I just rewatched the first episode of Signal and gosh I was practically jumping out of my seat. The suspense/stress in the rewatch is so high. It’s still soooo good. I might only wish that the Year 2000 scenes are somewhat clearer and brighter, but otherwise, it still looks great.

  2. @GB, Yep!!! Excellent screenplay about trepidation, twists, obstacles and wooOwAowo!
    I’m at episode 9 currently. 😉
Would be a perfect drama without the horrible streched flashback images. The editor should go to jail, or banned on a desert island where he can’t anymore destroy dramas.

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I was thinking that the Signal distorted screens of the past might be a reflection of the distortion among the crime-solving forces who let so many cases become cold cases. The attitude of the police bosses who let perpetrators get away with crime in order to save their own skins, to suck up to bosses, because they were bribed, etc, plus the useless statute of limitations that benefitted criminals, warped what should be considered just and fair investigations for the victims and their families.

Hence we get a warped and distorted view of 2000 scenes.

  4. Excited for today and for our next re.Watch.

    Testing…..

    Hi All,
    RE: Signal Rewatch Schedule
Will you be okay with a 2-week break in the rewatch party in July?

I’ve got some ‘study’ to do at that time and will be away.
We will start Episode 1 next week and go on for 9 weeks until 29 June 2024.

I’m suggesting we take a 2-week break in the beginning of July, and then resume our Party with Episode 10 on 20 July 2024, and end with Episode 16 on 31 August 2024.

Let us know if you are aware when you’ll be away and we can factor in more breaks as well!

Here’s the link to the proposed Schedule in Google Drive. It’s still a draft and can be changed any time. Once it’s more or less settled, then I’ll give it to @packmule3 to put up as a notice for all the Signal threads. Let me know!! 😄🥳☺️

  7. Hopefully my not getting email notification of comments was an easy fix.

  8. Someone please write a comment here.So I can test out my possible fix. Thank you

  9. Hi MM and all🤗

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @LL and @MM. Are you getting this in email @MM?

  11. @LL Thank you. I just needed to click on something in the email. And it took me to wordpress and I did what I needed to there.

  12. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

So @MM and @LL, are you okay with the Signal Rewatch Schedule? Please wee comment with the link above. 🙂

  13. @GB Schedule is fine with me. I really don’t know what my plans are for this summer. I am not seeing much further than this coming tuesday when my daughter who has been living in japan for 5 years returns home probably to live with us for a while.

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Alrighty @MM, good to know. Hope your daughter has a nice long stay with you. She’s back from Japan for good?

I’m watching Signal now in preparation for next week and am so engrossed in it I may forget to come back here in time!!!

  15. Hi GB and MM.
It’s ok for a break in Signal

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @WE and thanks. I was wondering if any of you take summer vacations or something. I don’t, but can accommodate. I must say that we’re pretty consistent, every week!!

    OK we start about now!

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

After hours of rain, it’s finally dry and little Min Young witnesses SW dying. At last people come out but it’s too late.

Her mother asks about the teddy bear that MY was supposed to go get but MY says ‘He’s dead.’

  18. It’s Ok, I’ll be here during my vacations. 😉

    I started:
Bad start, there is a dead man.
So the child heroine knows for sure he’s dead!

  19. Hello, everyone. I have no plans to go away but am fine with breaks into between re-watches.

    Let’s go now!

  20. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

SW cannot look at his brother, Jung Woo. Glad he outgrew that phase.

  21. She is planning to stay with us for a year. We might draw up a cohabitation contract😁

Serendipitously, She now has a canadian korean boyfriend. Foreigner bars/cafes in japan are a hot bed for meeting people from around the world. So I am expecting plans to be tentative.

  22. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @FF! OK great about the breaks.

I’m at SW crying that his brother is going to jail. He gets a paging from his future boss.

  23. Now she’s looking at her little finger in the car.
SW doesn’t want to say goodbye to his brother.
Go to jail! out of my sight! 😀
    Well, he cries after……

  24. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Young SW is very clear about how smart he is LOL. Can be considered somewhat arrogant and he retains that attitude as an adult.

So future boss promises to take care of him. No wonder they have such a good rapport.

  25. Hi FF.

There is a reversing of the concept now. No time change is repercuted in the future. It restarts at this point of SW life. The future doesn’t exist yet.

  26. A series of scenes that set up a new timeline. MY going to America. Sw’s boss takes young SW under his wing. Young SW listens to advice from his oder self. His brother gets taken away by the polce.

  27. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, it’s telling that he listens to his future self’s message and then deletes it. He will make the fresh start of/to the future that seeing his future self assures him he will have.

