Ignore me. I’m opening this thread as a reminder to watch this Cdrama starring Dylan Wang, the dude from “Love Between Fairy and Devil” and Bai Lu, one of my favorite Chinese actresses.
It’s available on Viki. 36 episodes. (oh dear…)
Synopsis from viki.
Determined to land a front-page story, reporter Zheng Shu Yi (Bai Lu) does everything she can to score an interview with the country’s most talked about CEO, Shi Yan (Dylan Wang). With plans to invest in several promising startups, Shi Yan agrees to an interview with Shu Yi, but only if she writes about the local startups that have so far gone without notice. Meeting time and time again, the working relationship between Shu Yi and Shi Yan grows into something more. Could this spark between them be the first bloom of love? Directed by Guo Hu, this is a 2023 Chinese romantic drama series.

If you want to comment about this show, go ahead.
Heh @pkml3. Dylan looks like a Fuddy Duddy here! I like Bai Lu. Haven’t watched much with her in it, but she sends positive vibes.
I actually had this Show on my Plan to Watch List, and it may have passed through my Currently Watching to the On-hold list. I probably put it aside as there is so much to watch. Show has to be extra attention-grabby to get me to keep watching!
Now that there’s a thread here (thanks for the thread btw), I may sporadically pick it up here and there. 🙂
@Packmule3, I watched Only for Love. I thought parts of it were silly, but I needed mindless fare at the time. For me, ultimately, it was a forgettable show. When I saw this thread, I went to my MDL lists expecting to find that I’d dropped it, and was surprised to see that I’d completed it.
“Drop you glasses off mate”, is what I’m telling the ML in this scene. I started this but dropped it. I think it starts off slow?
I see Dylan Wang and Bai Lu together on lots of Chinese game shows and they are both so funny. I see Ren Jialun as well, but he’s rarely as interesting in that setting
@Fern, yeah, I don’t know about those glasses. He would do better without them. That’s why I called him Fuddy Duddy… perhaps they were to age him?
I thought I started this but I think I never did. If the beginning is slow, I may just skip most of it and jump into Episode 4. Or, I may FFD all the way through to interesting parts. 🤪
@GB,
If you’re going to fast-forward to catch the interesting parts (the couple scenes), please leave your breadcrumbs here so I can trail behind you.
Thanks, @Welmaris and @Fern, for the warning.
@Fern, while scanning the gifs on Tumblr, I thought that Dylan Wang’s eyes looked out-of-focus, even cross-eyed at times, when he wore his glasses. 🤪
@GB, I suspect that the gold-rimmed glasses were meant to show that he was rich and aloof. He was unsociable and undemonstrative until the female lead entered his life and got through his cold exterior…. 😂😂 We know how this sort of story goes.
@pkml3, alrighty, if I find myself able to embark on a gallop through Only For Love, I’ll happily leave you breadcrumbs only for you LOL.
Yes, we know how deplorable men can be, until they fall in ‘lurve’. It’s familiar and can be fun, depending on how they play it. 😉😆
🤣🤣🤣 I meant that he shouldn’t be catching anyone jumping out of a tree whilst wearing glasses because it could be hazardous. I think they are meant to make him look serious/studious.
Heheheheh! Well there is more than one way to interpret those gold rimmed glasses!

This series is not really worth watching, but Bai Lu is charming and so far Dylan isn’t. LOL
Breadcrumbs to couple scenes . . . the first 10 or so episodes were rather frustrating with regards to OTP scenes.
Ep 1 – Shi Yan cancels on the agreed interview with Shu Yi. She hunts him down and they almost meet at some banquet. She does not even know what he looks like completely because he’s been keeping out of the limelight. They see each other from a distance. She had gone hoping to still get a chance to interview him, but this falls through. Still he guesses that she hasn’t eaten yet and tells his secretary to see to her getting to eat and to get a car to send her home.
It rains and he almost gives her a ride, but she has a boyfriend who comes to fetch her.
