Happy New Year! Here’s wishing you all good health, prosperity, peace and happiness for the coming year.
I love lists and Soompi created a masterlist of 2004 kdramas just in time.
We had a lot more shows this year, but I think the increase in number is mainly due to kdramas being varied in length. There’s time to fit in more kdrama when studios deviate from the regular 16-episode production. We now have a wide variety, ranging from 2 episodes to 50 episodes.
I skimmed the list to see what I dropped, will binge-watch later on, will finish eventually (cross fingers!) and finished.
A. Dropped:
1. A Good Day to be a Dog
Starring Cha Eun Woo, Park Gyu Young and Lee HyunWoo
Remember this? It’s like the “The Frog Prince” but this time, it’s the woman who’s cursed to become a dog whenever she’s kissed. After the fifth episode, I no longer cared to know the origin of the curse and its cure.
2. Chicken Nugget
Starring Ahn JaeHong and Ryu SeungRong
The hook for me here was Kim YooJung (“My Demon”) turned into a chicken nugget. But I think this is mostly about the antics and misadventures of her (secret??) admirer and her father to turn her back into a human. I heard Kim YooJung was just a cameo.
3. Dear Hyeri
Starring Shin HaeSun and Lee JinUk
Was this worth the time invested in it, @GB and @WEnchanteur? I heard the beginning was great but the story unraveled after that. Shin HaeSun played a TV announcer with a dissociative identity disorder.
4. DNA Lover
Starring Choi Siwan and Jung InSun
I thought the premise was weak. A genetic researcher was so obsessed about proving the validity of her research to the detriment of her love life. The love triangle with Lee Taehwan failed to interest me because I’m not into noona romances to begin with.
5. Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale
Starring Pyo YeJin and Lee JunYoung
Who fell first and who fell harder? I guess it’s the Prince Charming.
6. Frankly Speaking
Starring Go KyungPyo ad Kang Hanna
The male lead is a rising talent at his tv station. He’s in the running to become the next prime time news anchor but an incident happens (was he electrocuted??) and he’s suddenly stricken with a can’t-tell-a-lie-itis. I like Kang Hanna but unfortunately, I find Go KyungPyo a boring actor. I can’t muster enough interest to continue past the 3rd episode, frankly speaking.
7. Like Flowers in Sand
Starring Jang DongYoon and Lee JooMyung
I tried. I really tried to watch this. But one, I find ssireum boring to watch. Kinda like boxing. I don’t like to watch sweaty, bare-chested men dueling each other. I prefer to watch a matador in fancy embroidered cape dueling a bull. Ole!
And two, I found the introspective nature, inflexible personality, and expressionless face of the female lead boring as heck. She’s no flower, and I can’t see her blooming in a barren landscape.
8. My Demon
Starring Kim YooJung and Song Kang
Remember the tango scene or the scene where the couple brushed their teeth together? There’s something about these glitzy and over-produced/over-done moments that reeks of fanservice. The romance in the drama felt as artificial, insincere, and bogus as Junho and Yoona’s “King the Land.” I just wanted the quiet and softer aesthetics to convey the timelessness of love.
9. Serendipity’s Embrace
Starring Kim SoHyun and Chae JongHyeop
Boring plot that not even Chae JongHyeop’s puppy dog eyes can save.
10. Atypical Family
Starring Jang KiYong and Chun WooHee
The supernatural family meets a super-criminal family.
I think the female actress was miscast. Had the female character been played by a more charismatic, more beguiling actress, this would have garnered more attention.
11. The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract
Starring Lee SeYoung and Bae InHyuk
The time travel wasn’t incorporated well, and the mystery surrounding his death and their contractual marriage appears shoehorned in. This webtoon could have been better rewritten for the TV by an experienced screenwriter.
12. Wedding Impossible
Starring Jeon JongSeo and Moon SangMin
Pass! The female actress rubs me the wrong way. Kinda like Han SoHee.
