Yay! Another thread for this week’s episodes! Thanks @pkml3!
Did you by chance see that the Saturday Drama Specialists are hoping to continue with a new rewatch after Healer’s is over? Would you be interested in it? And would it be okay to have a ‘W-Two Worlds’ rewatch party here? Pretty please? 😃 😇
I’ve been trying to rustle up our @WEnchanteur to see if he can join us too, but I believe he is still otherwise engaged.
Most interesting @pkml3… my comment did elicit the WordPress Subscription, but it has failed to appear here! Sucked into the SPAM folder, I fear!!!
Found it.
Remind me again next week when I get back. Thanks.
I’m allowed only an hour to go through emails while on vacation. See ya.
Thanks and See Ya @pkml3. Hope your vacation is going great! 😁
Have a great vacation @PM3!!! I also try not to do work-related emails during vacation but BoD is not “work”, right? 😉 have fun and enjoy! We will miss you.
@Packmule3, I decided to go back and do a deep dive into Episode 1, because it is foundational. I’ve written up a paper on motifs, and have sent you a copy by email. Use it or not, at your discretion.
What a lovely show this is in how gently and respectfully it examines the foibles of being human, together with the more weighty issues of mental health. Episode 7 was filled with so much warmth, an abundance of humour, and was so full of good humour as well. What an irony, – and a source of sadness perhaps – that the person who seems the most mentally sound, is also the one who may be the weakest physically.
Our requests are answered. We’ve been given the backstories of Ju Young Do’s marriage, how Ga Yeong is in his life, and further confirmation of Ian Chase’s childhood. Those toothbrushes make a re-appearance, poignantly, and explain why he should want 10 new ones every day.
In the so-called ‘timeline’ of our protagonists’ childhood, it was obvious that there was a childhood meeting, and we have confirmation of another one. So yes, we are back to Nanum Jeil Prayer House (Child Trafficking HQ) and we understand why Kim Myeong Ja could have been/would likely have been a victim of murder.
I felt it must have been very tiring for DJ the 2-3 days covered in this episode. Strangled and shocked, taking care of Ga Yeong, hearing the back stories, empathising and sympathising, and understanding the situation with Ju. But she took it all in her stride, with aplomb and good grace, and she was able to give and receive at the same time.
I loved the many emotions that this episode elicited and the constant reveals that moves us forward towards another cliff hanger.
Kalimera Everyone,
Things are pretty hectic at this time, so I cannot write down my thoughts about Episode 7 as I want to, nor I can engage into conversation about Episodes 5-6 as I want to. I will return at some point to write some more about this week’s episodes.
The only I want to write is that the last 15 minutes of Episode 7 is a scene that actors / actresses should be taught in a seminar.
Kim Dong Wook and Seo Hyun Jin nailed it. I will analyze this later on.
See ya all!
@GB,
I wanted to write that with the revelations of their entagled past:
Ian Chase is the one who went to Dr. Ju’s clinic.
If you remember the scene one of the twins went near Dr. Ju and stepped upon his foot. The exact thing happened when they were kids. So, it wasn’t JM. He didn’t do that. He couldn’t copy it. This is an internal mechanism.
So, if that data is valid, then Ian Chase entered Korea earlier as we have speculated before.
The thing is in that visit in Dr. Ju’s office, the name he gave was American but it was another one, I mean not Ian Chase, I think I recall a picture of his passport was shown? I have to check again.
Still, all those add to the confusion of how many them are indeed or if the theory about the multiple personalities is valid.
Hi @Cleo, thanks for your thoughts even though you’re so busy. Take care!
Yes, I’m glad we’re on the same page on that doubt again… the same ones we had in Ep 1-3. Are there just identical twins? Is there a 3rd look-alike? Or if there is only 1 remaining twin, does he have more than 1 personality. If Chase is dreaming about what he personally went through and how he met JYD as a child, then it seems he’s also the one who visited JYD as an adult, who stepped on his foot, whom Ju diagnosed very quickly as a sociopath.
Rather than conjecturing further, (because we will keep going around in circles), I will wait for more to be revealed. 😉
Hey my lovely @GB,
Thank you! It gives me pleasure to talk with all of you.
That’s why I am active for now. Take care as well! <3
As you have said, it is a loop. I will be waiting to see more tonight.
If we get more information on that mystery part.
What is valid is that some theories we all have are coming true.
My assetment that Dr. Ju felt too much that it broke his heart, came true.
He feels so much. He always did and always will.
I agree that with your phrase that "the most mentally sound, is also the one who may be the weakest physically".
*to be continued…
There is a suggestion for an additional couple now, and I can’t be more delighted. More about them later.
I agree with @Cleo about the last minutes of Ep 7. Those kinds of scenes should have been written into many scripts of kdrama couples. It was the most sensible response/reaction that so many shows fail at offering. Plus here, it was acted with beautiful sensitivity and finesse by KDW and SHJ.
It was just so healthy! LOL No need for noble idiocy or deliberate subterfuge. The revelation was so full of respect for self and the other, to aid in understanding and clear misconceptions. It was so contrary to the reactions of poor Ga Yeong towards Patrick’s advances.
What gave me the greater pleasure though, was that DJ didn’t just leave. In the same way that she gave Ga Yeong assurances and acknowledgment, DJ returned to comfort and acknowledge Ju’s difficult reality. It was life-giving. I think I was both crying and smiling at the same time.
Here’s a great lesson (for us ‘normal?’ people) in how to respond ‘normally’.
@GB,
This is the part I wanted to analyze from directional point of view.
The director is vocal at that scene. They didn’t utter a word, still their ACTIONS speak volumes. He showed us that they are in the same page. He expressed their feelings at that embrace.
DJ returns to him, voluntarily. She hugs him. – Light On-
He is taken back. – Light Off-
He then, decides to be with her in this. – Light On –
That’s why I said the whole sequence must be taught in the seminar.
Actor wise, script wise, directing wise, they nailed it!
So true @Cleo! Such a well thought out and well-made scene. I was going to write a note on it but you’ve done it better! Read ya again!!
My agapimeni @GB,
I loved that 15 minute sequence. Mostly because it is a mirror of what Aristotle said in his Poetica, at that scene the audience feels “fear and pity”,
which is the definition of Drama. This build up will bring Catharsis.
I am glad that DJ finally let go of her indecision of what to do regarding YD and she went to him.
Oh, I am waiting their love to flourish…
I knew the foot stepping felt familiar. I want to go back and rewatch the scene where he comes into his office. Was that episode 2?
I loved episode 7. Which basically just means I’ve loved them all. When GY gave the details of Dr Ju saving her and DJ responded with care and concern for GY ahh…so good. Had the last conversation between Dj and dr ju not occurred, this would’ve been my favorite. I’m really enjoying the actress playing GY as well.
Dr Ju’s friends are so perfect. I feel like we’ve seen shows lately focused on female friendship but this illuminates beautiful male friendship, which is just as important. We saw one taking care of his health and the other confronting the badmouthers.
The conversation Ian chase had with Dj.
He apologized and she shared her past nightmare. When she said I shared too much and he said no you made me feel better. I loved that dialogue as well. I really have no idea what they’re going to do with this character. Redeem him? Show he’s completely innocent?? Make us feel bad for him and then reveal he’s an actual psychopath???
Dr Ju and Dj conversation at the end…perfect. I loved his facial expressions and pauses and his honesty. I wonder what her immediate response was when he said “let’s be friends”? The ending shot was very interesting with the sensor light. When the doorbell first rang, I looked to his monitor to see if it showed her face like it did the first time she rang the bell and it was all black—I got nervous it might be a fake out and Ian chase was about to show up and murder him. When Dj hugged him I felt A LOT of relief 😂
Thanks @GB, @Cleo, @Birdie for your insights on ep7. Like you, I’m enjoying this show. It has a fine balance of serious topics, a compelling love story (and budding side love lines), funny and crazy parts, and crime/mystery. However, I do not have bandwidth right now (real life and work stuff get in the way) to do full analysis and share as much as you all have. But I read all your posts and I’m super grateful for them. BoD folks love to watch, read, and write! Also back reading @Welmaris notes!
Ep7 Quick reactions – I hate it that DJ did not report Ian choking her to the police or hotel management. I know this is her resilient personality (which makes her great in customer service industry) but I just can’t!!! This is probably why she is a “trash magnet”, too. Empathy is fine but also having a sense of self preservation is needed. If she had him reported, he may need to go through psychiatric evaluation and maybe even help him get better. She is not helping him at all for giving him a free pass.
Such mature yet childish conversations between the OTP during The scenes in The stock room! Aww, my heart fluttered seeing them together that way and so did the cafe employee. LOL!!
Last 15 min scenes – the dialogue, the camera work and the on/off lights. Beautifully executed. And there’s a bit of epilogue too when she ran from the bus stop back to his house. Reminded me of when he ran during the snow fall and now she is returning the act. And the hug and embrace… I honestly love their journey as a couple. I hope they can be more than friends. No one is assured of forever, sometimes it’s just one day at a time and living in The present.
@Cleo – hmm so Ian can be the guy who became a patient of YD. great catch on the stepping on the foot. Then, Ian can be the psycho killer (a killer returns to his scene of the crime) and he may have multiple personality. He definitely acted different than Ian the doctor.
@Birdie – I don’t think she used the dorrbel
When she came back. There was no face on the monitor. I thought I heard knocking. I was even apprehensive it was a killer. I’m glad it was DJ.
Hi @birdie007, I really loved all those conversations too.
Episode 8 – Wow this was another, super entertaining episode. It had me in stitches over and over again. The misconceptions and misunderstandings continue uproariously, and yet it wasn’t a light episode. And after all the laughter it elicited, what a terrific, chilling ending, or sort of cliff hanger, we get. The real killer, likely passed among our protagonists, but no one, except us viewers, even noticed him.
While the relationships go on we get a new development in a new crime, that is likely linked to the previous murders. So with this new case, Det Ko can have the excuse to continue to investigate his old cases and Lee Jeong Beom’s death.
On the more poignant side, we come to the question of identity. The sad case of Chase’s identity or lack thereof, and Mum’s puzzlement of Ju’s identity with regard to DJ.
I liked the take on being friends, and how friendship meant so much to GY, who did get a surprise friend after all, while it had a different interpretation for Ju and DJ. And how difficult it was for friendship or how easily a friend could be made, depending on who, and why and how.
