Enjoy the rewatch.
Thanks my dear @pkml3 for remembering to schedule this thread!
For a show that seemed so deliberately ‘artificial’ in style, lighting, acting… it packed a punch in showcasing real values.
This ‘manga-in-moving-images’ was so much more satisfying the 2nd time around.
Hi GB!
I guess it was low budget, so they had to make something with what the have.
But it’s not rare, there are movies like that, low budget and masterpieces.
Primer, about 7000$ budget. Or Cube, a bit more budget but not much.
And now, I guess it explain why episode 11 and 12 had so many flashbacks. Then you need the budget only for the new content.
If I compare that with a big budget serie, I could mention “The Walking Dead”.
Even with a better budget, they sell X episodes. Let’s say around 20 episodes in a season. Then the budget isn’t enough. So they make expensive episodes with lot of CGI or special effects, zombies, gunfight, etc at the start of the season, then at the end (season cliffhanger) and something nice in the middle. Else, there are countless empty episodes, boring, fillers. With just 2 or 3 characters, talking, depressed, etc. Not a funny thing to write for the screenwriters. They have to do something with little.
Hi @WE, yes, this show smacked of little budget. I went to read the user reviews. It did not seem to bother viewers. I feel it brought its point across and kept to its origins well enough. It was really a manga brought to life.
It’s about time to start…
I hope @Feifei remembers… even @pkml3 was watching enough so that if she could, she might join in.
Let’s start NOW!!! For once we have the opening credits, really at the opening!
ok I launch!
It starts with the credit and the pretty face of the actress. 🙂
This is the episode of surprising cross and double cross and double cross again and triple cross LOL. It got really interesting and unpredictable.
Heyyyyyy
There was a plan in the plan in the plan.
Akiyama played with yokoya.
@GB yes I just remembered the time…
Hi @Feifei! Great!
This episode we have actors acting like they are acting and more than one and so on. So mind boggling. LOL
I’m lost in the schemes.
Ahhhh, this drama needs a binge watch.
I don’t understand anymore what happens.
lololol
After 12 rewatchs. T T
@Feifei, hello and welcome!! B
Hah they lied and relied until we are lost.
Cards came and went and I didn’t know how much money was supposed to be where. But it was fun to watch it all unfold. Twist upon twist.
It’s amazing how the players can understand the rules enough to know how to get around them and manipulate the game to their advantage. Of course AS used psychology well. He knew that Yokoya would keep doubting him no matter what.
Nao understand all this mess better than me. Now she play on that to make all people happy with a fair money score. T T
Too many twist in the game plan. I am a bit lost.
@Feifei, are you at the part where the unthinkable takes place? Nao chooses to threaten to make her team lose unless AS agrees to make the teams draw.
BAKA!!! 🙂
@GB yes, she wants to make her team lose.
In the end, Nao also used psychology. She knew that AS would not stand still if the team lost. She was taking a great risk though.
Yokoya is touched by Nao words ? 🙂
@Feifei, now she wants to bring about righting the wrong that was done to AS and his mother. She’s amazingly simple in that way… if you do wrong, apologise. But her way is actually the right way. Doing what is right does not need to be complicated.
@WE Yokoya is a fantastic actor. He is so convincing. That’s how he can deceive so well.
End of the little emotional music.
Naive Nao smiling.
And…
AAAHHH…
Cards exchange…
AAAAA
“I trust you, yokoya”
This YoKoya, pretending to be touched?
Yokoya was surprised that he needed saving too. It never occurred to him. But again Nao is right. He admits it. But does he believe his own words?
LOL
Yokoya san?
The red of the Fire Country lighting makes the room so dangerous looking.
Nice music. Nice smiles. And now the negotiation for the card.
Omg how can she trust Yokoya San?
@Feifei, just watch a few more minutes and you’ll know. He’s so convincing. Nao really wants to believe him and she trusts easily. Nice smiles all around.
This crazy writer made all this uterly complicated things without any error. And anyway, no one would look for errors, lolllll.
So many lies within lies. They must have complicated brains.
It’s just a matter now of who is telling the truth and who is deceiving.
However when they explain their strategy, they are so proud of themselves, they tell the truth.
Liar game is the ultimate mind-game story.
No one watch that except nerds or drama fans. 🙂
@Feifei, I admire the Writer and the convolutedness of the deceptions.
@WE I’m a crazy drama fan and nerdy about dramas LOL.