B. Will Binge-Watch When I Have Time:
1. A Shop for Killers
Starring Lee DongWook as an ahjussi and Kim HyeJoon
She inherited a shop selling garden supplies that was actually a front for assassins. Interesting premise.
2. Brewing Love
Starring Kim SeJeong and Lee JongWon (the male lead in “Knight Flowers”)
It started slowly because the script sought to give us the background of the main lead character. Unfortunately, I had no time to wait for them to meet.
3. Death’s Game
Starring Seo InGuk and Park SoDam
I just want to see how theme of death differs from SIG’s previous work, “Doom at Your Service.”
4. Lovely Runner
Starring Byeong WooSeok and Kim HyeYoon
The breakout drama of BWS? How can I skip this one?
5. Marry You
Starring Lee YiKyung (the evil ex-husband in “Marry My Husband”) and Jo SooMin
I thought this romcom was on Netflix USA because it was released by Netflix in SK. Will wait until it’s available.
6. Missing Crown Prince
Starring idol Suho and Hong YeJi
This is supposedly a spin-off of “Bossam.” This time around it’s the man – the crown prince –who’s kidnapped by the woman. But where do I watch it? Aye, there’s the rub.
7. My Sweet Mobster
Starring Um TaeGoo and Han SunHwa
This 16-episode kdrama would have been better if it were truncated to 12 episode. Nonetheless, I think it’s worth watching because of the taciturn performance of Um TaeGoo.
8. Spice Up Our Love
Starring Lee SangYi and Han JiHyun
A spin-off of “No Gain, No Love,” I feel like I have to finish the first kdrama before I can start on this one. But I’m looking forward to steamy scenes that horny writer will imagine herself in when she’s transported in her own story.
9. Judge From Hell
Starring Park Shin Hye and Kim Jae Young
I wanted to watch this one. The problem was I didn’t know where to access it. It was on neither Netflix nor Viki. Did anyone get to see it? Was it good?
10. Welcome to Samdalri
Starring Ji ChangWook and Shin HaeSun
Will look into this to see how it compares with “Hometown Cha Cha Cha.”
C. Will Finish…Eventually
1. Doctor Slump
Starring Park HyungSik and Park ShinHye
I don’t know why I didn’t finish this. I only have 4 episodes left.
2. Dog Knows Everything
Starring Lee SoonJae and three other senior actors
This is kinda slow. There’s a mystery in each episode that a talking neighborhood dog (yup, the dog speaketh!) guides Lee SoonJae to solve.
3. Knight Flower
Starring Honey Lee and Lee JongWon
I see this as a female-centric comedy more than a romcom. It’s about women empowerment. I want to see how she ends up escaping her virtuous widow life.
4. Love Next Door
Starring Jung HaeIn and Jung SoMin
Three more episodes and I’m done with this childhood-friends-turned-lovers story. Maybe I should watch this with “Doctor Slump” and do a comparative analysis. Lol.
5. Love Your Enemy
Starring Ju JiHoon and Jung YuMi
This was such a fun watch, really. I find myself guffawing in the most unladylike manner at Ju JiHoon’s exploits.
I just didn’t have time to finish the last two episodes because of Christmas.
6. Marry My Husband
Starring Park MinYoung and Na InWoo
Same here. I should finish this one. The cheesiness of the romance between the two leads was such a turn-off, though.
7. Miss Night and Day
Starring Jeong EunJi and Choi JinHyuk
Yes, yes. I’ll finish this, too, just to see how the story resolved the old-body-trapped-in-a-young-body problem.
8. No Gain, No Love
Starring Shin MinAh and Kim YoungDae
I don’t think they’re a good match but I still want to see the ending.
D. Finished:
Hurray! I finished watching one kdrama and one cdrama this year.