@Welmaris brought up good points in the Open Thread on perspective and misunderstanding depending on perspective. These continue both in the area of the investigation and among the friends and acquaintances.
I liked the voiceover on what hugs mean, and what DJ gave to GY in the words of concern, she gave to Young Do in the gesture of the hug. Even GY was in a hugging state, although typically, she just stood there and waited for the hug to come.
I commend this team of actors and the PD for the fantastic comedic timing, and their on point expressions, and the Writer for cooking up so many situations which can be milked for hilarity. I can’t remember laughing so much with a show that is not even a comedy.
I love the ML-FL relationship so much! It’s honest and sincere with very funny moments.
Hello my Dear GB, Janey, Cleo, Welmaris, birdie, and Sayaris.. I hope you’re doing well.
Thank you so much @packmule for making this thread, have a great vacation!
Thank you all for your comments in this thread despite your busy schedule..
(Anyway, it might be not important..I’m trying to track whether our Dr Ju has said “Oh Dear” in every episode or not.. and yes.. he said it in every episode. Oh Dear..) 😂
After watching episode 7 and 8, I like this drama even more, so far I was satisfied with the stories, the acting, and the cinematography. Don’t want it to end so soon.. 🥲
Like @Sayaris said, the relationship between DJ and JYD is honest and sincere. The funny moments between them, and the crime/mystery making it complete.
@GB
Yes right after we discussed about how we need to see the background story of Ga Yeong and her marriage with JYD, episode 7 gave us all of them. At those part, I was reminded by the fact of several Korean celebrities that took their own lives. Many people around me questioning why would they do that. They got fame, wealth, etc. But their depression was real. For some people that never been in this condition, they might not get it and couldn’t understand how hard it and how suffocating it is was for them. What GY felt back then was true, and I was touched by what JYD did back to her. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have someone like JYD around. Suicidal is real and serious thing and JYD acts very consistent about this. Later in current timeline, when his patient sent him text as if he would end his life that night, JYD patiently waiting in the cold weather outside his house to make sure that his patient aware there is someone that care for him. The scene when the patient finally showed up and go to JYD, and JYD patted his arm was so 🥺
We’ve also given the flashback of 1992. It is 2 years before 1994 when the encounter of DJ and the twin happened. We also know the twin original names were the same: Choi Jeong Min. I also understand why Ian Chase suffered with these dream. I assume that the mother chose his brother to stay longer with her, so that Ian Chase was given the syrup to made him fall asleep. I imagine that it was a nightmare for a child when waking up in a unfamiliar surroundings, no mother, no brother. He must felt that he was abandoned there. And so we get to see his encounter with little JYD, pushing his kindness away, because he was so hurt inside. Finally we see their separation moment, when JYD was picked up by his father. The little Ian Chase clenched his fist. I can’t imagine what he must have felt.. jealousy, anger, sad, hurt?
What I am thinking is that he felt that again in the end of eps 8, when JYD turned DJ around and she hold his hand afterwards.
I’m agree with @Cleo on the possibility that Ian Chase was the one who come into JYD’s clinic. He gave his name as Chae Jun back then.
We have talked about the Hong Se Geun and the possibility of him to still alive, if I’m not mistaken I saw him again. The one who wear a mask, cap and have a long hair (shoulder length haircut). Their eyes look the same.. I don’t know but is it possible that he is the culprit we’ve been searching for. The one who stabbed Officer Park, the one who also killed the homeless man. We also see the scene when Ian Chase checkout from the hotel and live in the apartment. The woman told him to change the passcode so “the man” couldn’t enter his room. But Ian Chase said he wouldn’t do that because he wanted “the man” to come for him instead. Before DJ entered the cafe, we saw a glimpse of a man who wear a cap that walking out from the cafe. If Ian Chase is being followed by him then it is also possible that he is the one who put the tissue rose on Ian Chase’s table. We don’t know for sure so let’s see for the next episodes.
@birdie007,
I also like the scene when GY told DJ her story and DJ responded perfectly. I imagined that GY must see a lot of JYD too in DJ. Both DJ and JYD give the right responses to her. She is so lucky to meet them. The conversation between GY, Eunha and DJ was also great. And just like that.. GY made a new friend..
JYD’s friends also really care for him. I was laughing when they were imagining what happened between DJ and JYD in the night😂
What surprised me is that Ha Neul actually have “platinum” physical strength. He seems soft because he cries easily, but even the trainer (Han Jin Jo) was amazed by him. Did she bite Haneul’s arm? Omg what was she thinking.. 😅😅😅
And finally scenes between DJ and JYD. Started with fluttering stock room conversation.. followed by JYD confession, which made me somehow teary eyed. I think that was the saddest confession I’ve ever seen lately. I like how in that night DJ was running back to his apartment and hugged him. The JYD’s voice over also made it perfect. The childhood issues of JYD were embraced perfectly by DJ.. Super agree with @Cleo, they nailed it!!! For me, it was a poignant and beautiful. I like this couple very mucch.. Next, we get to see the follow up scenes when DJ wrote a lovely short letter to the radio. “Can we be friends?” if I was in that room I want to tell her that you should be more than that.. hahaa..
I was laughing hard when DJ stuttering explained about the cookies to JYD, they were arranged as if they sleep together under the blanket (this why GY is needed in this show 😅).. and last, DJ even ripped his shirt and the buttons were fallen.. I was surprised by this scene and laughed again..
Oh Dear..
PS: I’m with @Janey regarding DJ’s reaction after Ian Chase choked her. She at least could suggest him to see the expert to treat his psychological wounds. Well maybe she thought since Ian Chase is the doctor, he would have been know what he must do actually. But she shouldn’t let it slide.. I wonder what would JYD do to him in the future. The way how JYD look at him in the hospital restroom, he must have realized that there is something wrong with him. I don’t know much about this, but unless Ian Chase wanted to be helped to heal himself then maybe it will be hard for other people to save him..
hi…i’m sooooo sorry to be out of topic..
does anyone here care to watch you are my glory c-drama to dissect scene by scene & dialogue by dialogue & expression to expression…??pretty please..?
i need friends…and more insight to satisfy my crave..?
Now I understand what @GB meant when she laughed many times in Ep8. LOL! The imagination of his friends and the cafe staff were hilarious. Nothing beats the reality of that hug and embrace. YD narration during that hug was also touching. And not to miss the funny shirt grabbing, button-popping scene!!!
Talking about hugs, the airport scenes of greetings were meta from Love Actually! Nicely copied, it suited the situation with Patrick and GY.
I initially thought DJ was writing a diary entry until her letter got read on the radio. What a way to put JD on a spot. 300 comments serving as punches for the fool who friend-zoned the girl. DJ definitely wants to be more than friends. “am I a friend bot?” And when GY and her cafe owner friend were vying fo being DJ’s friend and the suddenly bonded over Patrick, she felt left out.
Hi @yzabella, we do have a ‘You are My Glory’ thread here on BOD. You can find lots of friends there LOL. I can’t promise that there’ll be meticulous dissection, but I think there will be because @pkml3 will be back from her vacation and will be watching it.
You can go to: https://bitchesoverdramas.com/2021/01/22/you-are-my-glory-yang-yang-and-dilraba/ to read what’s going on.
My dear YAMS friends!!! @Janey, @moonstar, @Sayaris, @Cleo, @birdie, @Welmaris
I’m so glad we are enjoying these episodes together. I’m imagining us on different couches/beds/chairs all sniggering together at the hilarious scenes!! I share the study with my son, and I think he got fed up with me breaking into laughter, so he left in disgust LOL.
You’ve all brought up the main points and the very same things I noticed. We all seem to be on the same page with this show. What a relief, after so much trying to decipher the meaning of stuff on DAYS and TE:EM lol. When we are in agreement, it means that I’m not imagining things or reading too much into what I see.
I’m coining Episode 8 the ‘Hug-Hug/Friend-Friend Episode’ 😉
I’m going to go look for the BTS of all those cringe-worthy imagined scenes of DJ and JDY together. The hottest seems to be Ari’s take on them LOL.
You know what pleasantly surprised me? The 2 guys Cheol Do and Patrick actually figured out accurately what was likely going on with JDY and DJ. They are not the main characters, but they have been given insight into the situation. CD based it on his knowledge of JDY who would have not wanted to hurt DJ, and Patrick based it on DJ’s reaction in the conversation with Ga Yeong. They are objective observers, not viewing through their ‘Me’ lens like GY, or the overly sentimental lens (Ha Neul) or the overly racy lens (Ari and Seong Won).
They show us that we who are objective viewers will be able to observe and get a true understanding of what’s going on, as long as we don’t put on the lenses of preconceptions. We spoke a bit about all the misinterpretations/misconceptions that even DJ has about herself in Episode 1.
Now we have DJ’s Mum, eschewing the conclusions that she wrongly made, and wanting to know the ‘identity’ of JDY. She does not want to make wrong guesses, but sends Tae Jung to investigate. It will be fun having TJ been on the scene too, observing like we are doing and to see his conclusions.
It will be most interesting if TJ is present with DJ, Chase, and JDY, because these 4 were kids in 1992 at or near Nanum JC. When they come together again in 2021, what may be stirred up, if they could jointly share their memories or even irritate each other.
Yes, @moonstar, I was thinking that the masked man who most likely left the paper rose and who killed the homeless man, is none other than Hong Se Geun who really should have died.
Read ya all again later!
@yzabella – I plan to watch YAMG but will have to do it this weekend. We will be “dissecting” YangYang… and the story too! LOL! See you in that thread.
@Growingbeautifully I laughed a lot during this episode too! The scene with the biscuits, the “I’ll be back”, etc. This drama mixes really well the romance, the comedy and the thriller part.
Kalimera my agapimenes @GB, @Janey, @moonstar515, Welmaris, Sayaris, birdie!
Another busy day from my part of the world, you have written beautiful thoughts so, I am going to focus on the last scene.
Here is the screenshot that reveals everything!
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x2gPylNTyARXtyG4ZAMg6gFwhVgmGX6v/view?usp=drivesdk
Look exactly how clever is that Director! He gave us a scene where horizontal lines are dividing the characters. We get to see that Ian Chase is on the right side of the cinematographic frame, whereas our OTP is on the opposite left.
