No Gain, No Love: Eps 3 & 4 Open Thread

The thread is open.

A helpful tip from @Welmaris. Thanks, @Welmaris!

For those who are watching on Amazon Prime, I figured out how to air the show with dialogue in Korean and English subtitles. Pause play, and a line appears. Above the line to the left are three icons. Click on the right-hand icon, which is Audio & Languages. Scroll until you see Hangul letters, and click on that line. Back out of that screen. Pause play again and click on the middle icon above the line: that’s Subtitles. Select English. Back out of that screen and resume playing.

I have Covid so go on ahead without me. I’ll join you later.

Let’s enjoy the show!

  1. Oh dear. Have a rest and praying it won’t be too bad for you. Is this your first time getting it?

So my son apparently has Amazon Prime so I’m going to use it. But it’s not there yet. 😞 I’ve checked a couple of times. I’m excited to watch it.

All the best to you @pkml3, have a good recovery and loads of immunity at the end of this illness!

    Thanks for the thread!

  3. Feel better soon @PM3! I hope it’s just a mild case. Several of our friends and family who recently traveled got hit, too. Pls take care!

    @agdr03, @pkml3
Episode 3 was cute, even with cringey moments. I found that I liked the proposal scene. And I liked the mystery twist!!!

I wonder how much congratulatory money Hae Young collected!

  5. Feel better soon, @Packmule3. I hope you can get all the rest you need to fully recover.

  6. Old American Lady (OAL)

Sending you healing vibes @packmule3.I hope you have a supply of paxlovid, lots of juices and liquids for hydration,a comfy bed and a supply of great dramas for when you’re awake.

  7. Love, love episode 3. It was funny, sad, heartwarming, touching and emotional.

The proposal was simple but it was extra meaningful because it was her favourite pang pang jelly and the effort to buy the last batch because it was being discontinued. 🥰

I hope you’re getting better wuri Queen. 🙏🏼

    EPISODE 4
This show continues to be twisty and intriguing.

    SPOILERS

The real daughter, HY takes time off after the wedding to get away by herself instead of spending time with her demented mother.

The demented mother recognises the fake husband/son-in-law, JU as her fake son, but not her own daughter.

The person who spends time with the demented mother is the ‘fake son’ and ‘fake husband,’ JU.

    = = =

Conversely JU is avoiding his own real mother.

    = = =

In another case of the wrong persons getting together are the long-term boyfriend of Hee Sung who’s two-timing her with the script-writer for the adaptation of Ja Yeon’s web novel.

Then there’s the case of Gyu Hun pretending to be a jobless man who finds out that his secretary wants to date the Writer of web novels who is out to sue him, who also happens to be Writer Yeon Bo Ra or rather, Ja Yeon.

HY wins the job competition and becomes Team Leader because she had a fake marriage. While her fake husband presumably comes to really get recruited to work in the new team with her!

    Quite a plateful of masquerades!

  9. I’m finding interesting reel life and real life intersections. The director of No Gain No Love, Kim Jung Sik, also directed Strong Girl Nam Soon. In Episode 3 of NGNL, three stars of SGNS had cameos: Kim Jung Eun, who played Nam Soon’s mother, Hwang Geum Ju, in SGNS, briefly reprised the role in NGNL; Lee Joong Ok, who plays Geum Ju’s secretary in both; and Lee Seung Joon, who played Nam Soon’s father in SGNS and is Son Hae Yeong’s father in the NGNL flashbacks. In Episode 2 of NGNL, Kim Hae Sook plays Ji UK’s grandmother; in SGNS she played Nam Soon’s grandmother. Kim Ki Doo also appears in both shows: as the PE teacher at Son Hae Yeong’s middle school, and in SGNS as Nam Soon’s Uncle. That a lot of crossover! What that suggests to me is that all these actors have good working relationships with this director.

And keep your eyes open for a spinoff from NGNL: Spice Up Our Love is going to be made into its own show. The director and screenwriter of NGNL, Kim Jung Sik and Kim Hye Young, are listed for SUOL, as are main leads Lee Sang Yi (CEO in both) and Han Ji Hyun (dietitian in SUOL, romance writer in NGNL). This could be fun!

  10. How are you feeling Queen? I hope you’re getting plenty of rest. 🙏🏼❤️

    Spoilers ahead.

This show is very addictive. ☺️ It’s amazing that all the characters are intertwined somehow. I loved that JU turned out to be one of HY’s Mom’s foster child. He even took care of her for 3 months. It’s interesting that HY’s Mom is known as an angel and same with JU. 😃

I laughed when JU held HY and lowered her on the bed. I thought he was going to get the upper hand but HY stumped him with ‘do you kiss only when the girl closes her eyes?’. 😂

Also when Ja Yeon tried to explain to HJ what she writes now, they close up Banapresso. Are they referring to bananas? 😂

BWS’s cameo was funny. Do you like the cancer or stroke one? 😄 So true!

I like that HY said to JU that they’re a family. ☺️ I like that JU wrote that letter to HY wishing her all the best and good fortune. No wonder they missed each other. I loved that JU said it outright too that he missed her when he saw her again at the end of episode 4.

I can’t wait till they get closer and closer. ☺️ I noted that he was wearing his ring when the car turned on the lights at him.

The cat is mysterious too! 😂

  11. I wasn’t all that impressed with this show for the first two episodes, but the third episode got me hooked. I laughed, I (sort-of) cried. I laughed out loud at the chaebol son writing angry online posts that mentioned King Seongu. And my eyes got a little moist when I saw all the foster children greeting the FL’s mom at the wedding.

Thanks @GrowingBeautifully for the recap and @Welmaris for the info on cameos/inter-connections and upcoming sequel (not sure how that web novel will translate to a PG-rated drama!)

I’ve never found Kim Young-Dae all that impressive in anything I’ve seen him in so far, but he’s doing OK here. I hope he keeps growing as an actor.

Thanks also to @pm3 and everyone who pointed out the innuendo that’s missing in the Amazon Prime translations. For that reason, I wish this was being shown on Viki. I’m pretty sure the volunteer translators there would have delighted in pointing out the “can you raise it?” comment, which became something like “can you take care of it?” on Prime. That’s why I’m so happy this blog exists! I often miss small gestures on screen (as when the FL lead looked down at the ML’s pants while this question was asked) because I’m too busy reading the translations.

  12. Old American Lady (OAL)

@BethB, I am grateful for this blog because I probably wouldn’t even be aware of this drama. I am finishing up a rewatch of Dr. Cha and will begin this drama. It sounds very diverting. I do a lot of rewinding when I find myself needing to catch up with the subtitles. As nobody else in my family watches Asian dramas, I am not interfering their programs. I do watch several YouTubers with my husband as well as the Game of Thrones series and now Kaos(a modern time version of Greek mythology with Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, Janet McTeer as Hera, Billie Piper as Cassandra, to name a few).

  13. @agdr03

I actually read it as banana press when I Noticed the close up on the cup.😂 I did not know the name of the shop but then they do pan to the shop sign.

  14. @Pm3, I hope you recover good health.

I watched Ep 3 and 4. Last one was boring.
Here, I’m now in the shallow island. Jaded.

I should watch older rom-coms because those new ones don’t work on me.
This remembers me My-Demon or Strong girl nam-soon, about tone and style.
Difficult to find good comedy, and most of the time, it’s ruined by sound-effects.
I feel like everything is useless, artificial, already made better elsewhere.
Most of my fun is posting negative comments on MDL, so to not polluate BOD with my crap.

I noticed something: it uses the same strategy as other dramas I mentionned: have a bunch of ready-to-serve secondary characters.