Ep 2 and 3 – She’s broken up with cheater boyfriend. Shi Yan does not know this. she manages to finagle a car ride with him to interview him enroute to a horse ranch owned by Uncle Guan. She does not know that that same day her colleague had stolen her interview outline and slipped in to interview him already. However she had submitted her outline to him earlier, hence he knew there was something fishy about the colleague, Miss Xu’s interview.
He demonstrated some good principles by accepting both interviews and not telling on Miss Xu. He gave Shu Yi more information because she was the one he had chosen to interview him and her questions were also more well researched.
Uncle Guan lets her change clothes to try horse riding, while Shi Yan is also changing, and we have the de rigueur scene where someone is caught a little underdressed. She ends up riding on the same horse with him, but he startles her by galloping the horse and she practically falls off.
Ep 4 and 5 – She had fallen asleep in his car and left an earring behind. She goes over to his home to retrieve it. He seems to be anticipating her arrival but his 22-year old niece is staying there as well. He displays very little hospitality (no invitation to take a seat!!!) and she forgets to take the earring. She tries to be friendly and speaks of their favourite singer Song Le Lan but he is hardly communicative.
She wants his permission to do a special coverage of his work and startups but he is not too pleased. It’s later that we figure out that he does not want her to get close to him for reasons to do with work. It’s hard because she’s a workaholic. She decides to leave before his niece sees her.
In order to get his niece Shi Yue to stop idling, she is made an intern at Shu Yi’s workplace. It’s a secret though that she’s Shi Yan’s niece, which leads to some misunderstandings later. Of course, she has to come under the supervision of none other than Shu Yi.
Although Shu Yi’s article with the interview has been sent to Shi Yan for approval before publication, he gives no feedback on what revisions he wants but he sends it back 3 times without approving it. The publication deadline looms. She can only reach him through his secretary. She decides to go to his home to wait for him.
He has remained cold, taciturn, and mostly out of sorts, however he does steal looks at Shu Yi.
Thank you, @Growing Beautifully. I have some time to catch up this morning, so it’s appreciated.
@Fern, you’re very welcome. I’m always glad to know if anyone read my nonsense. Lurkers never give me even a peep and I wonder if I’m wasting my time.
I’m galloping into the 20s range of episodes now. The OTP can be quite frustrating. FL seems to have the knack of accidentally putting her foot into it when she should either be quiet or say something else. ML is too silent for too long!!! Other couples are cropping up left and right.
It gets sweeter around Ep 20. 😉
Thanks for the heads-up, @Growing Beautifully. I’m ff-ing a bit, but I hate to lose dialog or information, so I’m a bit slow at it. Just got through the horse riding. Dear me, Shi Yan had a bit of a moment in the dressing room, but he got over it fiercely! 😜
There was an interesting scene when they were both speaking through a car window, episode 2, about 22.55. I don’t know if it was a conscious move by the director, but we kept seeing their eyes, first Shi Yan then Shu Yi. (many similar initials here) Someone mentioned ages ago in Fairy and Devil that Dylan Wang’s eyes aren’t symmetrical. Neither are Bai Lu’s if we can take the scene as honest. His left eye is larger and her right eye is larger. Is it a hint from the director, showing us a physical way that they are similar, complementary and fated?
The leads have been on a number of game shows together. I wonder if it makes it easier or more difficult for them to act together.
Thank you for this thread Queen. I totally forgot about this drama because it wasn’t really a hit when it aired. But I like Dylan and love Bai Lu. As far as I know there’s plenty of kisses here so I’m good to go. 😂
Hi @GB and @Fern 👋🏻
I’ll try to catch up with you Ladies. I guess I might have to ff (for the first time) if it’s slow.
I’m just watching the Olympics swimming now. 😃
@Fern, LOL yes, that dressing room scene. I was wondering what Shu Yi was going on about the belt. But later we’ll see that Shi Yan remembers. In any case, he was very fierce indeed with that belt!