KEY WORD: SYMMETRY —> Reassurance
Check again that YD and DJ are not only in the bigger frame of the windows, but also in the smaller one of the door.
The director is brilliant, he continues the shoot from Episode 7 with this one.
In Episode 7 they embraced and interwined their fates together. They are in the same page, frame etc.
In Episode 8, not only they are in the same page, they are in the same frame twice, both in the bigger one and the smaller one.
They have become an entity for the world, but for themselves too!
They are a couple / a duo.
Should we be waiting for a kiss in Episode 9? Maybe…? *winks*
Also, check again how YD touched the right arm of CJ and how CJ touched YD’s right arm. Symmetry in all points. Do you remember YD’s voiceover about what an embrace means? Those touches in the scene mean reassurance.
I will again repeat myself, but in this scene I’ve got another validation that YD is indeed the sword in that Oracle.
Look how determined YD was to protect CJ, even though he was behind her. She turned to face him and the touch calmed both of them down, even though she was shocked at the time.
As for the killer / man with the cap I don’t know if he can be the man from the Church, mostly because he could be way older than Ian Chase and the OTP. His hair are dark where should be white or at least grey.
I continue to believe that a third twin might be involved. He made that paper flower didn’t he? So, who is he really exactly?
*To be Continued…
Non-existence
There are 2 parts to an identity:
1) One is who we are in terms of our name, family and background.
2) The other is in terms of who we are in relationship with others.
When we consider the basic which is 1) we find that Show has foreshadowed the identity or lack thereof, of Chae Jun / Ian Chase, even from Episode 1. There was a voice over by DJ : “When I ran over, he wasn’t there. He was nowhere.” …”He was never there to begin with.”
What DJ meant at that time was that because Chae Jun was not even a real name, he did not exist to her. To the police, he was identified as Choi Jeong Min, but that was nobody to her. This takes on added poignancy in Episode 7-8 when we find that his identical twin, Chase, never even had a name to begin with.
In his dream flashback, Child Chase had asked Hong Se Geun where his mum and brother were.
Kim Myeong Ja said: “This is him? The one who doesn’t even have a name?” (What a sad way to be identified.)
Chase : “My name is Choi Jeong Min.”
HSG : “That’s your brother’s name.
Chase : Both of our names are Choi Jeong Min.
KMJ knocked him on the head with a rice spoon : “You brat. You might share a spoon or a toothbrush, but you don’t share a name.”
Chase : “But we have the same name. And you don’t share toothbrushes.”
The adults laugh : “Gosh she must have only registered the birth of one of the boys.”
KMJ eyed him as merchandise : “But look at him. Look at the sparkle in his eyes. Hey, you’ll sell well. Twins would have made a better sale. So one of them is leaving today.”
HSG’s voice says in Chase’s memory : “Everyone gets their own name. Choi Jeong Min is your brother. And you don’t have a name.”
Chase : “But my brother and I are both Choi Jeong Min.”
HSG : “And he’s not even your brother now.”
Chase : “I want to call my mum.”
HSG : “And she’s not even your mother now.”
Chase : “What do you mean?”
HSG : “Do what I say and stay here like a good boy. And if the clients like you, then you can get a new mum too.”
My heart breaks for the little boy who understood that he’d been sold away, abandoned by his mum and that the adults would not help him get home. He’d suddenly overnight lost 1). No name or family or background. He had been erased to be sold into a new family. And he’d lost 2) any relationship that he’d known before. He was no one to everyone.
Poor Chase had been disgusted that he had to select from a bunch of used toothbrushes. All the toothbrushes had been over used and none could be identified to belong to just him. This highlighted to him, his nonentity. His abandonment traumatised him so much, that even as a successful neuro-surgeon, he requested 10 new toothbrushes a day, as if to counteract this moment, when he had no choice but to use one out of 10 used toothbrushes.
This is one of the saddest things, to not be given a name: as if he was not even wanted from the very beginning. There is a mystery here too … why should his mother only register one birth, when she had 2 healthy boy twins?
To be given the same name as his brother, meant he was considered unworthy of being recognised as an individual in his own right. He was denied something very basic: his unique identity. Even as an adult, although he may have acquired 1), back in S Korea where his brother had been, the question of 2) remains nebulous. He is nothing to DJ but a hotel guest, and nothing to JDY except a danger to DJ.
Unfortunately, however, he is someone to the masked man/killer? His new identity under 1), does not shield him from how in view of 2), he is being targeted, and followed. He seems to want to confront this person, hence he has chosen to get a place of his own, and not to change the passcode to the door.
Being Somebody
As I mentioned briefly above, the question of identity is stressed by DJ’s mum. Mum enjoys her pink helmet but she’s troubled by the fact that although she knows the gift giver is JDY, she does not know 2) ie who he is to DJ.
Mum to herself : “I don’t know who gave it to me. I’m a bit frustrated because I don’t know.”
She’s wonders if he’s a boyfriend, a guy friend, or a guy who is just passing by DJ.
She tells her son, Tae Jung, her dilemma : “Can I keep liking him or should I bury him? Will he marry my daughter or should I kill him.”
So much of how we know what to do, how to react or respond, depends on both 1) and 2), but I feel it’s more 2) ie the relationship that informs our attitudes.
With Ga Yeong it comes up again. She considers DJ a best friend (LOL because she could fleece her for a place to hide in and mando to eat), but she finds to her chagrin that DJ, (and even trainer Jin Ho pointed it out) did not even consider her a friend at all, let alone a best friend. GY has a blindness with regards to 2). She cannot interpret it accurately as long as she thinks everyone is clamouring to serve her.
When she accosts JDY about friend-zoning DJ, she says: “I may lose my best friend thanks to you.”
Ju : “Are you talking about Patrick?”
GY : “Patrick isn’t my friend. He’s my boyfriend. How could you not tell the difference?”
This points out starkly what Ju is trying and failing to do with regards to 2).
He likes DJ romantically like she is a girlfriend. He even reacts to anything that happens to her as if he is her boyfriend. But to ‘protect’ her from his likely early demise, he tries to identify her as just a friend. And we know it’s going to fail!!! LOL.
@Cleo, @Janey @birdie, I like what you’ve brought up about the last 15 minutes of Ep 7 into Ep 8. I so agree. Yes to the parallels and synchronicity.
And you know what prefigured DJ’s running back to JDY’s place? It was this ‘heart bus’ LOL.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fV0mv7yz06DaiYVYk0EF4UY0F03iaG3h/view?usp=sharing
I believe, that at the end of Ep7, DJ got up to board the bus, but the picture on its side of a beating heart, made her have a change of heart. She literally ran back to Ju’s apartment, to give him, whose heart was ‘uncertain,’ the hug and all that it meant. Shall we be pedantic and add one more point? She didn’t use the doorbell but knocked loudly on the door of his heart. LOLOL. (Sorry, I’m just being silly.)
Oh @GB,
I like this thought! I have missed the bus with that heart, but yes you are right indeed!
There are so many symbolisms in the series. When it will be on our Netflix I will rewatch it again, in order to check them again.
In order to be pedantic too: when he heard that breaking sound, YD run upstairs and banged on her door too… *winks* – LMAO!
Hello, my lovelies! I’ve given up tossing and turning in bed–no luck falling asleep after three hours–so here I am in the wee hours of the morning, in front of my computer.
I’ve been busy helping to put on a multi-day event for my college alumnae association. It is held every summer on campus, but last year and this year it was/is being done via Zoom. It’ll wrap up Saturday afternoon with a 90-minute grand finale, which I am organizing and hosting. Until it is over, the time I can devote to this lovely Kdrama is limited. At least I’ve been able to watch through Episode 8 and read all your comments.
I’ve a lot to say, and I promise I’ll get to it, because this show is worth it. YAMS is a satisfying mix of humor and pathos. Please be patient, and I’ll eventually get back to this thread; but here are some quick comments:
I love what the writer of this show has done with the characters and their dialogue. Some of the snarky banter reminds me of Jane Austen. And the character who gets some of the best lines isn’t even the female lead!
I was at first mildly annoyed by Ga Yeong’s shallow bitchiness, but by ep. 8 she has become a more rounded character. (Speaking of rounded: she was hilariously catty in ep. 1 as she said to Ms. Oh, the female staffer in the psychiatric clinic [our beloved Secretary Mo from TK:EM], “Wow. I can see you’ve been well. Look at those babies [gesturing in front of her chest]. Both top and bottom [gesturing by her hips].” Ms. Oh is not curvaceous.)
There’s something interesting I discovered about a scene shortly after this one in ep. 1. After GY has left and Dr. Ju comes back to his clinic, as soon as he walks in the door Ms. Oh tosses salt at him. It’s a Korean superstition. (https://journeys.dartmouth.edu/folklorearchive/tag/throwing-salt-on-husband/) Usually it is a wife throwing salt on her husband as he returns from attending a funeral, so he won’t bring evil spirits into the house. In this case, Ms. Oh’s action turns the superstition on its head: she’s throwing salt on the ex-husband to ward off the evil-spirited ex-wife.
I’m glad we see that GY is multi-dimensional, even though the perky face she shows others is a defensive mask. She’s needy, but there is strength in her. She presents herself as flighty, but demonstrates wisdom from time to time. She’s no dummy. And kudos to the actress who plays GY, Nam Gyuri, for her convincingly pained portrayal of someone in the grip of depression about to yield to suicidal thoughts. She threw all of it onto the screen: anger, fear, anguish, vulnerability, release.
I’m going to climb into bed and try to sleep, but let me leave you with this: I think the twins’ mom drugged (with the cold medicine) her less-favored son, the younger twin, and took him to the illegal adoption agency, but the boys later switched places. That’s why in the flashback when they meet again in Korea, one warns the other, don’t forget how far I’ve gone for you. They changed clothes and the older twin ended up being sent to the USA in his brother’s stead. We know they also changed clothes when the Korean twin was beaten by his father, then the USA twin went back in the house wearing the school uniform. Based on the look on his face when he saw his mother unconscious on the floor, I think that was the first time USA twin had seen her since going to Nanum Jeil Church. There was such a mix of emotions that crossed his face.
