@GB, I’ll be busy next weekend (it’s my family’s annual ski trip) so let me release this Open Thread now before I forget.
Enjoy the rewatch!
How quickly the weekend approacheth! Thanks @pkml3 for this early thread. I should do a rewatch before the rewatch!
It is early here and I am reading last week’s comments.
No fresh snow today! But always groceries to do!
Last Saturday morning was a neighbourhood party! Everyone and their dog was out enjoying the snow, shovelling the snow, pullling their children on togaggons, ice skating!
The first big snow of the season. This year we may actully get a winter!
@SD @GB
I have ssamjang and bean paste that have been in my fridge for months now. I do use a lot of bean paste but never quickly enough.
About the mother, noble idiocy is even more problematic in time trvel dramas.
I do not need to rewatch the ending of the last episode. It was so strong and your comments brought it back to me very clearly.
I watched the first few minutes of 8 to orient myself and yes this woman is vile. The actress playing her is very good in this beginning scene.
Hi All, I’m going to take a nap. If I’m late back, please start without me!!!
@GB Enjoy your nap!
If I recall correctly this episode Has a lot in it to talk about. On the other hand we may be too busy watching it to talk about it!
@MM my nap was shortened by a talkative spouse. Anyway I’m here a bit earlier than planned.
Yes, Ep 8 really had a lot going on, lots more revelations and another cliffhanger of an ending.
We’ll see if our number of comments drops compare to other weeks. That’s the sign we were watching avidly and forgot to type!
Hi GB.
I am here a little early as well. @MM our snow keeps melting, then we get hit with Arctic blasts on brittle brown grass. Temps falling today, will hit -15F in the next few days. Cold since we are not used to it anymore.
Hi @WE! Glad to see you.
Are we more or less leaning into getting to watch a Park Hye Ryun drama next?
As for today… we start NOW!!!
Hi @WE, @GB, @MM. Guess I was not all that early! I am starting now.
Hello SD. Yep, it’s cold here too.
We start from the awesome cliffhanger.
So let see, it seems SJ is not dead. Or not sure.
We begin with a pretty aerial view of treetops, a pretty house, a pretty woman but a bloody Kim. His pretty wife is only interested in whether he’s dead yet and is annoyed that he isn’t.
He hears all this … and we see his memories of his interactions with his wife, Hyun Chae.
@SD
Today it is raining on old dirty snow. The ice rink inour park may not do so well.
@GB, as a lazy solution, yeah. ^^
Still, she’s a so amazing writer that is worth it.
Flashback with SJ and wife.
She’s a bit harsh…
@ GB her tone of voice when she asks if he is dead is stone cold.
@WE, we see Hyun Chae sensitive about her past where her history is different from what she painted it for Kim. Poor little Da Bin hears the quarrel and comforts herself.
HC is not afraid to confront Kim and acknowledge the truth.
The argument scene was gooood!
I like most of the scene with his wife.
She’s pretty and doesn’t disappoint about nastyness.
@MM She has a cold beauty. I’ve seen her acting before and she can be much more animated, but here she’s just icy.
AR calls but no answer. She can guess it’s serious! He can’t miss those calls. If he doesnt answer, she can guess something serious happened to him… and so take a decision, anyone, to change time. But she doesnt know what happened to him. ARG, what to do??!
The couple fight scene. She is so manipulative psychologically
HC flushes away the porridge the way she has flushed away their marriage in her mind.
Backwards a month, and Ae Ri can’t reach Kim anymore.
For all that Do Kyun is a villain, he’s no killer, unlike HC and Killer Lee.
@GB, yeah, she does well the ice.
I just like pretty bad women in drama. 😀
So I wrote one in my own kdrama, ofc. But not the icy genre, quite the opposite.
@MM HC shows her ability to act the role of aggrieved mother and wife. It should give Seo Do Kyun the jitters to be with a woman like her who can do what they planned to do to Kim.
@WE, I read your dramas with interesting females. All inspired by Kim Tae Hee?
She uses his weakness about status to make him the one in the wrong.
In one of the earlier episodes I was sympathizing with her feelings about being a show wife. Interesting change in perpective
@GB, I agree, Seo DK should be asking himself now why he likes this woman. I am not sure he ever does though.
In an effort to push Kim to take the kidnapping of Da Bin seriously, AR puts up the wanted poster, but this will cause her a lot of grief.
Still, this and her other efforts did get Kim to bring in the police earlier to catch the kidnapper.
@GB, not just one.
I don’t re-use twice the same actress.
But I always choose actors I like best for main roles. Or in some cases, actors people rec to me, like you did for Alien surgeon.
Did you read some parts of W2 since that time? I didn’t make progress after ep42. I think I’ll do it in one row the day I go for it and try to write until the end of the drama (not using pictures until it’s done).
Now we get the anti-kidnapping squad in action. Even the reluctant Soo Jung is helping out.
