Hi @pkml3, you’re early this week and far in advance for next week’s party. Thank you for the threads! We are enjoying both watching and reading the script, or having read the script, we enjoy watching it come to life in the hands of the competent actors. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Iโ€™m still annoyed with myself for forgetting to put out Ep 1 Open Thread for IHYV in time so I made a note to myself to release this OT and the next one early. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, I wish I could join you tomorrow on the rewatch but Iโ€™ve to meet with a few community leaders. (Sigh. My pleas for common sense will no doubt fall on deaf ears again.)

    Maybe next weekendโ€ฆ.

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

My Dear @pkml3, if there’s one thing that does not seem to be commonly held by people reacting (normally emotionally), it’s common sense. All the best to you!

And when/if you ever you come home to the Rewatch Party, we’ll welcome you with open arms, hugs and kisses!! ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ˜š๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜‡

    Party food and decor!

  4. Hi all, just a quick note to let you know I will not be joining you. I have a funeral to go to of our former church organist and choir director. We will be joining the choir of his current church, 45 minutes away so I will have to leave early for practice. Two of the four pieces are acapella and we are not used to singing together.

    Catch you next week.

  5. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks for letting us know @SD! Be of good voice and enjoy the choir practice. May the soul of your former church organist rest in peace! ๐Ÿ™

  6. @Pm3, hi, if you join for an episode, I give again this link:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/17enIbpi5KOMNiyh48PaKj7kfELo-5fG_/view?usp=sharing

I think you could like it, it’s the original screenplay, with an enough good translation. So it looks a lot like the lines you often do, when analyzing scenes.

  7. Thanks, @WEnchanteur!

  8. I here. I could read ep2 part2. Woo! The feeling of some great scenes was in the script. I’ve read a bit of Ep3, but will complete it after watching.

  9. Strange, I’m alone here?
    Is there a time-change?

  10. Hi WE yes daylight savings we start in 45 minutes

Having The script to read as another wonderful dimension to this rewatch. I am
Also hoping I’ll be able to watch more quickly.

It is so interesting to see how the script writer builds the episode.

  11. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @WE, did you change your Daylight savings to start earlier? We are no longer going to change the watch time for any Daylight Savings because the confusion still happened for both those with and without Daylight Savings. This way, only those with Daylight Savings have to make the adjustment.

We start in 23 minutes time!!!

  12. I am here.

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

We have come to one of those great twists that is so good because it originates for the big concept ie the concept that SH can read minds

If not for his ability and for his telling HS that Do Yeon thought her and Sung Bin to have been the โ€˜sameโ€™ ie to have been unjustly accused and protesting their innocence, HS would not have changed the plea to โ€˜Not Guiltyโ€™.
Everyone expected her to be lazy and just get Sung Bin a reduced sentence by pleading guilty and asking for leniency. Kwan Woo, Judge Kim Kong Sook (and his 2 other judges), Do Yeon and even SH did not expect that HS would change the plea. This was such a great highlight moment when HS herself also made a twist and started to become a good lawyer.

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Hi @FF, @WE, @MM … we start NOW!!!

  15. Hi GB and FF.
Then I had time to read almost the full episode. Keeping the end for reading after. ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. As we both commented last time, The Reactions of others in the courtroom really emphasized How unexpected the plea was.

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

We get the point of view of Kwan Woo this week.

  18. It’s the ending scene with a new point of view (comedy) from KWAN-WOO.

  19. Hi@GB, @WE and@MM.

  20. Hi MM.
    The (bleep bleep) ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Now we get the point of view of Judge Kim. First we see HS struggling then the tide starts to turn.

  22. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

HS gets more and more confident as SH reads the judge’s mind and gives her the OK sign. It was a win that was won by both of them together.

SH remembers how HS had been courageous enough to stand up for him when he had been a child. He smiles, seeing that same girl in HS again.

  23. Haha pen ink on HS’s face.

  24. HS Does not need SH Telepathic powers About the thud and the student not really seeing the actual event.

  25. It’s trial with twists after twists. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF HS was so intent on her defence that she marked her own face.