Another thing: the children’s drawings on the wall of the room the twin wakes up in at the church look like the drawing that was in DJ’s room in 1994. There was also a photo taken of children holding similar drawings in front of the church. (Ju, without a drawing, was in that photo.) I wonder if DJ spent some time doing activities at the church. I the church could have provided activities and events like the book giveaway to lure unsuspecting children (with or without their parents’ knowledge) for their illegal adoption business. Per Papago, the translation of the banner at the book giveaway read, We’ll give the children a heart-feeding meal. That’s purposefully misleading.
Must. Go. To. Sleep. If I keep at this, the sun will be up before I know it. Later, ‘gators!
The more I think about it (which means I’m not sleeping), the more I’m convinced that DJ did her drawing seen in 1994 at Nanum Jeil Church. Her family was so desperately poor that her mom couldn’t afford to buy food or Christmas presents, and used textbooks as kindling. I don’t think they could afford drawing paper and colored markers. It makes more sense that Stalker found DJ if he had reason to remember her, and a single head pat likely wouldn’t leave a lasting impression. But if they’d been in each other’s presence at the church’s activities, which culminated in the twin feeling so familiar with DJ that he risked stroking her hair, that makes more sense. Then the twins did their secret switch, and on another day DJ asked the other twin, not knowing he was a different person, why he’d patted her head, and he said it wasn’t him. Meanwhile, the twin who’d originally been abandoned at the orphanage and replaced by his brother was hiding under the Christmas tree and handed DJ her dropped chocolate bell. The twin that replaced him was then sent to the USA and became Ian Chase.
The twin that remained in South Korea, originally tricked and abandoned by his mother, had to deal with the guilt of his brother’s fate, which the twins might not have anticipated when they made their secret switch. The Korean twin had to live with the pressure of maintaining the falsehood that he was the one his mother had chosen to keep, knowing that he wasn’t. And he also had to live with an abusive father. I can imagine such pressures would warp a young person’s psyche.
Is that homeless person who got cracked in the head with a bottle by the other homeless man–probably the one involved in putting the suicide letter in the music box in the locker–the father of the twins? He complained about being tricked by 18-year-olds, and that was the age they were when USA twin changed into his brother’s school uniform and went back into the house.
I think Korean twin became Stalker. He found DJ. She represented something good in his bleak childhood. I believe it was Korean twin, Stalker, who was the 99 Building murderer and returned to the scene of the crime in Dr. Ju’s office. He might have especially hated Ju, remembering that Ju had a name when he did not, and Ju’s father came back for him unlike his own mother. Stalker was also jealous.of Ju over DJ. He was unhappy the night before when Ju interrupted them with talk of the water leak and wanting to go into DJ’s flat despite the late hour. The very next day Stalker came to Ju’s office to threaten him about liking Ms. Kang.
The twin that came to see Ju at his clinic only claimed to be from the USA. We hear the male staffer mention that the mystery patient did not supply a passport, so didn’t qualify for insurance coverage. He may not have supplied any formal ID, making up the name Chae Jun to maintain anonymity.
USA twin’s obsession with clean toothbrushes is understandable, as he did spend some time at Nanum Jeil Church in his brother’s place before being shipped off to the USA. He grew up in the same environment as his brother, receiving the same trainings as his brother, so likely would have been equally appalled at sharing toothbrushes. And as for the aggressive foot stepping? That may be something both twins learned from their abusive father.
@Welmaris, I hope you get enough sleep! You have a busy Saturday to prepare for.
While I’d have agreed that it should have been more plausible that Chae Jun could remember DJ if she’d spent time at the Nanum JC to draw etc, she herself says that, that Christmas, was the only time she ever went to that church, to get the books. So I don’t believe she spent time with Chae Jun or Jeong Min.
The drawings by the orphans showed their hopes of getting a family. One of them includes a dad, mum and child. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RQS_lIw_mTKu8rvrLFw1TgabWcZggjhz/view?usp=sharing
I did notice the drawing in DJ’s home too. DJ’s drawing expressly shows that her family is made up of only 3 persons. Dad is deliberately left out. The drawing is attached to the window. Instead of having a dad in her drawing, she’d look out that window, over to her neighbour’s home and stare at their dad. He made up for the missing dad in her drawing.

I too was originally quite annoyed by Ga Yeong’s diva attitude, but I decided to give her time/rope to improve or ‘hang herself’, because it became quickly obvious that she needs therapy. Now she still irritates me a little, but generally I find that she is not entirely self-serving, and she does give back. For instance she paid back to JDY what he paid for the pizzas, and she bought beer to replenish what she’d drunk at DJ’s home. She’s very fast on the uptake when it comes to Ju’s relationships, although she’s quite clueless about herself! I love how the background music changes to the sound of her brain gears moving as she puts 2-and-2 together. And the Wii game-style music that plays as her theme, also always gets me. She’s generally a pest, but quite harmless.
The twin switch was something our YAMS gang has also considered, once it became clear that switching attire was a normal thing for the brothers. I feel it’s highly likely.
I’m thinking that yes, the homeless guy who was just killed in Episode 8 is probably the one with the lesions on his hands (skin trouble?) who put the suicide note into the locker.
I’ve got half more of the Episode to go through. More later!
Wow @Welmaris, the twins switching is very possible! But who died and why? And who is the other masked guy?
@GB, very heartbreaking for the no/name kid. And the kid actor was also convincing and he played young Sigma in Sisyphus. I hope he does not get typecast as villain kid.
Btw, I almost typed the same thing – that this episode is about hugs and friendships. And did anyone notice that DJ changed her favorite flower to magnolia? Hmmm… JD’s influence for sure!
@Cleo – thanks for the screen shot and breakdown of the final scene in Ep8. I will relook at the prior episodes’ final scenes. So far, ep7 and 8 have been very memorable.
I’m so sad this show is airing during olympics and getting such low viewer ratings. Besides the fact that the acting, writing, and directing are all amazing, I feel the viewers can learn a lot on how to treat people by watching.
I’ve nothing consequential to add to your comments on episode 8 besides my agreement. Except
•I’ve always enjoyed GY from her first “hello” ha!
•did the mom send the wrong twin in the first place? Something about him pointing to the brother when she gave him the medicine. I took it as either 1. She had them confused or 2. He knew she didn’t care enough about him to know his preferences
• why is the other male sitting in the chair in the last shot standing out to me?? He’s also dressed similarly to Ian chase. You can see him in the shot @welmaris posted.
And the comparison to the dialogue reminding them of Jane Austen is spot on. I’m also so pleased with the way this writer is depicting the males- Their friendship, openness, vulnerability, strength (ha!), hugging. All of it. I usually gravitate towards an alpha male but all of this just seems to be such a palate cleanser of healthy behavior all around. Well except for the psycho/sociopath obviously
@Birdie – I found GY annoying at first but getting to know her now, Im getting used to her. There’s something about her that YD was compelled to marry her in order to save her. And you can see her growing bit by bit (and growing on me, too!). I hope both she and Patrick get into the match making show. Then fans can see how good they can be together and that will herald their dating out in public while giving good publicity to the show!
Interpretations
What a hug means, seems clearer without words. However we hear the words of DJ’s story that gets read out on air during Ju’s radio show.
“I’m actually very timid. I’m afraid I might see a ghost while taking a shower, so whenever I wash my hair, I listen to very loud and ridiculous music such as ‘Jump, Jump’. Such songs should cast away ghosts. (JYD remembers that he’d heard her loud music. Now he can interpret correctly, the reason why.)
But lately I’ve been able to wash my hair without any music. I think it started when I befriended my downstairs neighbour. I know that he’ll be the one to come to my rescue when I need it.
(Ju remembers how DJ had said: “When you hear my footsteps, you know that I’m home. And if I step on a bar of soap and fall with a big thud, you would be the first to rush to the rooftop to check if I was okay.” He realises that she trusts him and looks to him for help.)
When I had undergone something unbelievable or striven to hold back my tears, he was always there for me. (And now the voice changes to DJ’s voice and we see DJ sitting opposite Ju… or at least he imagines her speaking to him.)
But never once did he rush me saying, ‘Don’t cry, or you can do it, or get up.’ I think that’s when I started interpreting his words differently. I also did that when he called me a rabbit with bloodshot eyes.
(We see the flashback to them arguing about which car to drive to Gangneung. Ju had said “You look like a chatty rabbit with your bloodshot eyes.” “Silence can be uncomfortable sometimes, but you don’t always have to take responsibility for it.” “But you merely fell. You were rushing to not keep your friend waiting.’ Ju had correctly interpreted her flustered words, defensiveness, chagrin and made her feel better.)
It always sounded like he was telling me that everything was okay. ‘It’s okay. I’ll be right by your side. Everything will be all right.’
Then I started misinterpreting his words even more. Every time he spoke, it sounded like this.
‘I like you.’
‘I like you.’
‘I like you.’
‘I like you.’ (Ju has to re-interpret his own words now in the light of what DJ is saying.)
Is it crazy to like someone if you can’t promise to be with them forever? I can’t even take a bite of the cookie he gave me. And he can’t even throw away the forsythia twig I gave him. Do you think we can become friends?” The producer reads out that this was from Rooftop Rabbit. It sounds like a challenge to poor JDY and the listeners are quick to judge and condemn.
The interpretation of the listeners based on insufficient data
-The consensus of listeners is that he’s a fool to think he can be friends.
-Reactionary comments… from Username 3935: “What a lunatic. He shouldn’t have told her about his feelings then.”
– Variety Hamster (LOL I’m guessing this is from Ha Neul) : “The woman who sent the story seems thoughtful and nice. If I were him, I’d definitely date her even if she misinterpreted all of my words.”
Username Fairy Whatever says (I’m guessing this is Ga Yeong??) : “Maybe he urgently pushed her away after seeing her naked face. I’m speaking from experience. Sob.”
Ju is quick to interject : “That’s not true.”…Seeing that the radio producers look startled at his knowing what the man’s intentions are, he adds lamely: “It’s probably not true.”
Username Marble (Eun Ha?) and Round and Round (Cheol Do?) are arguing :
Marble : “When he offered to be friends, he pretty much told her to get lost.”
Round and Round : “No. He just wants to be by her side at all costs.”
Marble : “No. It means he’ll chop her hand off if she crosses the line.” (The repeated image of the hand that reaches out. We recall that DJ had recklessly made a bet on her arm and everything she owned and lost… so the hand belongs to JDY anyway!)