1. Queen of Tears
Starring Kim SooHyun and Kim JiWon
I finished this. But I didn’t write a review so it’s incomplete.
source: dramastream’s tumblr
2. Are You the One?
Starring Zhang WanYi and Wang ChuRan
I can’t believe that I finished this 40-episode cdrama but I did it. It was intriguing enough to hold my interest from start to finish.
source: fujunfuren’s tumblr
What about you? What kdramas did you finish, didn’t finish, put on the reserve list, will complete this year?
A very Happy New Year to you, @packmule3 and to all on BoD!
I watched very few dramas this year. Life was hectic for different reasons and I had a difficult time either concentrating on, or not getting bored with, K-dramas.
I enjoyed these: Wedding Impossible,
Like Flowers in Sand (despite 0 interest in ssireum),
Atypical Family (a very different feeling to this drama),
Lovely Runner,
My Sweet Mobster (agree it was too long),
Love Next Door,
Miss Night and Day (older actress rocked).
I wished to start or finish Mr Plankton,
Brewing Love,
What Comes After Love,
Queen of Tears.
Currently I’m re-watching for a wintery feeling the C-drama “The Road Home”.
Happy New Year, @Fern
I remember starting the cdrama “The Road Home.” I reached the episode when they shared (?) a yurt in the snowy terrain. They must have been dating then; I can’t remember now.
I’m in the mood for Jane Austen’s “Emma” (2009) starring Jonny Lee Miller and Romola Garai. But we’ve a party to go to tonight.
I just finished mass and it’s the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. 🙏🏼
Here’s wishing that 2025 may give us peace on earth, peace in our hearts and minds and most especially good health for everyone. ❤️❤️❤️
I didn’t make a list of the dramas I watched. I’ll start a list this year. 😃
Happy New Year! 🥳🥳🥳
PS. I love the gifs of Queen of Tears. 😍
Happy and Blessed New Year to Everyone!
I’m taking it easy this New Year. I may just go out for a leisurely lunch with family.
@pkml3 your question on Dear Hyeri had me trying to remember. Since it did not make a huge impression on me, I guess it was just a so-so watch. I did watch snatches of the beginning and the end again and now think it was a rather indulgent portrayal of how several characters dealt with brokenness, guilt, of distancing oneself from pain, of horrible parenting where the child is accused of something they had no control over, of compensation for inappropriate self-imposed requirements in the unhealthy way.
I feel it was just too much of that and an insufficient reason for all that suffering. A good, clear speaking up of one’s motives would have cleared most of the pain or prevented it. It did give some good pointers on a healthy break-up and dealing with friendships. I find that Hye Ri’s friendship with the other carpark attendant turned out to be the more normal and happy one, with forgiveness and good faith.
Was it worth the time? Only 50%. I stayed on by FFDing to see how things ended for the many weird and needy characters. It’s not a show I’ll have energy to rewatch. But there were some nice edits/camerawork that evoked hope or escape and stuff like that, which @WE and I appreciated. 🙂
Dear Friends, may 2025 be kinder to us!
@Fern, there are times like that. That said, you completed a lot more than me! 😉
@PackMule3, I have to confess that I have never had the love for Jane Austen or the Brönte Sisters that they deserve. Happy to read you will spend time with your friends!
@Agdr03, List or no list, it is good news you have things (in this case Dramas) that made you happy in 2024!
@GrowingBeautifully, I am happy just to read that you will spend time with your family, out of home. It is a blessing the implied betterment on your recovery.
Also, in a very Asian fashion: I am thankful for all of you, your Friendship, your insightful comments and hope 2025 makes us even closer!
Thanks for another year of Friendship!
I am distanced from K-Dramas and I haven’t tried C-Dramas yet. My last completed J-Drama was “Brush-Up Life” that can wholeheartedly recommend.
Both “Good Luck!! (2003)” and “Nice Flight!! (2022)” were excellent in their own right. If you would love to take a peek behind curtains on the Air Travel Industry those two are both educational and lovely.
“Dear Hyeri” made me dissapointed. Just watched until Episode 4. All that great directing and an incredible female lead (other actors were great too) wasted in a crappy, overambitious script.
