Still loving this drama.
Ep5 short takes
I liked how EH let his colleague take all the credit for the bag repair lady even though it was really his idea in the first place.
JY – What do you remember from that night?
EH – What do you want me to remember? (SWOON 😍 – this is how you do great dialogue. Pure titillation…)
The elevator scene at the end…busted by Byeol. The guilty looks on their faces was priceless 😂😂😂.
JY enters EH’s world/kingdom. Of scrawled paintings, surfeit of pink and all things princess related…plus a stuffed unicorn to boot! She’s feeling totally out of sorts and off balance. How is she supposed to behave? What should she say? He on the other hand is totally at ease and in his element. Warm home cooked meals made with love…now if he had rolled up those sleeves of his to reveal his biceps busy flexing as he chops those vegetables? Icing on the cake surely? Who needs dessert? No wonder the cake she brought was forgotten. 😂😂😂.
Preview for ep6? JY mutters in the end, “I am in trouble” and the audience concurs, “so are we JY. So are we.” 😂😂😂
Fern
I still have to watch. Thanks, @packmule. 💐🍪🍪💐
I haven’t heard the word shindig in a while! 😄
Kate
Agreeing with the swoonsome quality of these episodes @nrllee! That line is indeed a hum dinger!
I have completed both 5 and 6 and you are all in for a treat.
Because the show is building on wonderfully understated but powerful exchanges between the leads, everything builds! The small messages and the big messages.
It’s slow burn but in a good way.
Some lovely moments in Ep 6 and possibly my favourite scene so far… beautifully shot and paced for ‘full savour the moment’ impact. No more detail for now because everyone is catching up on their viewing.
Check out EH’s suit too! Ooh err – in the right colours he goes from gently handsome to striking!

Ep6
Short takes
– Flashback to inform us as to what JY’s nightmare was. She waited rich where her father told her…scene changes as she stands unmoving (I realize this is a dream sequence so she probably wasn’t standing there the whole time but in her mind, she’s still there, waiting)…As she screams at her deceased father in the funeral home, “you said you would come back! You told me to wait!”…scene changes to the present and we have EH taking her hand to comfort her. This reminded me of a wedding? Father puts the hand of his daughter into the hands of her groom (she’s your responsibility now). EH steps into that role. And just to add some lighthearted humor, as JY wakes she steps on EH’s hand on the ground. They “slept together” in the same room 😂😂😂.
– The hiccups from being busted and the guilty looks 😂😂😂
– I enjoyed the little feel good side story about the bag lady.
– When we get full view of EH’s room in the day time we see that Byeol’s stuff has invaded his personal space. There is nowhere where she isn’t. The play kitchen. The pink stuffed toy pillow next to his adult one.
– My heart stopped a bit when Byeol ran off after the kitten…I was expecting truck of doom…thankfully it wasn’t. It was just a bicycle that hit her.
– Loved that they were both encouraging each other with “you’re doing a good job”.
– He tolerated having his nail painted pink by Byeol…after he painted hers yellow. 🥰
– That final scene outside the concert hall is worthy of dissecting (if I have time I will). As was the accidental night time call (with the split screen).
– I agree with @Kate about his choice of suits. Not every man can pull off plum but EH did.
Things of note thus far
– what is the Chairman doing with CW’s CEO? He doesn’t “support” her (investment wise) but why does it sound like he’s annoyed with her failure in the Deluxe Line case?
– what is the story behind Woo’s sister-in-law (whom he calls Noona) – the one who owns the kindergarten? What happened to his brother?
– why did Byeol’s mother walk away from her and EH?
nrllee
And his little jibe at her about putting stickers on the company car so she couldn’t miss it in future? 😂😂😂. That had me in stitches.
EH – what kind of stickers do you like? Glow in the dark? Sparkly? I have all kinds. I’ll ask Byeol…
JY (firmly) – NO Stickers.
EH (condescendingly) – Ahhh…got it. (He’s not letting her go that easy). What about letters then? Like the ones that say “New Driver”? A big one at the back of the car that says “CEO Kang” 😂😂😂
JY gives him a death stare and he stops (trying to hide his smile). He knows he’s got her and he’s got her good 😂😂😂
Kate
@Nrllee – it was the final scene outside the concert hall that was a wonderful highpoint for me. I don’t think I have seen a scene like that work so well before.
The quality of that scene was in part due to the direction, staging and pacing and partly because of the meticulous story telling in the show so far and the codes of communication between the main leads as well as open dialogue.
Further dissection would be great. I wish I had more time too to go in depth on this show.

Spoilers ahead!!!!!!
Ya! Kang JiYun! That was rude when you closed the door on EunHo’s face! You never turn down an offer of home cooked meal especially if it’s with a group of people. LOL!
But I forgive you because you were so funny once you were inside his house. hahahah I was giggling when you woke up and you two had to make sure Byeol doesn’t see you with her Dad in the house. 🙂
But seriously, I loved the compliment ‘you did well’ to each other. I thought JiYun probably needed it more than EunHo but I’m sure that’s when she really felt that she did.
And the winner is JiYun after tasting EunHo’s tofu paste stew and being able to look at his back while cooking. LOL!
I had to look for the meaning of Blazing Friday or Bulgeum in Korean. It’s their slang for TGIF. hahaha
nrllee
@Kate. Yes definitely that final scene. It was just filmed so well. She thinks she was stood up. He had promised to be there, but with her past experience (with her dad), she knew not to get her hopes up too much. So she starts to walk away after waiting for a while and then pauses….maybe…one more look. And there here he is. Moving through the crowd, making his way toward her. He doesn’t see her yet but she cannot keep her eyes off him. He checks his watch (just like she did not long ago), is he late? She moves into his line of vision and into the passing throng. Then he spots her. Time slows. Even amid the passing crowd, there really only is the 2 of them in that moment of time. Everything blurs. They stay in sharp focus. He sees only her and she sees only him. Then the bubbles and balloons as the children run between them in celebration. The voiceover of Woo asking, “So who is Director Yu to Kang JiYun?”. It’s obvious to everyone. Rhetorical. He is her special someone. And the one final shot with the fountain in the background which just look like fireworks. All accompanied by a piano piece as music in the background, the lulls and lifts perfectly aligning with their shared moment. She hands him the coffee that she had bought. No words were exchanged that whole time, yet so much was said. It was beautiful. The concert is only just beginning. I cannot wait for their interactions inside. 😍

Spoilers and hypotheses below.
@Nrllee and @Kate, I enjoyed these 2 episodes. Some of the pensive parts were slow, but they set up the last scene. JY has succumbed to her feelings; she has taken an unusual amount of care with her outfit and makeup for this first date. She looks so good that people are starting to notice. But the thing that has changed the most is the look on her face when she sees EH and the actress portrays it both subtly and very well.
What game is Woo Senior playing? Why is he propping both companies up? My guess is that he wants to take down Peoplez and then have CW initiate a hostile takeover. He is a primary investor in Peoplez and his share prices will rise. I think that he plans for his son to marry JY so she will be implicated or at least won’t be able to somehow thwart the plan because she will be ‘family.’ He is probably the person behind the data leak in CW that indirectly caused the death of the CEO there and it’s possible that JY has some inkling of that without knowing all details. I only hope that his son realises that he is being used and doesn’t play along, but rather ups his game at Peoplez.
Fern
@agdr03, yes, JY was so far out of her comfort zone in the colourful yet organised room in EH’s house. She could see his lists and organisation co-existing with Byeol’s paintings and toys. So different from her own home. It was like she was paralysed; she couldn’t even make small talk.
@nrllee, yes EH did look Fine while cooking. This goes back to the scene with the girls at the office saying that an idol looked god-like, and JY agreeing absent-mindedly while watching EH. How long will she be able to keep up the pretence that they aren’t in a relationship?
