I groused about Oh Yeon Seo’s terrible ingénue act in Hwayugi, but I can forgive her because she redeems herself in the snarky scenes. But Shin Se Kyung was all-around ghastly in Habaek that, for the sake of my poor heart, I dropped that show a few minutes into Episode 4.
She seemed to possess only one unique — and very stupid — facial expression for every single human emotion, that if a director had used an emoji instead, he would have communicated the intention of the script better.
Hey, SSK, use this emoji chart as a guide to emoting.
I didn’t notice her bland expression in the first kdrama I’ve seen her in, “Blade Man” opposite Lee Dong Wok. Back then, I thought that her bewildered, wide-eyed look went well considering that her character interacted with the weird creature: a man who secreted deadly blades like sweat every time he was enraged.
But when I saw the same catatonic expression in the “Girl Who Can See Scents,” I knew I was going to go on bitch mode and mentally rename her Shin Sucky One. For someone so pretty and chirpy, her eyes are curiously vacant and dead.
The smile on the lips doesn’t reach her eyes here either.

I had hoped that she’d improved for Habaek but really this scene when she fell off the top of the building was an absolute nightmare. Really! She’s falling down to her death, and her face isn’t at all contorted in shock, terror and horror?!!
Here. I’ll screenshot it and rotate the pic for you so you can see what I’m saying.
Laughable, right? A potato head would have more reaction.
Not only this, we get another view of her “distressed” face as she was hurtling through space. Does she look credible here? I swear I look more distressed — and pained — when I stub my toe on the bedside table.
Then, after that, she’s heroically saved from being splattered into a million smithereens on the sidewalk, and her face has this dazed, woe-be-gone expression on it. Whattheheck? At this point, I wanted to throttle her for ruining the show for me. Sucky sucky sucky.
There was no turning back; I had to drop it. Sorry, Nam Joo Hyuk. I tried to like this show but … no.
One ring to rule them all. This expression ruined it all.
I tried to steel myself and watch Black Knight for Kim Rae Won but no… I watched Episode 1 and saw the trailer. She still has that same opaque look on her face. There are 43 muscles in the face, I wish she’d start using a quarter of them.
In terms of emoting she is hopeless. I didn’t mind her in Six Flying Dragons since the character was well written and her sageuk speech is near perfect. Other two actresses on par with her; Jin Se Yeon(Flower in Prison), Lee Yeon Hee(The Package).
Don’t get me started with LYH. With Shin Sucky, I would try to watch at least one episode. I want to give her a chance to redeem herself. But with LYH, after that movie with Hyun Bin (something Millionaire’s First Love?), I slammed the door on her bony butt and never opened it again.
LYH looks smug. There’s this self-awareness that she’s pretty which irritates me.
There are other actresses whose acting is quite as polished buy I don’t mind them. Like Yuna. I’m predisposed to like her although I know that she isn’t a top actress. And who’s that girl in the first Reply show? Ah! Eunji!
Lol I kinda want to see that movie now. I agree, personal charm is as important as acting. For idol actors we have low expectations but it’s upsetting to watch experienced actresses fare so badly.
I was a newbie to kdrama when I watched it so I didn’t know what to expect. I thought it was very hmmm. Photogenic? Panoramic?
In Disney-fied Hollywood, endings like that would be a tough sell.
Ohh, did you stalk Hyun Bin after Secret Garden haha
Just remembered something that would make you feel bad even for LYH. She nominated for top excellence actress category so SBS could gave the award to Suzy haha I was offended at the time but now I think it was so lame and funny
Onlysb, it’s no secret that I’m shallow. I’ll support kdramas with crappy plots bec I want the lead actress to succeed.
Like this Radio Romance. I don’t know what to make of this first episode. Some parts were original and got me curious but some scenes, I was frowning and wondering what the relevance was. Like that scene with the eccentric backpacker. I get that he’s some genius so he’s going to be given a bit of leeway in his field. But that whole dialogue with the executive could have been reduced to a minute. My rule is: if the scriptwriter cannot get the message across in a minute worth of dialogue, then rewrite the whole darn thing. It’s a waste of film.
Plus, I think it was derogatory. This backpacker apparently came back from India where he got enlightenment so now he was greeting everybody he met with “namaste”?! Like, come on. Who does that?! I have yet to hear my Indian friends say namaste.
“Just remembered something that would make you feel bad even for LYH. She nominated for top excellence actress category so SBS could gave the award to Suzy haha I was offended at the time but now I think it was so lame and funny”
What? What do you mean? The SBS team had to choose between LYH and Suzy??!! What year was this? Was there a drought that year? How did they end up with two sad nominees?
But I watch Suzy in one episode of While You Were Sleeping. She was alright — but that’s not saying much because she was playing herself.
No, I wasn’t stalking Hyun Bin. Honestly. I didn’t even know it was Hyun Bin. lol. I told you I was new to kdramas and all the Asian male actors looked alike to me. Unless he’s Jackie Chan, of course.
Same for me, if it’s not for the cast I can’t finish any romcom and I like it even less if it’s office romance.
Eccentric Pd reminds me of Choi Si Won from She Was Pretty, he can’t be taken serious and acts overtly familiar with everyone. As for executive he made me cringe from first minute and I didn’t pay attention to him thereafter. If scriptwriter doesn’t follow that rule I will just fast forward and eventually drop it.
Haha, last year 2017 year end awards. Suzy and Lee Bo Young got same top excellence award. Award should go to writer and directing that made her acting tolerable. ^^
Then the movie is one of classics. Maybe it’s just me after oldboy I approach k movies with caution lol