At some point I couldn’t advance anymore. Being truthful, I felt it was a dense drama and was afraid I could be missing a lot, so the Posts on it (especially @WEnchanteur’s) made me continue up to that point.
-*-*-*-*-*-
Today I prepared the “Orange Herb Roasted Chicken” from AllRecipes, doubling the chicken stock and using dried herbs in my cupboard. Also added a carrot, potatoes and celery to the broth. It is great albeit I overcooked it and got a little bit dry. My cat still approved it!
Again, Happy New Year!!!
I cannot say I was a ‘good’ drama watcher, because I made use of the skip and FFD button a good deal. I had to get past many scenes in several dramas that I claim to have watched, hence I may not have watched thoroughly but just ‘some’. I feel I’m mainly in a ‘some’ relationship with dramas!!!
The minute scenes start to look contrived or predictable, I find myself wanting to jump ahead to see something new. Gone are the days when I’d patiently watch every second to get the full nuance of a scene. Perhaps the later batches of dramas are also made so that not every second needs to be watched?
For silly or weird romances I stayed on with Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale. I noted that it had OTT caricatures and the twisting of boy/girl roles. It was bizarre and different and a good change from what I’d just been watching (the very heavy Signal!)
I did like Wedding Impossible for another misplaced romance. So much chemistry, too little action LOL. I found that I did enjoy the character growth and the attempt to give everyone a forward trajectory. In my review I said , “I liked most of the execution and the way the plot unwound with its twists, except for the last 2 episodes. The music and production quality were great, there was a good mix of light/funny and angsty stuff, and the actors were lovely to watch. I’d give this a ‘B’ rating. If the last episode had been able to give us more sparks…”
Death’s Game really packed a punch. It was not an easy watch but worth it. A simple message on knowing how to treasure the one who really care and being in their shoes!
My opinion of Lovely Runner will surprise many who loved the drama. I kept quiet in the end and hardly commented because I saw gaping holes and other stuff that bothered me so much, no amount of romance and sweetness of the leads could cover it up for me. The whole time jump thing sort of went crazy and in the end nothing was needed of our leads because the TOD did the job for them.
My Sweet Mobster was another one I felt became soppy and indulgent. Unfortunately it also starred Kwon Yool whose look always bothers me as plasticky, artificial.
No Gain, No Love was alright and then forgettable. I did like the rapport between the older Shin Min Ah and whatshisname. I found Spice Up Our Love a waste of time.
Doctor Slump was forgettable for all that Park Shin Hye and Park Hyung Shik threw into it.
Knight Flower was fun, and yes, it was about woman empowerment in that difficult era when widows were to spend days in ‘prison’ to mourn their husbands (whom they did not even know). Honey Lee was good to watch.
Love Your Enemy wrapped with many good feels and neat bows all round. Forgiveness and friendship everywhere made for a great Warm Yuletide. Some of the best hilarious scenes were at the beginning and I don’t mind rewatching that part where Joo Ji Hoon fell bottom first into the dumpster again!
Marry My Husband was somehow better in the beginning. Most of the time I just wanted the horrible twosome to suffer. I didn’t care for the romance but just went along with it.
Queen of Tears was interesting in a makjang sort of way. I wonder if it would have had so much traction if not for Kim Soo Hyun. I just wanted all the preview romantic scenes to be filled out but they never were. They were just scenes of the past and we hardly got any real romantic scenes in the present. Still the use of the round screen was interesting to create the snowy forest scene.
I’ll see if I have any notes on cdramas below.
My dear @FGB, how lovely to see you on New Year’s Day! Thank you too for your friendship and great insights on the jdoramas you’ve watched.
I enjoyed the jdorama, Unmet. The fact that despite not remembering recent events, the skills of the past remained and the person also remained true to herself offers forgetful people like myself much hope. The love of that doctor was one of the truest I’ve ever encountered. Not the cloying, sappy type, but the very practical and proactive love that got his beloved on her feet again. The sweet medical team that became family too bring tears to my eyes. I like how jdoramas are short and to the point and that their characters grow even in their few episodes of time.