Gosh, I wouldn’t have been able to fit dessert in after a meal like that! 😋 JY wasn’t quite gobbling, but she couldn’t stop eating until the last bit was gone.
Fern
Those fingernails! Too bad he didn’t wear it into work.
That reminded me of a family reunion when my children were little. My big brother Ed turned up with painted nails (several colours) and it was one of my girls, who was feeling left out of the pack, who had done it. He is very kind hearted and kept her from feeling lonely. He kept the colour on all day at least.

Hi @Kate, @nrllee, @Fern, @agdr03
Episodes 5 and 6
I found it an interesting episode where the pace has picked up or unnecessary filler has been cut away. We get more examples of how comfortable it must be to sleep on sofas LOL. And how affected by EH, JY is. It’s just right that after 2 episodes of subtle romance, Show moves into more obvious signs of falling in love.
From JY’s perspective, it’s abundantly clear that she’s become attracted to EH so that she spaces out at work and wants to hear his voice so that she can get to sleep. She even got more dressed up than usual to attend the concert with EH.
So far it’s not overly clear from EH’s side, how much he likes her, because as the secretary he has to be attentive, show the boss respect and see to her needs, which could mean that he does like her while also being a good secretary. He’s also a very nice person who’d help most anyone in any way that he can, hence even his holding JY’s hand while she had her nightmare might not be taken to mean that he likes her romantically.
However, when all his care is taken together with how awkward he felt about it around his Writer neighbour and his daughter, it means that the relationship with JY is much more significant than he might like to admit.
Generally men won’t take too much trouble over someone they only have a work relationship with, but the night of the staff dinner, EH bothered to make sure that JY was safe in the office and he stayed on with her for most of the night. He’s in the difficult position as the secretary, where he cannot overstep the boundaries, even if he likes JY.
What has made it clear that he does like her is that he did not like Dir Wu taking the liberty to put his arm around JY’s shoulder. He deliberately walked in between Dir Wu and JY to separate them before they went up the lift.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
We still get the rose-tinted scenes in the bookstore and eve outside it. It seems to be a place where innocence is honoured and healing can take place. We get a great couple of scenes of Byeol and JY in the rosy glow of Dondam bookstore as they grow closer over a shared love for mint chocolate chip snacks. Even outside the store the lighting is rosy with falling petals while they each enjoy a mint chocolate drink. Byeol has progressed from calling JY ahjumma to unni. While watching a kitten, the outdoor colour is still tinged with pink. It was sweet that JY took the opportunity to help Byeol feel less upset at being abandoned by her mother. At the hospital, Byeol holds JY’s hand and calls her the amazing woman from the bookstore. I’m happy that Byeol has chosen to like JY, despite JY’s often rather aloof demeanour, and in return JY has loosened up with Byeol, which is not her usual style.
I like that JY returns EH’s kindness by bringing him porridge at the hospital. Even before the concert, she guessed that he’d not have time to eat before the recital and bought two drinks for them. This time she does not say that she got 2 drinks by mistake! LOL I especially am amused by how awkward she is when she does something nice which is obviously outside her comfort zone. She keeps that serious face even when taking care of Byeol or when she encourages EH and tells him that he’s doing a good job. Her attempt to almost put her hand over EH’s out of sympathy and then chickening out is so right for her character. It would have been a return for his holding her hand when she had her nightmare.
It’s amusing that EH regards JY as another child he has to work with. He stamps her hand with a seal of approval, he suggests that they get stickers for the car so that she can identify it better, teases her and suggests that he reads her to sleep like he does for Byeol. JY too finds herself turning to him when she cannot sleep. He’s her healthier replacement for the sleeping pills. 😆
agdr03
After eating EunHo’s home cooked meal and sleeping without using sleeping pills at his home, JiYun’s changed.
1 – Made extra effort in her outfit especially for the concert.
2 – Doesn’t throw her bag anymore.
3 – Keeps checking the time.
4 – Checks her phone with a smile.
5 – Bought coffee for him.
She’s definitely different alright.
I especially liked that she brought him food at the hospital.
I can’t wait for their dating era.

I did not really expect much outside of the romance in this short series, hence I’m glad that we get solid side stories on how head hunting works, plus the stories of the candidates and the clients as well. They add to our insight into JY who otherwise remains mainly cold and unwilling to become close to people.
The Appraisal story was important because we see the change in JY. She has finally put her trust in people. Although the independent appraisals she asked for could not give her a confident verdict on the genuineness of the bag, she trusted the seamstress and her staff and took a risk by backing them up all the way. It was quite satisfying that Career Way and other online Appraisers who tried to blow up the issue unnecessarily got their comeuppance and became discredited when Deluxe Line was proved right. It’s telling that EH was absolutely sure that JY would have believed in the Seamstress anyway without the appraisal result.
While we have the side issue of children with single parents getting teased and hear that Byeol is still affected by the abandonment by her mother, we get the balanced view with Seo Joon with his granny and aunt whom he thinks is his mother and the caring relationship between EH and Byeol. We also see the warm relationship between mother and daughter in the Seamstress Mdm Cho and her daughter, Jun Hee, and between Writer Su Hyun and her mum. As we pass the half-way point of this series, I hope that JY gets to heal from her own trauma of being abandoned as she also gets to warm up more to people around her and to Byeol.
An excess of floating and falling bits?
I am amused that this Show has relentlessly given us falling petals to denote moments of connection or romance. And since there were no Cherry trees near the concert hall, Show ensured children came by and bubbles filled the air when Eun Ho came on the scene and saw JY waiting for him. *I think I sniggered.*
Kate
@Nrllee, @Fern,
@Nrllee – thank you for breaking down that wonderful scene/sequence. So beautifully choreographed. I wonder how long it took them to film??
@Ferm – thank you for highlighting the performance aspect. Ha Ji Won is superb in that moment – as you say.
The mutual gaze. The nakedness of that gaze gave me the shivers…
Kate
@agrdr03 – enjoying your account of the shift in JY.
Of course, EH is seeing all this and pondering it. Mr acute observation EH.
I adored the embarrassed phone call sequence in the middle of the night where she feigned sleepiness and a mistaken call and then blew her cover!
Kate
@GB,
Your account of what is happening with EH and evidence of interest from him or not – given his role – is really helpful.
I have been assuming his interest in JY has been at a similar rate as her interest in him.
But looking at the signs of going beyond the call of duty – even for someone like EH – is helpful.
Had he not been interested in JY my feeling is that he would have moved away very rapidly during their overnight office encounter when she leaned in and complimented him on his looks. He looked too like he would have gone in for a kiss.
His desire to cook her a home cooked meal and insistence she stay for dinner also seemed to indicate a deeper appreciation for her. It felt like a ‘let me take care of you properly’ move.
So the question for me is – when did the shift start for him? Was it when they had that fun outing and played basket ball together for instance? She really relaxed and shone. They also had such fun with the spicy food and barriers dropped again.
Or did it start earlier?
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
My Dear @Kate,
I agree that had he not been interested in JY, he’d not have stayed to let her come so close. In fact, I thought he should have slept at his own desk if he merely wanted to sleep off the drunkenness before going home. The fact that he let her rest on his shoulder for a while before leaving her to sleep showed that he had a higher regard for her.
Perhaps if she’d really tried to kiss him, he might have reciprocated, although I’m glad it didn’t come to that, since they were both not sober.
Yes, the opportunity to have a Blazing Friday Night or TGIF with JY suddenly presented itself and EH took the chance to feed her well.
You asked:
So the question for me is – when did the shift start for him? Was it when they had that fun outing and played basket ball together for instance? She really relaxed and shone. They also had such fun with the spicy food and barriers dropped again.
Or did it start earlier?