Round and Round : “No. He wants her to be within his arm’s reach.” (I believe this is Cheol Do and he is right.)
(However JDY also read some 300 judgemental comments that felt like 300 punches to his face.)
Producer : What do you think, Mr Ju?
Ju : “I think he asked her to be friends because he was afraid of hurting her. I think he wanted her to go somewhere safe. (We see that DJ is listening this time, ie she didn’t put the speaker into the fridge.)
But now that I think about it, that could have been right as well. – That he just wants to be by her side.”
(DJ leans against the fridge and covers her mouth to stem the emotions.)
Ju : “He might have failed to realise his true feelings.”
(DJ slides down and crouches on the floor with sighs and sobs. Ju had made a 2nd confession over the air.)
Later on, Ju meets up with DJ. DJ admits that the listeners do not know the full story, and that was why they mocked him. She also responds to his confession with her own. (Maybe more on this later.)
We return to perception, and misinterpretation, this time based on only partial information. Gently, this Show asks, how can we judge, when we only know from 1 point of view and without sufficient data. This theme, I feel, extends to how those with mental health issues are judged as well: how often they are misinterpreted and judged incorrectly.
How ironic that hugs without words are interpreted so much better, compared to the words heard out of context.
DJ’s Not-a-Confession, Confession
After the radio show, DJ admits to Ju that unlike the listeners who misjudged him, she knows everything.
DJ : “I know how hard it was for you to say that to me. (IE when he confessed that he liked her but that they should be friends because of his uncertain health)
‘I don’t want to be friends.’ I won’t say that. ‘I’ve also come to like you.’ I won’t say that either. At least not right now. We don’t need to promise to be together forever. I don’t know and will never know what ‘forever’ really means anyway. In a two-hour movie, ‘forever’ means two hours. I think that’s enough.”
I guess she’s saying she’s okay about being in a relationship with him, that for want of a better word, they’ll call friendship. In the fact that they will not need to promise to be together forever … is actually a promise. She’s willing to spend time together with him for as long as it lasts. Everything is relative. Two hours, or twenty years might both be equal to forever.
Thank you @GB for the transcript! One of my favorite scenes and it’s quite lovely to read it.
Yes @GB! Whereas I would expect some dramas to have DJ meet Ju at the playground and kind of pile on with “see? You did that wrong and everyone thinks so” instead she was first to apologize and point out that the data presented to the listeners was insufficient.
I love how you phrased that the show is gently showing us how judgments should and should not be made. I think that’s why I’m enjoying this so much—It’s not being too preachy to the viewers and these problems lead to situations people can actually face and maybe handle a bit differently after seeing this play out. (Yes, the thriller/twin/orphan plot line is far fetched but it’s neither stupid nor too ridiculously complicated)
It’s also not stupid humor, or at least not to me. And it’s not too “Korean” in that a lot of time I miss out on the majority of the humor because it’s based on wordplay that gets lost in translation.
The writer and director are treating us like adults with brains who enjoy wit and an interesting plot that doesn’t break your brain trying to figure out.
@GB, I’m so thankful you’re transcribing these conversations and @cleo and @welmaris, I understand your busy schedules but love hearing your interpretations on the directors point and cinematography. I can’t help but wonder what @pm3 would be pointing out and focusing on. Hopefully she’ll come back from vacation ready to dive into YAMS. Here’s 🍪🍪🍪🍪 for all.

Chase and DJ and #1
Chase drives back to the hotel to meet his colleagues and little Aiden runs into him with his ice-cream. Like before, Chase is perfectly nice and friendly with the child. He meets DJ who is baby-sitting Aiden and buys them both ice-cream.
As usual with DJ, she cannot bear the long silence and stare of people like Chase, and ends up filling it by saying a lot more than intended (even revealing her personal stuff) and in this case, allowing that she will accept a vanilla ice-cream.
The ice-cream seller admires the 3 of them as if they are Chase’s family. This seems to put an idea into his head. He stares at DJ with a look of consideration.
DJ is concerned that he left the hotel because of her. He says no and not to worry, so she uses his same words to him.
DJ : “It bothers me that you’re telling me not to worry.”
Chase laughs : “You have a good memory. I’ll be staying in Korea for a while, so I found my own place.”
Chase is surprised that DJ has shortened Aiden’s name to ‘Den-ah’. With children it is usual to use the diminutive form of the name. (Maybe this gives Chase greater pause, since he had no name. Here the child has more than one version to his name. Perhaps Chase might consider another version of the name, Choi Jeong Min?)
DJ goes through a list of diminutives to various names but finds that ‘Ian’ cannot be shortened, and is a bit apologetic about it. Aiden asks : “Ian? Is that your name?” And the cheeky kids suggests that Dr Chase used to wet his pants, LOL.
Towards the end of the episode, DJ gets a call from Chase to meet at the café downstairs. He is following up on the thought that the ice-cream seller had put into his head. Perhaps he was about to ask DJ if they could be friends.
While Chase sits at the café to wait, the spoilt brat girl-half of the annoying couple, comes along behind him and covers his eyes, saying to guess who. She’s aghast that she mistook him for her boyfriend, based on the colour of their jackets. Typically, she blames her boyfriend for her own error: “I touched a stranger because of you.”
She goes off to wash her hands, as if she’d touched filth. Chase stares at this exchange unblinkingly. It was strangely again a case of mistaken identity, but not compared to his twin who looked exactly like him, but rather compared to a stranger who looked very different from him, except for how he was dressed. The idea again of switching attire to trick a person has been raised.
Chase gets up to get his drink and order a second one, while outside DJ walks up to the café, passing a man with a black hat. By the time Chase returns to his table, a paper rose has been placed on it. It stops him in his tracks and he scans the room looking for the person who left it, who is presumably the person he spoke of, to his lawyer.
The paper rose falls to the ground. He picks it up and as he holds it, DJ stops in horror at the sight of him and the rose. Chase looks up, sees her and smiles, but she is lost in her memories.
She remembers Chae Jun asking her if she’d accept his rose. “It’s a paper rose. It won’t wither, it’s not prickly, and it’s recyclable.” She recalls how she unfolded the white paper rose to find the locker number written in it. And then she recalls the suicide note. She takes a step backwards in recoil.
JDY who is behind her stops her and turns her around to face him with a hand on her arm. Chase’s face hardens to see them, especially (I guess) because Ju has a hand on her arm. When DJ sees who is holding on to her, she clutches Ju’s arm for support. Chase stares most frighteningly at this tableau.
If a streak of sociopathy has been kept in check by Chase, the stress of what’s going on with his patient Ma Jae Guk, and now over DJ, might bring it to the fore again. On the other hand we are treated to information on the Munchausen Syndrome, where the illness is to do with being a fake, or faking illness. Show leaves us always in some doubt.
Re-interpretation of the original paper rose scene.
Yup, this show is reminding us constantly to re-consider our judgment and to re-interpret in the light of new information. Just as in the case of switching attire and mistaking a person, how about when another paper rose made its appearance? Chae Jun’s paper rose of choice would have been one made from coloured craft paper. The one left behind for DJ had been very different.
That time before Chae Jun’s suicide: DJ had seen Chae Jun doing something with her phone (I’m wondering if there’s a tracking device in it!) so she had not returned to her seat but had stayed a long time in the rest room. When she returned to the table, CJ had left. Instead there had been a red pen and a white paper napkin rose on the table. It had been twisted in the same way as the one we see now in Chase’s hands.
Since we now see that Chase gets the same kind of rose, then (either in his split personality he left himself a rose and forgot! or more likely,) #1 had left that rose for him, and therefore in the same way, #1 could/would have been the one to leave the rose for DJ. I was mistaken in thinking CJ had left that white rose as a farewell for DJ.
We may not have remarked on this before because CJ was always a bit weird, but it was strange that Chae Jun should have left the table without a word. He’d have wanted to give the rose to DJ himself, seeing as how he had practically stalked her. Might it have been that he’d been called/taken away by #1?
In the light of all this, #1 must have been playing a long game. He has been either long acquainted with, or was manipulating CJ. He knew about the music box and the history of Nanum JC. He was likely the one who tipped off the police about the suicide. However, he seems to have not known about an identical twin. He pinned his killings on CJ/Jeong Min, only to find that another Jeong Min popped up in Korea. He seems to be the real psychopath, who is now extending his game to the other twin.
You’re welcome @birdie and @Janey. It’s a real pleasure with this Show. There’s so much to think about with many little things that the Show gives us sight of. I know I’m still missing out a lot, so the comments of all here are invaluable to fill in the gaps.
I didn’t plan on watching this drama but since it is on BOD so I gave it a shot and I am sucked into it.
My first time watching this ML and oh his voice is so mesmerising. Whenever he goes oh dear, it warms me up. At the beginning of episode 8 when he did the voice over, it is on point, it brings out the helplessness of a child, the resignation of a person who knows his limited life span yet longing for acceptance.
GY is another character who left an impression on me. It’s her voice again, every time she goes “Hello? Hello?” It makes me laugh, it is a simple Hello but mouthed by GY is says “Don’t you who am I?” Or “Do you know what you are doing?” I think she uses these tactics to protect herself. And I love the scene when JYD exposed her suicide attempt, her cries are cries for help. Despite her wealth and fame she is in deep pain.
Another scene that left an impression was when GY ask DJ if she has any questions about her marriage and divorce with JYD, DJ ask if GY is feeling ok now. So touched, that must be the point when GY decided that she must have DJ as a friend, someone who cares.
Hi @Feifei, I’m glad to know you’re enjoying this as much as we are. I really liked the ML, Kim Dong Wook in the scary, dark “The Guest”. He made me feel so much for his character. Although I’ve watched Nam Gyuri in several shows before, I find that this one is by far her meatiest and best role. She’s doing superbly here, making us feel all kinds of emotions over her character, but still wanting to forgive her, her tiresome diva attitude.
@Janey what you say here:
Sounds like such a great idea! Seong Won gets lauded for a good reality show (for a change?), Patrick and GY will be happy, GY will no longer need to check on her well being with JDY or to keep running to DJ for friendship, so they’ll be happy too. Everybody wins!!