Your chicken still sounds pretty good to me. I might opt for some Indian Thosai or something light for lunch since I’ll be going to a fusion Asian-Western restaurant.
I’m definitely slowly getting better and will bravely attempt new horizons, never knowing if there’s enough in place for the slightly disabled. 😅
Did not finish “Unmet” despite loving the female lead to pieces, maybe because I loved her that much and found the wolves around her more ominous as they were preying on someone not even aware they existed.
All in all good new on your end! 😀
My Cdramas Watched List. MDL records 9 cdramas that I completed in 2024. I won’t mention all of them, but instead some things that stand out in my memory about some of them.
The best, to me, in terms of production value, story, music and acting was Lost You Forever 2.
Next in my rankings will be To the Wonder for the sheer difference and beauty of the rustic Xinjiang landscape, stark storytelling style, great Kazakh actors and simple but effective plot. I don’t mind rewatching this one.
Snowfall was interesting with a Chinese vampire and a blind girl in Republican Era China with the military and strange supernatural powers abroad. Again the ending left something to be desired but the acting was great.
By the same Writer of Road Home, Amidst a Snowstorm of Love was interesting more for the Billiards competitions. The romance was the usual oversweet stuff – where the guy can’t take his eyes off the girl, and this Writer makes the guy do all the heavy lifting in everything. He pays for everything, he never takes any help from the girl, he makes sacrifices left and right for 1 day to be with her etc. The couple looked sweet which was a big draw.
Regeneration was another cdrama that felt different and more like a Western whodunit. The beginning was intriguing and I watched it for the twists mainly but the ending didn’t quite live up to the beginning.
To kill time I rewatched Under the Skin 1 (2022) which was great.
I’m in the midst of watching Under the Skin 2 now, which has become more bizarre, but still retains my interest and is highly watchable.
Blossom was fun for 15 or so episodes but felt predictable and so I’ve paused or stopped. It’s going to be the case of the FL always knowing the right thing to do and say. Too many torture scenes overall!
FIN
@packmule3, yes, the leads in The Road Home were dating by that scene but couldn’t do anything about it because his subordinate co-workers were in other tents around them, lol. I loved their love story and their faith in each other.
I have never seen the Emma with Romola Garai. You and others have mentioned it before, so I will put it on my 2025 list.
An Austen-themed segue’: There is a house in a UK charity auction that would make a great setting for a Georgian/Regency romance like Emma or Persuasion. Or a place for Austen fans to congregate. It is in Bath, has beautiful gardens, and is absolutely stunning. 😍 (But undoubtedly Listed. Been there, done that, never again. 😑)
@Growing Beautifully and @FGB4877, you reminded me of some other dramas I saw and liked. Thank you. Perhaps my year wasn’t so drama barren after all. ☺️
I really loved ‘To the Wonder’ and rewatched many episodes. A quirky and beautiful story. 🐺🏹🐎🐫🏔️⛰️🗻🌄
‘Snowfall’ also hit different for me. I loved the historic setting, props and costumes as much as the acting.
‘Amidst a Snowstorm of Love’, yes the burdens were all on the ML and he seemed to have miraculous abilities to land on his feet in all circumstances. But sweet and snowy.
Finally, the J-dorama ‘Where Does the Sea Begin’. Probably fairly realistic in terms of relationships, rather than Hallmark/Harlequin type. But so well acted and set. I loved seeing the various reactions to grief and the development of the characters.
@Fern and @pkml3, because I also happened to be in an Austen mood, I picked up Emma (2009) today. It was delightful. I’ve watched other versions of Emma before and even the comparison of Emma adaptations. I do agree that Mr Knightley was too much an older brother to Emma for too much of the mini-series, and the romance could have been a bit more evident, but this Emma was really charming and likable.
