Love Scout: Eps 3 & 4 Open Thread

The thread is open.

I forgot about this scene. I liked what EunHo said about restaurants are “homes,” not “stores.” It’s food for thought.

Remember I’m not Korean, but Google is my friend. I believe the word he’s referring to is “yoritjip” or 요릿집.  “Jip” or 집 means house. There’s also “bulgogi-jip” which is a barbecue restaurant, “bunsik-jip” which is a noodle restaurant, and “maeku-jip,” a pub or beer garden. (source: 90daykorean.com)

I also liked this scene because as he was imparting a little nugget of information to her, he was ladling food out for her. It escaped her notice that he was tending to her needs with a bit more familiarity than usual. I don’t know whether his diversionary tactic was deliberate or not, but it almost worked on her.

Let’s enjoy the show!

  1. So in Korean “Pancake Store” wouldn’t be used but IHOP and Waffle House get full approval. 😜

Yes, he was not exactly patronising JY, but he was saying something that he might also have thought to say to Byeol if she weren’t eating at a restaurant. I was surprised that she didn’t snap his head off, but she almost stayed and ate.

  2. I am in!!! I went through episode 1 and 2 in straight seating. LOL!

It will be a good ‘class’ because all of our top notcher/analyzer are on board. I’ll be seating at the back and just enjoy it with you all. 🙂

I like Han Ji-Min in this role. She’s perfect for it and as for Lee Joon Hyuk, I’ve never remembered him in any dramas I’ve watched but I like him here. That’s what you call paying attention. 🙂

I feel her pain whenever she hits her head or legs over a desk or a cabinet. But I feel like having a serious talk with her with how she throws her bag, ALL THE TIME. LOL! Whenever she does it, my mouth opens up. hahahahah

Byeol is cute and same with her bestie boy Seo-Joon. 🙂

PS. That food spread looked so delicious.

  3. @agdr03 – isn’t EH’s attentiveness attractive!

Like you, I have no memory of LJH but he is memorable in this role.

    The children are delightful!

  4. @Kate, very attractive indeed. 🙂 I mean, that door annoyed the hell out of JY but he fixed it the way she wanted it to open. That saved her a lot of banging and noise.

It’s my first kdrama for 2025. Hopefully it will be a good one. I haven’t even started on Lee Min Ho’s drama. I should. 🙂

  5. @agdr03 – it feels like it will be a goodie!

I am watching Episode 3 and thought of you at a particularly funny moment…Priceless. you’ll see what I mean!

  6. Ah, Episode 3 seems like several episodes in one – so much happens and little or nothing is just random. I’m going to rewatch parts of it. Slight spoiler below.

Director Woo (Kim Do Hoon), the OTT and elusive employee at Peoplez, has come out of the woodwork more. Potentially jealous of the relationship between EH and JY, he is also the concerned younger brother of the head teacher at the kindergarten attended by Byeol and Seo-Joon. Seo-Joon’s author-mother Jung Soo Hyun seems intrigued by him. She insulted him SO much by mistakenly calling him abeoji. Her comeback made me laugh. I’ve liked this actor since seeing him in Doctor John. He’s good at slightly on the edge, sensitive characters.

So far, EH is almost too perfect except that he can’t handle spicy tteokbokki. I thought it was interesting that he could say to the sous chef that one can’t rely on another person completely. He is right, but in the first episode, he was so emphatic about loyalty. Thus, I was a bit surprised and wondered if he was changing or if he was fitting his encouragement to the situation at hand.

I wonder if the rumours about the sous-chef and the head chef could be a premonition to the development of EH and JY’s relationship?

I look forward to the analysis. The framing of the coffee discussion was particularly good, I thought, as was the umbrella scene.

I liked that Byeol initiated a private relationship with JY at the bookstore and that JY is responding well to her after a slightly off-putting start.

  7. @Fern hello hello!

    Dearest people of BoD,

If I have to watch this drama, I need to buy Viki subscription because Netflix is not streaming it in my region. Would you say it’s worth it ?
Of course, no one can guarantee how the drama will pan out in final episodes, given so many dramas – not just WTPR have disappointed us later on – start strong and then completely fizzle out.

However, given first few eps ? Pretty please advise?

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Arihsi, I’m tempted to say: let me watch Ep 4 before I advise LOL, however I know I’m going to keep watching until the end.

The production quality is consistent, the feel of the show is assured. I was mentioning the colour, the fuzziness or clarity and so was @pkml3 and we see in Ep 3 that there’s more cleared up and more understanding between the characters, and thus great clarity in colour and picture quality overall.

