As I rewatched many times, I was more focused on games than any deeper meaning in the story. But let’s see if we find something about that. The season introduce a new villain who I find even more interesting than Yokoya.
Thank you for this post. I hope to be able to join you.
Thanks for the early Notice Thread @pkml3!!
I’m glad to see you here already @Fern and @WE. Yes, it would be lovely to have more of us on the thread exclaiming about the over-the-top-ness that is Liar Game (both Seasons were OTT). I do not know whether to laugh or cringe or just shut my eyes and ears at times.
Yes @WE, let’s see if we can garner more from it than just that a game is being played.
By the way, the time for the Rewatch will be Saturdays at:
6:30am PST
9:30am EST
2.30pm in London
3.30pm in Paris
4.30pm in Athens

I hope many more BODers can join us! π
To better get this crazy “manga” feeling in the show, I post here a 2 minutes excerpt of the anime “Kaiji”. What is a story as good as Liar Game. The best anime about gambling. Some scenes were copied a lot in the drama “Squid game”, but without the so powerful way of the anime.
Here you see extra features, lighting, close-up on faces, specials effects:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HGEHRZoOJ0
The kind of things we get also in the drama Liar Game, just made more weird as it’s a drama and not an anime. But what gives to it a fun visual identity.
I see that this thread has been unburied and moved up to the top of the list of Recent Posts. Thanks @pkml3!!! You’re really on the ball here.
There is a reason for the apples in the emojis and it’s still so swelteringly hot, even at night, I had to add ice-cream and a cold drink into the emoji border. π

Hi, see you soon. π
@WE See you in 7 hours! I did my own rewatch of Ep 1 and some of Ep 2.
I come early. Was on writing but slow. Just 1/10 of episode revision. Complicated. Not sure about structure of episodes 34 to 36. And could be just 34/35 if I cut content. I have the bad feeling I won’t get that correct. I’ve redone outline of episodes 32 to 35 but was wrong. Finally ep32 and ep33 wasn’t shortened because as I removed some content, I added some too. Important one, what I was dreaming to do because I was aware the situation wasn’t enough tense, or clear, or it needed more time. Couldn’t put more time unless I have something really important to add. And BINGO, previous week I could have the idea of the important thing to add. Now it’s done, all my time structure is broken. It was so long to rewrite so intense are the scenes. I had to be so deep in it. Really I suffered here, as weird it is, because I always say screenwriting is a pleasure and we should just relax. But I already know it’s wrong because many time that damn story made me suffer. STOP OF THE OUTOFCONTEXT TEXTWALL. π π π
@WE, one has to suffer for one’s art after all. π
Starting from the beginning in 1 minute. There’s a lot of preview based on the past Season, but I feel it’s good to watch it again and get the continuation.
Hi GB. So I wait you say GO
We begin now!!!
@WE, the celebration as the beginning… be a fake out introducing how stupidly honest Nao is.
The episode starts with a re-cap of Season 1, good for me ‘coz I tend to forget what I previously watched.
Hi WE, Hi GB.
Ok start.
Flashforward of final movie. Church set, with biblical organ music.
Then….
A colored (very) place, it rains.
The magical music and sounds effects ahhh.
I’m dying it’s so good.
Here the drama make us believe she goes into a dangerous situation BUT…..
@WE Go Go!!
Preview with Season 1. In the past she was brought into the game to lure Akiyama into the game too. Season 2, they had to add more to lure AS into the 4th round.
Hi @FF!
I also have forgotten a lot. I’ve forgotten a lot of Season 2 as well.
I’ve come to the part where she finds the black box in her home AGAIN and still she does not believe what she is seeing. *sigh*
Aish… we get a resume of season 1.
Araaahh, after the already resume we got in ep11 of season 1. It kills me.
Hi FEIFEI.
At least, Im glad you enjoy the resume. π
@WE, I’ve finally realised that in everything of the Liar Game… so many lies from the beginning… even getting the players to join required lies.
As usual Tanimura Mitsuo is in Nao’s home to persuade/trick her into returning to the game. He works on her misplaced sense of being responsible for everyone’s safety from the game. His luring her into the game already consisted of lies, he has the tongue of the Serpent in the Garden of Eden.
Woo it ended.