An evening well spent!
Is it the Jonny Lee Miller and Romola Garai version, @GB? Did you see their dance scene? When he couldn’t look at her and blinked his eyes. That was a great nuanced acting.
I also like that scene when they had to inform her father about their relationship and he held her hand behind her back.
Where did you watch it?
I have the DVDs but too bad ipads and my current laptop doesn’t have a DVD slots anymore.
Pingback: What Are We Watching in January 2025? – Bitches Over Dramas
Happy New Year to @packmule3 and everyone here!
I’ve been absent from this blog for a while because life has become very busy, with lots of frequent travdls, making me an inconsistent drama watcher.
In 2024, I only managed to complete 2 Kdramas and 3 Cdramas, the rest I dropped mid-way as I had to prioritise. I also noticed a trend in my viewing preferences shifting to more historical Cdramas and finding contemporary Kdramas a bit run-of-the-mill and repetitive.
Like @GB, I liked ‘Wedding Impossible’ at the beginning because of the lead couple and ‘Death’s Game’ because of the unique plot. But I don’t think these dramas have rewatch value for me.
The dramas that I really liked and rewatched were 3 Cdramas – ‘The Double’, ‘The Story of Kunning Palace’ and ‘The Blossom’. All are historicals with court intrigue and rebirths.
Here’s hoping 2025 brings us more dramas to relish!
My favorite – year end lists! Here is mine:
Dramas I finished (everything else I dropped)
Wedding Impossible clever and new actors until it fell off rails in the end
Marry My Husband – great acting by the husband and the frenemy.
Miss Night and Day – it was nice to see the lead from Reply 1998 again.
My Sweet Mobster – I enjoyed the silliness
Wedding Impossible – clever and newer kdrama actors and then a terrible finish
Dr. Slump – okish
C-Dramas that I remember watching:
Amidst a Snowstorm of Love – with a lot of fast forwarding. Talk about staring …. I enjoyed the romance – it could have made better use of the Finish locale.
My absolute favorite drama of the year in any language was the cdrama To The Wonder – loved every minute of it and was completely enchanted. I started reading the book it is based on “My Altay”
I agree that this version of Emma is the best Emma (other than Clueless). It has a beautiful score too.
Happy New Year!
@pkml3
RE: Emma
Yes, I specially looked for the Romola Garai version, realising that I had not seen the whole thing. I really liked that it is a mini-series so that there was time to be immersed in that tranquil world and get to enjoy those characters.
Yes, I noticed the dance and his eyes, the moment he realised his feelings. It was very low key. I felt that something stirred in Emma as well, she might have been vaguely aware. In any case, she played that piece of music of the dance on the piano the next day, as if to relive the dance.
The reviewer who compared the adaptations felt that the 2020 adaptation made the romance clearer earlier, also at that dance. In this 2009 verison, I noticed how when Mr Knightley was going to say goodbye, he almost kissed her hand but thought better of it and ran off.
Perhaps this version’s Emma had her epiphany a bit late in the last episode, but I believe the book had that as well. Mr Knightley could perhaps have been a little less brotherly earlier, however I feel this 2009 version did well enough in the romance overall.
I was in a hurry to watch this and didn’t search for it at the sites my husband would have recommended. I simply went to YouTube and bore with the repeated breaks every 3 minutes!!! to get through the 4 episode series. It was not what I’d recommend if one wants to watch every expression and scene, since with each break, the screen was blocked by ads for the other YT stuff, but it was watchable although annoying. There are also longer edits of the main scenes that can be easily rewatched.
I deliberately got a refurbished PC that still has a DVD slot. I don’t use it but I do have DVDs that I could watch. How technology changeth!
Hi @FGB4877 👋🏻
That is so true, the dramas that I watched did give me joy. ☺️ Some sadness and things I didn’t want to see too. 😊
This year I’m definitely making a list and see what it’s like at the end of the year.