@SD, that’s the strange thing about Seo. He’s so starry-eyed in love he can’t see how dangerous the woman is. What she does to others, she can do to him. But he just refuses to go there in his mind.
Now, it becomes more complex because the two time are joining and AR see how start the drama, spying the kidnaping. But it will be crazy when he gets the phone. I don’t remember that part, but it promises something great.
@WE, I came across the link to your work and thought to myself that I might go back to read… if you’ve made more changes I may. Alien Surgeon feels like I read it so long ago, it must have been changed by now.
I am out at a friend’s, will miss the party.
@WE, I like the before and during kidnapping scene with the violin music. The music accompanies the action, the stress, the fears.
We cut to Seo looking in on Kim. He hates the thought of having to kill him.
So we get the expressive violin music of the reluctance in his mind.
Will miss you @FF!
Hi FF, have a good time with friends!
And thanks to come here to say hello. 😉
Seo in the past is washing his hands, waiting for Da Bin to be taken away. I wonder what triggers her to run out of the room at the right time and to go all the way downstairs. It’s as if she had been prepped to do it. She knew where to go and Kim Jin Ho would have been waiting for her at the place she ended up in.
AR lost something on the ground, but I’m not sure what.
@WE it was the ear piece she needed to hear her friends’ instructions and info with and to speak with. So she was a little lost and they did not know what she was doing.
Fortunately Killer Lee does not see Geon Wook. Stress filled music for the run to save Da Bin and the time when Seo is about to kill Kim.
With the failure of the kidnapping all the weeks of what happened that we saw and know of, disappear.
The police come and catch the wrong person.
It’s a big time change, but I wonder where is AR phone. And why DG saw the time phenomenon ? He was in contact with the phone ?
Now Seo is desperate to know how Ae Ri came to know and to be in the right place at the right time. He starts his investigations with police help.
@WE, I also was wondering how Seo got to be one of the 2 who could see the time difference and realise that he was outside that time, looking at it. He did have contact with the phone when he took it away from Kim, but I’m not sure if that was enough to give him the ability to be outside the time change and see it happening.
@GB, I’ll send you a message on MDL about stuff on my blog and give few informations about changes.
@WE, I do not understand why DG sees the time change either. His contact with the phone is later I think. But it is super cool that he does. Right as he is committing murder he watches his victim start to disappear then watches himself disintegrate.
The police cannot think of time differences in the phone records, so they decide that Ae Ri wrote the messages to herself as if she and Kim were writing to each other.
HC is angry that Kim called in the cops instead of being pleased that he took care to protect Da Bin after AR bothered them.
Killer Lee is all for killing off Kim Jin Ho and anyone else who knows about their plot. But Seo is against it.
@GB, I missed this moment, but yep, contact with the phone is what made him “time aware”. I think it’s the trick already used in few time-travel dramas we watched before.
The sister is our Cullie, she can’t believe it!
Seo watches himself disappear from the scene!
He doesn’t check if the loto numbers are exact?
I missed how the kidnapping team shows up. How did they know to be there?
AR discovers than previous version of SJ isn’t a kind guy. 🙂
WHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTT ????
Previous SJ starts to get memory merging with his alternate timeline? Huge!
She’s an adorable wife, but only with DG. -_-
@MM The kidnapping team? You mean Seo and Killer Lee and Kim Jin Ho? They were more or less on the spot and Kim JH came from home to be there at the hotel.
I see now. SJ finds the poster on his door. At least the kidnapping attempt is foiled but now there is a new problem.
An amazing episode
@WE, I wonder why Kim does not get the past memories of Ae Ri in particular but of the others instead. So irritating that he does not believe her.
That’s just part 1 of the episode @MM.
AR misses the chance to contact Kim on the phone… but she does not know that he won’t be able to answer her anyway.
I wonder why, after the change in the past that Kim is not contactable…. maybe because Da Bin has not been kidnapped, he has no reason to call AR.
@WE, it seems that Kim does not have the right phone number yet??? Since Da Bin did not get kidnapped, he does not need to contact AR on that number. Now when she tries to reach him, he’s not there.
@GB, police said he has the number since yesterday.
Now the kidnapping happens again?
It triggers more merging memory from previous timeline.
@GB So much in one episode! The scene where she is taken by the police felt like a cliffhanger. Now on to part 2.
My tension quota for an episode is all used up.
This episode is so complicated… I wonder when and how Kim will remember and be able to contact AR… it seems it only happens when he needs her help.
He recalls the policeman and other people but he cannot remember that he used to call AR!!!!
Well, no kidnapping, but just loosing sight of the daugher, so it triggers the merging memory. We can notice that his emotional response is more coming from the merged memory than himself now.
AR calls in the future but… No one answer.
AR is crazy in this episode. She control nothing about her emotion, but it’s her character too.