Now the old gamers are friends.
Oh shit, this gag.
“this time, I won’t be own”.
She opens it: FULL OF BANKNOTE, loool
Mitsuo first speaks of Akiyama Shinichi : “He probably means to quit the game and never return. but are you sure you should withdraw? The battle will only grow more difficult. More players will fall to the game. Can you abandon them? I was hoping you’d be able to change the Liar Game. β¦ It’s up to you whether or not you withdraw from the game. But you’re the only one who can save the other players.” – The last part is a lie.
Nao is the lure to draw in AS, but she also adds the unpredictable factor to the game….will she go along and lie like the others? Everyone will lie and we find that under the ‘right’ conditions, so will Nao, but she does so to bring about a good result. That’s the difference with how she plays the Liar Game.
She joins them to beat them.
So easy for golden-teeth to lure Nao. π
Black feathered Liar Game dealer/minion comes to deliver the invitation to Ryo, the next big opponent.
So she knows Akiyama as well and probably knows he’s supposed to be in the game. I think she wants to beat him.
And now the new big bad. ^^
If I remember well, the actress was in a blockbuster US movie about giant robots fighting monster coming from a dimensional slit in the ocean.
Nao is so naive, she really thinks that she alone can save the rest of the players? I wonder who is the new player, she is photographed together with AS.
Thinking music changes to music of decision as Nao gets up to go to LG Round 4. Poor girl is totally taken in by Mitsuo.
She gets on the truck and finds Katsuragi Ryo in it already. Ryo is wearing a top hat and black cloak – what is this image supposed to convey? She’s a scary magician? She’s from another age… smart like a detective of old?
How to put Akyhiama in the game. Put Nao first, ahaha so easy.
The music of season 2 is abit different, more techno style.
@GB, Mitsuo is the cold woman? Daughter of the previous game master?
Ryo’s black outfit reminds me of a witch.
The villain is from an episode of the british series “the avengers”, lol.
@FF Yes to the music.
The other girl is supposed to be another genius psychologist to match AS.
Nao is always dressed like a child and in bright colours.
Nao gets off first. Ryo says see you again if we both survive. – So much scary stuff imputed to lower Nao’s confidence.
As usual the place is forbidding on the outside, dilapidated like a dump, big flames burning like the gates of hell, a flickering signboard. She enters full of foreboding into the dark cluttered corridor.
From the beginning the LG deliberately plays on the psychology of its players. Only the strongest mentally can survive!
So nice to see mushroom head again and AS too.
@WE, no it is Eri who is the daughter of the old guy we saw in S1. Mitsuo is the guy with the gold tooth.
All is broken in this place until…. she enters…
@GB, thanks, I suck about names. Even I watched that x12.
3 scary weird people but… MUSHROOM TOO!
Aaah blue light from behind. AKIYAMA TOO.
AS’s reason for returning : “We didn’t learn everything.” (Later we get the flashback when Eri met AS she said “The person you met was not the organiser. (So even then in Season 1, he was lied to.)
He was simply a sponsor. In other words, you have not discovered the true identity of the Liar Game. If you want to know everything, you must keep playing the Liar Game.” So besides KN, the true organiser’s identity is the 2nd lure.
Finaly, it’s a lovely place with lot of colored lights and screens. ^^
Eri and Mitsuo in the observation room
Mitsuo : “I’m sure they told you to bring him here. but why are they so obsessed with those two?”
Nao was brought in with the expectation that she’d lose immediately and disappear from the LG. She was so foolish and honest that there was no way she could last in a game where lying was the way to play the game. Not only that, but rudeness and the breaking down of other player’s confidence was allowed. However unexpectedly of all people KN remained in the game, with the help of AS.
She confounded everyone and him as well by her honesty, and by playing the game so that there were no losers in terms of incurred debt. She became a symbol of hope, deified by Eri’s father and the player who was most in demand by LG’s organisers.
The music for Ryo is like playground music… but sinister.
Ryo gets off at another location and although a fight is going on, is perfectly cool and full of confidence. The 2 teams at this location are in a place with candles and a big cross that is reminiscent of a church. There’s stained glass and the music is the sound of church bells.
