Thanks @pkml3! I trust your ski holiday was a good break from work.

Saturday Rewatching Gang, if we want to choose a Park Hye Ryun drama, in particular the ones which include an element of supernatural ability in one of her characters, we have the following to choose from:

    I Hear Your Voice, 2013 (18 episodes)
    Pinocchio, 2014-2015 (20 episodes)
While You Were Sleeping, 2017 (16 episodes)

Other Series that Were Suggested Long Ago:
My Love From the Star, 2013 (Alien romance. 21 episodes)
    Chicago Typewriter, 2017 (Ghost/Past lives? 16 episodes)
Durian’s Affair, 2023 (Time travel from Joseon to 2023. 16 episodes)
Tunnel, 2017 (Detective time travels through a portal. 16 episodes)

    Do you want to vote?

Hi All, I’m around but I may be a bit late or I may disappear for a while here and there. Not to worry… I’ll be back!!!

  3. Hi GB.
I can say for sure: No to Chicago Typewriter. Not really a bad drama, and even good moments, but I somehow droped it. Or just stopped to watch for no clear reason, except maybe some boredom?

  4. Hello @GB! I am here. Ready to start.

  5. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Hi @WE @SD! Let’s start NOW!!!

  6. Hi SD.
Looks like it’s the exact time.
    So let’s start. GO!

  7. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

For the last episode we’ve been in the past with Ae Ri and only now we find out that once again Kim is in trouble, dying? What’s AR to do when she does not know what state he’s in.

  8. Hello everyone. I am here.

  9. @WE, I dropped both ‘I hear your voice’ and ‘Pinocchio’ but they are still on my watch list as is ‘While you were Sleeping’. I am up for a rewatch of ‘Durians Affair’ although it has a lot of tropes (and gentrified potty humor – Joseon ladies you know), mostly because we could revisit discussions of ‘Fate’ (or so I remember). This one was my suggestion. ‘My Love from the Star’ is fun and I could always do a rewatch of that one. I have not watched ‘Tunnel’. It sounds the most similar to what we have been watching. ‘Chicago Typewriter’ is also on my watch list but a ways down.

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

This episode we get more people discovering more things that were hidden.

We see that Do Kyun believes faster than past Kim does, that there were messages from the future.

Hyun Chae finds Kim’s trauma tablets and takes steps to find out what they are for.

  11. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @MM! You’re able to join us today!

  12. Damnit, I’ll be late, I just got a problem with why video-reader (after graphics update). I needed to install another one, so I just start the episode now.

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @WE, @SD, @MM,
I’m more inclined to suggest Durian’s Affair because it’s one I haven’t watched yet and it sounds ‘cute’.

  14. Hi @MM!, @WE, I forgot to say hello. I am also behind as I stopped to write that longish text at just the wrong moment.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

More memories return to past Kim. He will hopefully be less rigid and cold towards Ae Ri as well. His memories lead him to visit Kim Jin Ho in this past timeline, which is something that would have made all the difference if he’d done it in the earlier timeline.

  16. DG from the past discovers the phone.
What means it will update his memory in the present.

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

We also get to see what a sad wimp Do Kyun is, trying to please Hyun Chae in the present and in the past. He really did dedicate all his life to her. If only he knew that his words would come true. It was a sad foreshadowing of what a slave he was to her. In the past also he said he’d do anything she wanted, just to keep her from breaking off with him. He voluntarily sold himself to Hyun Chae, and he did not even know her background.

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I see that DG gets the phone messages. However at one time he did have Kim’s phone and refuse to give it to Kim at the crucial 10:33pm time.

  19. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

In this new past, it really happens that Kim’s wife and child are both dead whereas in the previous past timeline, their deaths had been faked. Things have turned out worse than before!!!

  20. I still find fascinating the concept that the person touched by the time change device (the cell phone here, the incense sticks in Nine Nine Times) can remember the changed past. Only Han Ae Ri ought to have the clear memories of her past and all the changes to the future. Although I don’t think she remembers that she originally killed Geon Wook and went to jail for that on the very first time line. Although that was before the conversations started, so I guess that makes sense. Still, although I am not as conversant with newer time travel timelines in Western literature and movies, that idea of an intrinsic almost cellular memory seems something unique to this genre. Does anyone know otherwise?

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I find this an episode where Kim Jin Ho suddenly is getting a lot of attention. He is visited by Ae Ri’s mum who gives him money for his daughter’s surgery. She and he relate as parents with children they want to protect. She has a favour to ask of him as well.

Later it’s Kim Seo Jin who visits Jin Ho. He also relates to Kim Ho as a father of a daughter of the same age. He also offers to take care of Ji Ah’s surgery.

Meanwhile, Killer Lee hears that Jin Ho has pulled out of the deal to do the kidnapping and decides to kill him. Do Kyun puts a stop to that for the time being.

  22. @GB My thoughts too about HC and DK. We see how she uses his sense of inferiority to manipulate him.

  23. What a nice toxic romance. ^^
Now she’ll make her boyfriend a murderer…. oO!

  24. I don’t know why/how happened the accident, but HC died into it!! DG have only one possibility now: change Time too! But he should get a memory update I suppose.

  25. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@SD, I never questioned it. I assumed that if something changed in my past, then I’d have those past memories added to my current ones. However if you recall Queen In Hyun’s Man, whenever the ML returned or the future changed, the past girlfriend disappeared and the one we see suddenly finds themselves in an unfamiliar situation, without memories of the in between past days.