My guess … I felt that when EH found her so stressed that she finally accepted his help and him as her secretary, the attraction already started to work on him, but it began as concern for someone in need. He saw that she destressed by eating super spicy tteokbokki and offered to eat that with her when they came up against the nasty Hye Jin. He even already had a pair of sneakers in his trunk to offer her so that they could go for a walk to destress. After this, when JY asked him if he thought that they were close (and she didn’t think so) he was miffed. I’d put it down to that time.
He wanted to feed her so that the experience of eating nice meals would be close to home for her, although they were out, so he bought her freshly baked buns to tempt her to eat, and made a convenience store ramyeon into a delicious, full meal.
All those times of concern mixed with liking her muddies the waters a bit, but I believe that he really considered them to have become close with the basketball game, and was disappointed that she didn’t see it that way.
Fern
@Kate, I think you are correct about the attraction being subtle but real. I think that someone else said that food was EH’s love language and I will agree. He wasn’t just cooking for a co-worker, a normal friend or an acquaintance. He was cooking especially for her and to see her reactions. But he is being VERY careful. He doesn’t want to take any real initiative because she is his boss. I think this is evident when he asked her how much she wanted to know about the first time they ‘slept’ together. He is in uber-gentleman mode.
Feifei
May I chip in? That night when JY almost kiss EH but instead fell asleep leaning into his shoulder, I remember EH had his hand on the sofa. However he brought his arm forward, put his hand on JY’s back and I thought he pulled her closer to him (or was I imagining things?). I find him suspicious here. There was another instance where EH nonchalantly pulled the collar of JY’s blouse from under her jacket to over her jacket, I had the feeling that he was trying to seduce her. I mean do secretaries adjust their boss’ clothing like that? So I think EH definitely has feelings for JY.
I also noticed the EH addresses the other lady as writer Jeong despite being very familiar with her and frequently helping each other with baby sitting the children.
monmor
@FF I remember him putting his hand on her back in an affectionate way.But that might have been the other drama I’m currently watching.
About the collar straightening that actually bothered me. Too seductive in an office setting. I have to ask myself though why a female secretary straightening her bosses tie Does not seem as seductive. Some of that role reversal That challenges our preconceptions of gender roles.
monmor
Thinking of this drama in terms of Reversal of gender roles and what that illustrates is helpful to me. I have been feeling that the male lead is just too good to be true. I might have similar feelings for a female lead acting the way he does. But I don’t think I would feel as uncomfortable Or be waiting for the other shoe to drop- Either his negative side being exposed or him becoming more assertive If that is called for.
I Have not yet watched episodes five and six and i’m looking forward to doing that.
monmor
@Kate and others watching Flourished Peony Do you think I am thinking of a scene from flourished peony? The hand on the back scene.
I am relieved.I only have four more episodes to catch up on flourished peony Before I can watch an episode a day. Then I will have more time for other dramas.
monmor
I had another thought. His adjusting her collar and other incidents as well are as though he is dealing with a child.
Kate
@GB – thank you for mapping the early stages of EH’s attraction. Right back to her becoming receptive to his help. Hmmmm. I had forgotten the moment when he was miffed! Of course. I may have to go back and re-watch earlier episodes now!
@Fern – if food is EH’s love language – then Episode 5 was an ode to JY (pun accidental!!! Good point too re the care he must be taking not to overstep the professional boundaries! All of this of course adds to the wonderful, bubbling interpersonal tension.
@FeiFei – good indicators that I have forgotten -the nonchalant readjustment of her collar for instance. Also the relative formality with Writer Jeong… despite the convenience of his situation with WJ and others’ expectations of them.
@Monmor – You are right first time. @FeiFei also noted that hand on back moment in this show. [I can’t remember it from FP.]
I need to take a fresh look at these key moments!
Feifei
@MM, having a male secretary is a common thing in Kdramas, there’s a male secretary in MOTA and also in a more recent drama Love Your Enemy. Usually male secretaries are paired with a male boss with no romance between them. 🙂
monmor
I am trying to think of a kdrama where there is a female secretary to a female boss. There must be🙂
nrllee
Good thoughts everyone. As for when EH fell for JY, I am not sure we will be able to get a fixed moment in time. 😂😂. This sounds like one of those Hen Parties where we get to ask the Bride to be, “so when did you first start to like him?” I would like to think that she’s grown on him. There were sparks for sure but I get the feeling he’s trying very hard NOT to like her. I like that he didn’t move to kiss her at the office. He knew she was very drunk. And I get the feeling it was also why he replied, “what do you want me to remember?” when she asked him about that night. He realized that what is said and done on a boozy night out is probably NOT the best judge of how a relationship is going. The cold light of day when reality sets in and your logic takes hold, you may choose differently. So he dropped the issue and went with her narrative – which was very gentlemanly of him. I did find him adjusting her collar rather seductive. Yet as @MM pointed out, female secretaries would adjust their male boss’s ties and it wouldn’t feel as intrusive? 🤔. So are we having double standards here? However I did notice that he didn’t pause his speech when he adjusted her collar, he just kept talking business after he did it (as if he didn’t even think twice about it). So for him it probably wasn’t intended to be any different from him adjusting Byeol’s collar. But it felt different from JY’s point of view because the moment slowed for her and his speech sounded muffled after he did it. It obviously distracted and unnerved her.
Kate
Great points @Nrllee!
Perhaps the better way to explore the question is to look at process and try and deduce what has been going on – as privileged observers.
I did wonder, when the show started, whether it would be a Taming of the Shrew type of show or one of those shows with a huge amount of bickering between the leads. . But it hasn’t been that show. The felt needs of our ML and FL are not far beneath the surface. The right person creates the safety for JY.
Fern
@nrllee, I agree with your point that EH might adjust JY’s collar as though she were Byeol. The same way that he arranged the hot dog slices on the convenience store meal, urged her to eat or stamped her hand (although that was a bit more charged, imo.) I think that if he thought she would react like that, he wouldn’t have done it. The net effect of his caring gestures is rather like he is including her in his little family traditions, which I quite like.
Tbh, I have never in my life adjusted any of my boss’s collars without asking. If their hands were full and they couldn’t do it themselves, I would warn them at least – “Stay still a minute, you have a tag showing, rumpled collar, crooked tie.” In my imagination, while he was speaking, he could have chosen to point to her collar to indicate that it was caught in her jacket. But knowing her personality, she could have not understood, not seen, or impatiently ignored it choosing to do it on the way to wherever she was going. He was being efficient in a sense.
Fern
@monmor, I agree that EH seems too good to be true – almost too handsome, like a Ken – but he is what he is. He has his own insecurities about his past, which we saw when he got transfixed by the sirens. We see that he also feels bad about not being there for Byeol when they are at the hospital and he confesses to JY that he feels like he hit a wall.
His confession about that gives JY a chance to console him verbally although she doesn’t take his hand. Even that gives her a reciprocal emotional boost because she wouldn’t have said that earlier when someone needed her.
As to instinctively treating her like a child, I can only think that Byeol has been the only woman in his life for X years since his wife left so completely. So it’s rather natural for him.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
I was inspired by @FF’s question(s) and the comments that have come along regarding EH to expand on my comments to @Kate above. My apologies for the walls of text and for some repetition … I’m just off-loading.
Eun Ho’s many Hats
The fun part of deciphering what’s going on with EH in the romance department is that he slides smoothly back and forth between roles, and we don’t get a voiceover of his thoughts. We just keep watching his micro expressions and gestures and try to figure out what he’s about. I get the impression that he is improvising as he goes along, depending on the situation and what he considers the wisest thing to do. I agree with @nrllee and others that he is not trying to have a romantic relationship with JY, and may even be trying to avoid it, but it’s just happening without him trying.
As to when he was attracted to JY, my guess is the same as what I said to @Kate above… it was as early as when he found her helpless and relying on him, but he chose to make nothing of it.