I like that in Dodam Bookstore, it’s always a whimsical orangey pink, and that Byeol has met JY. I laughed to see that they are actually quite alike in temperament, and in anticipation that our EH will have his work cut out for him, paying equal attention to 2 such females in his orbit!! It’s a hopeful thing (and it was something that did occur to me might happen) that the 2 females have initiated a relationship. Whether that works out better or worse later, is something I want to see.

We’re slowly learning more about young Director Wu and I wonder if he’ll be the one to end up with Su Yeon (EH’s neighbour who takes care of the kids).

We still get to see great camerawork and editing with smart scene transitions and the framing of our characters just so… to tell us how they are more in sync.

It’s nice to see more of JY’s smiles (at first I wrote that she hardly smiled, and she did require that her staff didn’t smile or so said the voice of MA). It seems EH by being his normal, slightly petty and every ready self, is able to make JY smile and even laugh. That pretty pink frilly cat umbrella!

As usual, I need to rewatch closely to see all the little gems that I miss on a first watch, but I may wait until Episode 4 is out.

So what do you think @Arihsi? Was that actually non-advice? LOL.

  9. On board the choo choo train of Love Scout!!

@Arihsi – Check out kdramahood.com – it is free and had ads.

Also Kisskh.co is also airing it. Free too. If you get too many ads, feel free to install a couple of adblockers.

  10. @Arihsi – Just forgot to mention that I was streaming it from USA. I have also streamed it while in India. So, it works both places. Don’t know which part of the world you are from, so, check it out.

  11. @Arihsi, Hello, hello, hello! Good afternoon. I have the same problem. I had a Viki subscription and hope to have another, but I was waiting to see if they offer a discount for Lunar New Year. @Kate suggested Dailymotion as a viewing site and it worked for episode 3. I didn’t even get an advert, but I think that is an anomaly.

How are you? Well and thriving, I hope.

  12. @Growing Beautifully, you got your wish that Byeol is able to inspire JY! And yes, their temperaments are similar – both persistent, even to the point of not appearing for food when they are absorbed in a task. Good and maybe not, as you say. I hope that they can get closer in a natural way before meeting as Apa’s boss and EH’s daughter.

  13. @GB your advice helped ! Hee hee. I’m anyway gravitating towards getting the subscription.

@angelwingssf thank you for the suggestions! I’m very scared of visiting free-to-view sites due to variety of risks. I use the same mobile device for office and home – have office emails open on it etc. and my phone is the primary place I watch dramas post midnight. So, I feel safer with a subscription site.

@Fern so happy to have you onboard this drama ! We connected after soooo long !

  14. I am looking forward to watching today’s episode before I comment.

A personal anecdote though. When Covid hit and I started working at home I needed to get my home office organized. I was inspired by the Ikea furnishings that I kept seeing in korean and chinese dramas, especially the wall organizers. I noticed similar ones in the scene in this show in the book writers room.

I have noticed the carpet I bought, in one drama and the coffee table was featured in the hospital scene in WtPRs.

I am also frequently inspired by the colour palettes od dramas . As well, One historical cdrama had me wanting to buy more china, as though I need more!

    I could go on……. clothes jewellry, …..more china…

Mostly I am just tempted!!! And enjoy the colours and designs.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, looks like you’re susceptible to the subtle PPL LOL.

I won’t get to see the episode until tomorrow. But I trust it to be good!

  16. The only.
Time I conceded to PPL Was in my desire to buy myself a dyson as a retirement present. Turns out the last few years. They have not been very reliable.Vil so I ended up buying a samsung.

  17. Gah I am still invested after Ep3&4. 😂😂😂. Such a good SLOW burn 🔥.

Ep3 should be titled Conscience or Ethics or something similar. There’s a thread going through that about JY’s consistency when it comes to this. She may have regretted the consequences and fall out of her past work decisions (which resulted in her boss’s suicide) but she never faltered about the actual decision she made. Her moral compass stayed true. Her decision was mirrored in the way she approached the chef/sous chef and their lack of transparency about his wrist.

Loved the tteokbokki scene. JY is so competitive. She sees the Level 5 challenge and it’s on!! EH sees no necessity to compete to prove himself so he’s not embarrassed to wimp out. His cheeks when he sucked those grape lollies 😂😂. I love a man who doesn’t take himself too seriously. He carries his daughter’s pink hair ties and her frilly umbrella? He’s completely comfortable in his skin as single dad, totally unapologetic. Also loved that he didn’t press her on explanations. And the drive round the block so she could sleep longer on the car? Sigh…what’s not to love?

