My Sweet Mobster: Open Thread

The thread is open.

I know I’m late to the party; I’m only on Episode 2 and the series is about to end next week.

I don’t know what to expect about the show. The non sequiturs are everywhere. For example, the male lead retired from his thug life to set up a meat production company with rehabilitated felons as employees. The motto of the company? From bone to flesh. lol. That’s very reassuring, I’m sure.

But I’m not going to lie. The male lead is the main attraction for me. There’s something about his deadpan face and raspy, hoarse voice (sounds so gangster!) that made me bust a gut.

I don’t recollect seeing the actor in a drama before. However, I’ve seen the lead actress in the reality show, “We Got Married” (2013). She was “married” to Kwanghee.

Isn’t that weird? She looks younger now in the kdrama than in the WGM ten years ago.

Anyway….

I’ll binge-watch this drama.

Note: I don’t mind spoilers. But if you’re going to comment about a specific plot development in later episodes, just give the other readers and lurkers a heads-up. Thanks.

Let’s enjoy the show.

Hello @pkml3! This is great that you’re binging this show. It’s nothing much and yet has enough heart and warmth to bring on the good feels.

Um Tae Goo – I’ve not watched him in anything before. I’m sure I’d remember that voice. He’s just stoically entertaining being the ex-mafia boss with a heart of gold.

Han Sun Hwa – Sweet actress. Yes she looks young. In fact that photo of her in WGM does not look like her much and does not flatter her at all! I like that her character does not become depressed or submissive or jealous although her rival looks down on her, succeeds where she has failed, and is targeting the same man.

Kwon Yool – I personally have a problem with the way Kwan Yool looks. He’s always struck me as looking too plasticky. Face seems too smooth and something about him rubs me the wrong way, … there’s something a bit non-human about him. I do admit though, that he’s better in this show. I managed to get over the ‘ugh’ vibes and watch the scenes with him in them. Needless to say, I don’t like that he’s still determined to pursue the FL despite her making her stance clear.

The couple I ship more is the 2nd in Command, Il Young and the FK’s BFF, Mi Ho, although I do think Mi Ho was irresponsible in her behaviour. As this is a rom-com, I have trust that they’ll end up happily together (all 3 of them?)

As for the main OTP, I’m starting to feel a bit ‘ick’ about how boyfriend has become rather overly possessive over girlfriend. Let the woman have a decent conversation with other people be they male or female, for heaven’s sake. I understand his being over-protective when a rival gang is approaching her, but in other ordinary circumstances, he needs to chill. 🤔🧐🤓😝

  2. @Growing Beautifully, I thought I was the only one who felt that way about Kwon Yool, but I also think that’s why he keeps getting sort of grey roles. I keep thinking, he’s an okay looking guy, so why? His face and neck don’t match? Or he has had his beard hairs lasered?

I do like the lead, but agree about the over-possessiveness and the sometimes juvenile reactions when he is so self-possessed about other things in his life.

@Fern, I’m relieved that I’m not the only one bothered about Kwon Yool’s weird ‘look’. It might be the result of plastic surgery… the lack of much expression and all that. He seems to have improved a bit for this show anyway.

I watched Eps 13 and 14 and they were, I’m relieved to say, relatively interesting with a lot happening and more being revealed. No more tiresome, juveile possessive boyfriend shenanigans but more grown-up responsibility taking. The plot progresses nicely into the penultimate episode of next week.

Well this series has ended. In a word, it was sweet.

The ending somehow felt familiar. I was hoping that someone who worked for Ji Hwan’s horrible big, bad, authoritative father would do a twist to take Ji Hwan’s side. With the weight of culture requiring unflinching respect for hierarchy, it was a matter of time when big bad dad came out of jail for us to see who would be brave enough to stay with Ji Hwan or turn tail out of fear.

Although the ending didn’t engage me emotionally as much as some earlier episodes did, I liked the message that Eun Ha, Ji Hwan and his guys embody. There is always hope, even a bad guy can change for the better, stand firm for one’s principles, forgive and make one’s enemies one’s friends, and work for a (the) greater good.

  5. Yes, I enjoyed this series because of main couple, second couple, “the guys” and the wholesome messages. Sadly, the last episode was flat.
The bad father should have appeared more thankful and contrite in light of having his life saved by his son whom he had beaten and mistreated for many years.
The double date of two of “the guys” was intended to be funny and fell flat for me because they were made to look too ridiculous.
Yet, throughout the 15 preceding episodes they added much of the fun and humor of MSM.
My last comment is the kissing scenes of lead couple were some of the worst in modern Kdrama😢

@LL Yup, pity it was not quite as emotionally engaging as it was cute or sweet.

Errr…. there were kiss scenes? Oh… those were kisses? Heheheheh!

  7. @GB
Alas, our 16 episode wait for a kiss to passionately match with that sexy, gravelly voice of male lead was for naught 😥😂

@LL I console myself that at least I can now recognise 1 actor’s voice. I suppose not giving us a proper kiss is a great way to get us to watch more Uhm Tae Goo shows, in the hopes he’ll wow us in the kiss department sometime! 😂