  28. @GB I had the same thought about his arrogance. “Then I am perfect” He is right though.

  29. Its is so poignant that young SW receiving a message from a 20 years older SW and bidding him farewell.

  30. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, well it was his arrogance that got him into trouble actually… going back that last time may have set things right but he had messed it up first.

The next thing we see of him as an adult is as a reporter picking up a stray arm LOL. He needed a hand!

  31. Aish, he couldn’t take this damn arm in the first place? ^^

  32. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, yes, so poignant. The music so suitable too!

  33. It’s replaying first time he meets her.
We got a flashback of this scene already?

  34. He is still taking risks to intervene in a ?murder/accident.

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, this picking up the arm scene I always recall that I’ve seen it, but I forget that it was in Nine: 9.

So now he has to go for the staff party and that’s where he’ll meet Min Young.

  36. Banging the door in the face and ending at hospital is SJJ version of love at first sight. ^^

  37. Hi @WE, yeah I thought so too. Just pick up the arm in the first place!

Now they are repeating the scene where SW and MY first met.

  38. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes, this meeting at the karaoke is a merged timeline version of what we saw before. The same things happen but this time MY will gradually remember that she’d seen him before.

  39. @GB I was wondering why he deleted the message. yes a fresh start. I was thinking I would have kept it for reassurance.

  40. I like a lot the lines of this scene in hospital ER. Surprising, not what’s expected. 😉

  41. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, SJJ gives falling in love a new meaning – fall for the guy after being hit in the head LOL.

  42. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM I’d have kept the message out of nostalgia!

Here we see that Min Young is quite forward in finding out if SW has a girlfriend etc.

  43. @GB, oh yeah!!! She recognizes him as soon as in this car scene: the dead dude in the phone booth said “avoid any guy looking like me” !!!
+ FLASHBACK, to make it clear.
Perfect narration, but hey, it’s SJJ. 🙂

  44. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I feel it took some of his serious expressions as he spoke to get her to recognise him. It took her so many minutes.

  45. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, She does a panic-panic dash out of the car thing and then next day starts asking if he’s a pervert, criminal, rapist etc LOL. Just asking for trouble!

  46. As the situation is taken with logic, she ask the manager if he’s a man having problem with women, etc, and as a logical conclusion, he goes to see her angry.
Intimate scene in the office now.

  47. MY recognizes SW but forgot that he died? Does she not wonder why she is seeing a dead man?

  48. Goshhhhh, her lines are so absurd. Real comedy.

  49. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, so we see that although things change, the past has affected the present now that MY is acting weird and SW has gotten angry with her. They are never going to be indifferent towards each other now. Great set up by SJJ!

  50. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, guess it was 14 years ago and she cannot recall his face at first. She just thinks she’s seeing a doppelganger, I guess, not the dead man.

  51. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I really enjoy this episode. I watched scenes in it over and over again. Hilarious and a great resolution.

  52. When you can’t be indifferent to the problems a woman cause in your life, obviously, it’s THE one. 😀

  53. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE LOLOL the series of expressions on SW’s face as she tells him why she’s being so weird. He’s just catching no ball LOLOL.

  54. @GB, it’s a good confort episode, dispite the dramatic beggining! Lot of fresh and happy scenes.

  55. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I didn’t know whether to be aghast or entertained that MY was so man-hungry for SW. Loved the scene where he caught her trying to look at his chest!

  56. Haha SW pinning MY on the sofa is hilarious.

  57. @GB, naughty girl.. hey hey hey…….

  58. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, the best part is that the boss sees them and says they’re having fun LOL. Everyone knows that she has a crush on SW.

  59. SW is vindictive. Always teasing MY with her words.

  60. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, now that naughty girl is going to be teased all her years in CBM.

She does more naughty things by taking photos of him asleep on her shoulder without asking him for permission first!! She’s incorrigible!

  61. @GB, I like the way you described MY. Man-hungry she is and very.

  62. his exprssions are so funny when she s telling him she has fallen in love with him……. He has done nothing and she is already rejecting him

  63. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, Yes vindictive and he’s so good at pretending to be serious about avoiding her. But he’s such an arrogant jerk teasing her endlessly. And MY is such a naive girl, she believed that he was serious.

  64. @GB, she enters the mode “he’s MY man”.
Get out any other bitches, it’s MY man !!! 😀

Now hope for a kiss in the cinema. ^^

  65. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, and now she’s getting all dressed up to watch a movie with SW… and with the rest of the colleagues LOL. Poor girl is so decked out, so teased and so humiliated.

  66. She ask for a deep kiss on the phone, in front of the people of the airport. 🙂

Next, the remake of a scene we already saw. With Brother.