I’ve named the roles or hats EH wears for fun: The Caring Man in the Street and Warm Neighbour (CM) The Aware Sweetheart (AS) The Responsible Secretary (RS) The Friendly Parent (FP)
The Caring Man in the Street and Warm Neighbour (CM)
EH will be nice to any stranger. He says “Hi” to all the other mothers who are ogling him, saves anyone from being hit by a flyaway ball and chats with persons who deliver veggie drinks. Heck, he even leaves water out for delivery men. When JY first encountered him and walked down the uneven mountain path with him, he was being the CM.
Hence in normal daily interactions it is hard to differentiate if he is just being CM nice or being anything else.
(continued…)
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
(continued…)
The Aware Sweetheart (AS)
I feel that this hat is always close but under the surface, and that EH deliberately leaves this hat on the shelf. We know why. As the subordinate, he cannot, especially at work, cross the formal line with his boss.
However, I’d guess that when she was unwell and collapsed unto his shoulder in Episode 2 he was already aware of her but kept his distance. By Episode 5-6 when she was drunk and fell against him again, I felt he was more RS moving into AS. That’s why he held her a bit closer. However he knew that it was an embarrassing situation for the boss to be in, hence he returned to and remained in RS mode after this.
When he cooked dinner for her, I felt he was more FP and RS, with AS in the background. When she complimented him he responded partially as FP but AS was closer to the surface. When he held her hand to comfort her in her nightmare, it might have been more FP and AS. He did spend the night uncomfortably I believe, since he had fallen asleep next to the sofa.
The clearer indication that EH had entered AS territory was when he saw that Dir Wu took the liberty to put his arm around JY’s shoulder in front of him… as if to say that he (Wu) had some privileges with JY that EH did not have. JY pushed Wu’s hand away looking annoyed and EH was shocked and displeased too. When he walked between Wu and JY, he blocked JY from Wu, while still speaking pleasantly about how she would have believed in Mdm Cho. He was subtly giving the sign that if Wu wanted to get close to JY, he’d have to come through him. A move of a man who is laying claim? I liked that it was all done with a pleasant smile.

(continued… )
The Responsible Secretary (RS)
As the Secretary EH is often enough in intimate space with JY to ensure she is comfortable, that she projects the right image, that she does not make mistakes if he can help it (like with the names of their staff). He anticipates her needs, before she is even aware of them. In normal work interactions colleagues do take care of each other in terms of buying in food for their friends.
Hence I put down things like his organising her office, his straightening her collar, even his attentiveness during the staff dinner where he wanted to ensure that she was not overly drunk and that she did get to the office safely, under this category. It did not appear that he had any ulterior motive except to do his job.
However, in his awareness of how JY seldom took care of herself, and because of his CM self, he slipped into a more intimate caring mode by remaining with her in her office that night when they were drunk.
A better choice would have been that he slept outside at his own desk, but he chose to sit next to her. It was right that when he woke up and saw that she was drunk talking, that he did nothing except watch her. It would have been better if he’d moved away, but the fact that he didn’t can mean one or two things.
One might be that he did not want to appear rude, or that he was misinterpreting her actions, or that he disliked her. The other was that he did already find her attractive and was wondering how far she was going to go in her drunken state. It was a wait and see attitude and then to improvise from there. Since she fell asleep on his shoulder, and since he was already a little AS, he may have held her a little closer but left her to sleep.
(continued …)
GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The Friendly Parent (FP)
With Writer Jung Su Hyun and all the other adults around the children, EH is mostly the FP. He is a bit closer to Writer Jung since they take care of each others’ children but he has maintained the polite Korean distance of not ever calling her by her name. For her to say that they are close enough so that they can change plans in child-care at the last minute even embarrassed Writer Jung herself. It was true in a sense, but not in the same sense of intimacy that she would have liked.
I fancy that most of the time when EH is taking care of JY, he’s thinking in RS and FP mode. He has said (more than once?) that JY is more work than Byeol, as if he has lumped them together under his FP role. He bought bread for her because he knew she’d skip lunch if he didn’t (a motherly / fatherly deed). In the lift he tempts her with the nice smell of freshly baked bread, pretending to take the bread away so that she’d eat it. It’s a ploy that parents use with children.
When he figured that JY would be upset after seeing Hye Jin, he offered her the option to go eat tteokbokki (the way he might offer ice cream to Byeol) and then decides for both of them (like a parent) to go for a healthy walk instead. In letting her choose whether she’d tell him about her tension with Hye Jin or not, he was more the RS, but in the basketball game, he was like the FP playing in the playground with the kids.
JY also let her competitive, playful self out, not caring that EH sees her being a kid, wanting to win and wanting him to give in to her instead of playing a fair game. He is amused that she openly wants him to let her win from then on, in everything, but he also gives her an extra look of consideration, perhaps more as an AS, wondering what losing to her might mean in the romance department.

A Little Note on JY and how far she would have changed by Episode7
In Episode 4 after letting themselves go in the basketball game, EH understandably considers that they are a bit less distant. He’s stunned that JY still considers herself awkward with him, just because it’s normal for her to feel awkward with all her colleagues.
He asks if she’s awkward around him too and she says: “Of course!” LOL.
EH blinks at her (in chagrin?)
(Timestamp Ep 4, 29:42 in case anyone would like to check)
JY makes it worse by asking : “Are we close, then?”
EH nods to himself as if making a mental note: “I see.”
He turns to leave then suddenly turns back to say: “That’s too bad.” And walks out smartly.
(He’s miffed! After all the FP and RS attentiveness he’d shown, he was still just a colleague she was awkward around!! I’d guess that his ego was bruised, and that any AS he may have had, had taken a beating.)
JY stares after him, puzzled. LOL. (Not a people-person at all, our JY.)
However the preview of Episode 7 tells us the JY is not unaware of her feelings after all. Quite a jump in her growth!!!
Kate
@GB – I have so enjoyed reading these reflections and the way you have broken down the roles he is (observably) playing at various points in the narrative. Super!
I wonder whether the show Will allow us (retrospectively) inside his thinking at a later point.
One comment for discussion. The desire to protect and in some ways to husband is in a very similar space to the RP place relative to Byeol. JY brings this out in him because of who she is as a person. The RP to AS space, I would suggest is increasingly so interchangeable as to be a conduit of under the radar, imperceptible growth in affection. He is coming to appreciate in JY so much of what he knows and loves in his daughter. The RP behaviour is bespoke for JY. EH seems to be on an inevitable – yes, fated – trajectory.
monmor
I am very interested in knowing what happenned in his marriage. Was his kindness not valued (perhaps seen as unmanly submissiveness?)or maybe even taken advantage of.
I have not watched 5 and 6 so I may be missing some presented material.
I would much rather see this explored than another iteration of fated from childhood.
Kate
Hi @Monmor, I don’t think this show is simply going to do ‘fated from childhood’.
There is a whole host of things that cause the unexpected collision of the leads to create a dynamic that neither could have anticipated after their first encounter.
This show has far more to it – at the psychological and yes the recent historical level (referring to his failed marriage).
Kate
ps I think you’ll really enjoy the latest episodes!
Kate
@GB – just expanding on my incoherent comments.
The situation between EH and JY is the perfect set-up (that’s what I mean by fated). Both are guarded and both wear and operate within masks.
Bring them together, however, and the masks serve as bridges between them, connective conduits that gradually allow a new openness and affection to emerge and flow between them.
They are gradually owning the true nature of the interactions – always able to pull back and give a different name or status to what is going on.
JY does this most obviously with her first purchase of an additional coffee.
Kate
(continuing)
The parallel narrative of JY’s bookstore encounters with EH’s daughter and the similarity they identify – just adds to this sense of the powerful pull of what is happening.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Hello @Kate!
I heartily agree that the person JY is, brings out the Parent/Husband in EH who’s already such a caring type.