@GB, well, I can guess when you ask a MOTA rewatch. 🙂
@Feifei, always the bad guys turn to threat and blackmail… now it’s a choice to sacrifice the strangers because of a threat towards the one most to be protected.
This damn episode is crazy about twists, it never stops.
Ahhahahha credit cards are damaged.
Arrogant Akiyama comes in:
“I ask them to change the cards”. LOLLlllll
I really didn’t quite get the MOTA game logic the first time. I’m actually trying on my own now… I figures out something on my own so Yay! I will also read what @pkml3 wrote. I noticed she wrote a lot about the game but there were very few comments.
Pity you were not watching and at that time.
++++ another bad new for Yokoya.
It’s like tennis or ping pong… ball goes back and forth across the court or table. I kind of dislike the mad laughter.
At least AS’s laughter is quiet. Not the wild manga mad laughter.
What Yokoya can do with his cards and the bank, AS can also. Yokoya forgot that.
@GB, I was watching it live!! On soompi.
And I don’t remember when, but packmule came on Soompi and posted a link to BOD.
It’s since this time I jumped on BOD.
But probably it was too late to post on MOTA, as I was on Soompi too.
On the long time, Nao strategy pay.
Everyone know they can trust her.
They keep zooming into the players’ faces, hehe I find that so comic like.
@WE, yes, I saw that she kept mentioning posting at Soompi on the BoD threads. So I knew it was going out on both sites.
Hah! a surprise return of Tsuchida… so all the money in his card goes back to him. Actually on the Bank Accounts board, Yokoya is supposed to still have 390million 40K yen. Where did that money go to in the end? How did it get redistributed to everyone?
Twist again.
The two bad guys togethers.
@Feifei, yes the face closeups bothered me before but since it’s supposed to imitate the manga, it looks ‘right’. LOL.
Oh yes, they are all going with Nao san’s plan. err except maybe the mushroom head.
@WE, the people start celebrating too soon. There’s still more to come to worry about.
Also Nao is not satisfied if someone has to bear a debt.
First time Akiyama get owned. Whhha
The better part of all players comes out. Seeing that their fellow player is drowning in debt, they tear up their contracts with AS so that everyone can work to bring about a draw.
@WE, yes, in the long-term, Nao’s consistent truthfulness and trust paid off. They went with her way.
Flashback, Noa speak with echo.
Almost a priest. 🙂
And suddenly
DOUBT IDJOKE
huh?
Mushroom is an unknown quantity. Normally he would never hesitate to take all for himself and laugh at everyone’s ruin.
@WE Yeah, this is the Liar Game, what’s wrong about lying to Yokoya?
Fukunaga wasn’t agree that Akiyama solve all alone.
He wanted to be the one who win.
silent bye bye.
I love this character. 🙂
Yokoya
most insane breakdown of the season
and it’s not over yet
Mushroom head betrayed them all again? He never change like Nao never learns.
@WE, Fukunaga is too annoying LOL. I hate his high pitch laugh and taunts when people are already down.
@GB, I like anoying character.
Nothing as good than a toxic and anoying SFL or SML in a drama. 🙂
Lot of fun.
What I dislike are BORING characters. 🙂
@Feifei, that’s the beauty of it. Nao refuses to become corrupted like the rest of them. She did learn to lie in the card game in the previous episodes, but then she turned it all around by using the money to control the game and make everyone win.
She made it possible for everyone to leave the game happy. This is the phrase that got to Fukunaga (Mushroom)
Yokoya GO TO HELL
save me, forgive me, I implore
Here the final breakdown coming
Biblical music.
@WE, They are the necessary plot movers and conflict producers.
Yokoya choose to TRUST (first time in his life)
lol
so painfull to open the box
slow motion x 5
I loved how they laughed like hyenas and Mushroom immediately did a Doubt 100million. Yokoya just went ‘Huh?’ LOLOL.
He taunts with clairvoyance phrase. What’s wrong with deceiving you? LOL.
Akiyama quit, go in the LIGHT
Yokoya final breakdown, when his heart is touched.
So fukin good crying scene. Final breakdown.
The goodness of Nao has rubbed off even on Mushroom.
Now the final twist of twists… Nao is willing to give up her 100million to save both AS and Yokoya, and wisely she leaves it up to AS to choose to save both of them or not. Only if he does it himself, does the seeking revenge end.
Akyama embarassed to show his heart when Nao welcome him. Damn it’s so good.
Revenge don’t peace the hearts.
Now, the cold lady come in.