  67. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, I love all of their scenes in this episode. Can’t sto chortling.

  68. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE 2011 means they’ve been working together for 4 years. She just announces that she’s coming to see him in New York. He pretends to be annoyed.

  69. Ready to kiss in this room.
It’s not something I often care about, but here, I find the scene written from a woman perspective. First, man has the power. Guess what: I’ve a scene like that from man perspective, and of course it’s the “femme fatale” getting the power first. 😀

  70. He kissed her eventually!

  71. He is at his jerkiest. Scene in the work vehicle.

It feels to me that he is channelling Park Hyung Sik really well here or I am inclined to see it that way.

  72. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE we finally come to the time when SW meets his brother before Christmas 2012. This time it’s different. JW stays to eat and they can chat about SW’s girl. JW does not tell him that he has the incense sticks, but he’s still going to Nepal to change the past.

Ah, at least JW recognises SW as the man from before.

  73. @MM, when a woman write a kdrama, man is a jerk, and when a man write a kdrama, woman is a bitch. 😀
Just my basic constatation in disbelief. Oo!!!
    😀

  74. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, in this case the girl set the stage after years of chasing the man, and then she’s always so willing to be kissed or hugged. He can’t stop teasing her.

  75. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF one of my favorite kiss scenes in kdramas!

  76. @MM, I thought I saw “Park Hyung Shik” in the car too!

  77. I cant tell if his little smiles are because he is amused by her or because he is amused with his own antics.

  78. With informations she gives him, he can think with logic, taking into account the past messages he got from his future self. The story comes to its conclusion.

  79. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

This scene of her bouncing as she squats and complaining is a very crucial scene. Only now SW realises that he has caught up in time with his past adult self who had gone back 20 years in the past to save him and had warned MY, and that past SW had died and that his brother’s future was at stake in Nepal.

  80. @GB, honestly, no man can do that. ahahahah.
Men have a dick in their brain, and it’s long time now she should have experimented any sexual position you can imagine. But of course, kdrama characters are beyond Buddah wisdom and easely push away sex for superior mind superiority. ahahahhahhaha.

  81. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM He’s more amused by how he’s able to keep teasing MY and get away with it. She really believed him.

Now he scolds her when she’s in the plane… sheesh.

  82. The scene in the plane. It was obscure the first time I watched. But during rewatching, it was so clear.

  83. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, show is written by a woman and not a man with a d*ck brain LOLOL.

SW reads his 20 years ago message to himself. He makes his decision to rush over to Nepal but he’s going to Kathmandu and not to Annapurna. He finally meets himself in the mirror, as promised 20 years in the past. And just in time, because it’s about the exact same date/month and time as his original trip.

  84. And now the REAL last scene of the drama:
Yeah, this drama was outlined from the very first steps! The mysterious man we saw in episode one was OF COURSE, SW himself, and THIS TIME, he saves his brother. (well, I hope so)

  85. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE gets the exact same watch. He is now breaking away from the path that original SW took.

He speaks with Young Hoon and confuses him about the time travel paradox. LOL. Poor Young Hoon.

  86. The drama has come to a full circle, SW was the person JW saw in Annapurna.

  87. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE he thinks of the scenario that could be, and says it’s not true (maybe he means it’s not done yet) and decides to live according to what he feels is right.

  88. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, yes, the circle is completed. That’s why this is such a good ending. The merged timeline and all things being resolved while MY, SW, Young Hoon, and JW remember the man from the past.

  89. @GB, well it’s a nice information, and it doesn’t surpise me. I don’t like to generalize, but most of the time, women prefer men in control, sure of themselves without according a voice to their need. Yeah, lot of experience about that, lol! 🙂

  90. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, possibly it’s the way girls are socialized, brought up, told what is expected of them and how to behave etc and so it’s how they are as adults in guy-girl relationships.

  91. @FF, I think the first scene of the drama was a trap. It didn’t happened like that. SJJ just did a HUGE flashorward to this ending scene. There was probably no one in the real first scene.
But it’s also what makes the drama so great!

  92. @GB, this drama is quite fascinating and very well written. It is a good re-watch, thanks for the fun ride.

@WE you sound like you have lots of experience with women 😜

To everyone see you all next week!

  93. I have to go now. So we meet next week for SIGNAL first episode?
I wish to meet you here, bye bye!

  94. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

See you @FF! Bye Everyone and remember to watch Signal!!

  95. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Bye @WE! Yes, Signal, it will be!

  96. @WE Yeap what you said make sense too – flash forwent .

  97. WOW1 What a well written drama! Right now I am thinking of this drama as the most intricately woven of this writer. Would need a more recent rewatch of W and a first watch of MOTA for a fair comparison.