@birdie the man sitting in that last scene is the boy-half of the annoying couple. It’s because he’s dressed similar to Chase that his gf mistook Chase for him. He’s sitting, waiting for the gf to wash her hands and return.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tIsnYLcsO6jvCIYz21gMcppForTqlWvl/view?usp=sharing
As @Cleo also mentioned above, the more important set up of that scene is that the screen is divided into 5+ sectors and Ju and DJ are in the same sector and they are joined together by DJ holding on to Ju’s arm, while Chase is 3 sectors away, with 3 dividing lines separating him from them. I find that he looks kind of lonely standing there staring at them.
Show has done a great job bringing on the pathos for the one who would in most other shows, have been the one-note villain, without any redeeming qualities. In this show, we are no longer even convinced that he’s a villain. He seems to have been mainly a victim. I’m kind of scared of Chase but I feel sad for him as well. I want him to overcome his trauma and to no longer have those nightmares of being helplessly trapped under water.
Now he’s facing an additional trap that has been set by Ma Jae Guk’s Vice Chairwoman. I’m actually feeling sorry for Chase.
@Cleo, I too have been looking at that #1 or killer and I agree that he looks too young to be Hong SG. Maybe he’s a young brother or son of HSG who’s wreaking revenge?
Hello @feifei, welcome 🙂
I’m glad if many more people come here to discuss.
Like @birdie007 said, I’m also sad that this drama has low percentage on viewer rating because this is one of the best drama in 2021 I think..
To @Welmaris: why you can’t sleep? I hope you’re alright.. I’ve had this trouble sleeping before, and it made my blood pressure went up. So I bought some essential oil spray to help me getting sleepy and it worked.. Maybe it could work on you too.
I hope your event will be successful! Good luck for organizing and hosting them.. 🙂
@GB,
Woaw, I missed that heart on the bus. I’m glad that you catch this.
DJ is indeed knocking the door loudly on JYD’s heart. And it’s been opened by JYD. 😀 And thank you too for transcribing the important scenes..
I also think that there are many symbolism in this drama like @Cleo said. Hopefully when you’re not too busy, you could share to us what symbols did you find so far, dear @Cleo..
What I also like from this show is that the writer give each character a fair portion and meaning too. Like @Welmaris said about GY (I can’t agree more), and how @GB said about Patrick and Cheol Do (even though they are not the main casts, but I somehow see them equally). I originally not very fond of GY character. However, as I observe her more, I think I could tolerate her somehow and even waiting for her scenes too. Yes @birdie and @feifei, her “Hello..?!” is remarkable.
Yes, I’m also waiting for the scenes of:
– when DJ’s brother meet JYD 😀
– the progress of Haneul’s relationship with GY’s trainer friend
I’m a little bit confused with the timeline of when the twin actually got into Nanum Jeil Church. If this happened right after the mother gave one of them the cold medicine syrup (I assumed that the mother gave him the syrup to make him sleep), then it means that the first time the little Ian Chase got into Nanum Jeil was in 1992. We know that the adoption (when DJ met both of the twin, and when she saw that one of them in the car) happened in 1994. However, after the little Ian Chase wake up and meet HSG and KMJ, KMJ said “so one of them is leaving today”. What happened between 1992-1994.. Did Ian Chase meet his twin in 1994.. One of them was hiding when they take a picture in 1994 (the one when DJ also in the picture). Does it mean that the twin were in the same place, but KMJ and HSD didn’t know this.
And what happened in 2003, I am not sure why Hong Se Geun was doing in Jeongmin’s house. Did he become the “father” of Jeong Min, or he was just visiting. What relationship that HSG had with the twin’s mother..
@GB,
Regarding on who put the rose on the table, I also thought the same thing with you. The possibilities are:
a. The other “twin”, Ian Chase in his split personality (the one with no name), this also might be in line with The Third Twin theory like @Cleo had mentioned before.
b. #1 guy — do you think this could be HSG? (If HSG is still alive, the probability of this guy of having wanted to kill JeongMin is high, since what happened in 2003).
hahaa
ok I think we should see more next week..
have a great day everybody..
Ju Young Do and Chase
Their 1st meeting: it was likely at the Nanum JC nursing home/kids’ home. Chase had been angry that JYD had a name and a father who’d take him back. He’d refused to be friends.
2nd meeting?: DY had seen a boy washing off blood from his clothes. This was the time of Kim Myeong Ja’s murder. Since we are in the re-interpreting mode: we might guess that Chase or Jeong Min had stumbled upon or witnessed KMJ’s death. It’s strange that he should be washing his clothes in a public toilet rather than secretly at home. In other words, he had nothing to hide. He was in his underwear but without shame. JYD felt that the way the boy stared at him was the same as the way CJ had stared at him.
3rd meeting: They met at the building where the suicide took place and Chase refused to answer JYD’s questions.
4th meeting: They met at the police station and Chase, seeing that he’s a real doctor and a consultant for the police, is a little less icy towards him.
5th meeting: In Episode 8 they meet in the washroom (again?) and JYD sees that Chase is trying to wash off the ice-cream stain.
Ju is reminded of the boy who was washing off the bloodstains in 2003. Chase seems to stare unblinkingly without expression, as he tries to wipe the stain off.
Ju : “Long time no see, Dr Chase.”
We next see Chase in the corridor and his reflection in the wall makes it look as if there are 2 of him. (The suggestion of a multiple personality?)
Chase to Ju : “So this is where you work, Dr Ju Young Do? What is your question?”
Ju : “When I was young, I temporarily stayed at a nursing facility in Changbi-dong. And recently I saw a photo of me taken there.”
(Chase immediately seems uneasy as he looks down, while putting his right hand into his pocket. As sign of avoidance?)
Ju observes this but continues : “But that photo was a piece of evidence related to Choi Jeong Min’s case. Do you know anything about the photo or facility?”
Chase is still looking down, then he looks up to ‘attack’ : “Don’t beat about the bush.” (A delaying tactic because he does not want to answer.)
Ju : “I don’t believe I did.”
Chase : “Why did you assume I’d know anything about this case?”
Ju : “Do you not remember anything?”
Chase moves his hand that’s in his pocket and drops a pen. He picks it up. (A distraction.)
Chase : “Have you not heard that the case was closed?”
Ju : “I did.”
Chase shows displeasure when there is no reason to : “Then you should stop here. I don’t appreciate your rudeness or recklessness regarding your words.” (Finds fault with him to deflect.)
That meeting with Chase was a great case study, because we immediately are treated to another of JYD’s lectures and get to hear about Munchausen Syndrome.
‘Munchausen syndrome (factitious disorder imposed on self) is when someone tries to get attention and sympathy by falsifying, inducing, and/or exaggerating an illness.’ From https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/9833-munchausen-syndrome-factitious-disorder-imposed-on-self#:~:text=Munchausen%20syndrome%20(factitious%20disorder%20imposed%20on%20self)%20is%20when%20someone,themselves%20to%20get%20the%20symptoms.
JYD discusses the case of a nurse with the syndrome.
Ju : “They pretend to be sick in order to receive attention. Some harm themselves and even their own children or pets. During her childhood, her parents were too busy to give her any attention. Her sibling was ill as well. The only time her parents gave her attention was when she was sick.”
The patient was a nurse who knew how to fake the symptoms. The only way to know if patients are lying is to observe them and to focus on their displeasure.
(Ian Chase watches and listens to JYD covertly at the door.)
Ju : “Let’s say you asked a patient if they have taken a certain drug. If they didn’t take it, they’d say, ‘No, I didn’t’. Plain and simple. But if they’re worried about getting caught, it’s different. ‘Why are you suspecting me? I’m offended by your question.’ ” (This is the same method of deflection that Chase had just used with JYD).
Ian Chase walks away. I wonder if he realises that he’d revealed exactly that displeasure when Ju had asked him about Nanum JC. He’d taken issue with Ju’s rudeness instead of answering with a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
Ju continues : “If they’re clever, they lower their head, drop a pen, or try other means to distract you. (This also is what Chase had done.)
As a untrained person, all I can draw from this is that Chase did not want to talk about Nanum JC. He didn’t want to admit to remembering it . It was a past that he wanted buried because it was sordid, traumatic and it might have revealed crimes that he’d been forced to be party to. It suggests that just as Munchausen Syndrome patients fake their illnesses, Chase deep in his psyche, may have felt that he was a fake.
The Vice Chairwoman of the group under Ma Jae Guk had dug up a thick stack of information on Chase’s past. She was prepared to use it as blackmail together with bribery, to get him to get or let Ma Jae Guk die on the operating table. If Chase had been the real psychopath, she’d probably be next on his list of kills.
Her entrance into the game although fleeting suggests a new thought that I briefly mentioned above. Might she have been so ambitious that she’d manipulate/create evidence against Chase, so as to make use of it against him now. She admitted to have specially chosen him whom she could manipulate.
In the last scene, Chase sees a repeat of what he’d experienced as a child. Once again JYD is the one with the person Chase wanted to meet, and Chase is alone, just as JYD had, had his Dad come for him while Chase had been abandoned. The set up is that these 2 men could be rivals, but at the same time, JYD might be the one to help and to save Chase.
JYD might feel the same way about Chase, that he felt about CJ, and suggest that DJ stay away from him. It will be slightly easier this time, since she is already attached to JYD and Chase has left the hotel. However it will be likely that Chase will seek her out, and as usual, she will not be able to say no or to handle him. She attracts needy people like GY and now Chase as well. With her generous nature, she will once again end up giving too much. Let’s see if JYD can help.
I just popped in to say: Kalimera my agapimenes!
Welcome @feifei!
@Welmaris, I do hope you slept and rested a bit. Mostly likely you are anxious about the multi day event and you cannot sleep. I will agree with @moonstar512 about the essential oil!
@GB, as per usual you nailed it! If I had time I would transcript those scenes.
The one is important to me is also Ju’s voiceover about what an embrace means.
As for the killer, I think that your theory that he might be HGS’s son could be possible.
The thing is that Ian Chase is talking about that MAN, that means, maybe he doesn’t have a name either? If he doesn’t have a name, the third twin theory is on.
Your Munchausen Syndrome analysis, reveal a lot. Young Do KNEW that Ian Chase was there. His lecture has a double meaning. One for the nurses and other doctors to be careful with those people.
BUT also, it was a message to IAN CHASE directly that “I caught your lie. I know you are hiding something and I will find it.”
I wish I could write more, but I will return when I have more free time!