  26. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE but first Hyun Chae murders the stuffed toy looking for the tracking device. She finds it, hence she realises that the messages which could have been fake are actually true and really from the past/future with Seo Jin.

Now she discovers that Kim is taking something for mental distress.

  27. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Listening to the police about what he could do to help search for her mother and to her friends pathetic idea of printing flyers, AR remembers how it was Kim who had given her great assurances and had helped her once to find her mother. He had the means which others don’t seem to have, but the Kim they have in their current time is not the helpful Kim of the future. That Kim had to be moulded by suffering and loss to become more humane.

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

What an evil smile Hyun Chae has after she sees Kim in a cold sweat over his memories of her ‘death’ in the past.

  29. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Now Hyun Chae pretends to be sick to stay home and go through Kims study looking for clues from the past on why he’s taking the pills. It almost backfires on her because Kim actually came back home with medicine for her!

  30. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Kim keeps getting memories but he thinks they are delusions.

So he still does not believe AR while DG and even Hyun Chae are beginning to believe.

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

When Hyun Chae hears that Killer Lee was searching for AR’s mum too but without telling Do Kyun, AR gets a calculating look in her eyes. She does not really trust Do Kyun to be able to carry out the dirty work of murder himself. So hearing that Killer Lee was not always reporting to Do Kyun puts ideas into her head.

  32. I suppose Lee works directly for the company CEO.

  33. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, the Yujung CEO always sounds like such a good guy, so caring of his staff and the bereaved families of the Taejung Collapse. He seems a bit too good to be true (and he is!).

  34. @GB, Kim Seo Jin, had suffered in the past, of course — the horrors of being trapped with very little water and no food and no hope in the rubble of a collapsed building, only to be rescued to find his father had committed suicide. He buries that suffering and becomes this icy engineer automan. It is as if the new suffering breaks him open a bit, the more empathetic person he was before, the boy who loved his father and admired him, could come back out.

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

We get a surprising bit of info about Kim Seo Jin and his father. His father has escaped the collapse while Seo Jin had not, yet in the end it’s Seo Jin who’s visiting his dead father’s niche and not the other way around. So now we have the mystery of why his father died.

  36. It’s just a little detail but: the father learns his son is dead, and just after get a letter from university saying his son is accepted. Just to make that more sad. -_-!

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@SD, that’s a good point and true. His old nicer self needed to be broken out of the hard protective shell.

  38. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes, that’s a good way to make the audience cry even harder!!!

Then we get Seo Jin finally apologising to Jin Ho. Killer Lee is upset and with good reason, after this talk with Jin Ho, he latter changes his mind about helping Do Kyun.

  39. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

At timestamp 46:11 we hear Seo Jin admit that his views on his father’s suicide had changed from one where he felt his father had been selfish to one where the pain must have been unbearable if it drove him to suicide. Seo Jin needed to suffer as a father himself to understand that possibility.

  40. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Desperate to find her mother, AR looks for Killer Lee at the meeting on the rebuilding of Taejung New Town. Kim Seo Jin speaks as a victim and the protesting practically stops.

This is probably the reason why Yujung CEO wanted him to head the construction of Taejung. He’d be able to silence the protesters because he was a victim and a survivor. On top of that, he’d lost his father a week before he’d been rescued.

  41. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

While AR is desperate to locate her mum, Hyun Chae’s dad locates her and she’s desperate to be rid of him. what irony.

  42. HUGE!!! He hear himself on the phone!!!
    I can’t think about a best idea.

  43. I need to buy groceries just now, but will come back 15 minutes later.

  44. Bye for now @WE!

  45. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

So what we have are negative votes. We will not Rewatch Chicago Typewriter, but all the other shows listed are possible.

Durian’s Affair has 1 vote from me and @SD does not mind rewatching it. How about the rest of us?

  46. I’m back. No idea about Durian affair. It makes a drama I’ll need to watch first but I don’t have lot of time, so I prefer a drama I already watched, like Park Hyu Rin ones.
Or maybe I can take a break from rewatch party for the next drama.

  47. Or you could do what I have been doing @WE. Watch a couple episodes ahead, more if it is really exciting, LOL!

The cinematography of the Durian Affair is very nice. I can’t remember the screen play though (other than the general outline) so I am not sure if it has any of the nice twists that you like (other than the main one).

  48. @WE, I too really like that he hears his past self talking on the phone. As with Kim Seo Jin, Seo Do Gyun gets a massive headache as he newly ‘remembers’ himself talking with himself. So cool! And now we have the possibility of a time paradox since his past self could realize it was his future self and that could prevent his future self from ever remembering his past self.

  49. All of these dramas except durian’s affair are re watches for me. I don’t really have an opinion on durians affair other than that I am aware it had a rather mixed reception.

  50. Of all the characters we have watched in these rewatches, Kim Seo Jin is in some ways the most interesting. The amount of suffering he goes through over and over again, variations on the theme of loss of his loved ones and his understanding of them result in his internal growth, which we the viewers witness because of the excellent acting of Shin Sung Rok. The fact that this intense internal change plays out in such a complicated plot makes it more difficult to follow (and remember!) but still, Kim SJ is such a fascinating, tragic/heroic figure.

  51. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I’m in the same boat. Not much time but I might be able to watch an episode before the Rewatch, rather than the whole series. Still, we can take votes for other shows.

I guess I don’t mind watching any of them (again).

  52. @SD Yes, this episode In particular, highlights his character development.