I know that Dylan’s eyes are very obviously asymmetrical, and now that you’ve pointed it out, yes, Bai Lu’s eyes are also not the same size, especially from certain angles. What a fun supposition… who knows… maybe there’s a subtle hint that they are fated to be together because when facing each other, their eye sizes are relatively like mirror images? 😜🤪🧐😂
Hi there @agdr03, I’ve watched up to Ep 20, and so far not much in the way of skinship. He may have carried her or ridden a horse with her, etc but somehow I don’t count that as the interaction was more perfunctory than romantic.
At Ep 14 there is something of a peck? But no chance to follow-up *sigh*. You have to wait until Ep 19. I certainly hope the Episodes 21 onwards will be more forthcoming with kisses!
@GB from memory/instagram posts that I saw, there’s a door, sofa and bed scenes. 😉
Hopefully my memory is correct though. It’s a fail these days. 😂
@agdr03 well I have more than 15 episodes to go so you give me hope!!! LOLOL. Maybe they gave us nothing in the first half and piled it on thick in the second half??? 🥰😇
Maybe that’s it @GB, pile it on the second half. 😃 I really hope I’m right. 🤞🏻
@agdr, @Fern, @pkml3…. it does get better from end of Ep 19 or 20 onwards. I’m sniggering at the situation FL has gotten herself into, most inadvertently. Dylan/Shi Yan has become more human now.
I’m not finding Shi Yan inhuman, just focussed in these early episodes.
Episode 3 spoilers:
🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴
When he is at the horse riding centre, the uncle makes an assumption about a woman coming along. Shi Yan doesn’t deny his interest in her when he speaks to his uncle. Quite the opposite; he lets his uncle think that he brought her out of interest when he could have said it was only for an interview. The (matchmaker) uncle, knowing her style (in journalism), thinks that Shi Yan and Shu Yi have similar personalities. Shi Yan is playing his cards close to his chest but seems to have plans for Shu Yi already.
@Fern, yes indeed. He remained like a mostly silent brick wall with her for some time but he did choose her to be the interviewer, and he did look at her with admiration. He has some secrets to keep … about who his sister is, and who his niece is. The family want to keep everything private. He was also wary of people who approached him, who might have ulterior motives. It took him a long time to loosen up.
I have a guess who his sister is and it would be prudent for him to be wary of people who approach him. I’m at ep. 5 atm.
I’ve watched 12 episodes.
I’m getting frustrated with this couple. He under-reacts; she flirts but in private moments she wants to talk about business. They both over-think without getting the correct information. In other words, the pace of their romance is glacial. Almost like real life. 😆 It seems logical that he wants her to know him well before getting serious because it seems that he has been burned before.
Things I like: the oddness of the crush Qin Shiyue has on Yu You. She was no scholar and he is a professor.
The Three Musketeers.
Uncle Guan Xiangcheng, who is a level head somewhere between the Old Guys and the Three Musketeers.
Zheng Li as the empathetic and wise lady boss who sees the value in everyone even if they misbehave.
@Fern, I started episode 1 but the swimming trunks 🙈 I mean the Olympics has taken me away. 😂
@agdr03, 🤣🤣🤣
@agdr03 I will give you that swimming trunks probably have more reactions and expression than our ML in the early stages LOLOL.
Oh @agdr03… there are a few more smooches and you’ll probably like the one in Ep 32.
Oh and look out for bites… 1 given and later 1 returned Heh!
@GB, thanks for the heads up. I’m looking forward to it. 😃
Yeah, SY’s expression is nothing much except for that look when he saw ZS talking to YY. 😂
@Fern
Astute observations! I heartily agree.
I was frustrated a good deal of the time but I pushed through til the end. The OTP’s push and pull was rather out of sync. I felt that they were pushing or pulling away rather than going back and forth towards each other.
I was often distracted by thoughts of Shu Yi not having had any meals and repeatedly, she’d be somehow or other missing them although she and Shi Yan had started off by going to eat somewhere.
Although Dylan’s character finally warms up, it took rather too long. And the plastic earring of hers that he kept, I believe she never remembered to take back!
Over and over again, different ladies or the same Shi Yue was used by the Show to make potential girlfriends jealous. Poor Shi Yue was innocent throughout.
