MinHo the Jerk moved up a few millimeters.
Why?
Because the nice spring day, the cherry blossoms and the cotton candy are all run-of-the-mill drama tropes. The director and writer didn’t have to be there to shoot the scene. An assistant director and a junior scriptwriter could have copied previous kdrama hits.
Here’s last year’s hit with the cherry blossoms.
Here’s that famous cotton candy kiss with Jo In Sung.
And here’s Lee Seunggi from that @#$@#% Hwayugi.
This scene from today’s episode A Poem a Day was picturesque but cliched. (Yaaawwwnnn.)
It’s the end poem, “The Point of No Return,” which shared its title with the episode that mattered.
The Point of No Return
by Kim Chul Hyun
Leaving the person you love
And turning
As if you no longer love him.
Hiding the pain in your heart
And turning around
As if it doesn’t really hurt.
Hiding your unwanted parting
And turning around
As if it doesn’t matter.
Holding back your tears
And turning around
As if you’re not weak.
If you love that person
You can’t turn back
Because you love him.
It’s easy to see that MinHo still loves her.
But I suspect that there was a reason he didn’t want to get together with her in college.
Hmmm… I’m guessing it has something to do with his health. He tires easily and he falls asleep easily.
Remember this?
I don’t think he was lying here.
He was easily fatigued here, too, when it was BoYoung who did all the hard work.
And here, he was the only one flagging.
I assumed that he was simply lazy or out of shape. But then, I remembered he exercised. Remember he was jacked up.
Considering that this kdrama opted for a medical reason for Dr. Kim’s divorce, I wouldn’t be surprised if MinHo also had some medical issues for running away from BoYoung — beside his severe ALLERGIES to her poetry reading and to her tears. lol.
But if MinHo does have some sort of incurable disease, then I’m outta here because I didn’t sign up for a makjang. I thought this was a comedy and I’m here for comedy.
But it’s not so easy to ascertain whether BoYoung still likes him or not. Right?
If it weren’t for the poem, I’d say that she’s moved on. But the poem is applicable to her, too. Their argument in the morning is a repeat of his rejection of her in college.
MH: No! I’m not crazy enough to like you.
BY: Then, why did you tell me not to like Dr. Ye?
MH: That was because I know you’re going to get hurt by his rejection. Dr. Ye is only being nice to you as a colleague, not as a man. I said that in your best interest.
BY: Oh, is that right? Is that why you called me a repeat offender and an ex-convict after I begged you not to say those things?
MH: Yes, I’m warning you not to like Dr. Ye, okay?
BY: Why did you hug me then?
See? Why is she asking this? Or any of these? If she doesn’t care for him anymore, and wants to break it off for good, then she should have just let things pass without any post-mortem. Why does she want to know these things??
MH: Well…that was because I couldn’t keep my balance. Anyway I’m sorry about that part.
BY: Okay. What a relief. I know how you feel now, so stay out of my love life. I’ll deal with any rejection or pain that comes my way.
MH: Wow. Fine. Do what you want.
Compare their argument with Dr’s breakup with her husband. That is the excellent example of a “point of no return.” She totally closed the door on that relationship.
Kim: Let’s split up.
Ex: What are you saying all of a sudden?
Kim: It’s exactly how it sounds. I want to split up.
Ex: Why? What’s the reason? If you tell me, I’ll fix it.
Kim: There’s no reason. My feelings for you have changed and I no longer want to live with you, that’s all.
The ex-husband was asking why, just like BoYoung was asking why. “Why did you tell me not to like Dr. Ye? Why you called me a repeat offender and an ex-convict? Why did you hug me then?”
To her ex-husband, Dr. Kim merely replied that there was no reason. Her feelings changed, and she wanted an end.
The finality of her decision is like death.
In Minho’s case, however, he was tripping over his explanation. He couldn’t give her a straight answer. Then, he issued his parting words, “Do want you want!” like a challenge. As I said earlier in my post about the cricket, when a person rages, “Fine. Go ahead. Do want you want. See if I care!” the unsaid message here is “I still love you.”
I’ll have to continue this post tomorrow when I’m not sleep-deprived.