Ep4 I would title Revelations. There’s a few curveballs here. Like the fact that writer is not the biological mom of the boy. He’s her nephew. Boy doesn’t know. Kudos to her for stepping up to the plate when needed. We find out that Director Woo (I like his character the least) does actually like JY (although I am not sure if it’s because daddy dear paired them up and he’s just gone along with it). Still his timing is off. JY has a drunken night and she kisses EH? Only in KDrama can someone sleep in that upright position and not drool 🤤😂😂😂. But looks like (from the preview) that he’s going to pretend nothing happened unless she brings it up. Gah, I love this man. What a gentleman. We also get a flashback about EH’a past? He’s an orphan from a fire? If this follow true KDrama format (where everything is somehow linked) then it’s likely that JY’s father rescued him in the past and died as a result in that fire.

  18. I laughed out loud when JY “accidentally” made 2 cups of coffee 😂😂😂.

  19. I never thought I would get pointers from a KDrama but when EH made a little tent from the chopstick wrapper? To use as a chopstick rest? Genius. 🥰. Guess he didn’t have time to do this? 😂😂😂

    https://savorjapan.com/contents/more-to-savor/origami-chopstick-wrapper-swan-instructions-in-11-easy-steps/

  20. Good evening, @nrllee. I think you are correct about the links between the characters. To be honest, my heart sank a bit when JY’s memories of the fire came up. It reminded me of ‘Secret Garden’ and ‘Atypical Family.’ I don’t know why I don’t like too many coincidences, except that it means the OTP is pre-ordained rather than acting on their own volition.

As to Director Woo, at this point, I think he likes JY, but isn’t in love with her. I’m not even sure he has a crush on her – otherwise he would spend more time at work. To me, she is far out of his league but that is probably why Woo’s father is pushing for them to be together despite their age/maturity difference. I hope that EH’s presence doesn’t fan the flames.

  21. @Kate, I just finished watching both episodes and I did laugh at his pinkfong umbrella. The way he proudly took it out of his bag. 😂

I also laughed when he asked her if she was awkward with him and she said yes. This was after they played basketball. 😂 EH was dumbfounded. 😂

If there’s one thing that I really like about EH it’s that he feeds her. He makes sure that she eats something. ☺️ The effort for a teokbokki/ramen/cheese/hotdog combo at a convenience store. 👍🏻

It’s a good first time meeting for JY and Byeol, nice to see them hanging around. 😊

I wonder if those green grape candy are nice. I’ll get some when I go to kmall next time. 😃

  22. Boooh! I posted a comment last night but it disappeared. 😞

@Kate was it the pinkfong umbrella that made you think of me? ☺️ I thought he took out the umbrella so proudly. 😂

I love that EH keeps giving JY food. I mean the teokbokki/ramen/hotdog with cheese on top looked amazing yeah? 😋

I found it funny too that after giving her time to walk and play basketball to take her mind off her rival from the other company, she had the gall to say they’re not close and that she’s awkward with him. 😂

She’s certainly getting used to him if she’ll kiss him by episode 5 while she’s drunk. 😃

I asked my cousin to buy me the green grape candy in Seoul after seeing it and she said it’s actually nice. 😊

@nrllee, @Fern, It’s taken me forever but I’ve finally re-watched these 2 episodes with many interruptions. I mentioned before that Eun Ho is a likely candidate for the BOD Boyfriend Hall of Fame… let’s see after a few more episodes if he continues to wow us!

I liked that while in Ep 1 and 2, we are introduced sufficiently to the 2 more main characters and only slightly to the other 2 less main characters at a rather fast pace, in Ep 3 and 4 we slow down to find out more in greater detail than what I’d normally expect to get.

Similarly while the first 2 episodes gave us how romance might be depicted, we now get scenes of a CEO and Secretary at work, and we find out more about young punk Dir Wu and Author Su Hyun.

For starters, we find out how a headhunter with integrity works when faced with info omissions, bad choices of candidates, a degree of falsehood, etc, while trying to meet the needs of their client, and still offer what is best to the candidates.

I really liked that JY took on Sous Chef Hae In instead of leaving her in the lurch. I feel that Hae In’s desperate cry to EH outside the car where JY waited, and EH’s advice to Hae In impressed JY enough that she decided to take Hae In on as a candidate.
Reciprocally, JY’s natural sense of justice has won EH over to the good work that headhunters do. Hence when they shared a game, a meal or the umbrella, it felt like EH genuinely felt closer to JY and more respectful of her. Unfortunately, JY seems to be lacking in interpreting warm human interactions LOL.