Also repeatedly, people were speaking or reacting without enough information, and as a result, causing trouble or misunderstandings. That makes me feel the writer didn’t try very hard to be more creative.
I did not agree with Zeng Li’s letting the thieving Xu Yu Ling off after she stole the outline and interview of her colleague, passing off the outline as her own. She should have faced severe repercussions for such a misdeed.
To make up for the slowness in the progress of the romance, Show tossed in more skinship and kisses at the end. I’ll let you decide what you think about them. 😉
@agdr03, the good stuff comes in at the end, with the last few episodes. Don’t forget to watch the Special Episode (almost 11 minutes long). It’s worth the watch!! 🙂 🧐😝

Breadcrumb(s) to the OTP Moments EPISODES 6
Shi Yan waits at home for Shu Yi to come to check out and amend her draft article with him, with some degree of anticipation. However, to her face he’s as stiff and cold as ever. I note that he deliberately hides her plastic earring, but she also never remembers it at all! So much for her lie that it was an heirloom and precious to her, etc.
Shi Yan is surprised to find out that she had broken up with her boyfriend. Since she reminds him that it happened on the day of the banquet when they should have met, he asks “So?” (so curt it’s tiresome!)
She takes the opportunity to spring a surprise question: “Can I pursue you?” (I feel this was just on the spur of the moment … on impulse and not planned. However, we might date from this time anything that she does which might or might not be sincere with regards to Shi Yan).
Shi Yan: “If I say no, will you stop?”
Shu Yi: “No.”
Shi Yan: “Then why are you asking me?”
Yup, that’s about a deep as their conversation goes so far. Anyway, she managed to get his number at last so that she could chat with him.
Niece Shi Yue has advice for Shi Yan. By only having a woman over to drink and then kicking her out of the house without spending quality time together, he was behaving like a pervert (I think she means that he appears licentious). She advised him to not be so insensitive but if he really liked the woman to take the initiative to pursue the woman he likes and to strike while the iron is hot. (Similar advice came from BFF Shan Shan to Shu Yi too I believe!)
However, Shi Yan did not take his niece’s advice. He was too cautious and for a long time. Perhaps as @Fern has suggested, because he’d been hurt before by his ex-gf.
Shu Yi is not as interested in Shi Yan as she is in getting the digital platform of the magazine upgraded so that she can publish more digitally. She decides that since he didn’t say outright that she shouldn’t pursue him, then she’d try, which she did with flirty lines of text, but he unsubscribed from her chat LOL. He’s a real tough cookie, this fella.
Thank you, @Growing Beautifully. It’s absolutely true that work is the priority for both leads. I thought it was funny that Shi Yan only responds to OTT texts from her, so her texts become more and more silly.
I like Shan Shan, but her advice pigeon-holes men into certain types. Some of her concepts – to keep them guessing, don’t respond immediately, be aloof – I don’t think it works 100% for Shu Yi in regards to Shi Yan who values sincerity in a partner.
@agdr03,
You know what to do. 😂 Please compile all the kiss scenes 💋💋💋and I’ll post them on a different thread. Thank you.
It’s funny but lurkers are still looking up your list of kiss scenes for “Hidden Love.” 🤪🤪
The Australian (men) swimmers were so good! Congratulations!
Howdy! 👋🏻
Deal! 👍🏻 Will make a kiss list for Only For Love. 😉 I thought there wasn’t really a lot of kisses in Hidden Love. Isn’t it less than 10? Around 9? 😃
Thank you for the congratulations! 🥳 I’ll give it back to you with how amazing the Women’s gymnastics were. 🙌🏻
Hi @agdr03… just chipping in to help you start off your Kiss Scenes list …
1) Episode 11 – The Almost Kiss took place after she says she thinks him ‘excellent’.
2) Episode 14 – The Lady Peck after he shares why he left his dad’s company. Followed by an almost follow-up kiss *grrrrr lousy phone calls that interrupt!*
3) Episode 16 – The tiresome Another Almost Kiss in the hotel corridor.
Heh… It gets a bit juicier henceforth so I’ll leave the rest to you!!!
