Just Bitching: The Obligatory End-of-the-Year Awards.
1. Best Gummy Smile of 2017: Joy in Lovely Love Lie.
2. Best I-Wish-She-Was-The-Lead-Instead of 2017: Kim Hwa-Gun of Ruler of the Mask.
When after years of not knowing whether he was dead or alive, he reappeared out of the blue in front of her. He didn’t recognize her of course, but she restrained herself from wailing out in joy. That moment, she had me.
3. Best Couple: WonSan hahaha. Low -information people still don’t get it.
4. Fake Couple: San and that 2nd lead, what’s his name again? That kiss-assault second lead.
5. SeeSaw Couple: Queen of Seven Days. They never found their equilibrium.
6. Bad Luck Actor: Yeon Woo Jin. He had back-to-back dramas (I.e., My Shy Boss and Queen of Seven Days) but his choices were horrible. I know. I know. Actors can’t all be like Lee Jong Suk who produces hit after hit.
7. Reckless Couple: My Secret Romance. In this day and age, drunk pregnancy is as stupid as drunk driving.
8. Fan Service Masquerading as Kdrama: Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. Ooooh, Stop it, Park Hyung Sik!!!! At my age, heart fluttering is more likely heart palpitation and a sign of a heart attack.
It’s so disgustingly annoying that I’m grinning back at the gif.
9. Best He/She Body Swap (the viewers didn’t even get it): Goblin. Sunny was the King and the Reaper was the Queen.
10. Waste of a Decent Actor: Cinderella and the Four Knights. Look, dramawriters. The brooding male is so Charlotte Bronte-ish. He looks silly beside the aegyo bunny of a heroine.
11. Most Unlikely Heroine: Weightlifting Fairy Kim Boo Joo. Weightlifting??
12. “Nope!” Actress: Shin Se-Kyung in The Bride of Habaek and Black Knight. I won’t watch her even if you paid me to review her dramas. Watching her face for emotions is like expecting a single Hahoetal mask to express a gamut of feelings.
13. 2D1N Sympathy Watch: Greatest One-Shot. I had to watch it because I like Cha Tae Hyun, Yoon Shi Yoon and Mr. Crawfish, Yoo Ho-Jin. I should have known to expect trouble when they couldn’t even come up with the best title: Greatest Hit? Best Hit? Greatest One-Shot explained it best. But the Bruce Lee intro was well-conceived, too.
14. Another-Prosecutor-Bites-the-Dust: While You Were Sleeping. I avoided it because of the lead character’s job. Sorry, Suzy!
15. Best Sleeper-but-Keeper Show: Because This is My First Life. lol. This is the most upbeat interpretation of The Graduate I’ve ever seen. The guy looked like a handsome version gecko (if a gecko like its cousin the frog could ever be considered handsome) but his alcohol+sleep induced confession in Episode 15 was so endearing because it showed his vulnerability and tenderness. They say, In Vino Veritas. Even when he was hurting, he didn’t rage at her. Only called her out for being a “bad woman” and leaving him. This show makes you feel good and warm inside: lilke logs in a fireplace when it’s snowing outside.
16. Failed Insurrection: Revolutionary Love. I thought this would jumpstart Siwon’s career after his military service. It didn’t. Too bad because I like Kang Sora.
17. Dead on Arrival: Go Back Couple. The premise of the plot could have been tolerable, but Son Ho Jon is not lead male material to me. He’s a sidekick like Hong Jong Hyun. He looks weak. lol. I preferred the male second lead.
18. Favorite sageuk/romcom: My Sassy Girl. It delivered. Much better than the original version where the girl, masquerading as a feminist, physically and mentally terrorized and browbeat the guy. Ugh. Too bad viewers couldn’t see past the overrated beauty of Jun Ji Hyun. Anyway, I discovered the actor JooWon because of this so I’m glad.
