Doctor Slump: Ep 7 & 8 Open Thread

The thread is open.

Watching this couple interact, I’m convinced that great friends do make the best lovers.  Incompatibility isn’t an issue. The outlooks and goals in life, if not similar, are aligned. The quirky sense of humor (or weirdness) is appreciated. And there’s sheer pleasure in each other’s company.

I enjoy watching these two characters bond together through thick and thin.

@pkml3 me too! Me too! I really enjoy watching this couple. Despite being rivals from school, they were never nasty towards each other. They could have been great friends even then, if not for being so competitive.

Yes, they have so much between them that is aligned that it’s a pleasure to watch them bicker or pretend they don’t care a great deal for each other, while knowing that they’ll come around quickly, because they are actually and ultimately on the same page.

I was thinking that it’s interesting that the ones who seemed like the most difficult rivals, turned out to be the most just and true in their assessment of JW, while the friendly supportive ‘friend’ was something else.

  2. Old American Lady (OAL)

I love KDramas when we see people doing domestic chores. In the States we are very familiar with having washing machines and dryers either at home or at laundromat. I get a big kick when I see K drama actors using the feet in basin method and then line drying to do the laundry. I enjoyed watching our couple wringing out the laundry by hand before line drying. same with dishes_hand wash and dry.So7t y Korea is well known for its technology and super internet sp e 3d, bu5 in K Dramas, so much is done the $old fashioned” way. I 5hink that adds t9 8its charm. (and other customs like doing things from the floor, using large quilts instead of mattresses, eating at l i w tables (I could go on and on). One certainly gets to have an idea of the way real people actually live in Sl Korea. And I would o d love to know the differences in our medical systems. It.looks like there are lots of proprietary hospitals, VIP rooms, med school and undergraduate school intertwined. I know t here comments seem random but watching b this drama just got me thinking how our dramas portray social and cultural norms. I also think they help us understand better manners if we were to ever get to visit b South Korea. As an older person, I think I would get far more 4espect there than zi would ever get in the US.

  3. Just watched ep 7 and sitting here with a grin on my face. The murder is resolved but JW now has to deal with the emotional aftermath. The hyung is still sus but now I’m wondering if he’s in love with JW.

  4. Kalispera Everyone!

Finally, we get the malpractice case solved. It was awful anyway. Still, what this ARC left behind is a heartbroken and lonely Jeong Woo. It was sad watching him getting drunk and talking with Ha Neul repeating one thing in different ways.

  5. @Stacy – like in My Favorite Liar? Well it is the season of recycled plots in kdramas lately – I’m grateful there is no reincarnation and the crime plot has been resolved without a serial killer or an increase in the death count.
I really liked the confession on repeat. It was a cute twist on a pivotal moment. And I liked her voice-over describing his multiple confessions. I hope the part where he forgets everything he said while drunk doesn’t last long. And speaking of drinking – there is a lot of it in this drama.

  6. @Stacy – I meant like My Lovely Liar – best friend in love with ML plot?

Episode 7 was sweet. I found the revelation about the suspicious Kang Jin Seok kind of strange. It was exposition voiceover together with backstory of what he was doing. I found that it sat rather awkwardly in the show because it was HN’s narration about someone she didn’t know. Other voiceovers were by HN or JW about themselves or each other which felt OK, since they are close friends.

If Kang really wanted to help JW, he should have followed up with some kind of message to explain the spy cameras.

There should be some kind of compensation for all the losses that JW suffered. Why should the victim bear everything?

Park Shin Hye had a chance to do a crying scene this episode. I was more moved by PHS though. I felt that he played his role very well. He’s totally committed to being this sweet but slightly crazy character when he’s being drunk or childish.

This series has had a lot of ambivalence in it. We heard last week that Depression gives rise to ambivalent emotions and we saw and heard HN’s voiceover about it. HN and JW display both liking and rejection for each other by turns, friends and acquaintances seems friendly one moment and challenging the next or vice versa, and this week HN’s family both like and dislike JW!!! Fortunately my feelings for it are not ambivalent but quite positive!

  8. @Good Twin – yes, I was thinking of My Lovely Liar as well.

The show has been framing his behavior in a way to make him appear suspicious, using it as a bait-and-switch for the murder; same with the anesthesiologist. Show then revealed the “non-bad-guy” motives behind the anesthesiologist’s actions, which I noticed were a direct result of trauma caused by being forced to take the blame for a patient’s death. So I’m wondering if the show will do something similar with the hyung.

  9. @Stacy without giving anything away you were kinda in the ballpark. More remains to be unveiled in future episodes. I thought the show was doing a fairly superficial take on anxiety and depression but it is starting to go deeper.

@GB the reliance on narration continues. In some cases it makes sense for HN because she is in therapy which is basically first person narrative, but whole elements of the plot are told in voice over. I think the brother even narrates in this episode – but I would have to go back and watch to confirm.

I do want to go back an observe some interactions amongst the characters in earlier episodes knowing what has now been revealed. I’m curious if there were some clues. And regarding all of the voice over I am now questioning whether the narrator is always a reliable narrator.

  10. @GB – hmmm, interesting. I haven’t watched today’s ep yet, so I’ll check back in later when I do.