  27. HS looks at herself in the mirror and did not notice the pen ink on her face. Mistakenly gives SH a peck on his cheek.

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, yes she was capable of being a reasonably good lawyer but she never tried until this case. And it took SH’s abilities and constant communicaiton with her to keep her going stronger and more confidently.

I like that she and Sung Bin were so confident of her innocence that they welcomed the victim coming to testify.

  29. I find SH amazing, he recognizes HS after years of not seeing her and recognizes MJK’s voice also after years of not hearing his voice.

  30. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes, now we get the twist that makes everyone think the prosecution will succeed. The lawyer never had a chance to investigate the witness herself and so did not know what other concerns Moon Hee has that would make her lie.

  31. I am confused about his telepathic powers. I thought at 1 point It was indicated that he needed to be looking someone in the eye to read their minds.

Then I thought if he had not looked them in the eye at 1 point in time.He could subsequently read their minds.

However in the very first episode and now we know that he hears multiple thoughts from people passing by.

  32. HS doesn’t bother to talk to him now. She looks at him and just think “go out of the way”. ๐Ÿ˜€

  33. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Looking at the hairstyles, it occurs to me that there were some 3-4 changes in hairstyles for HS’s and DY’s characters. This show bothered to convince us of the number of months that passed between events.

  34. @GB, I think the prosecution cannot just bring in a witness at the last minute. Time should be given to the defending side to investigate the witness.

  35. Just after he hears the murderer’s voice. We have a flashback to the original courtroom scene where he reads the murderer’s mind.

  36. HS is upset that she could lose the case to DY, blames SH for making her change her stance.

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, yes, this part is a bit different from our original understanding of how SH reads minds. It’s not only when he looks into people’s eyes, but when they are around him. In the case of Killer Min, he did not see him but he heard his voice. if he had seen him, he would have recognised him immediately.

  38. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF HS’s mum brings her up by being very harsh in her scolding. She’s a loach who has become a worm instead of a dragon Ouch!

  39. I see the importance of the scene of her mother bringing chicken as building up to a climactic scene later. Everyone has met her mother and liked her. Also, it is important as the scene outside the office and about her mother’s faith Or lack thereof in her daughter.

  40. @GB, yes the mom is harsh but HS is still her pride. At the time when she was killed by MJK she is still confident that she brought HS up right.

  41. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM I felt very bad for both mother and daughter. Mother so disappointed that after she had been praising her to the office people to be shown to be so ‘wrong’ and I feel bad for HS who is humiliated in front of all those people. Most unfortunate, but at the same time, a needed poke.

Despite mum’s harsh words, the banners were not taken down.

  42. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, By contrast, Lawyer Shin has no faith in HS and expects her to quit.

  43. @FF I think in the real world a lawyer would have asked to vet that the witness first.

So this is some poetic license for the sake of the plot.

  44. Maybe it is due to the way HS’s mom harsh talking style that resulted in HS have difficulties expressing gratitude and thankfulness.

  45. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, now we get the important scene with Hwang Dal Joon and the mention of Min Joon Gook’s name to Shin.

After the scenes in court and with her mum, HS is thinking hard while walking. This time she does not have the revolving door to go around in.

  46. The actress playing DY Is so good at being infuriatingly superior And insulting.

  47. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, yes, I believe that’s why HS is also so prickly and cold generally. She puts up a veneer of not caring about others which is only half true. When she cares, she really cares a lot, hence it could be her protective mechanism to be rude.

  48. @MM, yeah, she’s a golden arrogant bitch. ๐Ÿ™‚

  49. HS’s pride Suffers so much after these insults that she retreats To a defensive mode and loses track of Her role as a public defender to achieve justice.

  50. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, Yes Lee Da Hee can be all kinds of characters and she’s very infuriating in this show.

LOL SH prepares to fight and with every bend in his body cricks can be heard. In the end he gets past it all without a fight. But later he has to fight and he does well enough.

  51. Check internet history as a pretext for close contact and touching the hand. ๐Ÿ™‚

  52. @WE, I find her pretty though. Someone who is pretty, comes from a rich family with intelligence. The eye sore to other girls.