Ryo uses her psychology skills and sizes up the one who’s aggressive. “You have a combative attitude because you’re channeling your anxiety into aggression. The weaker someone is, the sooner they resort to violence. You’re afraid of losing this game, aren’t you?”
She assures him that they will win.
Mitsuo and Eri in the room.
Eri, always so cold. DO speak much, but looks like she’s confident in Akiyama, maybe she want him to win.
24 ROUND RUSSIAN ROULETTE
Ultimate gamble. Game of life and death.
Although the games are supposed to be a form of gambling or games of chance, this is also a lie. There are ways to know the probabilities. Can use reason and psychology to win the game.
The games are games of deception.
The black feathered minion looks like a vulture LOL. She’s there to pick up the dead.
The villain has also a very weird and disturbed and ridiculous piano music. π
As I remember well here. The second game, with Akiyama will be the greatest. Gosh. So good.
But let’s see first one first…
I found the Russian Roulette very nerve-wracking too!!
We see Eri is talking a lot about Passing and placing chips on the table. Nao will figure something out later, regarding this.
@GB, the korean remake was very bad about many game, this one in particular, with just randomness and scary effects… but here there is a real strategy, even with this game. Looking random at first, but…..
Nao has to think by herself now.
Good situation to make her alone with the game.
Of course, bad luck, she shoot right from the start. Everyting to scary her and make feel here she’s unable to win.
Fukunaga uses a lot of psychology to cow and unnerve/dishearten/daunt/dismay/discourage the opponent. LOL
I really dislike his character but at the same time he is easy to read. Even KN can figure him out.
Ooohh, I was wrong… I was vaguely remembering but yeah, it’s fukunaga going on this game!!
Mushroom head is quite smart, he makes me laugh.
@FF, yes Fukunaga is smart but too arrogant and irritating as well.
Like in a game of poker, he pretends to have a bad hand/uses a ruse, puts on a show but it’s a lie to provoke the opponent to make mistakes or misinterpret…. he’s very good at this. But sooooo annoying and loud. His clothes, his behaviour, voice… all so loud. So dramatic. He must stand on the table and make a big show of shooting himself.
Nishida is like putty in his hands.
They have some luck to have Fukunaga in their team because this guy is really good at that.
Fukunaga annoying laugh. It’s why we love him. ahah.
@WE, the Agency probably planned to have these 3 players together so that they could watch the fun. The dynamics of the team is fun to watch. The 3 of them have different motivations that end up at cross purposes to each other.
@GB, aaaah, it’s also the 3 best characters. ^^
We find that not only Fukunaga but even AS is using psychology to manipulate the other team. He didn’t lie though, but he did manipulate to get them to do what he wanted.
@GB, yes he is so dramatic standing on the table top.
Watching and learning from AS, Nao suddenly will realise something on her own. And she will do something similar to achieve her own ends. It was very interesting. Under what conditions would an honest person choose to be dishonest?
Maybe I already said it but:
Explanations are so well made in the drama.
Fast, entertaining, with flashback or diagrams.
Anything exciting and funny.
@FF and to add insult to injury after the opponent shoots himself, he sings about cream soda. So mean, petty and wicked.
He’s so good at pretending that Nishida was in turmoil, and had no chance to figure things out for himself.
@WE, yes the producers really made the effort to ensure that viewers could understand what’s going on or the thinking behind the game.
Ah now, we come to the end when KN realises that they are falling into a trap. Eri thinks that there’s no way they can get out of it. We’ll see in Episode 2.
@FF, how did you find the show this rewatch? I felt that it flew by too fast.
Very smart move from FF with the fake powder from the pen.
Ahh, I didn’t remembered this. Nice rewatch.
I can enjoy like the first time.
@GB, as usual, I’ll say you: it’s not the producer but the screenwriter. YEAH. π
@WE, I didn’t realise it before, but the epilogue/preview for next Ep raises a lot of the questions … adds to the cliff hanger and makes us want to jump to Episode 2 to find out the answers. Very effective!!!
You can incorporate that into your script.
@GB, yes the episode move so fast as expected like LG season 1 flew past too. I need to watch again before I go on to episode 2.
Cliffhanger, Nao thinks it’s a trap. AHH.
This was so fast, can’t believe the episode is already over.