Love love how you interpret the poem with the scenes. I, myself haven’t watched ep 7 and 8 yet, though lurked the scenes in instagram and soompi. Though I can’t watch how MH treat BY, but how you elaborate with words makes me squee. Oh, I hope surely hope they (MH and BY) end up together beacuse boy they are so cute together! It is just weird if MH wasn’t the main lead since there lot of explanation of him from the beginning of this drama.
Looking forward for your next post!
Just watch Ep 7 and 8. lol. It’s better than reading my blog. 😉
When you watch MH, just remember that his best friends with NamWon and NW described him as a bit untrustworthy (i.e., doesn’t do his projects, slacker) but a good guy.
I don’t know if they’ll end up together. Let’s wait and see. But the story does revolve around him and BY… which is weird.
Maybe it has something to do with seniority. 🙂 The actor portraying Dr Ye has been in the acting business longer than the actor portraying MH.
I almost give up after i watched ep8.. Coz i thought dr ye is the main lead. But after i read your review as always really helped me a lot ! But ofc i will just accept even if minho is the 2nd lead like I’m prepared haha
Btw if dr ye is the main lead maybe after this focus on his ex then boyoung thought he don’t love her. Minho will be just in pain silently. I can’t stand seeing minho being sad yes he’s a jerk but because im team minho so yeah. Lol
I feel like boyoung already move on & don’t have any feeling for minho coz that hug scene lol can’t believe they made it like it was funny scene. They played with my heart that hug scene so heart fluttering ! Well for me then they made it like funny scene the next epi why. I mean when boyoung push him away & said are you crazy something like that lol
I was kind of feeling bad as Min Ho watched both bo young and Dr. Ye leaving the hospital compound. So that excellent poem analogy really made me feel better. Thank you!
At this point, I am really baffled why they are still allocating so much screen time over min ho teasing bo young. If they aren’t endgame then this should really stop. Stop playing with our heart writer!
Why did you mention about the seniority juniority factor though? Do you think they could fix the ending based on that?I do remember the actor playing Dr. ye took a bit of time before deciding to do this drama. So don’t know if this was because of his prior activities or just reservation to play a second lead. :S
I think the poem could also read and interpreted from Boyoung’s POV.
You can see it this way: after their big argument, SHE decided to turn away because MH hadn’t changed. He was still rejecting her so what the heck? I’m so done with you, MinHo!
If you love that person
You can’t turn back
Because you love him.
She was telling herself that she would move on with Dr Ye. She want going to turn back anymore because she loved MinHo but she was so over him. 🤣
For me, something’s wrong with the way she’s in love with Dr Ye. She’s “in love” with a fantasy. That’s why she keeps on eating a REPLICA of the cotton candy. Three times, right? The cotton, the feather duster, and tissue. She was FIXATED on the romance of that beautiful spring day eating cotton; she was fangirling the moment: the COTTON CANDY. But when a girl (or guy) falls in love with a guy, she just doesn’t repeat the same romantic scene over and over again like we do with a favorite kdrama scene. She’ll fantasize about FUTURE scenes. She’ll plan their next meeting or next “accidental” encounter and then practice in her head their conversation. Moreover, a girl truly in love actually thinks about the THE guy and what HE’s doing at that moment. She’ll wonder hmmm what’s he doing right now. Who is he with? Is he thinking of me?
See that, for a girl supposed in love WITH A MAN she’s oddly uninterested about him. To me, she’s more in love with COTTON CANDY moment. 😉
When Dr Ye cancelled their evening walk at the last minute, she didn’t flinch or sigh or became sad. She just texted back “that’s okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She wasn’t curious about his whereabouts. 😂As a matter of fact, isn’t it strange that she hasn’t even googled him or stalked his social media. 😂😂
Then her voice didn’t change. Didn’t you notice that?
Her “phone” voice while talking to Dr Ye at the rest stop on MinHo’s bday = her “phone” voice while talking to Dr Yang when she was out that spring day
Also, she explained her behavior in the elevator. She told Dr Kim that it was her own fault because she just became “overly sensitive.” She became OVERLY sensitive in Dr Ye’s company because she didn’t want him to think that she was an “easy” girl. Lol. It’s his good opinion that she was after, not his love. If she loved Dr Ye, she would have said “I don’t want him thinking that I’m still in love with MinHo” instead of “I don’t want him thinking that I’m a flirt.”