  53. @FF, oh yeah, she’s pretty! It’s cherry on the cake. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  54. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM now HS has to swallow her pride anyway to get help for the Sung Bin case. Such a good joke how she chases Shin to get his help. Fortunately Kwon Woo likes her and is a good lawyer plus an ex-policeman.

  55. DONG-HEE: (snapping) Let her go! I was in prison too! Trapped in a prison she made without knowing why!

This line is so apt. At least Seong Bin realizes that she is at fault and apologized to Dong Hui.

  56. Her mother.
‘s way of putting her back on track is not gentle. ๐Ÿ˜ Such an excellent interplay between mother and daughter.

I Am wondering , if feeling grateful and expressing it opens SH To feelings of humiliation. Both mother.
And daughter were so Abandoned and humiliated by DY’s family.

  57. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF It took SB long enough to realise that what was fun and a joke to her was very hurtful for Dong Hee.

  58. My previous comment is referring to the scene outside the office after her mother has brought the chicken..

  59. There are suggestions that SB Was not the only Bullying culprit , and maybe not even the initiator at first.

I did not catch that on first watch

  60. It’s a drama where lot of characters have a kind of redemption, healing after moral conflict, like Dong Hee or Sung-Bin. But about the hardboiled Do-Yeon, it will take a lot more time. LOL!

  61. Lawyer Shin sends HS a tip to help her, so he relented.

  62. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

SB needed a wake up call from Dong Hee’s confessing how she had been isolated and hurting… and t hen recalls that she too knew the feeling and so decided to apologise.

Similarly, HS needed a wake up call and that was given to her by her mum.

  63. We get the explanation she can change her testimony, but writer doesn’t bother us to see the end of the trial, as we guess it will end well.

  64. @WE, because Do Yeon is pretty, comes from well to do family, her father was a judge and she is intelligent. She has to be right all the time, yes it will take a while and drastic events for her to realize redemption.

  65. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, I believe SB was the resident bully/delinquent and whomever she picked on would also get picked on by others who wanted to avoid SB’s attention. She might have started it and found that she had an audience watching, hence she went too far, enjoying the limelight.

  66. A theme in this episode is About admitting to your mistakes. When the female lead encounters the ball playing boys , she does not admit to having ruined their ball.

  67. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

There is a change in attitude towards HS in the office now. Her colleagues step forward to help her and give support because she has not given up on SB in the end, but has decided to give it her best shot.

Also they felt bad that her mum had humiliated her.

  68. @GB, yes Seong Bin is at the top of the packing order among the bullies in school. She takes the lead and the rest follows.

  69. Scene of harsh conflict.
Do-Yeon breaks her pen out of anger. LOL.

  70. I like that although HS’s mom is talks harshly to her, there are no grudge between them. HS calls her mom to inform her that she won the case and her mom conceals her happiness and still speaks in a harsh tone.

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, Well yes… it’s about lying and admitting the truth … so the idea of perjury is brought up.

  72. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I kind of like how this show gives us the way holes in the law can be found to get a defence. Probably a real lawyer would roll their eyes!

It was a clever move and showed that Lawyer Shin had given the case a lot more attention than he ever admitted. He pretended that he didn’t care at all for HS’s struggles.

  73. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM continuing on the topic of lying… Do Yeon refuses to admit that she tried to keep Dong Hee from testifying to the truth. But it’s not clear if DY ever thought SB was innocent, so it’s hard to say that she did it deliberately to not save SB.

In any case when poked by HSm DY still refuses to admit her lie of 10 years ago.

  74. Such a great scene of SH Waiving the ball playing bullies under his leg. Again an instance of power and humiliation.

  75. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL mum’s victory dance that her daughter is really a good lawyer. HS decides to value and keep one of the posters after deriding them.

In the mean time SH has started thinking that Killer Min needs to be checked on. I like the pace where all kinds of things are happening concurrently and slide smoothly along.

  76. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE Another twist where HS thinks that the messages comes from SH who admires her… only to face humiliation. But SH starts to realise a bit later that the messages could come from Killer Min.

