Hwayugi (Korean Odyssey): Hong Sisters’ Tricks of the Trades

Some things never change in a Hong Sisters’ drama….

1. Remember this expression and the hand gesture for “Kkeojyeo!” from the drama “Master’s Sun”?

So Ji Sub’s “Get lost!” = Cha Seung Won’s “You pass!”

2. Flashback. The flashback at the beginning of Episode 2 wasn’t as clear as it could have been. The scene was meant to convey that SunMi lost her grandmother as her protector shortly after she was punished for helping OhGong escaped. In Episode 1, SunMi simply encountered ghosts. But in Episode 2, SunMi was ATTRACTING demons whenever she had wounds or cuts on her body. Her grandmother saved her from the tree demon who tried to abduct her, but her grandmother would turn out to be a ghost herself. She was wearing a white ribbon in her hair denoting a death in the family. Before leaving for the afterlife, her grandmother reassured her that somebody fated to protect her would soon come to her protection. And her words came true, when we see in the next scene, OhGong bandaging her deept cut on the wrist.

3. In the Master’s Sun, conflict arose between the heroine’s need to touch So Ji Sub’s character to dispel the ghosts, and SJS’s aversion to being manhandled. In this drama, the weakness of OhGong lies in his sense of smell. Everybody except for him can smell the lotus scent emanating from SunMi. Right now, the whiff of soju is more intoxicating than SunMi’s blood.

4. Bucket lists are important to Hong sisters. OhGong asked SunMi what she wanted to do before she died and she enumerated them. She wanted to eat with family, have a drink with a friend (or “some” relationship) and she wanted to go on a date with a boyfriend. I’m willing to bet that in the end, when SunMi is prepping for her death, this Bucket list will be remembered again. This time, OhGong would deeply regret coldly rushing her through her list-of-things-to-do-before-she died.

5. Contracts. SunMi actually made a contract with Mawang as well: his bull umbrella in exchange for the “Pretty Iron Fan.” According to wikipedia, the wife of the Bull King or Mawang possessed an Iron Fan which could tame mountain forest fires and create giant whirlwind.

6. SunMi rued her words here:

If my earlier assessment of OhGong’s character was correct, then I’m betting that OhGong was itching to tell him that he protected her all along. But he bit his tongue. Just like when she was attacked in the alley, it was OhGong who saved her. Not her umbrella, cellphone and CCTV.