@Janey Hi! Are you okay lovely?
@birdie007 Here in B.O.D. we love those analyses. We are trying our best to decipher what the Writernim wants to say to the viewers.
In the meantime, we – the posters / commentantors make good use of our knowledge, skills and expertise to our answers and that makes B.O.D. experience a multi-cultural rainbow of different points of view!
@Moonstar512 This time around I don’t double watch the episodes as I did in #DAYS, I will try to write though down the symbolisms when I see them and I will return to add more when I will rewatch all the series in the end.
See ya all laters!
When names follow traditional Korean naming protocol, the first name is the surname inherited from the father, the second name (beginning of the given name) is a generational name (shared by all the children born into that family), and the third name (second half of the given name) is unique to each child, but combines with the surname and other half of the given name to create a meaningful phrase. Thinking of diminutive names given children that are plays on their full names, Chae Jun does sound too similar to Choi Jeong Min to be purely coincidental, don’t you agree @GB? When checking in to the psychology clinic as the mystery patient, Twin may have spontaneously come up with an alias that sounded like his real name. Or maybe it was something he’d been called as a child.
I keep going back to what we hear of the mystery patient’s check-in process at the clinic in ep. 1. The male staffer says, “If you don’t have a passport, too…” then continues speaking about his not qualifying for health insurance benefits. The patient did not show a passport. As for the “too,” I suspect that means the mystery patient did not show another form of identification. Posing as a citizen of the USA, he wouldn’t be expected to show his Korean ID from the national Resident Registration System. If he settled his bill with cash prior to seeing the doctor, the staffer would have no reason to pursue his lack of official identification, taking the patient’s word regarding name and nationality when writing up his patient chart.
That scene in ep. 8 where DJ gives examples of diminutive names is funny because of the names she chose as examples.
–Trick for Patrick. Probably a reference to GY’s boyfriend Patrick. But there was a 1978 horror film named Patrick that was remade in 2013 as Patrick: Evil Awakens. In the 1976 movie, per IMDb, a comatose hospital patient harasses and kills through his powers of telekinesis to claim his private nurse as his own. The 2013 Australian remake, also a supernatural horror film, had the same premise of a comatose young man who uses his psychic powers to stalk a nurse caring for him.
–Nibal for Hannibal. Hannibal Lecter is a brilliant, cannibalistic serial killer featured in books, movies and TV. Per Wikipedia: Before his capture, he was a respected forensic psychiatrist; after his incarceration, he is consulted by FBI agents…to help them find other serial killers.
–My for Amy. Amy was a 2013 horror film. Here’s the summary from IMDb: With the psychic power of clairvoyance…Amy starts witnessing haunting visions as her entire Amish village begins to fall into demonic control. An ominous funeral director, Christopher, uses Amy’s special abilities to seek out the covert leader behind the possession. Amy and Christopher must stop the fall of their village before the Devil takes over Amy’s soul-forcing them to perform a controversial exorcism.
–Mian for Damian. In the famous 1976 supernatural horror film The Omen–which went on to become a franchise of four movies–Damien is the name of the young boy who is the prophesied Antichrist. When their biological child dies shortly after birth, a husband replaces the child without his wife knowing. As that child grows, a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family.
–Tley for Bentley. Per Wikipedia, in the 2007 superhero film Ghost Rider, based on the Marvel character of the same name, actor Wes Bentley played the antagonist of the story: Blackheart/Legion, the son of Mephisto, who wants to use the Contract of San Venganza in order to unleash Hell on Earth.
I’d say these are all Easter eggs! We’ve got stalking of a caregiving woman, a serial killer (a forensic psychiatrist, no less) who somewhat reforms by helping catch other serial killers, a woman who sees haunting visions and battles demonic possession (some people equate mental illness with demonic possession), a child who replaced another and is evil incarnate, and someone who wants to unleash Hell on Earth.
The ice cream scene by the playground gave us another clue about Dr. Chase: his plans have deviated from his original purpose for having come to South Korea. He tells DJ he left the hotel and got his own place because he’ll be staying in Korea awhile. His colleagues remained at the hotel, so the implication is that they won’t be staying as long as Ian; they will remain only as long as needed to treat the chaebol patient they came to treat. What happened to Ian to make him change his plans? I think it was his meeting DJ. He said that following his dead twin’s trail led him to her.
We see from flashbacks that the twins reconnected in Korea at least by their teens. I believe Ian was acting when he appeared ignorant of someone having lived in South Korea who looked just like him, and for whom others could easily mistake him. Why would he hide this? I believe he knew there was something in the twins’ history–involving one, the other, or both–that he wanted to remain hidden. Was it the fight in the family home during which his father received a wound that might have killed him? Was it Ian who’d stabbed the woman who’d worked at the illegal adoption business?
I appears someone either in South Korea or the USA has done a lot of background research on Ian, knows he’s a twin, and knows people from his childhood have died. We learn this during the conversation of the vice chairman (daughter of the man to receive brain surgery by the USA team) with Ian Chase:
VC: Death is closer than you think, isn’t it? Out of the blue, your twin brother commits suicide. And people from your childhood are mysteriously dying left and right. And patients often die on the operating table. “We did our best, but we couldn’t save him.” That’s what the doctors will say. But for someone like me who’s last in line to be the heir, his death wouldn’t come as a shock. There will be no investigation or autopsy.
Ian: Are you telling me to hinder the surgery?
VC: Didn’t you find it odd when you were chosen for this team? Dr. Bale is a racist, so it couldn’t have been him that chose an Asian like you. So who assigned you to this team, and why? Did you ever wonder?
Ian: Please just cut to the chase.
VC: Tell me what you want. I don’t do business with someone who has nothing to lose nor desire.
Ian: I don’t have any.
VC: I’m sure you do. (She gives him a large, thick envelope.) Any mistakes you’ve made in life out of desperation or mere fun…always leave a stain. (She looks at the ice cream stain on his jacket.)
In ep. 7 when the police and Dr. Ju are in Detective Park’s hospital room discussing the photo containing Ju and one of the twins taken at Nanum Jeil Prayer House, Ju says, “In his suicide note, there was no motive for killing Kim Myeong Ja.” Detective Ko responds, “Right. That’s why we thought it was a thrill kill.” I thought of this when the Vice Chairman said to Ian, “Any mistakes you’ve made in life out of desperation or mere fun…” It sounds like VC’s informants can get inside information from the police department. And if that’s the case, she knew before the police that Ian is connected to Nanum Jeil Church.
In the next scene, Dr. Ju is in the hospital bathroom, washing his hands, when Ian enters. Ian, clearly distracted by his thoughts, makes a desultory effort to clean the ice cream stain from his jacket. We see the flashback to the youth in his underwear in a public restroom trying to wash bloodstains from his clothing. We don’t know if we’re seeing Dr. Ju’s memory, as was the case when we first saw this flashback, or Ian’s. In the next scene, outside the bathroom, we see Ian standing and his image is reflected by a mirror-like wall, as if he’s facing his twin. He’s actually facing Dr. Ju, who’s obscured by the wall. We see both of them having a conversation, in which Ju asks Ian about a nursing facility in Changbi-dong, and about a photo taken there that is a piece of evidence in Choi Jeong Min’s case. Ian is defensive in his response. “Why did you assume I’d know anything about his case? (He doesn’t answer yes or no to Ju’s question.) He drops a pen out of his pocket, then diverts the conversation again, failing to answer the question. “Have you not heard that the case was closed?…Then you should stop here. I don’t appreciate your rudeness or recklessness regarding your words.” [This makes me think of the adage: The best defense is an offense.]
Dr. Ju is aware that Ian is avoiding his question, even to the point of lying. First, Ian was looking him straight in the eye. Ju has said a liar will look at someone to gauge whether or not the other person is believing the lie. Also, after their conversation as Ju teaches a class at the hospital about Munchausen’s syndrome, he says, “The only way to know if patients are lying is to observe them. Especially, when you deal with patients who must fool doctors and nurses (we see Ian is observing the lecture through a partially-open door), you should focus on their displeasure. Let’s say you asked a patient if they had taken a certain drug. If they didn’t take it, they’d say ‘No, I didn’t.’ Plain and simple. But if they’re worried about getting caught, it’s different. ‘Why are you suspecting me? I’m offended by your question.’ (Ian leaves; Ju notices him leaving.) If they’re clever, they lower their head, drop a pen, or try other means to distract you.”
Ju knows he’s caught Ian lying about Nanum Jeil Church.
Because @Packmule3 is on vacation and has limited access to email, I’m going to break into smaller chunks the notes I emailed her and post them in the first open thread for YAMS. I’m not sure how useful they’ll be this far into the series, but since Episode 1 sets the tone and lays the foundation for the entire drama, I could possibly have uncovered some hints with my close look.
@GB, @Moonstar512, and @Cleopatra, thanks for your concern about my sleeplessness. It was because of racing brain. My working on Saturday’s event has kicked it into high gear. By this point I’ve gotten out a bunch of emails that were time sensitive, and now wait for responses, so I have time tonight to spend with YAMS.
@Welmaris, @moonstar, you’ve brought up good questions. I was wondering about Hong SG being in that house and throwing things at Chae Jun too. And now the question of what happened in 1992 – 1994.
That’s great @Welmaris, we’ve hit on some of the same points. Thanks for transcribing the dialogue with Vice Chairwoman.
Yes, Chae Jun does sound like a shortened version of Choi Jeong Min. LOL trust you to catch on the names of all the kids/characters that come from horror movies. Many Easter eggs indeed!
I feel that even if Chase had gotten a place of his own to stay longer because of DJ, the other reason was that he was trying to meet the mystery guy that he and the lawyer mentioned. It might have been better to meet in a less public place than a hotel.
Can anyone figure out how the switch of twins could have made sense? If the Chase we have currently recalls the time in NJC orphanage where he must have stayed for around 2 years (1992-1994), then he was the boy in the black jacket in the car that left at Christmas 1994. We know that one twin was always in hiding, therefore the adults did not know that the 2nd twin was also present.
If the 2nd twin was living with his mother, why was there a switch? Chase was the one from the orphanage, and he did not end up living at home with his mother if he switched places. But if Chase is the twin who lived with his mother, then switched and went to the US, then why is it that he’s the one who has the memories of the orphanage? Do you see what I mean? What was the point of switching, if it meant that the one who lived at home would end up in the orphanage or overseas? It makes more sense if there was no switch. IE Chase who was in the orphanage really did go to the US and is now back.