  77. The gang fighting Soo-Ha, to put more stress and giving the feeling he can’t save HS in time. By the way, they shouldn’t try that again, because he put them down, all of them.

  78. @GB I commented on the instance of the ball playing Boys Because it is a rather trivial example of not admitting to one’s mistake but keeps up the theme very nicely. And of course reinforces her characterization.
As someone whose Pride really gets in the way.

  79. We can track the setup and payoff, over more than one episode. For example, about this schoolboy gang, used in episode 1 for comedy. Reused now at half episode, so Soo-Ha can convince HS. As a logical consequence, the gang wanting revenge and slowing Soo-Ha at worst moment, during the cliffhanger.

  80. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM yes that’s true. She has too much pride but over time she loses the worst of it.

  81. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes, the 3 boys brought in their ‘chief’ and more boys to fight SH. The cliffhanger is whether he gets to HS in time and why the phone of “I’ll be there” is ringing in her own apartment. So tantalising.

  82. Even throw away comments harken back To earlier scenes. SW Says how SH Used all his post notes trying to get the head lawyer’s attention and help. She is basically begging the head lawyer to help her and then when SW Offers to help. She bites his head off but then relents.

  83. @GB, yes, about the phone message. As the writer gets this element, then use it fully. So, by little touchs, during episode, shows it. Then, when it’s for the cliffhanger suspens, can also be used for comedy purpose. Just need for the writer to catch the idea. Not obvious. Once done, rework a bit the scenes, so in the bus scene, add that SH thinks it’s certainly from Soo-Ha. The comedy is build from far away, in the pure situational comedy style. Just a lot more funny and great than the “one time gag with little stupid sounds”.

  84. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM as you know after rewatching so many times, Post-it Notes are rather important in this Show. HS took a whole bunch (in the shape of a tooth) from the lady giving them out for free (I think advertising a dental clinic). She also uses them to get Shin to help her but he refuses to her face, although he helps her later.

Those Post-its will crop up again.

  85. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, that makes introducing the element of messages on the phone so great. Used for both comedy and as a build-up to something ominous.

In the title ‘I Hear Your Voice’ we get voices heard by SH, voices in the Post-it notes that @MM and I just chatted about and voices in the text messages. We also get phone calls.

  86. On my last watch, I looked up the song”I’ll be there”. I could not really understand why it was chosen other than for those words. I think it was popular around that time, Whitney.
Houston and perhaps michael jackson I think.

I think maybe it is more about I’ll be there to support you and love you.Which would be more suited Of course to the male leads role so perhaps it has a double meaning as a threat and as a reassurance.

  87. It would be worth it to come back later like I did for W, and post some scene and analys.
I’ll upload a new version of the script where I replace the “superior/inferior” characters with { }, because when posting here, it’s considered as html characters and so the line just is deleted.

    Here a funny line:
YOO-CHANG: I respect Attorney Shin, but honestly, this kind of thing makes me lose some respect.

The two guys didn’t know that Shin send to HS the message about “article 159”.

  88. @MM, yes, first the writer need a song everybody knows. But it’s used with irony, as the song speaks about love, but instead it’s a threat here. “I’ll be there”. Yep, “there to kill you”…

  89. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM the song is definitely ambiguous. Hence HS could mistake that it was went by admirers like SH or Kwon Woo.

This thing about double meaning. SH is victim in relation to Min but SH could become the perpetrator when he attacks Min. The same 2 people and the relationship reverses.

  90. @GB Yes I was remembering the original post it notes that advertised the dental office but I had not noted the comment before about you’re using up the post notes. I don’t remember how they come into play in future episodes so i’m looking forward to noting that.

  91. Well I still have twenty minutes left but I think I will watch it later.

Thank you again everyone for such a delightful watch.

    @SD We missed you.

  92. Kind of analys like that:

    _________________________________________________________
    #33. CORRIDOR (D)

Do-Yeon, in her robe, walks with a stern face, holding documents.
Passing bailiffs and staff greet her.