I’d say there were a moderate number of kisses, not as much as with the actor Wang Zi Qi in The Love You Give Me and Once We Get Married. Those were very nice kisses to rewatch!!!

I feel Shi Yan is very mean to not confirm the article with Shu Yi until the literal 11th hour when the whole company of magazine staff were waiting til nigh midnight to get the publishing going. There was no reason for him to delay. He had time and he’d already approved the draft verbally. This leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Even before when she’d gone to his place, it was because he refused to give feedback on what changes he wanted her to make. He could have done that once and for all and saved her the time and the journey. So in the beginning he’s a right old meanie and not one I’d recommend as boyfriend material.
He overhears her saying that he’s an unreasonable person, so that chicken and and egg thing takes place. Did he behave even more meanly because of what she said or was he always that bad anyway? In particular, he’s mean towards her but merely coldly polite to others. Her BFF said that some ‘boys’ who like girls are like that. They torment the ones they like and the more they like the girl, the more they behave as if they don’t like them.
Shu Yi thinks he won’t read any of her texts, so she continues to text him nonsense, flirty stuff, but he does read them. As a result when she teases him to come and fetch her because she misses him, she’s stunned that he turns up within minutes because he saw her text and happened to be passing by. However the ride in his car is far from warm or comfortable, and she cannot wait to get out of it.
More torment – while any normal gentlemanly guy would help get a seat for a friend, at the Annual Strategy Conference, he gives no indication that he has bothered to get her a place. He lets her worry until the last minute before fetching her through the VIP entrance but in a most cold and uninviting way. So he is really living out the ‘unreasonable’ part of her description of him.

Thanks @GB! muwah!
I appreciate my head start! 🙂

Breadcrumb(s) EPISODES 7 – 9
Jealousy – Each time Shi Yan looks away and looks again at Shu Yi, he sees a different man speaking with her and he starts frowning LOL. But although he’s jealous, he still won’t take the initiative to approach her first to declare his interest. (I was wondering if I could reach through the screen to strangle him).
Seeing her with another journalilst, he calls her loudly to separate her from the other man. But then instead of being sweeter he intimidates her and questions her about the girl who accompanied her (his secret niece Shi Yue). Since Shu Yi does not know that Shi Yue is his niece she starts to wonder why he’s so interested in another girl right in front of her.
Shi Yue goes to a vending machine but has trouble getting her drink. Yu You comes to help her. Shi Yue is smitten by him at once, and starts her pursuit of him.
Because identities/relationships are being hidden and because of the lack of communication between the OTP, appearances are constantly being misinterpreted. Shu Yi and Yu You meet and chat but when they see Shi Yan and Shi Yue, with Shi Yue hanging on to Sshi Yan’s arm, Shu Yi thinks he’s got a girl on the side whom he’s not ashamed to flirt with in public and Shi Yan thinks Yu You may be his rival.
Shu Yi runs off thinking that Shi Yan might be too busy with the other girl to bother, while at the same time hoping that he’ll come to her. He does come after her to bring her home. She falls asleep in his car (again) and he waits for her to wake up, while holding her head up with his hand for ages.
She thanks him and he’s pleased, even wanting to stroke her head but he stops himself. She then thoughtlessly puts her foot into it again by saying she wants to talk to him about work. The frown that’s never far away plonks back on his brow and he is no longer pleased. She’s surprised by his quick change. To her it seems that he blows hot and cold.
(To be continued …)
Hugs 🤗😘🥰😁 and Kisses back to you @agdr03!!
I don’t think I’ve ever been so frustrated with a drama’s main characters. It’s like every miscommunication trope has been gathered to prolong the OTP getting together.
@Growing Beautifully, that “frown that’s never far away” is such a great image for Shi Yan. When he tries to smile for a photo, it looks so artificial. When he finally has a genuine grin, it is like the sun appearing in an English summer.
