π
@WE, we should stick to the schedule and end it next week.
After all the game playing these episodes with backstory seems so much calmer. Yes, everyone changed from their original objectives or were thwarted by the simple honesty of one girl. As you say, they probably received what they needed.
The deepl translator is now in the web browser, I just realized. This means I can type my texts in French and translate them instantly.
Example with this sentence, which should be written more or less correctly. But I hesitate. Maybe I’m making progress in English by writing in English? Even badly?
@GB, look, we spend 1h30 here.
So, ok last episode next week!
@WE, your English will probably be better if you write in English (and practise speaking it/thinking in it). Using the translator will be faster but less beneficial otherwise. I find your writing quite understandable as it is. π
I noticed that the last ep (Ep 13) requires a lot of watching/listening to the dialogue. A lot more explanation. I need to be alert!
So I keep writing in english, yooooo.
But sometimes I could get a translation of an expression if I really need.
Exemple: Peau de lΓ©opard.
Impossible to know what it is in french because it’s not a common animal like cat or dog.
Then I translate:
Leopard skin.
Ooopps, LΓ©opard in french is just Leopard in english.
lolololol. How could I know?!!
Well thanks for your company @WE and @Feifei. It was more fun with live commenting.
I’ll ask around about the Memories of the Alhambra (MOTA) Rewatch Party. @Feifei, Would you be able and interested to join a MOTA rewatch in January next year?
@GB, But we forgot something!
What about season 2 and Final stage before MOTA ?
Also Feifei could have time to watch full season 1 by herself before.
@WE, so the question is do we want to continue with Liar Game Season 2 and the ending in the movie Final Stage or take a break and come back to Liar Game2 after MOTA?
Season 2 should be 5 weeks, and Final stage 1 week if we watch it fully in one go.
Season 2 is: first episode is one hour.
All other 45 minutes, so let’s say 1h30 rewatch with two of them.
@WE I can understand your English and I like to read your post, so distinctly you.
@GB, we can do ep 13 next week so that I can have some time to pre-watch for re-watch.
It’s rather: start to rewatch before christmas (3 week)
then end it after (3 week)
And go on MOTA.
@Feifei and @WE… Questions:
1)Do you want to complete all of Liar Game before MOTA?
2)Do you want to continue rewatch immediately after next week or in January?
No no I’m wrong. Episode 13 is on 3/12
So it make only 2 week before christmas.
If we do nothing, it means after 3/12, there is no rewatch until 7/1
Well, it looks nice also, a rewatch break of one month is ok for me.
I’ll need some time for other things.
So MOTA then LiarGame2 after is ok.
@GB, I am ok for MOTA (can’t remember much of MOTA except that I like it and the virtual game setting) or liar game season 2 but I will need to do a first watch of season 2.
Yeah so: let’s make a break, so Feifei have all the time to watch anything.
@GB are here for 10 minutes, the time to speak about a thing?
@WE
Yes, if we take a break, we will start on 7/1.
I suggested a break in case others might like to join in (MOTA more likely than Liar Game) but could not spare the time near Christmas/New Year.
HOWEVER, if we are continuing immediately with Liar Game2, then no break is necessary since we are the only ones watching and we seem to be okay with continuing – yes???
@GB, I only have 1st week of Dec available then it will be after Christmas. MOTA will be good coz I will be visiting Alhambra haha.
@Feifei, it’s awesome. Please take photo of the places used in the drama!!
@WE, okay… you want to chat here or on MDL?
@Feifei, okay we’ll take a break, continue with MOTA and then come back to Liar Game Season 2 after MOTA. That will give you time to watch a first round of LG2.
@Feifei, are you really going to Alhambra? Wow!
@WE, yeap I am looking forward to visiting those places in the drama. So I guess we will be taking a break since 1 week is too short to complete season 2?
@Feifei, Season 2 has 9 episodes and a final movie called Final Stage. Unless you have time to binge watch while making notes to remember stuff. I can’t catch much detail if I binge quickly.
@GB, well it’s quick, so here is ok.
I explain: I wasn’t using twitter, but recently I poster a bit here.
You can see my wonderfull profile:
https://twitter.com/EnchanteurW
It’s way I could use in the future to meet people interested by my screenplay. There are also screenwriters here and now I think it’s a better place than reddit.
I was wondering if it was ok to post there and attract some people who could be interested in the rewatch.
By the way, a twitter accoung on twitter could be also nice for BOD, just to get a minimal visibility.
@GB, I will try to do a first watch of Season2 and yes make notes is not an issue. The issue is understanding my notes after.
@WE, you are such a W2W fan.
Hah! I don’t use my Twitter account. I try to use a minimum of social media as they are time consuming and I can’t check everything all the time.
Well I could see your memes. You certainly did a lot of work for TK: Eternal Monarch!
I don’t know if you read some of @pkml3’s posts. She has mentioned that she has set up some ‘rules’ for WordPress to follow and not just any post can get passed to be displayed here. Also anyone who breaks BOD rules can be banned. So, while we can invite people over through Twitter, etc, again they may not be able to get in or stay in BOD depending on what they write.
I’m not sure that @pkml3 wants greater visibility or minimal visibility. She was even thinking that if the blog gets too annoying, she might shift. A whole bunch of us want to shift along with her but her next outing may not be in the area of dramas.
I feel that you can go ahead to invite like-minded viewers to join in for the rewatch. Have you met any likely person on Twitter?
@GB, yes I see, I won’t try to make annoucements so.
I did a little one on MDL but it’s hidden in the drama comments and as it’s old drama, no one go there.
Anyway, we can’t post text from MDL elsewhere, so I give just a link. When someone want to see W screenplay or ask for explications, I say them to read the rewatch thread. But there isn’t many people.
I didn’t meet anyone yet on twitter, I’m a bit new, but it can go very fast as I got some follow and doing follow myself. But I don’t really speak with these people for now.
I found this amazing screenwriter Scott Meyers who’s advices are pure gold. But I don’t talk really with him I guess he’s busy with his life and anyway, there is not point to really speak with him. Else, any screenwriter would ask him for feedback.
I also found Song Jae Jung account, lol! But she don’t use it. And she just posted once a weird message, looking like a advertisement chain. I suppose it’s here and not a fake account but I didn’t tried to write to her. So I don’t know. There is her name, and her account alias is the same that the one she used when she poster her W script on a korean website. So I think it’s probably not a fake account.
It would be great to be able to ask SJJ about what was in her mind over certain parts of the show, assuming she herself can remember!
OK, to confirm.
1) We take a break from 10 Dec 2022 (4 weeks break)
2) Return to rewatch MOTA on 7 Jan 2023
3) Rewatch Liar Game 2 after MOTA rewatch
If this sounds ok I’ll ask around.
I high five one in your proposition. π
OK @WE, I take it that you’re in agreement with all the points. I’ll mention the rewatch and see if there are any other takers. You can do the same. π
I’m in agreement. I signed the contract. A little fast. I hope there wasn’t any small print at the bottom. I might have made a mistake. Especially on a liar-game topic. How am I gonna get cheated?
Don’t think it’s cheating but maybe punishment for not reading the fine print? Woe to you @WE, you’re be stuck with me for many weeks!
@GB, agree to take a break for 4 weeks from 10 Dec and return on 7 Jan for MOTA and Liar thereafter.
Great @Feifei!! Then we can consider that we’re basically all set.
@pkml3, if you see this, please note that we hope to do a Rewatch of Memories of the Alhambra starting 7 January 2023!! Please open a thread for us then. I’ll give you the details later.