  11. Just finished ep 8. All is not flowers and rainbows for the OTP even after the malpractice lawsuit was resolved.

They started officially dating after a drunken declaration of love (multiple times!) and holding hands. Even I am asking the same question as HN is asking – how do people date these days? I keep asking my daughter about it, too. It’s different from the old days for sure. Enter HN’s brother with his advice and interventions! LOL!

    SPOILER ALERT!

Alas, the dating only lasted for 2 days (?), HN is ending it. She is at the throes of depression again after a very happy 1st date. There was a flashback of her perfect day in school that she was basking on, only to find out that her dad died that day. The “survivor” guilt is very strong with her and she had carried it through her adulthood. She is scared to be happy because there is always something that will dampen that happiness. After their date, she was triggered by Kyung Min’s wedding invitation – I don’t think she was jealous but more as a reminder of her “doormat” days, when he took advantage of her when she wrote the dissertation and he grabbed credit and even omitted her name on it. And he knew at that time that she was developing feelings for him, too! What a creep! I cheered when she threw the beer on his face!

@PM3 noted JW’s weakness, he thinks all people are good or have good intentions to the point that he was taken advantaged of. For HN, her weakness is being too agreeable. JW told her during their date that he does not need a girlfriend who is understanding all the time. She should also stand up, speak up for what she thinks and deserves.

She really has to take care of herself first. I like this trajectory and focus of the drama now that the murder stuff is over. This is now the hard path of healing.

I am reminded of the lyrics of “What was I made for”…

“I’m sad again, don’t tell my boyfriend
It’s not what he’s made for
    What was I made for?
    ….

Think I forgot how to be happy
Something I’m not, but something I can be
    Something I wait for
    Something I’m made for
    Something I’m made for”

I really hope she can be happy.

  12. Sorry, but I am not that happy with how the chakkanim is dealing with all those Arcs.

Jeong still has PTSD. He suffered so much but the chakkanim seems to forget about him for Episode 8.

HaNeul has a very serious problem than we thought we knew about. Probably, she needs to be hospitalized. Drinking so much, while taking medication has happened so many times now! Seriously, this is not a joke any longer! Especially, after finding out the root of her problem. This is not just depression. She is afraid to be happy, in case she will lose it.
So, she just overworked herself. Until, she broke down after that Sunbae stole her Dissertation.

Ha Neil continues not to say anything to her best friend and now boyfriend. JW knows she is lying to him.

Her OBGYN friend is an awful friend. We have seen her acting so foolishnessly for so many times now. Even Dr. Bin is more mature over her antics!

She hasn’t even asked how HaNeul is doing and let her know something over the phone (!) , when obviously HaNeul cannot handle it.

HaNeul then, breaks up with Jeong Woo. Still not letting him know why. Blaming him that he made her weak. When he truly wanted to be next to her.

When both of them are not okay.

If this is not all over the place, I don’t know what that is. Especially after that malpractice conclusion.

Yep, totally not happy at the moment…

    @Stacy, @Good Twin, @Janey, @Cleo
It seems we enter the 2nd half of the series to continue on the theme of mental health, how it manifests, how it should or should not be handled.

I was thinking it would have been great if JW, HN and Bin could work together. Unfortunately they are not yet in the right mental space for that.

It’s good that show does not lightly treat Depression and PTSD as illnesses that fade away just because of love/romance or the solving of a big problem. The fact that it sets aside 8 episodes to go into the people part of the show, gives me hope that we won’t just get quick fixes to mental health issues.

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Good Twin
Yes, Ep 8 has the incorrigibly unemployed, cash-stealing brother doing the narration. I found it okay because he gave another perspective… but at the same time I found it weird because he’s mainly a side character or just one to do a supporting role.

I wonder if we’ll get mum’s voiceover narration or even uncle’s!

Yes, on whether they are reliable narrators, we have to watch and see.

Who was it who said that trauma also played a part in the anesthesiologist. He kept running and hiding instead of coming forward to give evidence. That’s true. We’ll see if more people exhibit behaviour that Show may indicate is a result of mental health issues.

  15. Unnie,

Kalimera. The chakkanim hasn’t done her research and if she has, the story is all over the place. But that’s me. I don’t like how she is dealing with things.

  16. Like others, I found the story of the anesthesiologist really twisted. Okay, perhaps he had mental health problems/PTSD, too, but why would he plant cameras in Jung Woo’s flat and office? What was he trying to do there, record to use as blackmail? Then he simply handed the recording over to Jung Woo when he was finally caught. It didn’t make sense to me. I thought he should have been tried for withholding evidence, obstructing justice, breaking and entering and what ever people who place hidden cameras on others’ property can be charged with. I’m shaking my head.

Episode 7 was very good on the relationship/mental health side. Episode 8 had me wondering if Ha Neul’s rejection will send Jung Woo into a tailspin. I wonder what her psychiatrist had to say to her. Yes, to @Cleopatra’s observation that alcohol and drugs don’t go together; alcohol is a depressant. It’s potentially sending a message out to watchers who may not know better. Irresponsible.

  17. @Fern, the anesthesiologist broke into JW’s place to leave the pen for him to find. The annoying brother knocked it off JW’s desk and that’s how it ended up underneath a piece of furniture. And then it got wet so the recording was corrupted.