@WE, the screen writer put all that planning into the script in advance? The producer just executed it?
Yup it went by too fast!!! 57 minutes felt like half an hour. The music was hectic and the lurid lighting, the bright and dark… adds to that feeling of everything being intense, too fast, can’t catch our breath.
I suppose that’s the tone and mood that show wants to set for us. Also always a sense of danger.
I cannot watch and comment at the same time and before I realise it the episode is done.
Season 2 does not have that super zoom in on the players expression and the loud music that comes with the zoom in so far, it feels less of manga.
The movie, Final Stage will be over 2 hours long… but maybe it will also feel like an hour’s show. LOL.
So this rewatch seems to have helped us discover a few new things.
@GB, yeah yeah, I often tell you. See W screenplay I posted here.
Or just, when you’ll read my screenplay (well, I hope), you’ll see by yourself.
It’s very cinematic. Feeling of watching the story on screen, with every insert, flashbacks, even shorts ones. All is in the script. It’s normal, it’s like a technical document about what everyone have to do. Not just a story, a technical document about everything happening on screen, story, cuts or scenes related. Of course it don’t make the shoots/angles the director want (but suggest it) and don’t make the editing about cuts in the same scene (but flashback isn’t the same scene).
@FF, there was less zoom in on faces but a few times like zoom only on Nishida’s mouth when he was smiling. But it’s true that this episode had less of a manga feel to it. Still over the top, though. The music was very effective.
@Feifei, I had a lot of trouble with comments too. Difficult to read long ones, or write. I could only write very short.
@FF @WE, I think we should be able to pause and read and write in order to put our thoughts down. At least for the episodes, that will lengthen the show to more like an hour. They are less than 50 minutes long after this episode.
Then we will feel less rushed ourselves and can respond better to comments.
@WE, yea @GB is the one with long comments. I wonder how she forms her thoughts so fast and types so fast with perfect grammar and replies to comments fast.
@FF, I watched the episode before this and had time to write out my thoughts first. That’s how I can post long comments LOL.
@FF… mmmh mmmh, I suspect some kind of treachery, like the comment was already in a bloc-note before the rewatch. AhEEEemmmmm. π
@FF but I cannot always manage to watch earlier and prepare long comments. Sometimes I have nothing much to say, or no time.
@GB, and then you kill us with your long comments, lol;
But it’s ok we pause during the rewatch as the episodes will be shorters.
@WE, precisely!!! The one who really writes looooong notes is @Welmaris. Long paragraphs!!!
@GB, I tried that for MOTA but when it is time for the comments I couldn’t find the ones that corresponds to the scene haha.
Now I don’t feel guilty anymore about posting text walls. π
@FF, I lose my comments in the wall of text too… However sometimes I put in the show timestamp on the left of my page so I roughly know where the notes are. But I haven’t done it for this lot. LG scenes were more obvious so easy to locate on page.
As I enjoyed MOTA rewatch, I have to say, Liar game is much more fun. :-))
Yup next time I will pause during the rewatch if I have to comment. Hopefully that is more manageable.
@WE, when we all agree to pause and read, then there’s no problem about navigating text walls. Can slowly climb over them LOL.
So it need some easy code like “PAUSE”, then “GO”.
@FF, @WE, yes we should not be stressed about catching up with the Show while trying to chat with each other. The idea is to interact and have fun rather than to mostly keep up with the watch. LOL.
@WE, well we can put down that we PAUSE if necessary. Also at which point we paused.
I imagine whenever I have to read a long post, I’ll have to pause. We won’t be fully in sync with one another, but it does not really matter. More or less the same time is good enough.
Yeah, let’s do that. Anyway I was out of sync here, late.
@WE, yes, let’s have our code so that we can enjoy both the show and the comments.
I felt that I was somehow going too fast ie I put the comments before the scene came on.
@GB, okie we will do it this way. Does not have to be perfectly in sync.
Yeah, still it was one hour episode. But it goes so fast. LG pace is something.
I wish you a good week (unless we speak together in between).
So nice rewatch, thanks to yous.
@FF @WE, ok we are agreed then on pausing and reading/writing and then continuing to watch.
Thanks both for a great rewatch! See you next week. π
See you all next week, it was a fast-paced re-watch.