Most certainly, I believe too that the movement back and forth between being the Secretary and the AS is happening continually. At times, EH himself may not even be aware of the transition.
What a nice idea that he will grow in affection as he appreciates that JY has some of the lovable qualities of Byeol. We did say earlier that we hoped he would not end up parenting both Byeol and JY. I believe that with the AS coming more to the fore, he will be quite clear as to whether to husband or to parent JY. 🙂 😆
monmor
@Kate Yes I did understand your use of the word fated to be different than fated from childhood.
My thinking about the word fated now is something like yours. They are perfectly matched to help each other as people and in a relationship. I was only seeing her vulnerabilities and I am hoping we will see more of his.
monmor
@GB I am enjoying your use of hats to Describe the different parts of his inner world. I want to reread the previous post more carefully and comment more. Real life calls!

I really liked the ‘meal at EH’s house’ part of episode 5. At 52.32 Writer Jung Su Hyun and her mother are talking in the kitchen even as EH is preparing a meal for JY. The mother nags SH to date EH. She mentions taking the first step and not to wait. The mother describes the effect of EH’s killer soybean curd soup and how EH’s back looks when he cooks. We get to see the exact scenario playing out in EH’s flat but with JY, lol. Things I noticed:
JY tries to look like she’s not staring at him but he caught her and smirked a bit. I laughed so hard.
She scoffed at the idea that the entire meal was home-made, but one taste of that stew stopped her thoughts.
JY’s warning stare and the rattlesnake sound effect at the moment that EH put his chopsticks close to the last bit of omelette. She didn’t even offer to cut it in half to share.
She still sounds like Simon Cowell when she says, “Fine, that was delicious”, without a smile.
57.05 The later conversation about his cooking skills was well paced. It went quickly from a small-talk question of when he learned to cook so well to a reveal that he did it to survive since childhood.
EH: It’s been 30 years. Survival skills honed for 30 years.
JY: (In disbelief) Don’t go overboard just because I paid you a compliment. I know your age.
EH: I’m serious.
JY: (still not believing) Are you saying you lived alone since you were in elementary school?
EH: (Long silence) I turned out okay, didn’t I?
JY: (tries to process this) You did turn out okay. Good job.
EH: (taking her hand) You, too, CEO. (Stamps her hand)
JY: What is that?!
EH: You did well. — I thought I’d pay a proper compliment.
There was a lot between the lines. This conversation made me think EH wanted JY’s approval but also I wondered how much he knew or guessed about her parent-less childhood, which must have been similar. I think that surely JY was thinking about similarities with her own story, not that she said anything or question him more deeply about his statement. Neither of them give personal details easily, do they? His compliment to her, ‘You did well.’ could be interpreted as any number of things to do with work, eating well, coming to his home for a meal, or a more general meaning like JY’s earlier confirmation that EH turned out okay/grew up well.
monmor
@fern
Looks like I have a lot to look forward to in episodes five and six
Even though I have not watched these episodes. I am posting here because this is where the Conversational action is.
monmor
The purchase of the additional coffee was so funny in how she said it was just by accident. Yes, girl hide your true feelings.Even the ones that suggest you do a small favor like buy a coffee for someone!
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Fern, thank you for giving us the home-cooked meal conversation and action. I could see it playing out again in my mind! I was so amused that she wanted that last piece of rolled egg all to herself and his smile when she grabbed it and ate it.
I believe that JY’s friend MA had given him enough backstory so that he knew JY had grown up alone. He had seen her at her low point before after meeting Hye Jin and had heard how she had been unfairly accused of killing her mentor and had been kicked out of Career Way.
He was responding to her compliment by giving a similar one with regard to how she’d developed well, through and past her difficulties. But she was not aware of how much he knew about her.
In a way, the way he skirted the issue of what bad experiences she’d faced and still was able to give her encouragement, reminded me of how she’d listened to Byeol say that she wouldn’t look for the kitten’s mother who probably had abandoned it. JY was thoughtful enough to tell Byeol her secret of growing up without a mother herself, and suggesting that they look for the kitten’s father instead.
I agree that EH enjoyed her compliments, starting from her compliments over his cooking and getting her to eat a proper home-cooked meal. The look on his face as he watched her eat and his satisfaction at her appreciation of his cooking was lovely to see. She said cooking seemed to be his calling and he unabashedly said that she should make a reservation the next time.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate, it’s interesting that there’s so much that’s drawing EH and JY together, without them even knowing or trying to grow close. Yes, the set-up of work, friends and Byeol at the bookshop, seems to ensure that they will become intimate friends at least, if not lovers.
It’s funny, isn’t it, when they will not admit to the true situation and instead give a different motive for their gestures of caring. It is convenient that they can hide what is really happening so that it can continue apace without embarrassment.
I suppose that will all change when JY tackles the truth head on with EH, and if their colleagues get wind of what’s going on. The next episodes might be rocky ones!
Fern
Dear All, I’ve rewatched the episode 5 meal scene a few times and there’s so much happening, but much below the surface. It’s interesting to watch their faces (something I miss while reading subtitles at first view.)
If it were I cooking a meal for my boss or a new friend, and they fell asleep on the sofa– I am pretty sure I would try to wake them gently and give them 2 options: call a cab for them or let them stay over as they are. Particularly if it’s my boss – I might even call the cab first before waking them. But we see EH cover JY with a blanket 1.02.00 and then go into the bedroom to sit down and ponder the situation for a long while. Why would he do that, rather than be practical?
It seems to me that there was a shift in the relationship during the after dinner conversation. We can overhear, as JY does, the comfortable conversation between EH and his daughter. When EH finds her asleep, he lets her sleep while he does the washing up. By the time EH has finished, JY is no longer sitting asleep, but has kicked her shoes off and is lying on the sofa, much as she does at her home. What has started off as a brittle, nerve-wracking evening for her has ended up with her relaxed enough to act as she does in the privacy of her own home, although I don’t suppose it is intentional since she had already fallen asleep. I think she was exhausted after the work week and maybe even from her stress at the beginning of the evening.
Ha, I was just waiting for that loud toy to disrupt the peace. 🫣🤫
@GB, I recall that MA told EH a few things about her work history but she may have let him know she was an orphan, too. He may have heard something from MA’s husband, too, as they seem to be old friends.
nrllee
Thanks for penning your thoughts @GB. Yes I still feel that EH is in FP mode. Or he has deluded himself into thinking that he’s just being “attentive” to JY as he would to Byeol. I would think that he would certainly have those nagging thoughts about some of his actions “crossing the line” but he probably buried them. I think that’s why he asked JY what she wanted him to remember. Had she moved to tell him about their intimate encounter, he would’ve possibly crossed that line too. But he saw how she doubled back with her shields up again so he waited. I guess that’s parenting too isn’t it? When your child doesn’t want to talk about something, do you choose to wait or insist that they bare all when they aren’t ready to?
I get the feeling writer is using “fate” (timing) as the final determining factor with the relationships. Woo and JY obviously have had the whole “you are meant to be together” conversation from the get go by Chairman dad matchmaker. Yet JY has never moved on that front. Woo was just moments away from his intimate encounters with JY – when she fainted and with the company dinner night. His timing was off. Similarly SuHyeon (single mom) has hesitated all this time and now that JY has come into the picture, she’s missed her opportunity. However, should JY and EH bow to “logic” and “reason” in their choice of mates? Marriages of convenience? I believe most of us would’ve thought the more logical pick for EH would be SH. Their “family” dynamic is already established. It would be a seamless transition from neighbours to husband/wife. Both children already live like siblings. Woo and JY are almost akin to a “business” decision. Woo’s father has invested in JY – I am guessing with the proviso that she teaches Woo how to run the business? Which is why I am confused as to what his intentions are with CW CEO. Why undermine his son’s business by fraternizing with the enemy? 🤷🏻♀️🤔
It seems opportune that EH was asked to go along with the most recent HR client meeting with Woo (on the day of the piano recital). It serves to build the angst with audiences. Neither have seen each other all day (outfit reveal would be a surprise at the concert hall 😂). Would he miss the recital altogether because he’s detained at the client meeting with Woo? 😬. I guess this meeting with the client could potentially be a career change opportunity for EH should he need to vacate his office of JY’s secretary?
