We already have our first nominee for the BKB of the Week award — courtesy of my friend and blogger mslee1107. Thank you!!
He’s a tsundere male! Surly on the outside, sweety in the inside. He certainly qualifies as a boyfriend material that we kdrama aficionados love and recognize.
Character Name: Kim TaeHo (KTH)
Actor’s Name: Kim Young-kwang (actor)
Kdrama: Go Ho’s Starry Night
Genre: Office Romance, 4 episodes
mslee cited 7 reasons why KTH should be considered BKB. I like her description of the scene here. I like it when a hero tricks me into believing that he’s an @#$ asswipe, only to reveal himself as a thoughtful gentleman in the end. Shades of Mr. Darcy, perhaps?
6. He always act rude towards her. Or so she thought. When she seems to have a cold he told her to get out of the car. He might catch cold from her as well. She was angry at him. But after she got out of the car she found it funny because she was dropped after all in her neighborhood. She thought he did not know and he was a fool / stupid. But all along he knew. 😜
Moreover, being sleep-deprived myself due to work last night, I especially appreciate his thoughtful gesture here:
4. If she fell asleep while he drives her home…He would wait for her to wake up when they reach her home. In the meantime, he would also take a nap inside the car. Thoughtful namja.
Honestly, this is one thing I like about Korean dating life – as depicted in kdramas, of course.
In kdramas, the guys NEVER take advantage of these situations when the girl are unconscious, drunk, dead-tired, or sleeping. In real life, I’d be worried if a daughter of mine were to sleep in her boss’ vehicle with him right beside her because he might have wandering hands and molest her. (See Harvey Weinstein.)
Also, I know from my nieces in college, that when they go out on dates, especially if it’s only their first or second date, they’re expected to text their girlfriends or roommates — at an appointed time (say, 10pm) – and report that they’re okay and enjoying their date. If my niece doesn’t check in with her GFs and roommies, her friends will then contact her. If she doesn’t answer her phone, then these friends will alert the police. This safety measure among the girls gives their family a peace of mind.
As for KTH being arrogant and bossy, I don’t mind at all as long as he isn’t emotionally abusive as that lead male in She Was Pretty. What was his name again? SungJoon? He’s on my disqualified list. His unprofessionalism was the reason I dropped that show. He shouted, berated and ridiculed the girl in a conference meeting in front of the whole team. For me, as a boss and bitch myself, his bullying was unacceptable. Also, I began to wonder whether he would launch a tirade if she were to ruin their dinner or forget to clean the house.
mslee1107, your write-up for KTH is exceptionally well-done and well-presented. Thank YOU! I love your specific examples of his BF’s ways. They made me look with interest at this unheard-of and little-know show. I also like the description of his visuals that you included. lol. Kdramas are still considered visual arts, so looks and charisma do matter, too.
