The Frog: Open Thread

I’m sure this kdrama premiering this Friday, August 23 is nothing like Kermit the Frog of the “Rainbow Connection” fame.

But to those who want to give themselves a little — or a lot? — of adrenaline rush tomorrow night, all eight episodes will be released on the same day.

Judging from the trailers, there’s some sort of time loop involved.

@swiss_postscripts, are you watching this? If you are, please give me spoilers! Thank you.

Enjoy the show!

  1. Just finished first two episodes, and The Frog definitely held my attention. Seems a bit slow at times but this ultimately serves to increase the tension about what might be coming next. Further, it took me until the second episode to see the “time loop.”
Definitely darker than I prefer but will stick with at least a couple of episodes more. Good cast. Also appreciate all episodes have been dropped.

  2. Thanks for your update, @LootieLyn. I skimmed the first episode and it seems that the more action is taking place internally (or in the minds of the lead characters) than externally. We don’t really see the murders taking place, right?

I like that actress playing the cop. (What’s her name again?)

  3. @Packmule3, yes we see more of the aftermath of murders than actual murders. Also, true that we are inside the minds of main characters much of the time.
It is edgy, good use of soundtrack to create foreboding and striking use of color (spaghetti sauce, paintings ,etc.)
Lee Jung Eun is older female cop who has acted in many dramas, currently in Miss Night and Day.
Haven’t seen to end which will determine my final opinion, but The Frog does raise some important and timely moral questions.

  4. @LootieLyn,

Have you figured out why it’s called “The Frog”? That’s the reason I wanted to watch this series.

Apparently there is an old Korean saying, “A frog dies from a stone thrown inadvertently”, which means people’s actions can have unintended negative consequences for others. I have also seen reference to a frog being hit by stones by mischievous kids and wondering what he did to deserve this. This is recurring theme of the show. Yeong Ha and Sang Jun are the frogs.
The show gets more gory as it progresses; nonetheless it is quite the thriller.