Fern
@nrllee, the only reason I can think of for Woo’s father to be undermining Peoplez is for profit. I wonder if he is a step-father – in the cast list his name is Oh Chul-Yong, not a Woo. In any case, because he is a major investor in Peoplez rather than of CW, he stands to profit from a hostile take-over. He may be betting that if JY marries Woo, she can’t make a fuss because she would be part of the family, and she would be implicated somehow if there was something dodgy. I don’t really think he cares about Woo Jeong-Hoon and is just using him as a tool to advance his plans.
I like your idea that the timing for Woo and for SH to get their logical pairings, but the timing may be just right for themselves. We’ll see.
Like @monmor and others, I’m curious about the school principal’s husband’s death and why she chose to get away from the family business.
Feifei
@GB, so clever of you to look at EH with different hats. He may have unconsciously put on the FP hat when he supposed to be wearing the RS hat. You saved him from being labeled a temptress.
All these comments about episode 5 & 6 make me want to rewatch them. @MM what are you waiting for?
nrllee
@Fern your suggestion about Chairman’s double dealing plans makes sense. Did he (principal’s husband) die? I wasn’t aware that he did? But it did seem strange that Woo would care for the sister-in-law like that if his brother hadn’t passed on. Maybe it was implied or maybe I missed a conversation about his passing. If so then Woo’s story mirrors that of the single mom SH. Both are caretakers of people left behind by deceased siblings.
monmor
@FF 😄Yes what am I waiting for? Time mostly. I am all the way up to the last episode available of flourishing peony. For my lie down in bed watch I’m rewatching “Lie after lie” by the same writer as Love Scout. Again, it is about a nice man with a daughter Who is without his wife?I’m not sure if she died or they divorced. It is much more of a melo drama from what I recall.
When it is my turn to watch the t v then I will watch love scout episodes five and six. Saving it up😄
Hana
I’ve just learnt a benefit to waiting awhile before watching the show as Viki updates and refines their subtitles! They’re more nuanced on my re-watch.
I’m enjoying everyone’s commentary.
I like how EH’s language switched from a subordinate (honorific good night ‘jumuseyo’) to an equal (casual/informal good night ‘jal ja’) in the one phone call. How very telling.
Fern
Good evening, @nrllee. I confess that I am assuming that the principal’s husband has died. The scene starts in episode 3 at 14.40.
If it was a divorce or separation, why would Woo visit her during working hours and also bring her a birthday cake? To me, Woo seems to be clinging on to the their relationship. He calls her Noona in public and she doesn’t like that.
“Hyung has been gone for a while. How long should I call you Sister-in-Law?” So she was married to his older brother. Woo is concerned that she doesn’t want him to stop by. “Just don’t come too often. I’m okay now,” she says. Woo says he himself is not okay. He will come by until she gets a boyfriend. This makes me think that he is checking in on her as a stand-in for his brother, but in a familial and traditional, not romantic, way. Little Seo-Joon tells his mother that Woo even comes by during the day because he ‘loves to play.’
Looking at the characters in the scene, I have the impression that Woo is grieving and so is the Principal, but she is healing faster than he is. I wonder: was his brother his full brother or a step-brother/son of Oh Chul-Yong?
My question is, is this a second death or the same as the former CEO of CW?
nrllee
@Fern Yes I did think that he was stepping into his brother’s shoes (not romantically) to care for her when he brought the cake to his Noona at the kindergarten. I just wasn’t sure if his brother was dead or had just walked away. I was also wondering why he said it was strange for her to start up a kindergarten? Was there a deceased child as well? Is that why?
O are you thinking that the former CEO who took his own life is Woo’s brother/step brother? I need to go back to take a closer look at the widow. I am sure there was a shot of the grieving widow and a daughter? Or at least that was what I assumed. Although I am pretty sure the older man there who was weeping did not look like Chairman.
Fern
@nrllee, I don’t know if the two dead men are the same, it just seems like so much of a coincidence to have two men dead under mysterious circumstances and both having work connections, although I can’t be sure. JY seems to be a link between them.
I am assuming that the principal had the opportunity to continue to work in her former job (perhaps she met her husband at work?) but decided to have a complete break and go into something unrelated. Maybe she felt safer outside of whatever industry she left? Or she was pressured to leave? Just my imagination at work. 🤔
nrllee
@Fern just checked up on grieving widow in Ep3 and it’s not the same woman. Old man (whom I assume is the father of deceased man) is also not Chairman. Deceased man was Lee YongHoon. So wrong surname. But the surnames of Woo’s family is odd – as you’ve picked up.
The sister in law is a Park (according to Asian Wiki).
Conversation between Woo, Chairman and JY over dinner
Chairman – did you like the food?
JY – it was delicious.
Woo (rolls eyes) – she’s not going to say it was bad? You brought us all the way home to feed us (gets up to leave the table)
Chairman – where are you going? I am still talking.
Woo – I am going to take some stuff home.
Chairman – why don’t you just move in?
Woo – how could you say something so horrible? (Not sure if this is the right translation. Sounds odd?) (walks back to the table and speaks to JY) Call me when he’s done nagging. (Strides off)
Chairman – sometimes I think he’s all grown up. But when I see him like that, he has a long way to go. How’s he doing these days?
JY – He’s doing better than you might think.
Chairman – you’ve done a lot of work to make him decent. See? I have good taste in people. I picked you out right away at the mentors’ meeting.
JY – are you still supporting college students? (Does this mean their relationship dates way back to college? And he is her mentor? Her Daddy Long Legs? After all she was an orphan and College fees aren’t cheap)
Chairman – it’s more fun to help smart youngsters than to hoard money. There’s no one better than you CEO Kang.
JY (smiles at the compliment) – it won’t be easy to find them.
Chairman – so how much longer do I have to invite you over? Still not impressed with Director Woo? You’ve raised him long enough. Why don’t you get together? (JY squirms uncomfortably). That was my selfish desires talking. Eat.
After dinner. Woo and JY talk
Woo – what did my dad say? Your face is kind of dark. Will he withdraw his investments or something?
JY – if he pulls out now, it’ll be his loss.
Woo – That’s Kang JiYun! But don’t work too hard.
JY – don’t worry. I am strong.
Woo – if you’re strong then why did you pass out with overload? (He grabs her arm to stop her mid stride. He’s serious now). Be careful. For real. I’m worried about you.
JY – I know. I won’t overdo it. Worried about me? You’re all grown up Woo Jeong Hoon! When did I first see you? At the sponsor meet up? Before you graduated high school right? (Figures. He’s younger than her)
Woo – It would be a bummer if you still saw me as a youngster. (Leans in closer to her face). Look! I am even more handsome at this angle right?
JY (unimpressed) – don’t go around doing this. (Walks off leaving him). What are you doing? Hurry up. Let’s go Director Yu (😂😂😂 she calls him by the wrong name)
Woo (mumbles to himself) – Director Yu? (Walks off screen after her).
Fern
Thanks for researching the funeral memory and for bringing this conversation back, @nrllee. Not only does it show that there are (it seems) two dead men, but also that JY is indebted to Chairman Oh since college and for more than one reason. If Oh is doing that for personal gain rather than disinterestedly, it’s creepy. He says it’s more fun to help smart youngsters than to hoard money, but does that mean that he is just using them or even training them to support his plans? Speculating in their brains rather than in normal investments?