Seo meets up with the cold HC who’s all warmth towards him. He’s like a pussycat with her. Seo’s behaviour with HC seems to be as if he’s afraid of displeasing her.
@WE, yes when AR goes a little crazy she can commit murder. We recall that in the past timeline, she killed Geon Wook.
Fortunately AR’s mother sees the news and takes action before AR goes too crazy. The past Kim is totally unrelenting and won’t be lenient.
We get to see more of HC’s dad… a blackmailing creep.
Kim gets to take care of Da Bin himself. Now he finds how easy it is to lose the child. She’s really quite precocious on how she runs off by herself.
We know why the wife i so angry but he does not have any idea when a moment ago in drama time he knew!
Kim finally remembers the first real kidnapping of Da Bin. But he still won’t change his mind about letting AR go.
AR can’t reach him on the phone yet.. it’s been 3 times that she’s tried and 4 nights altogether that they have not made contact at 10.33pm.
@MM, we are a bit confused because the future Kim is no longer shown to us… we only see AR and the past Kim.
I believe we need another episode to know what happened to the future Kim.
We enter the painful part when the villain becomes aware of the truth and so will create even more problems, using the same advantages. Yeah, like in SJJ time travel dramas.
@WE, Which painful part do you mean?
I’m at the part where Seo realises that Killer Lee has been doing things without telling him so now he cannot trust Lee. It means that Lee has another boss besides himself.
@GB I am sure he is afraid of displeasing her. He is completely under her spell. We see the beginning of her seducing him manipulatively, after the initial meet in the bar. She has always been manipulative with him, from the beginning.
The cliffhanger is mysterious.
I don’t remember if we saw what happens to SJ after he disappears from the previous scene.
But for some reasons, he’s now in a car accident with his wife and daughter.
@MM, she’s always made use of her looks to her advantage. Seo was such an easy target.
@GB, maybe Lee obey to the old president?
I mean, now Seo will understand soon everything about time-change phenomenon, and could use it for his own benefit.
@WE, yes, until now we have not seen the future Kim and his family. We’ve been watching the past Kim with AR in the past. So the next episodes should tell us how he ends up in that car accident.
@WE, yes, I believe in the end there were only 4 persons who believed in the time-change. AR, Geon Wook, Kim and Seo. Until the end, I don’t know if Soo Jung ever believed in it.
This show has many instances of people who died and then time changes their fate and they are alive again.
Ae Ri
Geon Wook
Ae Ri’s mother
Hyun Chae (1 time… I think there may be another time)
Da Bin
Kim himself almost died
Yeah, what would be a definitive problem is a death in the past time.
Now, it’s time to go, and I wish you a good week.
@GB, I made you a PM on MDL.
One of the aspects of this show that is really intriguing is the short time frame between the past and the future. The future changes so wildly (people who are dead survive, people who were in jail are not, people who are fugitives are not). Because there is not a long time frame as in Nine: Nine Times or Signal the effect on us the viewer feels more immediate as well, a roller coaster.
Both of these last two episodes end with SJ bloodied and near death. We, as the viewer, do not know if SJ will be able to contact Han Ae Ri again, or not. And if not, how can AR change the future!
Just like Dynamite BTS in pizza shop
@SD, I feel that poor AR does a lot more in this time connection with Kim. She goes through a lot more than he does to save him, his family, etc. He did do what he could in the future, but other than ending up almost dead, or almost arrested, he did not suffer quite as many mishaps as AR.
Yes the short span of time in which the changes take place really makes this Show very tight. So much keeps changing and the past we knew is no more.
@MM What are you referring to? BTS had dynamite explode in a pizza shop? Is there a connection with today’s episode?
not really a connection. I noticed the song playing and remembered the rooftop scene in Marry My Husband where they both realize they are from the future because they both remember BTS music that has not yet been released, namely Just Like Dynamite.
@GB, I think AR and Kim SJ suffer nearly as much. His is early on when he believes his family has died, and involves a lot more emotional feelings of guilt. AR is always trying her hardest and that gets her in these situations (and maybe her death) and the emotional suffering that goes with that, but she does not have any feelings of guilt. SJ knows he did not pay enough attention to Da Bin and spoke harshly to her. As he starts to remember his multiple timelines, he responds to that emotional feeling of guilt, as in this episode when he cries when he finds Da Bin rather than scolding her for wandering off, which is what he would have done before.
The emotional suffering that each of these characters feel is on par, I think. Certainly the acting is. Both actors are excellent!
Have a good week, everyone!

I have not watched this. Anyone else?
Seems like the type of time travel we have all been interested in.
@GB Do we have direction for our next watch or are we still considering?

Hi @pkml3, I trust you had a great ski trip as a good break after the ‘Shindig’. Was the snow firm enough to ski on but not so hard that it hurt to fall on?
Yes, this is a gentle reminder to open the next Kairos Thread. Thank you in advance!