19. Waste of AirTime: MeloHolic. Sorry Yunho. I tried.
20. Most Anticipated Show: The Hong Sisters’ Hwayugi.
21. Another Sleeper-but-Keeper Show: Jugglers.
Feel free to tell me your rants and raves of the year.
Hahahaha… good reading!
1. Best Gummy Smile of 2017: Joy in Lovely Love Lie —> Spot on!
2. Best I-Wish-She-Was-The-Lead-Instead of 2017: Kim Hwa-Gun of Ruler of the Mask —> this can be consolidation for her, especially when MBC robbed her on MBC drama award last nigh lol
3. Best Couple: WonSan hahaha. Low -information people still don’t get it.
4. Fake Couple: San and that 2nd lead, what’s his name again? That kiss-assault second lead.
—> pssssstttt… MOD is lurrkk…. oh right you’re the mods 🤣
12. “Nope!” Actress: Shin Se-Kyung in The Bride of Habaek and Black Knight. I won’t watch her even if you paid me to review her dramas —> bribe packmule *insert: 💲💲gif* (how to post gif/image on comment’s section?)
15. Best Sleeper-but-Keeper Show: Because This is My First Life —> agree
16. Failed Insurrection: Revolutionary Love. I thought this would jumpstart Siwon’s career after his military service. It didn’t. Too bad because I like Kang Sora —> I don’t watch it. This point is successfully able to attract my attention because it mentions Siwon. Oppa’s detected lol. *insert topless siwon dance to super junior’s song*
I so wanted Siwon to do well because he OWNED that character in She Was Pretty. I thought he could reprise his role here. But it didn’t work out….
Funny you mentioned that “kiss assault”. In the drama Jugglers, the hero sternly warned the other guy that “if feelings aren’t mutual, then (his) actions are considered assault.” I noticed that recapper over at Dramabeans applauded this stance but I couldn’t help wondering what HER opinion was when Rin forced himself on San. I wouldn’t be surprised if she too swooned over Rin’s assault. Many fangirls had short-circuited their brains at that moment in time. smh
We are vindicated. That kiss on the bridge was assault and false imprisonment. There’ll soon come a time when forced kisses will be regarded as anathema, and people will stop condoning it in kdramas (or lakorns) just because it’s “culturally” acceptable in their society. No means no in any language, time and place.
I don’t know how to post gifs and pictures here in the comment section. I’ve been trying to figure it out, but people know that I’m the textbook example of a computer neatherthal. That’s the reason it’s only now that I’m joining Twitter and blogging.
Lol. I’m the biggest hater of Kim Hwa Gun. Her obsession with the kings pretty face got the tragedy rolling. Her obsession killed so many people and all these feathers in her cap was due to Gon and his information. She did nothing. She was not brave but a brat who wanted what she saw and when she didn’t get it she selfishly and thoughtlessly gave up her own life. Not a thought to her father.
Hook, Line, and Sinker!
I knew you would appear, YourHighness, if I posted something about her. 🙂 Hugs! Glad you’re here.
A post on bitchy second leads seems to be in order. Kdramas give bitches like us and HwaGeun a bad rep because they lack foresight to develop a plot that goes beyond the stereotypical depraved and delusional, over-the-top second female lead. Having heard that the Ruler’s writer was a relative newbie, I expected her/him to fall into that quagmire. But I appreciated her/his effort nonetheless to create a proper bitch. More of this discussion later… I’ve to prep some smoked salmon crostinis for my starving houseguests (real, not virtual).
Sorry about putting your post on hold. The technical side of this wordpress overwhelms me. I thought I had already “approved” of your post this morning.
Hahaha. *hugs*
Seriously the weirdo waited 5 years for a guy she knew was in love with someone else and then assumed he would choose her for power. She did not know him at all. But I was actually fine with her delusional obsession until she started her suicide mission without a thought to her poor father. That’s when my annoyance turned into full blown hate. Her father loved her for 22 years and the git gave up her life for 5 years of obsession. Little git. Parents > Obsession always.