I wonder if he was HJ’s mentor as well.
Old American Lady (OAL)
@ packmule3, Not a comment about the drama. I’m currently watching When The Stars Gossip. I enjoyed your description of the events surrounding January 20 as a big shindig.I hadn’t read or heard that expression in years and it somehow struck my fancy. thank you.
monmor
The scenes I enjoyed the Most are the ones while he was cooking for her and then immediately afterwards when She slightly challenges him about being on his own since elementary school. And he responds by saying he turned out well didn’t he. It was almost as though he was asking her to say something nice about him. Their growing emotional Intimacy was so apparent In those scenes and in how they looked at each other.
Fern
@monmor, you are up to date!
Yes, I also liked the EH could confide in JY at the hospital that he felt inadequate. (I had the feeling that we weren’t shown him telling her about Byeol’s problems at school that day, but I might be over-thinking.) Earlier JY had said that he should dedicate the rest of the day to his child and not worry about work. After hearing more about JY’s backstory over supper with MA, ES returned to the hospital to check on them and told him he was doing a good job and that Byeol understands how hard he is trying. It was so nice that she came back to the hospital to comfort him personally when she could have simply phoned. What a difference between her and his former place of employment!
Does anyone else feel that Su Hyeon (single mom) is making a big problem for herself by not telling Seo Joon that she is his aunt and not his biological mother? The writer seems to be setting this problem up for the future.

Hello @Fern,
The times of more equal connection between JY and EH were sweet. When they were not just boss and employee but persons who could be truly who they were and honest with each other, they were each a great help and support for the other.
It was clear that while she was speaking to EH about what a great father he was to be beside Byeol, she was speaking as a daughter who felt her own father had failed her. It was praise from the heart.
What you say about EH telling about Byeol’s problems at school might be right. Show has the habit of leaving out things in one instance to reveal it to us at a later time. It might be to highlight a point at that later time but it also has the effect of leaving us in the dark and guessing.
I was quite pleasantly surprised that the person who came first to the hospital was JY and not Su Hyun. I did not expect that she’d return, or thought that she’d only return after Su Hyun was already visiting and being pally with EH. As it was portrayed, SH finds that she’s the outsider when JY is around.
To your question on Su Hyun’s deception over parentage, … I do foresee the big problem with Seo Joon looming up and soon.
We can guess why … perhaps she did not want to get married and could not adopt Seo Joon officially, and did not want him to feel that he was orphaned. However the fallout now that he is older and can understand more, and when he has to face the teasing is worse. I gather that she must have deceived the school as well if they also regard her as Seo Joon’s mother.
I suppose she did not want the other parents and children to hear Seo Joon calling her ‘aunt’ instead of ‘mum’. There may be a lot of ‘social taboos’ in the culture where an imperfect family is something to raise speculation. Rumour mongering seems to be a problem of sorts, since it has in some circumstances lead to suicide and other destructive behaviour out of shame or to avoid repercussions.
Su Hyun has to start tackling the delicate task of letting Seo Joon know the truth.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Rewatching Ep 6, I realised that the lack of confidence of the Seamstress Mum in her own appraisal and the trust of her daughter Ju Hee in her researching her craft and knowing the genuine leather bag, is adroitly juxtaposed against EH’s earlier lack of confidence as a good dad and JY’s assurances that he was.
I love how kdramas bring out the warm family relationships to give us such good feels.
Now Seamstress Mum goes bravely to stand up for herself and we’re all rooting for her. I loved the slap in the face for Career Way, as a result of their own actions, because they were out to discredit Peoplez, they get discredited instead. A whole bunch of online appraisers also end up shamefaced. They should not have put their foot in when it was not really their business.
I enjoyed this side story of head hunting successfully after being played out by competition.
I also thought it was funny how JY tried to appear objective and cold about how she’d believed Seamstress Cho, when in fact she had taken the risk to trust her, only to go to the wrong car again. It showed that she was not being honest about being objective. It gave Eh the opening to tease her about adding stickers to the car.
Fern
@Growing Beautifully, I’m not sure how much the school knows. I would guess that Seo Joon’s papers had to be shown for admission, but SH may have asked the principal to acknowledge her role as a proxy mother because of the child’s young age. The principal seems to be an understanding person. Often people don’t tell children that they were adopted, particularly in certain cultures. Some children who are secure in their relationships are not affected much, but others can be. I only know this because I am an adopting parent and we had to go to many classes and read up a lot about it. I really think that writer SH has taken very much for granted in her relationship with EH, and is too much a procrastinator about some very important things.
I had the impression that JY went to the hospital straight from her meal with MA without stopping at home because Byeol and EH were at the forefront of her mind. SH had the excuse that she needed to check in with her family first. She must be putting 2+2 together, having seen JY in the elevator, the two sets of crockery in EH’s washing up tray, and now seeing her with EH in the hospital.
Fern
Certainly, @Growing Beautifully. We got to see more of the tactics of Career Way and some interesting relationships between the CEO of Career Way and Mr Oh. Finally, we see that the CEO didn’t fire that former employee of Peoplez, but is using his bad attitude to foster revenge that will satisfy both of them. He has one more chance, apparently, and will be desperate to succeed.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Fern,
That’s true about Su Hyun. Her mum did say she was procrastinating in getting hold of EH as a boyfriend. However that would be difficult, since EH seems to be quite clear about how he treats the ladies.
I suppose SH is in the difficult position of being so familiar with EH and having him within reach, so that it becomes harder to break out of the usual routine and expectation to declare her feelings to him. As most women would have done, she’d have hoped that by now he’d notice her more and find her attractive, so that she would not have to make the first move.
There was also the risk that they’d become awkward with each other if he rejected her, and that would spoil their nice childcare arrangements.
What was the advice you read about when you were researching as an adopting parent? Did the books say to tell the adopted children the truth from before age 4 or something similar?
monmor
Thank you BODers! I was hoping this discussion would encourage me to watch this drama. I do not like dramas that are primarily romance with little plot so I was not sure.
This drama is shaping up to be much more substantial in characterization, plot and meaning than I had thought originally. I hope it will continue to evolve in an interesting and hopefully original way.
The non-romance plot was evolving behind the scenes while I was watching the couple become attracted to each other.
As GB suggests, the time they spend together outside the office is portraying a much more tender connection between them that I am very much on board for.
I am enjoying the choices of colour. The colour of the couch and pillows in EH’s home where JY falls asleep are soft tones. As Kate pointed out, the colour of the suit he wears in the scene at the end of episode 6 transforms him. At first I was wondering who this handsome man was before I realized it was EH. A breathtaking scene. So interesting how he is one of many initially and then stand before her in his uniqueness.
I am thinking the themes of pain in relationships will be explored via his earlier relationship and whatever happenned with SH’s son’s parents and the mystery about the dead men which will likely also tell us more about the competitive world of business.
This is a drama where it is worth paying attention to the secondary leads and the many details.
I liked the subverted TOD scene, and other humourous moments like EH teasing her about a sticker for her car.
@nrlee, @fern, @FF So much in your comments that I enjoyed reading.
Fern
@Growing Beautifully, as far as romance goes, I would say, ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained.’ She has had a lot of time to act on this. But I also understand her reluctance to make things awkward.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Hi @MM, I’m glad you’re back on this Show and these threads. I found that it was refreshing finding out more about how headhunting works, and what a headhunter with integrity does, compared to one without it. I liked the side stories of people being headhunted or asking for headhunting services. As usual, they did add to the main plotline in some way and served to reveal more about our main characters.
Unlike the first couple of episodes where the picture quality was deliberately dull or murky, most of the later episodes are clear and natural in colour because now JY has become less stressed, is back to being clear and effective and is no longer fighting EH. However the rosy orange glow is still used for Dodam bookstore and some family moments between Byeol and EH. I still laugh at the bubbles and water fountains that play around JY and EH outside the concert hall. Show takes every chance to remind us to celebrate this couple.