    BAILIFF: Good day, Prosecutor Seo..
DO-YEON: (with a polite nod) Yes. (then her face hardens again as she walks)
    HYE-SUNG: (E) Youโ€™re not a prosecutor.
DO-YEON: (turning to see Hye-Sung) ..!! What are you saying?
HYE-SUNG: (somewhat angry) You knew Sung-Bin was innocent. You knew Dong-Hee would prove it too!! But you blocked that testimony. You obstructed proving her innocence! And youโ€™re a prosecutor, of all people!
DO-YEON: (scoffing) Donโ€™t overreact. I just told the witness the law she needed to know.
HYE-SUNG: Youโ€™re the same as ten years ago. They say people donโ€™t grow if they donโ€™t admit their mistakes.. The old sayings are never wrong, are they?
    DO-YEON: (starting to leave)
HYE-SUNG: (grabbing her firmly) Youโ€™ll probably be the same ten years from now. Not admitting your mistakes, hiding them, framing innocent people, strutting around in your robe pretending to be a great prosecutor?
    DO-YEON: Thatโ€™s enough.
    HYE-SUNG: !
DO-YEON: (mocking) Fine. You did pretty well today, for a public defender. Iโ€™ll give you that. But that doesnโ€™t mean you get to question my qualifications as a prosecutor..
HYE-SUNG: (letting out a bitter laugh, muttering) For a public defender? For a public defender…
    DO-YEON: ?
HYE-SUNG: When I ran into you here, I wondered. Why did I, a mere public defender, have to meet you, a successful prosecutor? Why did fate set us up like this.. But now I get it.
DO-YEON: What are you trying to say?
HYE-SUNG: A big-shot prosecutor losing to a big-shot lawyer doesnโ€™t have much impact, does it?
    DO-YEON: !!!
HYE-SUNG: (emphasizing slowly) Itโ€™s to show you losing to a mere. Public defender. Like todayโ€™s trial..
DO-YEON: Today was the last time. A trial like this wonโ€™t happen again.
HYE-SUNG: (smirking) Really? Then how about this..
    DO-YEON: …
HYE-SUNG: If a trial like today happens again, admit it then. That you can be wrong too..
    DO-YEON: …
HYE-SUNG: (smile fading, serious) And apologize. To me.. and to my mom too.. (turning away with a cold, charismatic face, muttering under her breath) So cool. Total charisma! Jang Hye-Sung!

Do-Yeon, furious, snaps the pencil sheโ€™s holding in half.
In the distance, Sang-Duk had been watching their exchange.

    ————————————-

Do-Yeon, in her robe, walks with a stern face, holding documents.
Passing bailiffs and staff greet her.
    – In this kind of scene, help reader and audience to get the stage. Not always used if the scene starts with a close up or any special transition, like smash cut.

    HYE-SUNG: (E) Youโ€™re not a prosecutor.
    – On this line (E) means an off-screen. We here the voice of HS behind Do-Yeon, but writer makes it important we don’t see her yet.

    DO-YEON: Thatโ€™s enough.
    HYE-SUNG: !
    – It’s not obvious if you aren’t used to read screenplays (I mean western screenplays), but you never see that in western screenplay. Empty line, just reaction. In korean screenplays, reactions matters. It’s the shot on the character face and expression, even if the character says nothing.

HYE-SUNG: (smirking) Really? Then how about this..
    DO-YEON: …
    – Ponctuation matters too. Putting “..” isn’t the same than “…”, it helps to get the time and pause.

HYE-SUNG: (smile fading, serious) And apologize. To me.. and to my mom too.. (turning away with a cold, charismatic face, muttering under her breath) So cool. Total charisma! Jang Hye-Sung!
    – Parenthesis are used at the right time. So we know that the last words are when she goes away.

Do-Yeon, furious, snaps the pencil sheโ€™s holding in half.
In the distance, Sang-Duk had been watching their exchange.
    – It’s the scene ending, you need to end a scene on something bold. Could be the comedy line, but better with the Do-Yeon reaction. Yet, the writer put a layer on top. Shin observing the situation.

  93. I quit for now and see you soon, bye bye.

  94. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @WE and bye! The script is even better when analysed this way!
