I don’t mind Hyeri dating the actor (what’s his name again?). That’s her private affair, and it’s none of our beeswax. But when I heard the news, my good friend @hushhhh and I did wonder whether her acting in those scenes with PBG was stymied because of her growing attraction for her BF then. (@hushhh is an acting coach/instructor for theater.) There was a particular scene when I thought Hyeri could have projected or emoted more feelings had she been a better actress. It was that scene when Taek came out after realizing that he forgot to buy DeokSun her Christmas present. Taec asked her, “Tell me what you want, and I’ll get it for you.”
Now, that question is a standard TROPE in kdramas. Even the Hong sisters just used in recently in Hwayugi.
The unsaid answer there is “you.” DeokSun really wanted to say “I want you for Christmas.” She paused for a few seconds staring unblinkingly at Taec, then she blinked and shook her head as if to dismiss the thought.
Hyeri could NOT and did NOT express that shyness and hesitation of a girl falling in love. Back then, I blamed her lack of acting chops for her failure to properly convey the feelings.
I just got back from a trip visiting the in-laws.. 2 weeks without k-ent stuff killed me 😭 But they would protest and complain if I put too much attention to korea-related stuff during my visit. It was a torture. But at least now I’m back, though I have a lot to catch up #TheLifeOfKdramaBitchesStrandedInTheLandOfKdramaMuggles
Aaah yes, Rin.. how can I forget his name? Hahaha don’t remind me.. our Rin has a legion of worshippers, and that include the fanclub of his hands. IDK if these worshippers misidentified Rin with HJH or they purely worship Rin, that goes also to the shippers of Rin-San. They were so hardcore that they rewrote and self-interpret the plot hahahaha, I’m not so sure if they ship HJH with Yoona (as representative of themselves) or Rin with San.. hahaha
Now you mention about the possibility of Hyeri lack of emotional acting because she could be confused between reel and real, I have to agree.. I think it’s highly POSSIBLE.. though Reply is the only Hyeri drama I watch up until now, so I don’t really know and don’t have comparison whether it’s her lack of acting skill or the other thing..
I understand about the in-laws. 😂We have to be careful that we don’t alert them of our altered state. Sometimes I slip up and give myself away. For example when I accidentally used the Konglish “selca” instead of “selfie.” My son looked at me strangely. He thought I was inventing a new word because I’m (in)famous for being hopelessly behind-the-times with tech stuff.
My friend @hushhh was the one who brought up Hyeri’s “conflict of interest.” 😆 The director and writer purposely kept her in the dark bec they didn’t want her to reveal the answer to the husband guessing game. But if she was ALREADY feeling attracted to one of the actors, then naturally she would have a better chemistry with him.
Also her interview made sense too. She said she cried buckets at the restaurant scene when the male character proposed to DS and she turned him down. Lol. She didn’t have a wall between reel and real.