The final scene so moving…
@WE Everyone watches with baited breath… so seriously.
So much tension.
AS always told the truth in this episode.
Yokoya has to choose to believe him.
Did they just help Yokoya with the 100mil? Because Nao san does not want him to be in debt?
First time Akyama show a real feeling
@Feifei, yes. They gave Yokoya the chance to get his 100million at least but only if he trusted AS for a change.
It is a draw game for everyone in the end.
Finally everyone is smiling. Such a relief. The way they sit changes. They are relaxed, leaning back. Everyone at peace at last. This is what Nao wanted all along from the beginning of every game. She finally had them on her team to play along with her so that no one lost and everyone was saved.
“she saved me”.
This world is like the liar game
@Feifei, yes it all a draw but everyone wins. They have no debt from this game. I like all the approving smiles… no more horrid laughter. Surprisingly, the ones saved also included the fake policeman agent with the gold tooth.
Then…
The painting.
GOSH!!!!!
An angel flying over the hell.
… over the world.
In a unexpected way they get what they need.
The father get his answer, ready for death.
The daughter find that her goal wasn’t revenge but let her father die with peace of mind.
Shit, this scene make me cry each time.
Why did the game master says that he is saved by Nao San?
Finally AS gets his wish. Eri comes to bring AS to meet her father, the organiser of the horrible Liar game and he was also involved in the pyramid scheme. this is a fitting ending. We are not left hanging because AS gets his resolution.
I like AS expression as he looks at the old man.
I find the reason for the game so insufficient… just to prove that even Nao could be corrupted. But she proved him wrong.
The one truly beautiful thing.
The old man was dying without hope in humanity. His painting was at first a terrible perspective of the evil of humanity without any salvation. But Nao’s goodness saved him from this depression and loss of hope. His painting was changed. He would die with hope in mankind.
@Feifei
Because all is life, I believed human nature is bad. He couldn’t believe than Nao would remain pure. But she did.
He understand he was wrong all his life. A dry heart. And now, he haves a living heart, and can die peacefully.
I like his last sentence “Seems fine” , oh but looks like it is not over yet.
Damn, sorry, I re read and my english is crazy bad.
Eri was carefully pulling the strings all the time, bringing in Nao for her own reasons and finding that in the end Nao’s goodness transcended even those so that her reasons became a higher, better good.
The painting of humanity looking up into the light, at the angel with wings… and the prospect of maybe they too being able to sprout wings and leave the hole.
@Feifei, I like how this series is totally devoid of romance. Just good collaboration and trust.
Then we get the preview for Season 2.
@WE… really? I found your English totally understandable LOL. I can’t write French to save my life, although my name is spelt the French way. Good joke, that.
@WE, your English is fine. Thanks for the explanation and @GB too.
@Feifei, remember to come back for the MOTA rewatch!!! I’m still hoping for more people to join us. If you read the thread which is up to advertise the party, you’ll see that there are 5 of us, but if things change along the way, there may be only the 3 of us.
A lot of redemption arcs.
Nao heart-washing effect. 🙂
Thanks for being with us on this Rewatch @Feifei. Keep coming back to check on all the threads. On and off we have rewatches that get announced, because I’m a crazy Drama Bitch and I keep asking for more rewatches LOL.
Yes, this is the kind of show whose ending makes all the weird stuff worthwhile. Another ‘healing’ drama.
I have finished 1 round of MOTA, hopefully more will join the re-watch. MOTA is such a good drama, the gaming world though I am not a gamer.
@Feifei, there are also Chinese drama rewatches. We may consider a mini rewatch with @Kate for You Are My Hero.
Before this we had Reset and Love Between Fairy and Devil.
Even is you don’t sit in while live watching, you can come back to add comments at any time as you do a rewatch at your own time.
This drama is very accurate to life.
Just a story: when I was younger, I was often betrayed. But I often chose to trust people and be friendly. And over the time, it’s like to be a pillar, someone you can trust.
A guy was mocking me for a long time. But one day, it changed. This guy had a complicated situation, with an harsh father. And one day we became friends.
@Feifei, yeah, I’m not a gamer too, but I learnt stuff about gaming through MOTA and reading the threads here. In a way, watching dramas is another form of gaming. We get sucked into a virtual world for a while, but we can’t control the action, only our response in our comments. 🙂
@WE, thanks for sharing your story. Yes, I believe in Nao’s way also. No hidden agendas…just act so that everyone can have peace.