Also, Dr Ye doesn’t see her as a woman. He sees her a child, an endearing child.
The poem could apply to him too you know. He left THAT woman behind. “If you love that person You can’t turn back because you love her.” 😈
at the last scene dr. ye called her to cancel their meeting. she doesnt feel sad at all, instead she is thinking her roomate who is crying alone. its really weird.
but i have to agree about minho health issue. he always insist her to do not like him, no matter what. while he doesnt have another woman..
high five, lovebangwon!!!
I agree about that phone call. She didn’t at all feel sad. It’s like “ok, I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye.”
And the timing of the phonecall. This scene came right after the whole poem was read…. that if you love somebody, turning away is going to be a heckuva pain but you’ll do it because you ~~ love ~~.
Well, she just dismiss the phone call and their date WITHOUT pain or regrets or worry at all.
And there’s another “weird” scene with Dr. Ye in the restroom washing his hand and agonizing about his decision to embarrass MinHo. What was that all about? Okay, I’ll write about this.
I’m on my way home from meetings all morning, so give me about two hours. If I don’t post anything by then, I’ll be back after midnight, Washington DC time.
Hi. I found u thru soompi and I’m glad I did because your views on the series are really interesting.
Personally, I think tha BY is not really that inlove yet with any of the leads. I think she is the kind of person who gets touched so easily, and falls easily, dreamily with a person being nice to her. See how in college, she was touched by MH’s actions when he picked her up in his car so she won’t be late for her part-time. And she was touched when Dr. Ye took her side most of the time. We saw that she’s a pushover and seeing how these guys showed her kindness, she became infatuated with them. I think that’s all there is to it at this time, Infatuation. Plus, she moved on quite fast.
This is one kdrama where I don’t really know who the main lead is because they delegated so much time on MH and BY that at first, I thought that MH is the male lead but now, they’re starting to show how Dr. Ye is feeling too, so it’s so hard to guess who BY will end up with. But I think that either lead is not bad. I mean, there are comments where he is such a jerk, but he’s really just mean to BY and nobody else, and you know how boys get mean to the girls they like. It is still an unacceptable behaviour, but the point is, I think that he’s a good person like how NW described him as.
Episode 8 a bit a downer for me but this is just because I loved Ep 6&7.
Your theory about his illnes is interesting. I was thinking as well that he might be in love with her since college. There were 2 scenes that made me guess so.
In Episode 1 when he heard about her working in their hospital. He seemed surprised & annoyed but he looked puzzled first of all. In Episode 7 BY said that she wished that someone would fall in love with her from the first sight. So I was thinking if this line was left on purpose by the writer or not. We know for sure that Dr Ye didn’t fall for her from the first sight. He is not such a person. Yeah, my take on these scenes can be totally absurd but I don’t mind being wrong lol
But we can’t be sure about our MH. There must be some other flashbacks in their story that were saved for viewers. On the other hand, I feel that those flashbacks could fail our ship just as sail it. If MH really liked her in college then he is an idiot for losing such an opportunity. Sorry, I don’t think he is indeed ill or something. BUT if he started liking her now or realizing it than we have higher hopes. K-dramas usually don’t forgive male leads that keep their feelings in secret for years without proper reason, remember JH with his timing. Dr Ye is also in danger as he started showing more interest in BY but still can choose not to cross boundaries to stay in his comfort zone and then he will become JH lol
“But if MinHo does have some sort of incurable disease, then I’m outta here because I didn’t sign up for a makjang.” Same but again I find it cool that you saw those instances in which MinHo is tired and thought there could be more to it. Wow!
I think BY’s love for MinHo (in the past) and Dr Ye (in the present) is infatuation too, like Sansukini said earlier. That cliche cotton candy scene and then BY’s day dreams fit the description quite well.
In the end I think the flash poll should had leaned the other way if Dr Ye managed to get to BY and not cancel their plans but he did so.. this far is only MH who took steps towards becoming the lead. Everything that happens to him is about her