I notice that you’re interested in the sad backstories about Seo Joon and EH. So far we only know more about JY and the rest we hear from MA or surmise from conversations. Well, as there are only 6 more episodes, I’m not sure we’ll get much more of those characters’ backstories (we might), but I believe we’ll find out more about Director Wu and the CEO Oh.
There’s a long game being played and it looks like Wu and JY are pawn pieces. Maybe even Career Way’s Hye Jin is merely a pawn.
I look forward to more scenes with Byeol and JY together and the semblance of them being family with EH present as well. I wonder what MA will say when she finds out that she scouted a love interest for her friend and not just a secretary. 🙂
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Fern, from the previews, we get to see that JY is so unlike SH. She takes action pretty soon, faces up to the truth and acknowledges it to EH before too much time has passed. I wish we knew just how many days we’ve been following these characters, so as to gauge how much time they have had to know each other. Those cherry blossom trees (likely AI generated) seem to be blooming for an awfully long time and look to be still around to drop petals when our couple decides to make their relationship official. 😊🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸😂
monmor
@GB I can see now where we may not need To know much about his earlier relationship in order to understand their current relationship. I hope there are not unneeded breakups.
In this writer’s previous drama there is a similar set up with a new relationship, A daughter and a former divorce. The former wife plays a key role And we learn about what went wrong In their relationship. So maybe there will be time for this in this current drama but I think there is a lot to explore through other relationships and also in the mystery. I would not be at all surprised if these are all connected.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@MM, that’s true. Kdramas have a knack of connecting a whole bunch of people, events or relationships through coincidental meetings after some past links. We have hope yet in knowing more about the main characters and perhaps see if Wu ends up with Su Hyun instead of continuing alone.
monmor
This writer in the drama.I just watched Called lie after lie did make too much use of coincidence to develop her plot.
Fern
@monmor and @Growing Beautifully, JY did ask about why EH divorced. She asked MA during their meal together when Byeol was in the hospital. (Denying that it’s her personal interest, but that she should know some things about her secretary…) MA says that (her husband) Lee Kang-Seok didn’t know; EH didn’t tell him. So we may get some more information about that. I hope that the wife stays out of the drama, tbh. Personally, I think it’s important information to share when a relationship is getting serious so I would hope that EH will do that.
I thought it was interesting that Woo has already paired up EH and JY in his head and was looking for someone to blame – probably for when his father finds out?
monmor
@Fern Me too. I only want the wife present in the drama in memories or dreams , not in the reality of the show.
So are we.” 😂😂😂
I still have to watch. Thanks, @packmule. 💐🍪🍪💐
I haven’t heard the word shindig in a while! 😄
He knows he’s got her and he’s got her good 😂😂😂
@Nrllee – it was the final scene outside the concert hall that was a wonderful highpoint for me.
It’s their slang for TGIF. hahaha
@Nrllee, @Fern,
@Nrllee – thank you for breaking down that wonderful scene/sequence. So beautifully choreographed. I wonder how long it took them to film??
@Ferm – thank you for highlighting the performance aspect. Ha Ji Won is superb in that moment – as you say.
The mutual gaze. The nakedness of that gaze gave me the shivers…
@agrdr03 – enjoying your account of the shift in JY.
Of course, EH is seeing all this and pondering it. Mr acute observation EH.
I adored the embarrassed phone call sequence in the middle of the night where she feigned sleepiness and a mistaken call and then blew her cover!
@GB,
Your account of what is happening with EH and evidence of interest from him or not – given his role – is really helpful.
You asked:
@Kate and others watching Flourished Peony Do you think I am thinking of a scene from flourished peony? The hand on the back scene.
I am relieved.I only have four more episodes to catch up on flourished peony Before I can watch an episode a day. Then I will have more time for other dramas.
I had another thought. His adjusting her collar and other incidents as well are as though he is dealing with a child.
@MM, having a male secretary is a common thing in Kdramas, there’s a male secretary in MOTA and also in a more recent drama Love Your Enemy. Usually male secretaries are paired with a male boss with no romance between them. 🙂
I am trying to think of a kdrama where there is a female secretary to a female boss. There must be🙂
Good thoughts everyone.
I’ve named the roles or hats EH wears for fun:
The Caring Man in the Street and Warm Neighbour (CM)
The Aware Sweetheart (AS)
The Responsible Secretary (RS)
The Friendly Parent (FP)
The Caring Man in the Street and Warm Neighbour (CM)
EH will be nice to any stranger. He says “Hi” to all the other mothers who are ogling him, saves anyone from being hit by a flyaway ball and chats with persons who deliver veggie drinks. Heck, he even leaves water out for delivery men. When JY first encountered him and walked down the uneven mountain path with him, he was being the CM.
Hence in normal daily interactions it is hard to differentiate if he is just being CM nice or being anything else.
(continued…)

Hi @Monmor, I don’t think this show is simply going to do ‘fated from childhood’.
There is a whole host of things that cause the unexpected collision of the leads to create a dynamic that neither could have anticipated after their first encounter.
This show has far more to it – at the psychological and yes the recent historical level (referring to his failed marriage).
ps I think you’ll really enjoy the latest episodes!
(continuing)
The parallel narrative of JY’s bookstore encounters with EH’s daughter and the similarity they identify – just adds to this sense of the powerful pull of what is happening.
@Kate Yes I did understand your use of the word fated to be different than fated from childhood.
My thinking about the word fated now is something like yours. They are perfectly matched to help each other as people and in a relationship. I was only seeing her vulnerabilities and I am hoping we will see more of his.
@fern
Looks like I have a lot to look forward to in episodes five and six
Even though I have not watched these episodes. I am posting here because this is where the Conversational action is.
The purchase of the additional coffee was so funny in how she said it was just by accident. Yes, girl hide your true feelings.Even the ones that suggest you do a small favor like buy a coffee for someone!
@Fern your suggestion about Chairman’s double dealing plans makes sense. Did he (principal’s husband) die? I wasn’t aware that he did? But it did seem strange that Woo would care for the sister-in-law like that if his brother hadn’t passed on. Maybe it was implied or maybe I missed a conversation about his passing. If so then Woo’s story mirrors that of the single mom SH. Both are caretakers of people left behind by deceased siblings.
Saving it up😄
I’ve just learnt a benefit to waiting awhile before watching the show as Viki updates and refines their subtitles! They’re more nuanced on my re-watch.
I’m enjoying everyone’s commentary.
I like how EH’s language switched from a subordinate (honorific good night ‘jumuseyo’) to an equal (casual/informal good night ‘jal ja’) in the one phone call. How very telling.
@ packmule3, Not a comment about the drama. I’m currently watching When The Stars Gossip. I enjoyed your description of the events surrounding January 20 as a big shindig.I hadn’t read or heard that expression in years and it somehow struck my fancy. thank you.

Hi @pkml3, I trust you had a great ski trip as a good break after the ‘Shindig’. Was the snow firm enough to ski on but not so hard that it hurt to fall on?
Yes, this is a gentle reminder to open the next Kairos Thread. Thank you in advance!

@Fern,
That’s true about Su Hyun.
@Growing Beautifully, as far as romance goes, I would say, ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained.’ She has had a lot of time to act on this. But I also understand her reluctance to make things awkward.
@MM, that’s true. Kdramas have a knack of connecting a whole bunch of people, events or relationships through coincidental meetings after some past links. We have hope yet in knowing more about the main characters and perhaps see if Wu ends up with Su Hyun instead of continuing alone.
This writer in the drama.I just watched Called lie after lie did make too much use of coincidence to develop her plot.
@Fern Me too. I only want the wife present in the drama in memories or dreams , not in the reality of the show.