While I’m not sure we needed more examples of how EH is a great people-person (and how JY isn’t), episode 4 also showcased how EH initiated breaching the rift between colleagues. I was not sure to be aghast or amused that the directors ganged up on JY to effect a welcome party that she thought totally unnecessary, but found herself agreeing to anyway.

While in the task of “termination through betrayal, scheming, and baseless accusations” the scheming and ill-opinion seems to take on a life of its own, in the opposite process of patching up a relationship, much scheming was also required. When at the welcome party table, Manager Kim’s ‘f*rt’ joke backfired and Gyeong Hwa snorted loudly, the others quickly turned that into ‘her laugh’ and said that she had the same sense of humour as Mgr Kim so as to heal the breach. It was a betrayal of her real intent, actually, but it worked to make them friends again. It was a class act by the whole company, based on a bit of deceit! Perhaps the end justified the means?

If there was something that I felt was wanting in these two episodes, was more editing. The previous tighter scenes were lacking, as if the editor went on sudden leave. I felt that certain scenes were unnecessarily left uncut and that both the episodes would have done better with shorter scenes and just 1 hour instead of extending several minutes past the hour.

  24. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3, you mentioned meals and restaurants above, and how EH says that food is close to home. We can see that EH is the home-maker sort of guy. Not only does he cook well, he plates his meals attractively. He’s the one buying in pizza for the staff, stew for the home and of course, he feeds JY well even if it’s just at a convenience store.

The scenes I enjoyed the most were those where Byeol and JY showed how alike they are. Both are ‘real’ bosses in how they order people about. Even JY went obediently when Byeol indicated to follow her! Both hate to lose. The effect of a humiliation instead of bringing either of them down, was the catalyst that got them working extra hard and becoming stronger. Byeol got down to seriously learning how to read (and write) to impress JY, while JY built up her own headhunting company to rival and surpass Career Way.

I find it a bit ironic that JY calls her company Peoplez when she’s so task and client oriented, but not people oriented per se. Still it was great that she sat with Byeol and listened to her read with approval, and at the same time, gained insight from the book. If not for that interlude with Byeol and the book, it’s uncertain if JY would have found the encouraging and positive words to say to Hae In. Even EH was impressed.

I like that already, Byeol and JY are positive forces rubbing off each other. Their relationship will be interesting to watch, if Show or Writer will give us more scenes of them being their bossy selves together. EH of course will have his work cut out for him, having to serve two bosses. 😆

  25. @Growing Beautifully, hello. I like that Byeol and JY are meeting separately from EH. I would ideally like for them to develop a good relationship before they learn about the other’s relationship with EH. There was a similar adult-child relationship with a secondary lead in Love Next Door.

I hope that the writing and directing stay taut. As you say the first episodes were brimming with important things but the 3 and 4 are a bit more relaxed. Also, how long is the cherry bloom season in any one place? It seems like the trees have been blooming for weeks. (although I haven’t kept track of outfit changes/days passing, Ha!)

  26. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hello @Fern, I felt the same about the Cherry blossoms. I thought that the flowers lasted only for a short while and tended to drop quite soon. Perhaps the weather was especially suitable for them during filming or what’s more likely is that we’re seeing CGI of blooming trees. I’m beginning to think that we had so many outdoor scenes of falling petals to offset the trauma JY had when her father left her at Cherry blossom time. So falling petals with EH will counteract her trauma. Heh!

I’d like to see if the relationship between Byeol and JY can withstand the revelation that EH is Byeol’s dad. My imagination has it that they’d hit it off and rather ignore EH who’s just there to serve the 2 princesses LOL.

  27. @Growing Beautifully, poor manservant EH!

And I would like that girl to woman friendship be a boost to EH and JY’s relationship development at work, rather than have a past fire trauma connection, which seems less organic. Perhaps I’m the only one who thinks that the latter is unimaginative writing.

I predict that their eventual romance will cause a stir in the office and maybe in the industry, like the chef and sous-chef only true.

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Fern, yes definitely, I do not like the idea of the past fire being the connecting force between the OTP. I’ve come to ignore this because it’s such a kdrama thing. Most shows have to tick the trope boxes for a romance. I’d hoped that this drama would have been different, so I’ll wait and see.

Most certainly the office will be in a uproar over any hint of a romance, especially if their cold CEO is involved. Our couple would have a hard time living it down. The most vocal and excited would be friend MA. 😄

  29. Since the hints of romance are already so strong,I am wondering where this drama will go. Yes to development around relationships with the daughter. Of course , there are office dynamic s and other relationships , but that has been done so many times.