Helping drive the miscommunication is the characters’ inability to say yes or no when it’s appropriate. The blind dates for example. ‘No mother, I know him already but I’m interested in someone else’ could so easily be said by Shu Yi. ‘No, I won’t date one of my students because it’s inappropriate and makes me and @Fern uncomfortable.’ (Yu You. Not to mention that Shi Yue is quasi-stalking him, #uncomfortable.) Yes, I will appreciate a man who is trying to be exclusive with me, meets my requirements, who has been loving and kind to me and who is being tormented by me. (Shan Shan).
Yet, I continue.
@Fern, I just finished episode 6 and I’m not sure if I’ve ever said this in a drama but it’s quite boring. 😂
I got a bit confused too when she said to Shi Yan if she can pursue him? I understand him getting curious about her because he did remember her from 3 years ago but her liking him already. I was 🤔. But maybe from the long glancing scenes between them, that’s how they want to show it? 🤷🏻♀️
Like you I still watch. 😂 My title now is Only for Kisses. 🤣
@agdr03, I remember that and thinking is Shu Yi teasing Shi Yan to get him to loosen up? Similar to how she writes flirty texts to him because he would only respond to unusual texts. Or did she blurt out what was in her subconscious? For someone who is so gifted with words professionally, she sure puts her foot in her mouth in real life so often!
She must like him then because she didn’t really care about the ex bf. She was more concerned in seeing the girl who stole him. 😁
The start of episode 7 finally got me laughing. She sent a text to him and said to pick her up because she misses him. He did. 😂 But then they’re so awkward in the car. 🙄
@agdr03 and @Fern, yes I was frustrated and bored too. However I decided to be a completist for this drama, and to hate-watch it even if I didn’t like it.
The kisses only properly start in Ep 19 (at the end!) and then they don’t exactly continue regularly but sporadically *sigh*.
I feel your sigh @GB 😂
@agdr03, @Fern, with regards to the cheater ex-bf… it was he who had been pursuing Shu Yi for years until she decided to date him. So, she was not the one who fell in love. Hence the breakup was damaging more to her self-esteem than to her emotional well-being.
As for her sudden question about pursuing Shi Yan, she explains that later. It became a thorn in their relationship actually.
I guess Shi Yan’s attitude is explained by him waiting to see what she’d do next. He (most annoyingly) didn’t take the initiative in their relationship for ages.
This show highlights women taking the initiative to pursue the men. The title “Only For Love” seems to refer more to the reasons for the pursuit. They may have whatever reasons, but someone like Shi Yan wants to be pursued ‘only for love’.
Shu Yi ranks her job above men and has therefore an ‘impure’ reason for pursuing Shi Yan. Shi Yue is more sincere. As for Shan Shan, she seemed to value her freedom more than a committed relationship.
We find the reverse with 2 of the men… either they do not pursue the women or if they do, they do so with the appearance of being begrudging about it, or it happens much later, and only after it’s safe, ie only after they are sure the girl really cares for them.
Guan Ji is the one who does pursue Shan Shan, but his motives are uncertain because he has many women around him and he wants to retain his freedom like Shan Shan. Show, however, has it that when the good men (not rotters like the ex-bf) finally get down to taking the initiative to pursue the ladies, they do it ‘only for love’.
I’m guessing that’s one of the reasons for this Show title.
@agdr03, those awkward silences continue for many episodes. 🙄. A lot of hurry up and wait; start and stop. It takes eavesdropping to get around the logjam of love at one point.

👏👏👏👏
Wow! I’m impressed, @agdr03! Did you rewatch the show for the kisses or did you remember them all?
Thank you so much!
I’ll repost the list in a thread of its own so it’ll be easier to find.
🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
You are welcome! 🥰 Anything for kisses. 😂
I made notes when the kisses was shown so I didn’t have to rewatch but I did rewatch the last few kisses. 😍I can’t trust my memory these days so notes is my go to. 😁
This drama was ok. @Fern was right that it was frustrating because this couple couldn’t outright say what they want to say. They went around a roundabout instead of going straight. And so it took ages to get them to be together.
I think it wasn’t a good idea to watch it on YouTube because at some point I wasn’t following that Shuyi wanted revenge on the ex. 😂 I got there though.
This drama didn’t need to 36 episodes. 28 episodes would have been enough. 😃