  98. @MM, hey hey. As I said often: 9 and QIHM are drafts for W. 😉
Best is W: meta, theme, crazyness, fast-pace, plot-twists. The big deal!
And of course too: background musics.

Then, about MOTA, second best one but not as good as W, because various points.
But MOTA is even more complex than W about screenplay tricks. (flashback montages, etc)
    And also excellent background musics.

Then, I might consider a comparison between 9 and MOTA, because 9 is excellent.
I think I prefer MOTA because the high-concept is more original (like W one).
And it have a “twilight zone” kind of feeling about the mystery.

While reading critics and opinions on MDL, I found someone saying her favorite drama from SJJ is 9. But it’s based on the fact this person was thinking W had plot-holes, and after our rewatch, I was myself surprised it has even less than what I was thinking.

  99. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, you mean ‘W’ had less or “9” had less than what you were thinking?

  100. @GB, I think 9 is quite clear, with many explanations.
I can’t find a plot-hole in this, nothing is blurry.
At max, maybe the concept is stretched depending of the dramatics. Nothing wrong.

While W needs some more thinking, and a few points were “put under the carpet”.
Not exactly plot-holes but weird details, like the kind of permanent access the killer had with the tablet. But again, it made sens, as he’s connected with the Sung-Moo’s zombi. But we don’t see the mini-portal in the killer room.

MOTA is even more complicated when we try to spare who’s a bug or not, why not the brother, and what’s this dungeon, not a part of a game but a real other dimension?
We also had to fight a lot to be sure of the timeline of events, with the travel from Korea to Spain.

QIHM is quite clear too, except the mystery of the smartphone at the end.

About 9, I often forget to mention, it’s a duo writers, with Kim Yoon Joo.
Sounds a solid writer too, made Duel (didn’t watched yet) and Find me in my memory.
SJJ worked many times in partnership with this writer.
    – Coffee House (well, the only drama from SJJ I don’t like, quite boring).
    – Yumi Cells.
    – Keu Keu Island’s Secret. I couldn’t watch, it’s a parody of the US series Lost.

If you watched Lost, you’re not surprised that SJJ is a bit inspired to create stories with supernatural mysteries. Just she does it better than Lost, as this series accumulate situations without really knowing where it goes.

I’m highly suspicious about SJJ watched Christopher Nolan movies, Memento (full reverse time story) and Inception (lot of mind-blowing high-concept and a multicontextual scene). Because of the way she writes in non-linear time.

Could be she also watched the old classic everybody watched “The twilight zone” series. Just this series is a lot of inspiration, not only about ideas but about the tone. It’s clearly absurd mysteries, like the episode about the living manikins. It’s not about horror monsters or classic paranormal situations, but mind-blowing ones.

  101. @WE I Was blown away at the time when I watched Inception. Now my keenest memory has to do with rectangular pits In the ground But I do not remember what happened.

  102. @WE, Momento! I will always remember that one. It’s the first movie that I’ve seen filmed in the reverse sequence. Wow should do a re-watch of that.

  103. @MM, Inception takes 45 minutes to expose the concept and make sure everybody understand, while during this time, still provides great scenes. Then, like SJJ dramas, it exploits the concept with various plot-twists.

I’m used to that to the brim about writing. I have a high-concept, then I ask myself many questions: what character would fit here? what are all the awesome scenes and twists I could make with that? Then it’s an endless chain of ideas.

    – Inception concept doesn’t evolute a lot, we know the rules. But still have some surprises.
    – 9’s concept is quite stable too, once we know the memory recovering. But it evolute a bit more. For example, the fact the memory recovering spread to other people. Then we have a final twist about how the concept evolute: last time travel is definitive.
    – Comparing to W: it’s a high-concept with lot of evolution. New plot-twists are often coming from an evolution of the high-concept we didn’t see coming. Of course, it follows the logic of the concept, but I think some audience were lost during part 2, because it continues to push the limits until the end, about new discoveries.
    – Once you end W drama, you think the writer pushed that as far as possible, but the avalanche of ideas I had while preparing a season 2 just made me realize this high-concept had much more possibilities and potential. And I’m not just speaking about just changing a place or a manhwa. It’s really about to produce twists coming from unexpected evolution of the concept.

@FF. Yep, I’d need to rewatch. A french cineast re-used the reverse-time concept for the movie “Irreversible”, but it’s a very harsh movie. When it was airing in theater, half the room was leaving at the middle, disgusted. 😅

  104. I feel inspired to rewatch Inception. Never did watch Memento. I will put it on my to watch list.

I have started rewatching Extaordinary You. I see that I have an already in place thread to accompany me.