MOTA game is quite an accurate one if I compare with this kind of game.
Only, the game is very simple. While playing diablo (a game where you level up and loot stuff), it’s more complex. But I’m ok to get a simple game in the drama.
It’s quite realistic: mostly a simple game would work as a “game for everyone” and with an augmented reality concept.
I am so hungry now, I am going to grab something to fill my stomach. I will see you guys in the MOTA re-watch. Cheers!
That’s why I said what I did in the first comment. This was a show that looked so artificial but it was about real values, about choice and having the power to save others and oneself. Nao showed the way by choosing to sacrifice herself over and over again. In the end those who taunted her became her friends.
Bye @Feifei!
Sorry for the interruption.
But does anybody recall what episode the topic on sadism/masochism came up? She didn’t know what those two words meant? I think it was during the Minority Game??
Thanks.
@GB, if you read some critics about the drama, certainly you found that:
“Nao is a so annoying character, she has no purpose in the drama, Akyiama solve all”.
But when we dig deeper, the two characters are equaly worth it.
I found the game in MOTA to involve too much endless killing. Just more and more enemies to kill. Just have to become stronger and faster to get them all before being killed. Seemed like a meaningless thing.
Show gave it meaning because at the end of the quest was the real quest to find Se Ju.
Sheesh @pkml3, you’ve finished the whole series? I can’t recall sadism or masochism… well maybe yes. I didn’t make notes so don’t know where it turned up.
Are you writing your analysis of this show?
@WE, yes both Nao and AS were critical. They had to play off against each other, in a sense so that we can see how much each contributed. Without AS, Nao would not have been able to come up with the plans to save herself in the other games and then to save others.
@pm3, yes it’s during the minority vote game.
Episode 4, 02:45
Trust @WE to have everything meticulously recorded LOL.
@GB, it’s exactly what are these kind of game: kill mobs and boss, get XP, loot stuff. Just that. Countless games like that. Ahahaha.
@GB I am still loitering here. Yup come to think of it, there really are too many killings in MOTA. I will try to join the other re-watches if there are dramas that may interest me.
@WE, me too thinks that Akiyama solves all but the ultimate solution is solved by Nao San. For all to be winners.
I just rewatched Ep 4 sadists and masochists and laughed at Nao and AS. LOL she says she is a sadist.
Yeah the games get tiresome. I prefer brain games, how to connect the dots, how to make a shape etc.
Yes. I finished Season 1.
Yes. I’m writing my analysis so I can’t join you on the rewatch.
I’ve a small window of time to finish writing this morning before heading out. 🙂
Thanks, @WEnchanteur. You’re goooood.
Well MOTA have a simple game.
But we know that like most of SJJ dramas… The whole drama is a complicated game.
🙂
@Feifei, I found it amazing that the very innocent, naive and somewhat ignorant girl could master it enough to control the game. She was quietly observing and thinking about how to ‘win’ within the rules, without anyone losing. That was pretty smart.
@pm3, ‘nothing, ask for timecode when you want. 😉
I hope you liked the drama, very brain stimulating.
While we can say that Life is like a Liar Game, I’m not sure we can say the same for MOTA. There are many alternative actions we can take besides kill enemies, form alliances and fight.
GB

say the line…
Nao “CONTROL THE GAME”. 😂
@WE After paying so much attention to W-Two Worlds, I see so much of the same pattern of story-telling in MOTA. Same kind of cuts to scenes and voiceovers and even the type of music. The director is also the same?
@WE, Bart Simpson was the most surprised. Heh!
GB
No it’s a different director. More cold and realistic one. (stranger one)
Yes, I think we can easely recognize SJJ style.
Even in Yumi Cells.
With her temporal orderer mess, with flashbacks.
Just in MOTA, she also put a Flashforward at episode 2 ending. 🙂
GB
But many musicians are the same, yes.
I made a list (lost somewhere), the musician team changed just a bit.
A few news guys, and a few quiting.
The pieces are very good, but different style. Big music, when W was more 80′ sounds, like DX7 synth or cristal clear electric guitar with echo/delay.
I found the non-linear storytelling a bit of a surprise at first. Had to get used to it. Are we in the future or the past? It all felt like ‘now’.
I’m watching dorama First Love now, and it’s crazy how many times we flashback and forth. First episode didn’t know when it was for some scenes. But should be ok from Second ep onwards.
Thanks for the fun rewatch @WE. Catch you on MDL or anywhere on BOD.
Yeah, have a good day everybody!! B
