Hidden Love: OST “I Have Someone I Like”

This is another melody that I liked but I couldn’t make sense of the words.

Since I’m neither a Chinese lyricist nor a poet, I looked through a few versions to make it intelligible to me. This is the composite version based on the youku sub, and several music videos on YT. No need to credit me.

If ever credit this YT site instead, @Peachy Blossom Backup Channel. It has the most sensible translation.

This is the final result of my edits, with my usual snide remarks.

I Have Someone I Like
Sung by Zhao Luci

I can taste you whenever I’m breathing (see? I don’t get this. Unless you’re a snake, there’s no way the persona in the song can taste air.)
Thinking that if you want me too (~ I think this is the wrong use of the word “if”. It should be “I’m wondering whether maybe, just maybe, you want me too”)

Like a butterfly fluttering in my sight
Your ripple effect moves me. (I thought this was an interesting metaphor but it works)

Tell me are you listening
The world is moving fast
Here’s all my secrets.
I hope you like that
(I put on) a bright face, pretending to be calm.
But I can’t contain my joy.

I have a weird intuition.
The bell in my heart jingles nonstop
When I think of you. (~like bells ringing in her heart to indicate something auspicious)

How I wish I could read your heart
And see if my secret love is not one-sided.
I’m falling in love with – (the persona can’t say the name yet)

Why is your name so mysteriously fascinating?
When I say it, there’s a sweet echo.

Before you, I feign indifference,
Lest you discover that something’s off with me (~ Meaning, that the persona’s smitten with the guy. “Something’s off” doesn’t mean she’s a psycho or weirdo).

Tell me can you feel it
My heart’s beating fast
Come a little closer.
I hope you like that.
My (bashful? nervous? shy? chicken?) heart can’t stand this anymore.
I can’t help but look at you.

I’m falling in love with you.

My take-aways:

1. The song matches the mood of the moment well. They were riding the bike.

2. Hurray to women’s intuition. She has an inkling, premonition, or sixth sense that he isn’t/won’t be immune to her charms.

3. Kudos to Zhao Luci for rising to the occasion and taking care of business when the director (allegedly) left the production in the lurch.

I’m working on Episode 4. Patience is a virtue.

  1. Kudos indeed to Rosy! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 She’s got another hit drama under her belt. 🥳

I was a bit confused as well to the first line of the song. 😃 I think for me it just means her heart flutters whenever his near or sees him. ☺️

It was a nice bike ride and DJ just wanted her to destress after the bullying incident. 🥰

I’m a very patient person especially when it comes to dramas that I love. 😉 Xiexie! 🙇🏻‍♀️

  2. @pm3, I have to say I love your composite version! Definitely meaningful and it’s pretty correct.
I wish they would use the English lyrics better, “taste you when I’m breathing” sounds creepy. If the original was translated from Chinese, they should have gotten someone more familiar with the English language to do so.

Because the original Chinese word for “taste” is has many variations depending on the other word it pairs with. And if they directly translated it, it’s not totally wrong but the original meaning would have been more like:

“I can sense you when I am breathing.”

That would tie in with the next sentence better, because she senses that he maybe, just maybe, wants her too.

  3. Thank you, @packmule3 for the research and @grace for the distinctions. How nice to have a native speaker to help with nuances! I was reflecting that a person would have to have a lot of scent to get the sensation of taste of another when nearby. (Sort of like my husband making blackcurrant jam last night and the house smelling so amazingly of it.) But having an awareness/sensation of them, that sort of prickly feeling that they are close even if they aren’t — that makes sense to me.

I echo @agdr03 about having the patience for a really good drama. I look forward to the Episode 4 thoughts.

  4. 😂😂 Now that you said it, @grace….

I agree that “taste you when I’m breathing” sounds creepy. I get that when we smell food like apple pie, cinnamon rolls, coffee, and fried bacon, we can almost imagine the taste with just whiff.

But with the lyrics, “taste you when I’m breathing, there’s something overtly sexy about it.

The image that I get is her nose is right up to his skin, e.g., she can inhale his pheromones and she wants to lick, nibble, nussle him in order to taste him.

    Here’s a tongue. 👅

I’m reminded of that scene in Episode 1 when they were in the dorm room. He picked up his wallet on his desk and his face was mere inches from her face. Well?? Could she TASTE him then when she inhaled his scent? 😂😂

Anyway, I’m just nitpicking over a little thing.

What about the butterfly? Did I understand it correctly? Were butterfly and butterfly effect really mentioned in the lyrics?

  5. The tasting him will be totally crossing the line! :O lol…cringe!

But sensing and feeling gets interwined with the word 味 that can mean taste or smell at the same time. As a student last time I was really annoyed when I thought I learnt a pair of words only to find that there are another 20 over similar pairs that mean similar yet different things! Nuances to the max!

Anyway on the butterfly. Honestly I found the syntax in the song weird…”Butterflies flying out of my eyes”?!?! how? Maybe heart eyes don’t sound too bad. Butterfly effect is similar to ripple effect right? So yes, it’s something like that. A small thing can make waves, so much so that she sees signs of him everywhere.

I prefer your version that says “like a butterfly fluttering in my sight.” I would add to that:
“Liking someone is like a butterfly fluttering in my sight”
    and
“Everything is see is the ripples of that effect (of liking you)”

  6. I really love the part where she says
“I’m falling in love with –” and she doesn’t say it, even in the song because he crushing on him is such a secret that cannot be said, even when she was drunk.

The other part I add in caps
“”My TIGHTLY SEALED heart can’t wait any more,
I can’t help but look at you.”
Tightly sealed because she is trying so hard to keep it a secret.

The rest of the translations are great!!

Honestly, this is a perfect ‘crushing on someone’ kind of song 😀