Maybe just a slow burn romance With The tension.
being in their relationship.? I am not sure I trust the writer to take us there. 4 episodes in And I do not feel we are being shown their inner conflicts. That is being left to our analysis. Perhaps others are seeing that differently.

There does not seem to be as much going on cinematographically but perhaps I did not see it on my small screen.

  30. Scenes that impressed me

    Ep3

    – the flashback footage of the suicide of JY’s old boss. Especially the final few scenes when JY is peering through the glass window of the door into the funeral home hall. She’s like an outsider looking in. Gives the viewer a sense that it’s very surreal for her. Everything seems to play out in slow motion as she takes it all in (the daughter who lost her father, the grieving widow, the parents of the deceased). We hear the muffled sobs of his next of kin as reality sets in. JY doesn’t go through that door. The rival CW woman is there with them. She spies JY and walks out towards her and out through the doors. She doesn’t speak to her face to face though. During the confrontation, PD films JY’s back and the CW woman alongside her facing us. There’s the line of the double doors between them (they aren’t seeing “eye to eye” on things). CW woman glances sideways as she lays down her accusations. JY’s reactions are filmed framed through the window. Like we’re peering into her shattered heart. Then he pans in on CW woman in a single frame as she delivers the final crushing accusation. “You killed him”. She walks off without taking a look back and we see the camera follow her (heels) and the lone figure of JY dropping her condolence gift (?) and collapsing to the ground as her world comes crashing down.

As an aside, did anyone else think it was presumptuous of the rival CareerWay woman to be planting herself on the CEO’s seat in the first instance in the start of the flashback? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔. I guess she assumed that she would be his natural replacement since he was fired.

    – 2 bridges for Director Woo. Bridges depict moving from one place to another – a transition. We see him on the first bridge in a contemplative mood overlooking traffic as he is given the news from MA that he doesn’t need to go get JY anymore from CW. We get a flashback and he’s on another “bridge”. This time he is looking at the scene unfold where JY collapses into EH’s embrace on the other ”bridge”. They’ve shifted down a gear (transitioned) in their relationship. Back to the present bridge and Woo shrugs (to try to hide his disappointment) as walks off that bridge. I get the feeling he’s conceding defeat? His is not a posture of a man steeling himself for a fight? So far in the power stakes I would say he’s levels up to EH. I am hoping that he doesn’t utilize that power to get the girl. It wouldn’t be a fair fight. Thus far he doesn’t seem to be someone who is capable of doing that. But as it goes in KDrama land, when one door closes another opens. The next time we see Woo, he’s peering into his sister-in-law’s kindergarten and he has his first encounter with single mom friend of EH. So we not left feeling too bad for him. 😂

Don’t have the time to dive into Ep4 in detail.

  31. Howdy! I posted twice the other day but unfortunately, it didn’t show up. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s my phone.

I like that EH keeps making sure that JY eats. I mean isn’t that a full service with the teokbokki/ramen/hotdog/cheese bowl at a convenience store? 🙂

I laughed when he asked her if she’s awkward with him and she said, ‘of course!’. LOL! That was after their basketball game with the kids right? hehehe

@Kate, I found the pinkfong umbrella scence funny too. He was so proud in taking it out from his bag. If I was JY, I would have my mouth open as soon as I saw it. LOL!

  32. @nrllee, I had the feeling that Director Woo is going through the motions for his father’s sake and at the most, he has admiration for JY. If having a love rival could stoke his competitive instincts, it hasn’t really happened yet. Or, he doesn’t really realise the possibility – hasn’t put 2+2 together?

The actor who plays Mr Woo senior is often typecast as a high class or powerful villain. I hope that he doesn’t team up with the rival CW woman HJ. I can imagine all sorts of possibilities there.

  33. @agdr03, I definitely agree that it was full convenience store service. Even slicing the hot dog and arranging it artfully around the fast-food bowl! I thought how EH is used to dealing with children to make them eat. Also, he could tell that JY wanted it without her saying a word. The little student pupils watching were quite impressed with his meal preparation.

  34. I found this in my To be Moderated pile, @agdr03. Sorry about that. I don’t know what happened. pm3

  35. No worries Queen. ☺️ Thank you for finding it.

I won’t be able to watch episode 7 and 8 of Love Scout as we’re on a family holiday for a week. I’ll have some beach time. 😃

I’ll catch up when we go home next Friday.

    Kumawo! 🙇🏻‍♀️