A more confusing alternative: could they have switched more than once? When it came to the time for one twin to be sent to the US, Chase took the place of his younger brother.
I recall that before the homeless man had been hit on the head with a bottle, he’d said something about an 18-year old who had tricked him.
There’s a scene with 2 men. One is a homeless man, drinking from a bottle and a man in a hat sits opposite him. The man who has a bottle says “If it’s true that I was duped, that means I was fooled by an 18-year old. That is unacceptable.”
The man with a hat stands up. His breath is shuddering, as if he’s upset. He takes the bottle that the other man has just emptied.
He speaks in a higher pitched voice : “Why are you so impudent? I’m talking to you.” He smashes the bottle on the head of the other man and walks off with a bag.
(My guess is that the hatted man had told the homeless man that he’d been tricked by an 18-year old. The hatted man had then taken issue with the homeless man for not accepting his word. The homeless man was only injured so far, therefore we hope that Det Ko will be able to get info from him.)
We may also recall that in Episode 7, the detectives had been discussing the CCTV footage of Chase before Det Park’s stabbing.
JYD points out on the CCTV footage : “From here, it’s Det Park’s point of view. But when he goes outside, he looks back at where he stood from the other side. And from here, (18:13 on the footage) he moves away from Det Park.” (At the bottom of the screen it shows 21-03-06)
Ko : “So you’re saying that Chase already knew that someone else was following him. But he never told us that.”
Chase is hiding the fact that he is waiting to meet someone, that he knows he’s being followed, and that he remembers the NJC orphanage. He might have been the 18-year old who had fooled the homeless man. A switch of twins would qualify as a trick that could fool anyone.
So our question remains: Is this injured man the same one who put the suicide note into the locker. Who is the hatted man who now makes regular appearances in Ep 8?
Anyway, I’m just putting this here before I forget.
@Cleo
You wanted the meaning of hugs as taken from the Episode 8? Here are my notes.
DJ returns to Ju’s home and knocks loudly on his door. She walks up to hug him when he opens the door to her. A sweet motif of him opening up his heart to receive her embrace.
We hear his voiceover on hugs:
“I knew the reason for your tears and your embrace. ‘I felt so bad for you that I couldn’t just leave you behind. That night you embraced the 11-year old me who had lost his brother, the 26-year old me who had lost his patient, and the foolish me who dared to lose you because I was scared to hurt you.”
What DJ had given to GY in words, she gave Ju in a hug.
Next morning, Ju wakes up Ha Neul who’d stayed over to watch over him. He checks his temperature which is normal and now Ha Neul wants to hug him. He suffers himself to be hugged he thinks : “Embracing and warming someone’s body with your temperature (warmth of your body) is a more sincere act of affection than mere words.”
We are shown a collage of people hugging each other. These are all the things those hugs say:
Young woman runs to a man at the Arrivals Hall of an airport : It means: “I’ve missed you so much.”
A young child runs with a welcome home poster to her dad : “What took you so long.”
A man runs to his dog : “I was so worried about you.”
(We see that Patrick has come back quietly by himself, masked and rolling his luggage along.)
A white-haired couple where the man has a bunch of flowers :”I was lonely without you.” (Patrick eyes them pensively as he passes them in a car.)
A soldier runs to his girlfriend : “I almost went crazy pining for you.” (Patrick watches longingly).
Patrick drives back to his underground carpark. GY horns at him, comes out of her car with a smile and stands there with arms outstretched ‘expecting/demanding’ a hug LOL. That entitled brat! She does not actually give the hug, but waits for it like a queen expecting homage to be paid to her. Patrick runs to her and hugs her tightly.
That hug said : “I’m sorry. It’s OK. Thank you.” GY strokes Patrick’s head and he swivels with her in his arms.
DJ’s Mum is on a scooter, feeling the hug of the pink helmet over her head. She pats it with a smile.
When Ju Young Do Was Naughty and Lost His Buttons
DJ breaks a few plates in her apartment which causes a ruckus enough to bring Ju up to check on her. It’s his turn to knock on her door. She lets him in. They tidy the house together.
They are shot in separate frames or with the divider between them, until Ju finds the cookies he gave her on the table, nicely put to bed together under a ‘blanket’ (by GY). LOL. He asks about the cookies.
DJ rushes over to the table, entering the same frame with Ju, to protest that it was GY who did it and that she’d left “I’ll be back” memos everywhere. She thinks there’ll be a sample memo with the cookies to prove what she is saying, so she whips off the ‘blanket’ to find to her intense embarrassment, that the bears had been named Kang Da Jeong and Ju Young Do. As they are in the same frame, it means that Ju understands perfectly the situation from DJ’s point of view, but he teases her by not saying so.
Ju just smiles and says he’ll leave as DJ continues to be flustered. “Do you not believe me?”
Ju wickedly remains mum as he leaves so DJ goes after him to clear the misunderstanding. She asks Ju to call GY to ask her. She tells him that she had put the cookies into the freezer. “They were ice cold.” He smiles, pretending to not believe her and tries to leave, but she grabs his shirt and buttons get ripped off so that the top of his shirt is open.
LOL the change in the music. My only comment on this part is that his chest did not show any scar from the heart surgery as far as I could see (ahem… yes I looked… to verify, you know.)
Ju is stunned to be suddenly exposing his chest and runs down only to be confronted with Nurse Oh who’s snacking outside the clinic. She drops her snacks when she sees his half unbuttoned shirt. He runs past Ari and Cheol Do to his car. LOL with slinky trumpet music all the way. Even Cheol Do covers his chest.
Why was Ju being naughty? Because if he’d just assured DJ from the beginning that he knew and believed her, and that there had been no misunderstanding about those cookies in bed with each other, he’d not have lost his buttons or caused more misunderstanding by going around hiding his exposed chest. LOL. He was getting what he deserved.
In DJ’s long text to Ju detailing her protestations of innocence, she says:”I felt bad about ruining what she had made. (The cookies in bed set up). … I’m not sure if it’s only the buttons or if I ripped your shirt as well, but …In any case, I promise to buy you a new shirt. If you think I put it there for you to see, that’s really not… If you no longer misunderstand me, please wave a carrot so I’d know. If you don’t have any at home, a cucumber or an eggplant will do.”
He sends her a message that we don’t get to see but it makes her smile in relief. She relaxes in her bed and then she covers her face, laughing. (I think it was a photo of Ju waving a vegetable LOL.)
The next day, we see that DJ does the same thing to her colleague Yoo Kyung. YK mentions a kissing academy in either Dallas or Wisconsin.
“They teach people who were dumped for being bad kissers, how to kiss. They even get to practice.” DJ teases her that she must have gone to that academy, and deliberately pretends to misunderstand and disbelieve YK who protests that she’d really never been to that academy. Poor YK chases after her. LOL.
Da Jeong’s Friends
I enjoyed the scene where Ga Yeong and Eun Ha challenged each other on how well they knew DJ based on a quiz of her favourite things. Unbeknownst to them, they would both get most answers wrong, because DJ had recently changed her preferences since falling in love with JYD.
Fave food: Dumplings versus Pizza (but DJ says it’s Rice Soup)
EH asks : “Why rice soup when your mum sells pizza?”
GY : “Exactly. You remind me of someone.” (I gather that JYD likes rice soup?)
Fave flower: Orange blossom vs Red Foxtail (DJ had changed her fave to Magnolias!! We know why.) Both EH and GY agree with each other that Magnolias are not flowers to be faves.
Fave song: Jump, Jump vs Patrick’s To You. (This time EH got it right.)
But when EH says she has “To You” as her phone ringback tone, DJ is forgotten. GY and EH bond over their love for Patrick. DJ finds herself ignored. So much for friendship both long and short!! LOL.
GY again wants to call EH Unnie, but since GY is still older, she decides to call EH ‘friend’, giving her a new name, she calls EH, ‘Galaxy Park’, and EH is tickled pink. Poor DJ is left out even of the ‘Cheers!’ as they drink their beer.
The whole sequence about hugging made me emotional because giving and receiving hugs was something lost during the pandemic. I didn’t get to hug my daughters for more than 18 months. I not only missed seeing them, but my arms ached to hold them. I loved that this show devoted a good chunk of screen time to the importance of hugging.
I disagree that CY was being a diva when she stood with arms open wide waiting for Patrick to come to her. CY went into hiding because she feared he was moving too fast, declaring his love, and she didn’t want him to get hurt (rejected by his fans) because of her. In Patrick’s meeting with Dr. Ju, he asked how he could reassure CY, and was advised to let her know he’d be okay giving her space and time. By welcoming Patrick to run to her and embrace her, CY was indicating.she was accepting his way of loving her: jumping in quickly and not holding back.
So many transcribe-worthy dialogues in Ep8. Thanks darling @GB!!! The meaning of the hugs – so sad YD did not mention his grief about his mom, I bet that hurt equally with the loss of his brother. I wonder if his mom is still alive, he mentioned his relationship with the dad.
You can see the way DJ is changing with YD in her life. Her preferences widen, I hope this extends to her way of thinking also and to take care of herself a bit more. The old and new friend competing for “closeness” points was funny.
Hello agapimeni @Cleo! I am doing well. I find YAMS better than DAYS – the absence of a deity makes this less confusing and more down to earth. We do have mystery and crime as story backdrops but I find the OTP transcends that. It’s like they pop out from the grimy/bloody mess so it’s easier for me to ignore that and can focus on just them
If I want. Off topic, I have to get back to Nevertheless thread, now that there’s a rival good guy! Hope you’re still watching it.
@Welmaris – I hope you’re able to recover you sleep hours. Great Easter egg finds! I also raised my eyebrow on mention of “Hannibal” in the shortening of nicknames. And added to the list of horror characters is Ian, with no nickname.
Thanks to the rest who have joined us in this show @birdie, @moonstar @Feifei!! Cheers!
So Hannibal who was a psychatrist and also a cannibal…
JYD, in addition to being a psychatrist, also received a heart from another person
Hahaha the parallels !
Packmule3, when you get a spare moment (I can dream, can’t I?) please open a new thread for YAMS 9-10. Thanks!
